LIVING YOUR LIFE LIKE IT’S GOLDEN “Strong Tradition. Proven Success. Powerful Future.”

These words constitute the theme for Albany Tech’s ongoing 50th Anniversary celebration. In my opinion, it’s an amazing accomplishment to do anything for fifty years. Just consider how our world has changed from 1961 and how these changes are implemented through the programs we offer at Albany Tech. In 1961, there were no microwaves or cell phones; no fax machines, cruise control, nor home computers or hand-held music players. Now we have wireless access across campus, programs in technology, visual communications and online education – just to mention a few.

Thought for the quarter: Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that approach and fade away like algebra, reading, and English classes, but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.

Follow these tips to living GOLDEN: 1. Take a 10-30 minute walk everyday; and while you walk, smile.

2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.

3. Sleep for 7 hours.

4. Live life with the 3 E’s: Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.

5. Play more games.

6. Read more books than you did in 2010.

7. Drink plenty of water.

8. Eat breakfast like a king…lunch like a prince, and dinner like a beggar.

9. Forgive everyone for everything.

10. Spend time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of 6.

Albany Tech has grown and adapted through the years to remain on the cutting edge of technology, systems, and processes. It’s an exciting time to be on the campus as we celebrate this anniversary. We continue to grow and adapt to meet the needs of our community.

As you celebrate the “Golden Anniversary” at Albany Tech, consider your education to be like nuggets of gold – a priceless treasure that can never be taken away.

Approach the exam with GOLDEN clad confidence.

Use whatever strategies possible to personalize success: visualization, logic, talking to yourself, practice, team work, keeping a journal.

View the exam as an opportunity to show how much you’ve studied and to receive a reward for the studying you’ve done.

Be prepared!

Learn the material thoroughly and organize what materials needed for the test. Use a checklist.

Choose a comfortable location for taking the test with good lighting and minimal distractions.

Allow yourself plenty of time, especially to do things needed before the test. Get there a little early.

Avoid the need to cram.

Strive for a relaxed state of concentration.

Avoid speaking with any fellow students who have not prepared, who express negativity, or who will distract your preparation.

Why Do We Need to Study Mathematics?

“Go down deep enough into anything and you will find mathematics.” This is a quote by Dean Schlicter.

Although he was not a mathematician or scientist, he made a very valid point. Several students ask the question “Why do we need to study Mathematics?”

There is not a GOLDEN answer simply because there are so many career paths, but as Mr. Schlicter puts it, if you dig deep enough into anything, you may strike gold in the area of mathematics.

Here are a few reasons why you need mathematics:

Don’t allow the perceived difficulties of mathematics keep you from achieving the goals that you have set for yourself. Understand that every career needs mathematics, even if it is just to count the money made or loss.
