At 11 in the morning of January 9th, the alarms went off in a 19-story building in the Bronx, in New York, due to a fire sparked by a malfunctioning electric heater, in a room of the second floor. 17 people died — 8 of them were children — and at least 32 were injured. It is the worst blaze of the last 30 years.

About 200 firefighters got to the place to respond to the emergency that affected the building where most of its residents were Muslim.

Apparently, once the fire started, the residents of the apartment escaped leaving the doors open, which made the situation worse. Mayor Eric Adams urged to close to the door when this kind of situations present themselves in order to avoid a tragedy.

The firefighters found “victims in the stairways on every floor, many of them in cardiac or respiratory arrest,” said Daniel Nigro, commissioner of the New York City Fire Department. z A las 11 de la mañana del pasado 9 de enero se encendieron las alarmas en un edificio de 19 pisos del sector del Bronx, en Nueva York, por un incendio generado por un calentador eléctrico en una habitación del segundo nivel. Al parecer, una vez se produjo el fuego, quienes vivían en el apartamento huyeron dejando la puerta abierta, lo que agravó la situación. Incluso, al referirse a lo ocurrido, el alcalde Eric Adams pidió cerrar las puertas ante este tipo de circunstancias para evitar tragedias.
