Organizing a global volunteer week that engages employees around the world to make an impact within local communities.

The context Cinta Ardit, Volunteering Lead at Glovo, manages the internal volunteering program, providing opportunities for employees based in more than 20 countries to come together and take positive action in their local communities. This is done with the help of volunteering ambassadors who work on the ground with the support of the Alaya platform to ensure the success of their social impact program in each region.

One of their top priorities when developing a volunteer program is to connect all initiatives back to their core business values. As equality of access to essential goods for everyone is one of the main pillars of their commitment to serve the community, they set out to build a volunteer program that would engage employees in providing resources to those in need within the communities where they are located.

We decided to organize the first field volunteering activity at Glovo to offer an opportunity for our colleagues to do good beyond the walls of Glovo, while connecting with other teammates and gathering in small groups to share experiences. Alaya helped a lot by connecting us with nonprofits and getting specific information and details on the volunteering activities that were necessary for us to then plan the whole Global Volunteering Week.” Cinta Ardit

The challenge With the uncertainty of the Covid situation affecting their ability to meet in-person as one global company, Glovo wanted to coordinate a volunteer initiative that would inspire employees to connect with regional teammates, while taking positive action together within their local communities.

To serve their corporate mission of providing access to essential goods to everyone, they proposed a Global Volunteer Week centered around lending support to local food banks. This would give employees the opportunity to contribute their time to a meaningful cause that is close to the company’s core business.

Their main challenge Organize a global event that would simultaneously take place across 9 different locations. Connect with nonprofits related to their core business within their desired regions without being on the ground in each area. Boost employee participation in each location of the program despite a remote working environment.

The solution

Access to localized volunteer activities on the Alaya platform to accelerate planning

With the help of Alaya’s database of international nonprofits, Glovo was able to connect with food banks in their desired regions, retrieving the necessary details on each volunteering activity that were crucial for executing their Global Volunteering Week.

An engaging in-person experience

Despite the challenges of reaching regional teams during Covid, this program enabled employees to experience the impact of their efforts first-hand, while connecting them physically with local team members.

Tailored support that drives corporate purpose across the globe

This customized program meant that the team was able to measure their real impact and engage employees with their corporate mission of providing access to essential goods to everyone. In fact, it was so engaging that Glovo ended up extending the program from one week to two weeks due to a high number of sign-ups in some locations like Barcelona.

Tips & Advice for other companies Remain as flexible as possible to adapt the volunteer week to each country’s reality Start planning in advance while still accommodating any possible time constraints, particularly regarding the fluctuating Covid situation Establish a point of contact in each location who can take care of on the ground logistics and directly communicate with nonprofits.

At Glovo, our value ‘Care’ is not just a sign on the wall. It's a value lived by many on a day-to-day basis. When building the volunteering program, our team was trying to find the best ways to leverage people's Care to have a positive impact beyond our office walls. Due to the hectic work environment at Glovo, we figured out it was important to streamline people's actions in an organized way. The Volunteering Week was the answer! One (in the end two due to success) dedicated weeks, clear communication and a structured event, empowering people to do good together.
