CELEBRATING A STEWARD OF EDUCATION:
DR. KUANITA E. MURPHY
From the Faculty and Staff of ATC, we bid a fond and heartfelt farewell to Dr. Kuanita E. Murphy, a native of Cuthbert, Georgia, who has graced our campus with wisdom, wit, and a vision that has uplifted us all. Dr. Murphy's journey with ATC began in 2012. Through the years, she has served on our board of directors with dependability and strength. Dr. Murphy, an alumna of Randolph Clay High School, carried her passion for learning and leadership through her academic accomplishments. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1997 and a Master of Arts in History in 2004 from Valdosta State University. Her pursuit of excellence did not stop there; she became a Leadership Georgia graduate in 2010 and achieved a Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix in 2014. Dr. Murphy has been a combination of drive and foresight during her tenure on our Board of Directors since 2012, especially as Board Chair from 2018 to 2023. Her leadership style, characterized by inclusivity and a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of education, has propelled our college to new heights. Dr. Murphy will continue to make an impact at the college. She transitioned to become the new Vice Chair of ATC's Foundation in 2023. Outside the college, Dr. Murphy's contributions have been equally
influential; as a member of Albany Area Primary Healthcare's Board of Directors since 2012 and as a treasurer and board member for various organizations, she has extended her expertise and compassion to the broader community. Dr. Murphy's chairmanship at Emory University's Prevention Research Center and her active roles in national committees reflect her commitment to public health and education. Notably, her position as executive director of Randolph County Family Connection, Inc., and as the publisher and editor of Rural Leader Magazine showcases her multifaceted leadership skills and her dedication to rural development and empowerment. In her parting words, Dr. Murphy expressed her privilege in working with our staff and board members, her pride in the college's growth, and her confidence in the future as she recommended Mr. Kenneth Dyer to succeed her. Her recommendation carries the weight of her experience and the assurance that the mantle will be passed to capable hands. As we welcome Mr. Dyer, we also take this moment to express our deepest gratitude to Dr. Murphy. Her legacy is not just in the policies she helped enact or the boards she led; it is in the lives she has touched, the community she has nurtured, and the bright future she has helped to shape. Dr. Kuanita E. Murphy, as you embark on the next chapter of your journey, please know that your guidance has been a compass for us, and your absence will be felt in the boardroom where you led with such excellence. DOUBLE THE CREDIT, DOUBLE THE OPPORTUNITY:
22 ®
NAVIGATING DUAL ENROLLMENT Georgia’s Technical College System (TCSG) offers an innovative Dual Enrollment Program that stands as a beacon of opportunity for high school students. This program is not just a pathway to higher education; it's a strategic move for those aiming to attend a four-year university or swiftly enter the workforce. With the option to earn double the credit in half the time, dual enrollment at ATC is a gateway to success. One of the most compelling aspects of dual enrollment is the financial advantage it offers. Imagine having the first 30 hours of your college education fully paid for. This is a tangible, financial relief for families and students. The program covers tuition, fees, and book costs for eligible students. Eligibility for this program is broad, encompassing high school students from 9th to 12th grade. Special provisions exist for younger students, especially 10th graders, who have specific course and test score requirements. Dedicated Dual Enrollment staff at ATC stand ready to guide students through the program, ensuring a smooth and successful educational journey. The impact of dual enrollment extends beyond immediate academic benefits. Studies show that participants are more likely to pursue bachelor’s degrees and exhibit higher first-semester GPAs compared to their peers. This program isn't just about earning credits; it’s about introducing students to college-level coursework and potential career paths early in their academic life.
The DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM is rich in options, with a Course Directory listing of approved academic courses. Funding is structured, with a cap of 30 semester credit hours. The application process for Dual Enrollment is straightforward. Students must meet the admission criteria of ATC and complete both the Dual Enrollment Funding Application and the Parent Participation Agreement. High school counselors play a crucial role in this process, approving the funding application and course selections. The program also extends to students in home study programs. For students who have exhausted their Dual Enrollment funding, or for those seeking different educational routes, ATC offers several options. The ACCELERATED CAREER program is available to public high school students, allowing them to earn both a high school diploma and a college credential. Additionally, the Joint Enrollment Program caters to students interested in courses not covered by Dual Enrollment funding. WHAT IS JOINT ENROLLMENT? Joint Enrollment provides high school students the opportunity to take courses at ATC and receive college credit ONLY for the courses they take at the college. Joint Enrollment students usually attend college classes in the afternoon or evening after they have attended high school an entire school day. Joint Enrollment students are allowed to take academic core and occupational program courses for any technical certificate or diploma program in which they are eligible. Eighty percent (80%) of the tuition will be paid by the HOPE Grant for Georgia residents.
ATC will exempt other tuition and fees. Hours taken through Joint Enrollment count against a student’s HOPE Grant and Scholarship caps. RESOURCES Further resources are readily available for students. Websites like GAfutures.org and GAtracs offer information on course listings, funding FAQs, and transfer options. For those who have reached the 30-credit hour cap, the HOPE and Zell Miller Grants provide additional support. ATC’s Dual Enrollment Program is more than an educational opportunity; it's a strategic initiative that sets students on a path to academic and career success. For students and parents interested in exploring this opportunity, the journey begins with a step towards understanding and leveraging the resources and support available. ATC offers academic core courses transferable to TCSG and USG colleges, alongside career and occupational courses. The "Essential 18" initiative encourages high school students to accumulate at least 18 college credit hours, ensuring they reap maximum benefits from dual enrollment, regardless of their future ambitions. This initiative is particularly important, aiming to boost the program's participation for students with a minimum of a 2.0-grade point average. Students and parents interested in exploring the possibilities of Dual Enrollment, ATC provides a wealth of information and guidance. Contact nwilliams@albanytech.edu or 229.430.0909 for more info.

ATC EMBARKS ON A FUTURE OFFERING
HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMAS WITH COGNIA ACCREDITATION Opening New Doors: Cognia Accreditation Elevates Educational Offerings by the College In a significant stride towards educational innovation, Albany Technical College (ATC) proudly announces its newly granted Cognia Accreditation. This monumental achievement authorizes ATC to expand its educational offerings, providing high school diplomas that open new pathways for adult and young learners alike. DUAL ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM (AGE 16-21) The odyssey to accreditation was marked by an exacting Candidacy Review, initiated on January 19, 2023. ATC, particularly through its Academy of Learning & Performance, exhibited a profound dedication to maintaining superior educational standards and fostering constant evolution. Aaron Edmondson, Executive Director/Principal of the Academy, articulates the profound impact of this accomplishment, "Our Cognia accreditation is the fruit of ATC's tireless effort and unwavering resolve. It enables us to offer a lifeline to those who have diverged from the traditional educational journey, granting them not only a diploma but also the chance to master technical skills that are in high demand."
ADULT EDUCATION - CAREER PLUS (AGE 18+) The accreditation process involved meticulous evaluations by Cognia, assessing ATC's Dual Achievement Program and Career Plus program. These initiatives were celebrated for their efficacy in addressing the educational needs of both high school and adult learners. Linda Coston, ATC's Vice President of Adult Education, reflects on the broader implications, "Cognia accreditation is a significant enhancer of our educational landscape. It enriches the opportunities available to adult learners, allowing them to secure high school diplomas while also pursuing technical certificates or degrees. This integration of education and skills development is pivotal to individual and community progress." ATC’s path to accreditation started in 2022, with the college embracing the rigorous standards and comprehensive evaluation methods centered around the pillars of learning culture, leadership, engagement, and growth – all focused on the learner. After successfully completing the Candidacy Review and Engagement Review, ATC demonstrated its readiness and capacity to meet the stringent requirements set forth by Cognia. On July 26, 2023, ATC's dedication culminated in the receipt of the accreditation certificate, valid through June 30, 2029 (six years). This accreditation not only marks a significant milestone, but also solidifies ATC's pledge to uphold the highest standards of educational excellence and to continue its journey of perpetual enhancement. As Albany Technical College looks to the future, it stands firm in its commitment to leveraging Cognia's aligned resources and services. With a focus on continuous improvement and quality education, ATC is poised to make lasting contributions to the educational landscape and to the southwest Georgia region it serves.
THE ROLE OF COGNIA IN EDUCATION COGNIA is a comprehensive and experienced system, with over 125 years of history under its belt, dedicated to improving schools and educational institutions. It stands out from simple evaluative bodies by offering a deep, holistic assessment of schools that encompasses everything from policies and learning conditions to the broader cultural context, all aimed at better serving every student's needs. Unlike a basic inspection, COGNIA's accreditation process is an ongoing journey rather than a one-time event. This journey is rooted in rigorous, research-backed standards that guide schools not just in meeting benchmarks but in achieving continuous improvement and better outcomes for students. This organization extends its expertise beyond conventional schools, servicing a wide array of educational providers including charter schools, digital learning platforms, early learning centers, educational service agencies, nonpublic and faith-based institutions, postsecondary establishments, and more. The heart of COGNIA's
methodology lies in its Performance Standards, which are regularly updated - approximately every six years. These standards are what define the qualities of an effective educational institution and provide a strategic framework for consistent growth and improvement in various educational settings, from K-12 to postsecondary education, with specialized standards for early and extended learning programs. The accreditation process with COGNIA spans six years, offering institutions enough time to thoughtfully identify, implement, and assess improvement strategies. This extended period also allows for regular interactions and support from COGNIA's team of experts. Institutions embarking on this journey undergo three main phases: Self-Assessment, where they evaluate their current standing; Engagement, involving collaborative work with COGNIA; and Progress, focusing on ongoing improvement. A key element of this process is the Engagement Review, a thorough examination that leverages both internal evidence and external stakeholder input, paired with expert analysis from COGNIA. This review pinpoints commendable practices and areas needing enhancement, providing a clear path forward for institutions. In essence, COGNIA acts like a specialized advisor for educational institutions, guiding them not only to meet required standards but also to cultivate an optimal learning environment for their students through continuous and strategic improvements.
KEY TAKEAWAYS • Accreditation Achievement: Albany Technical College has earned Cognia accreditation, enabling the college to award high school diplomas, not just equivalency diplomas. • Dual Achievement Program: This program is part of the Academy of Learning & Performance at Albany Technical College, specifically designed for students aged 16 to 21 who need to complete their high school education. • Adult Education Career Plus: Caters to individuals aged 18 and older, offering support to those seeking to obtain their high school diploma. • Educational and Workforce Advancement: Both the Dual Achievement Program and the Adult Education Career Plus emphasize the importance of educational attainment in conjunction with workforce development, allowing students, ages 16 and older, to pursue their diplomas while making strides in their career growth.
