Welcome to the latest issue of ACCESS!

What is talent? Who has talent? Do all individuals have the right to rise as far as talent will take them? Do all individuals have the responsibility to utilize their talent for the benefit of their family and community? My observations over the past almost 67 years about talent keeps me optimistic about the continued greatness of my country and my state. I’ve noted that talent is no respecter of race. Most of us know people who are Black, Caucasian, Oriental and Hispanic who exhibit greatness. Talent is no respecter of gender. We know men and women who are truck drivers, nurses, physicians, fire fighters, military officers, attorneys, etc. Talent is no respecter of affluence. Starting life with family privilege does not guarantee one to have the talent needed to exhibit greatness. Talent is no respecter of age. Many will provide their greatest contributions as an AARP member while others may exhibit greatness for the first time as an

adolescence. Talent is no respecter of geography. Citizens from California and New York are no more likely to have any additional talent than citizens from Georgia or New Mexico. Talent is no respecter of national origin. Citizens who have ancestors from Norway are no more likely to have more talent than those with ancestry from Rhodesia. Talent, still however, is not distributed equally. It would be ridiculous to assume that each golfer has the talent to play as well as Tiger Woods. No matter how much we practice, most of us will not likely play the piano as well as Alicia Keys. No matter how much we study, few will be as great an inventor as Thomas Edison or as great a scientist as George Washington Carver. Each of us, however, has the ability to do something well, and most of us have several talents. Each of us can be great at something, and all talents have the potential for development.

According to the Hebrew Bible, none of us have the right to waste our talents. They are gifts provided by GOD. If so, they must be nurtured, developed and strengthened through education. Talent should be used for the betterment of your family, community, and personal wellbeing. Each of us are trustees of our GOD given talent. The Georgia Department of Education, the University System of Georgia, and especially the Technical College System of Georgia are available to assist you in developing and nurturing what has been bestowed upon you.

PHARMACY TECHNOLOGY Lab Upgrades To Include a Simulation Retail Lab

“The new simulated experience here at Albany Technical College’s Pharmacy Technology department will really up the level our students experience and will prepare them for the workforce. This is an exciting change and I think students will really benefit from the investment that the college has made.”

Interview with Dr. JaNee Mobley, Pharmacy Technology Program Chair and Instructor at Albany Technical College Albany Technical College held a ribbon-cutting November 14 in the new Pharmacy lab on campus. This renovation creates a simulation of a retail area that demonstrates what students in the Pharmacy Technology Program will experience when in a realworld environment. The new lab is a community/ retail pharmacy simulated lab that will allow students to gain practice and knowledge on how to operate and perform as a pharmacy technician who works at a Walgreens, CVS, or independent community

pharmacy. They will learn communication skills, problem-solving skills, how to receive correctly, transcribe, and fill a prescription and use a point-of-sale (POS), as well as many more job-related tasks.  Dr. JaNee Mobley, Program Chair of Pharmacy Technology, stated, “We are proud to announce the expansion of the program here at Albany Technical College with the addition of a new retail training lab. This enhancement to the curriculum will teach realworld practical applications, preparing our students for jobs right here in the community.”  Pharmacy technicians help licensed pharmacists prepare

prescription medications, provide customer service, and perform administrative duties within a pharmacy setting. Pharmacy technicians generally are responsible for receiving prescription requests, counting tablets, and labeling bottles. Pharmacy technicians have the following prospects for employment: retail locations, hospitals, nursing homes, and correctional facility pharmacies.  A total of 56 credit hours are required for the diploma and 65 are required for the degree. The Pharmacy Technology degree at Albany Technical College is designed to provide an individual with the entry-level skills required

for success in a retail pharmacy or a hospital-based pharmacy department. Learning opportunities develop academic and professional knowledge and skills required for job acquisition, retention, and replacement. Graduates are prepared to function as pharmacy technicians in positions requiring preparations of medications according to prescription under the supervision of a pharmacist. The Pharmacy Technology diploma at Albany Technical College is designed to enable the student to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for employment within a pharmacy. Program graduates will be able to perform a variety of technical duties related to preparing and dispensing drugs following standard

procedures and laws under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. A variety of clinical experiences is designed to integrate theory and practice. Graduates will be employable as an entrylevel pharmacy technician. There is a certification exam that is required. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) is a computer-based exam administered at Pearson VUE test centers nationwide. PTCE scores are used to identify pharmacy technicians who meet a particular baseline of knowledge and skills necessary to work as a certified pharmacy technician. The PTCE is required to work in some states as a pharmacy technician, but not in the state of Georgia. Pharmacy Technician Recertification Requirements: • Complete a minimum of 20 hours of Continuing Education during your two-year recertification period, including: • 1 hour in the subject of pharmacy law • 1 hour in the subject of patient safety • Continuing Education hours earned must be in pharmacy technicianspecific subject matter as outlined in the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination Blueprint or offered by ACPE-accredited providers with the target audience designation “T.” Albany Technical College does not offer continuing education courses at this time as a part of Pharmacy. Employment of pharmacy technicians is projected to grow 7 percent from 2018 to 2028, faster than the average for all

occupations. Increased demand for prescription medications will lead to more demand for pharmaceutical services. The increased number of middle-aged and older adults—who use more prescription drugs than younger people—will spur demand for pharmacy workers throughout the projection period. Also, as scientific advances lead to new medications, and as more people obtain prescription drug coverage, pharmacy workers will be needed in growing numbers.  Program Admission Information:  Attends a high school, possesses a high school equivalency certificate or is a high school graduate; Illicit drug use, criminal background checks, and immunization status may prevent future employment as a pharmacy technician. That externship sites, employers, and State Boards of Pharmacy have regulations about drug use, criminal backgrounds, and immunization status. Albany Technical College’s Pharmacy Technology Program is accredited by ASHP (American Society of HealthSystems Pharmacist).

RIBBON-CUTTING CEREMONY Albany Technical College held a ribbon-cutting November 14 in the new Pharmacy lab on campus. This renovation creates a simulation of a retail area that demonstrates what students in the Pharmacy Technology Program will experience when in a real-world environment.

ADVANCED MEDICAL IMAGING DEGREE

KEEPING UP WITH THE LATEST INNOVATIONS AND DEMANDS OF THE INDUSTRY

OFFERED SPRING 2020 Radiologic Technology was started at Albany Technical College in 1980. The Associate of Applied Science in Radiologic Technology is the entry-level degree for those pursuing a career in Radiologic Technology. 64 credit hours are required to complete this program. It has grown through the years and continues to evolve with the needs and technology shifts of the medical industry. The program emphasizes a combination of classroom and clinical instruction necessary for successful employment. Program graduates will receive an Associate of Applied Science degree in Radiologic Technology, have the qualifications of a radiographer and will be eligible to sit for a national certification examination for radiographers given by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). The Advanced Medical Imaging Associate of Applied Science Degree program provides educational opportunities to the postgraduate registered Radiologic Technologist, registered Radiation Therapist and registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist. It provides the students with the knowledge needed to perform MRI and CT exams and to sit for the Post-Primary Magnetic Resonance

Imaging Certification Examination and/or the Post-Primary Computed Tomography Certification Examination. The academic component is designed to meet content specifications of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) exam in Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Computed Tomography, as well as providing for continuing educational requirements. In addition to the Advanced Medical Imaging Degree, students may also opt to only complete the certificate for Computed Tomography Specialist or Magnetic Resonance Imaging Specialist. These are stand-alone certifications and will prepare registered technologist to be eligible to sit for the ARRT certification exams in either specialty. For the Computed Tomography certificate, the students will complete approximately 300 hours of clinical experience. For the Magnetic Resonance certificate, student will complete approximately 450 hours of clinical experience. Lisa Stephens, Dean of Healthcare/Business Technology stated, “We are proud to announce the expansion of the program

7+7 Semesters”. The idea is to reduce the number of courses that a full-time student is taking at any given 7-week period and increasing the number of terms per year creating a system where student success is most likely. Couple that with online and hybrid courses that create opportunities to work around a student’s life. The delivery system for education becomes more flexible.

Students may enter the major at any point during Academic Year, however, the CT courses will begin in the Summer of each year and the MRI will begin in the Fall each year.

This approach is the best solution for the hectic lifestyle of the average person. This simple concept works by using a shortened format. This process allows students to take courses and earn credits more frequently while giving them fewer courses to focus on per seven-week period. Students will have opportunities to start classes in a quicker cycle.  The Radiology didactic (educational) courses will be offered on the Success Terms 7+7 and the clinical courses will be offered on the 15-week semesters.

“Advanced Medical Imaging is the latest technology in the radiology world. To see it come to Albany Tech is exciting. Keeping up with the latest innovations and demands of the industry enables us to give employers relevant and up-to-date training for students,” said Stephens. industry is headed, and we intend to make sure that students are on the cutting edge of the future trends in imaging.” Radiologic Technologists held about 241,700 jobs in 2016. Most of all jobs were in hospitals. Most other jobs were in offices of physicians; medical and diagnostic laboratories, including diagnostic imaging centers; and outpatient care centers. Job openings will arise from the need to replace technologists who leave the occupation. Employment is expected to grow between 2016 and 2026 by 12%. Those with knowledge of more than one diagnostic imaging procedure-such as CT, MR, and mammography-will have the best employment opportunities as employers seek to control costs by using multi- credentialed employees.

She first enrolled here at Albany Tech and received her Customer Contact Specialist Certificate in 2011. During that same year she received a Supply Chain Management certificate. Chulena didn’t stop there; in 2012 she continued her education here at Albany Tech by completing her Associate Degree in Business Logistics Management. Chulena then enrolled in the Workforce Education and Development program at Valdosta State University where she earned her Bachelors of Science Degree in 2015. Chulena has a unique role on campus. She works with students across the academic performance continuum, working with students who are in academic difficulty, as a resource for students, faculty, and staff across campus. There is little that is more fulfilling to her than assisting Albany Tech students in developing and realizing their goals because she can relate to their difficulty in juggling both academic and personal life. She has developed a passion for advising students and assisting them in reaching both their educational career and personal goals. During her down time she enjoys reading, watching television and spending time with her family.
