Did you know?

April is

from all of us at

Home & Garden

Spring into action Julie Cascio, University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service Spring has arrived! With the challenges presented by the virus that is going through our country, we are experiencing more time in our homes. Some of this causes challenges; some offers opportunities. EASTER arrives this April. Take time to celebrate Easter this year in new ways. Use what is on hand to make gifts and cards, play games, create new recipes or more. Here are just a few ideas of activities that help us spring into action! CLEAN: Take time to clean from ceiling to floor. Clean room by room. Get the family involved. Putting on some music or establishing a family reward as an incentive to get the work done are ideas. Then use the experience to set up on-going cleaning habits. Sweep off any dust or cobwebs on the walls. Regularly clean sink and shower drains to remove hair and grease. Vacuum heating and cooling system vents

6

GreatLander Mat-Su

monthly and replace the air filter as directed by the manufacturer instructions. Read the labels on every cleaning product and take the time to learn how to care for different finishes. ENJOY OUTDOORS, Safely! With snow melting ice can form. Wear boots or shoes with good cleats. Wear gloves. If you will be in an area with others that might be close, wear a mask (It helps prevent the bites of cold wind as well as COVID-19.) Wear a coat that can handle the weather. Spring means it is warming up, but we live in Alaska. Cold continues for a while… As time is spent outdoors to exercise and expend energy, it is a time to watch nature growing. What leaves are beginning to bud on the trees? What plants are beginning in areas were snow is already melting away? Do bird watching to learn what birds are in your area. PLAY GAMES. Put together an outside scavenger hunt. For this, make a list of spring objects (rocks, pine cones, last year’s leaves, etc.) to look out for, and check them off as you find them outside.

April 2020

Build an indoor fort. Spread a sheet over the high back of two chairs to crawl underneath. COLLECT ROCKS. When walking outside, collect different size rocks, or all the same size. - Paint them with your favorite colors. Add a magnet to attach to the fridge.

- Use them to play hopscotch MAKE CRAFTS from items already in the house: chalk, paint, crayons, colored pencils, paper, cardboard, etc. Or use these items to make games to play. Learn to sew, crochet or knit with fabrics and yarns in the house. BAKE and COOK. Be creative. Search through your shelves, frig and freezer to see what is on hand. It is a good time to use what is in the freezer so there is room for the fish or moose caught and vegetables you’ll grow. Another option is to can those items to preserve them. Follow the correct procedures for canning food using the publications in cespubs.uaf.edu GARDENING: Plan a garden that will fill your family need, but not too large to maintain. This month start seedlings inside to plant outside when the weather warms. The garden publications at cespubs.uaf.edu provide information on varieties that work well in Alaska, ways to start seedlings, and more! There are many ways to use this time to Spring into Action.

Home & Garden

Coping with stress Julie Cascio, University of Alaska Fairbanks Cooperative Extension Service, Mat-Su District Life’s ups and downs happen! Last summer’s warmth inspired enjoying our lakes, trails, gardening, hunting – all kinds of fun experiences. In the MatSu Valley, earthquakes, wild fires, flooding, and now the changes brought on by the pandemic have been Julie Cascio occurring. How we handle, or don’t handle, stressful situations affects our lives. Stress is the body’s reaction to the changing demands of life. Stress motivates us to get things done! Happy life events (such as having a baby, getting a new job) and negative events (such as death of a loved one, divorce, emergency situations, or financial difficulties) can cause stress. Children and adults of all ages experience stress. An example of a current stress situation may be a change in the job due to the pan-

demic emergency. Staying at home to work or do school with others around may mean lots of distractions. Or may be more noise. This makes it hard to concentrate on work or homework. Getting up to get a drink of water may show chores that need to be done in the house. Focusing on work may make others in the home feel neglected. The inability to spend time with other family or friends may cause loneliness or the guilt of not helping. Yikes! Stress can impact us physically and emotionally. Physical response to stress can delay the body healing or lead to ulcers or high blood pressure. Excessive crying, anxiety and anger are some emotional symptoms of the impact of stress. In the Montana State University Extension publication “Understanding and Managing Stress” Dr. Sandra Bailey writes that finding positive ways to manage or cope with stress is essential to overall health. There are a variety of activities that can reduce stress. Some may do yoga to relax while others choose to ride a snowmachine. Activities may only take a few minutes; others may take a few hours or an entire day. There are a variety of ideas for reducing
