AfroGossip Psquare Plans Album Concert
The multiple award-winning duo of Paul and Peter Okoye, otherwise known as PSquare announced today,
that they’re staging a major ‘album concert’ for their fans and followers based in Nigeria. In anticipation of the release of their fifth studio album, the bestselling Nigerian pop singers are set to put up the performance of a lifetime; working with a carefully-selected team of dancers, choreographers, musicians and back-up acts. A spokesperson for the duo tells us they are working day and night to ensure the forthcoming album not only surpasses all expectations, but also to make sure the big-bidget concert is a winner by kilometres. Other acts that have held solo concerts at The Eko Hotel, since it opened for business last year are 2Face Idibia and Dbanj (and the Mohits crew). Psquare follows in this growing tradition; and there are
unconfirmed reports Paris-based Asa is also contemplating her own gig for this same venue. A joint performance by King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey in 2010 failed to hold despite huge anticipation and media frenzy. Meanwhile Psquare’s rep tells us ‘The countdown to the album release officially kicks off with this concert, billed to hold in July’. Tentatively the album will contain 10 to 13 songs. Two singles will be released in a matter of days. The Psquare Concert will be held at the the new Expo hall of Eko Hotel and Suites on Saturday, July 30, 2011. In their successful career, P Square have released four very successful albums; Last Nite, Get Squared, Game Over and Danger. Story by Osagie Alonge

AfroGossip Okyeame Kwame turns comedian in ‘Ties that Bind’ Ghanaian rap superstar, Okyeame Kwame will soon show his fans another side of him as he features in Leila Djansi’s upcoming film, ‘Ties That Bind’ in the most unfamiliar fashion. Although the rapper may not be entirely new to acting, his role as a standup comedian would surprise many, especially since he wasn’t scripted and had to generate the jokes by himself. Okyeame Kwame, plays the role of Seun Baka, an established comic who comes to town for a one-night-only of fun and humour. According to director Leila Djansi, she was very impressed because Okyeame was actually funny. The extras for the comedy show scene, didn’t have to fake the laughter
much as most of them also gave a similar account. So is there a job on the cards for Ghana’s Rap Doctor? ‘Ties That Bind’ is a feature length movie about Adobea, Buki and Theresa, three women from different walks of life bound together by a similar pain; the loss of a child. In a destined meeting in a small village in Kroboland, the women journey together to redemption, love, life and forgiveness as they renovate a dilapidated clinic for the villagers. It stars Kimberly Elise, Randall Batinkoff, Ama K Abebrese, Omotola Ekeinde, David Dontoh, John Dumelo, Ebbe Bassey and others. Story by Ameyaw Debrah

AfroFashion After several months of preparation and a few moments of panic, FashionMist 2011 finally came to light and out of the mist. Following closely after Ghanaian Independence and under the shadow of a successful ARISE Fashion Week in Lagos; FashionMist had set itself a high standard to meet, particularly for a first-time event. Those with grand expectations were certainly not disappointed as the evening drew a large and varied crowd and the FashionMist team has already been inundated with queries about a followup event. The success of FashionMist would not have been possible without the energy and dedication of the FashionMist team and the innovative vision of artistic director Ola Shobowale. FashionMist has indeed been propelled into the spotlight and will no doubt continue to shine.

AfroFashion The shows are aimed at brand new or emerging designers as well as established designers that want to use these shows to either launch themselves or a brand new collection that they have. The shows will be held every month at classy West End venues. The designers featured at the show were Catalyst by Tamara Joseph AJ Clothing Chancie Style Yaa Ataa Couture Bags Silk Rose Adopted Culture Fee Uhssi Designs Bebegrafiti The aim of the shows is to give designers the opportunity to showcase their collections in an affordable and very classy way, in a fantastic venue with professional models. We are aware that so many designers cannot afford the elaborate costs of doing their own launch or participate in some of the big shows such as London Fashion Week etc not to mention if they are new or up and coming, most designers would not meet the criteria to be involved in such shows. Fashions Finest Renaissance aims to redress this imbalance by giving all types of designers from all backgrounds and ethnicities the opportunity to have their own launch organised by a professional fashion company would absorb the costs of their launch. The fashion evenings are open to all designers of all genres from urban to swimwear, to couture, whatever type of clothes or accessories they do, designers may participate in these shows.

Given the rarity of African faces on any of the international channels, Komla’s presence has impressed many.
Komla Dumor Almost by stealth, the rise of Komla Dumor to the status of Ghana’s only global television and radio broadcaster must have come as a surprise to some who switched on their televisions one February morning in London to see the bespectacled dark skinned face of one of Ghana’s most successful journalist. The trademark baritone boomed from the televisions set; “Welcome to BBC World news, my name is Komla Dumor…” However, most people who saw that first broadcast in London did not know Dumor had joined the cast of television presenters on BBC World news international channel well over a year before. Now, Komla Dumor is prime time on UK and international television. It’s been a journey that’s stretched more than 15 years! A journey that has seen Komla rise from weekend radio DJ - to JOY FM’s daily prime time morning show host - to the halls of one of the world’s most prestigious Universities - Harvard. Of course, one cannot forget that infamous 2003 Ghana Journalist of the Year award which saw Komla receive the top award from the Ghana Journalist Association for his investigation into public sector corruption in Ghana’s Social Security system. Some of his fellow Ghanaian media practitioners could not stomach the fact that their highest award had been taken by someone who they considered a “non journalist”. One wonders what they must think now, seeing the man Ghana knows as “the boss player” handling world news on radio and television. As one of our readers in Canada put it, “any time he is on, I feel so proud. I show him to my kids on screen and say, ‘that man there is from Ghana!’” Given the rarity of African faces on any of the international channels, Komla’s presence has impressed many. He joined the BBC as host of
Network Africa and after two years he moved on to become a presenter of the BBC World Service flagship program, The World Today. Dumor’s foray into television really began when he became the pioneering host of the new show Africa Business Report. A new BBC TV show that covers business and entrepreneurs across the continent. Since 2009, Komla has traveled to over 17 different African countries meeting policy makers and entrepreneurs. Telling the story of an emerging continent at its best. His unique style and energy made Africa Business Report one of the most watched BBC programs. No surprise that Komla would soon become one of the BBC’s TV newscasters. He now anchors the prime time morning slot, which is seen by audiences in the UK and millions more around the globe. Komla’s dedication to his work recently resulted in a nomination for one of the most coveted prizes in journalism. On May 29, he is up for a Sony Broadcasting Award in the category Speech Broadcaster of the Year. Not bad for the fellow who started his radio career presenting traffic news at JOYfm in Accra! His razor sharp appearance and gravitas aside, he still remains one of the most down to earth people you will ever meet. When he is not suited up and sitting behind a teleprompter, you might find him strolling the parks of London clad in denims and Chuck Taylor sneakers. Most likely in the company of his kids to whom he is totally devoted. What’s next for the Boss Player? Late last year it was rumored that he had been made an ‘offer-youcant-refuse’ to handle a high profile job for a multinational. But from all indications Dumor is staying put. Smiling at the millions who watch the leading news channel in the world. You can follow Komla on facebook.com/kdumor and on twitter.com/BBCkomladumor

The game was the first time the African nation has ever met with the Three Lions and the Black Stars was cheered on by an army of supporters in excess of 20,000 fans, the largest away following for any nation since the opening of the new Wembley. The final say was left to Gyan though, whose late run across and into the area past Lescott ended with a low left-footer past Hart and into the bottom corner to leave Ghanaian voices sounding the loudest.

AfroMusic TayMos is one stimulating artist that blends contemporary soul with Afro Pop.
His roots can be traced back to Apapa, Lagos, Nigeria, where he recollects fondly the days when his parents used to
drive him and his siblings out for weekly choir practise. There, he learnt quite a lot and his interest in melody and catchy hooks developed naturally. He also started listening to artist like TelvinCampel, Boyz II Men, Sting, King Sunny Ade and Stevie Wonder who have been strong influences on his work ever since. On returning to London as a young adult, he enrolled for a number of courses at the London Contemporary College of Music and Vocal Tech. He learnt from the best with renowned tutors Yak Bondy (Annie Lennox, Mark Morrison, ErykahBadu...), William Lester, Iain Mackenzie (Ronnie Scott’s vocal lead) and Kim Chandler. He developed back then a unique
combination of high pitched sound, vitality and edginess, a mix very soon flourishing to become the core of his style. With a vibrant character and a sense of fun, TayMos, now an accomplished songwriter and singer, infuses AfroPop, Rnb and Soul into his music and brings into being, inimitable melodies. Check out his new infectious single Fallen(o nana) and Life feat Wyzdom, an exciting mix of Pidgin English set to a soulful, afrobeatflavour. TayMos is has worked with some of Nigerian’s top producers Jeremiah Gyang and Tee Y Mix. So stay tuned for more!

AfroMusic 5Five Part Ways With Bullhaus Entertianment strong house behind the group. According to the group, the management of the record label have not dealt well with them as far as finances are concerned. Although this news has gone round a few newspapers and websites, the group has on no platform been able to indicate how much they are owed by the label or the circumstances leading to the debt.
5five, one time hottest sensation and two Ghana Music Award winners have part ways with Bullhaus Entertainment. Bullhaus Entertainment has been the
The label has a different version of the break up. As per our sources from the label, the break away has come as results of insolence from the group especially its leader, referred to as Papi in show biz circles. The break up is said
to be the reason behind their seeming absence from main stream music these few months. In a related development the group is said to have made several efforts to get back into the record label but we are informed that the label is not particularly willing to carry on working with the group. The label recently signed on latter day Regga sensation Iwan. The label also has Nii of Mentor and Project fame.
Gospel Music Video Awards launched Media and Publicity Coordinator of Church House Entertainment Joshua Obuam told Adom Entertainment News the maiden edition would be used to reward great gospel music videos and also encourage excellence in gospel video music production in Ghana. He noted that even though gospel music constituted about 60 per cent of music in Ghana not much premium has been placed on rewarding gospel musicians in the country. Joshua Obuam observed that gospel music had not been given its due on the Ghana Music Awards scheme and that made gospel musician feel left out and this new scheme has been designed to give gospel music its due recognition. As part of efforts to promote quality gospel music videos in Ghana, ChurchHouse Entertainment has launched the maiden Gospel Music Video Awards in Ghana. The launch sets the stage for the awards night originally slated for May 28, 2011 but organizers said the date has been shifted to June this year at the National Theatre.
“We are rewarding videos from 2009 to 2010 for the first edition and then we will keep to one year in the subsequent editions,” he said. He mentioned some of the competitive categories as Best Male Video, Best Female Video, Best Choir and Group Video, Best Collaboration, Best Dance and Choreography, Best Reggae Video,
Best Contemporary Gospel Music Video, Best Storyline, and Overall Best Video among others. Joshua Obuam said apart from the competitive categories some special industry players would be given honorary awards dubbed “Industry Impact Awards” at the same function. “The industry impact awards are for personalities and groups whose impact in the gospel music industry is still resonating for year now.” “Personalities and groups like Mary Gansah, Alabaster Box, Tagoe Sisters, Akosua Agyapong, Stella Dugan, and Rev. Tom Bright Davies and others have made lasting impact and they cannot be put in the competitive categories,” he said. He said award winners would be decorated with citations and special plaques and would also get promotion packages on the platform of media partners and on the Churchhouse website.
