AUTO COLLISION REPAIR TECHNOLOGY Automotive body and related repairers, often called collision repair technicians, straighten bent bodies, remove dents, and replace crumpled parts that cannot be fixed. They repair all types of vehicles, including large trucks, buses, or tractortrailers; however, most work on cars and small trucks. They can work alone, with only general direction from supervisors, or as specialists on a repair team. In some shops, helpers or apprentices assist experienced repairers. The Auto Collision Repair Technology program introduces students to automotive plastic and sheet molded compound repair, refinishing, estimating repairs, color analysis and matching, suspension systems, and structural analysis and damage repair. Students graduate with an understanding of how to assess and repair damages by knowing the proper techniques and tools needed to repair a damaged vehicle. Auto Collision Repair Technology combines training in Major Collision Repair and Refinishing. Since Automotive Collision Repair covers a wide variety of technical skills, our graduates are easily placed in the industry. Graduates are prepared to work in automotive collision and refinishing repair facilities, heavy equipment repair facilities such as Trans Power and Yancey. Agricultural Facilities as well as Aeronautics Facilities such as Thrush. We have an ongoing relationship with the Marine Corps Logistics Base that allows graduate placement in areas such as sandblasting, fiberglass, and paint and body shops.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR CONTINUED EDUCATION Students will be able to take the introductory knowledge gained from the program and attend more advanced level institutions such as Universal Technical Institute (UTI), Wyo Tech and training facilities managed by paint manufacturers and automotive manufacturers that have brand-specific training.

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY The Automotive Technology program offers a broad line of courses ranging from basic repairs to the more advanced diagnostic repairs associated with today’s ever-changing automobiles. Students will learn skills from replacing brake pads and bleeding the brake system, to troubleshooting engine performance problems with lab scopes and meters. Automotive service technicians inspect, maintain, and repair automobiles and light-duty trucks that run on gasoline, electricity, or alternative fuels, such as ethanol. They perform basic care maintenance, such as oil changes and tire rotations, diagnose more complex problems, and plan and execute vehicle repairs. Automotive service technicians’ and mechanics’ responsibilities have evolved from simple mechanical repairs to high-level technology-related work. Today, integrated electronic systems and sophisticated computers regulate vehicles and their performance while on the road. This increasing sophistication of automobiles requires workers who can use computerized shop equipment and work with electronic components while maintaining their skills with traditional hand tools. Technicians must have an increasingly broad knowledge of how vehicles’ complex components work and interact. They also must be able to work with electronic diagnostic equipment and digital manuals and reference materials.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES The Automotive Technology program equips graduates with the skills for employment as an entry-level mechanic/technician in the automotive field. Continued growth in the number of vehicles will lead to new jobs for workers performing basic car maintenance and repair. More entry-level workers will be needed to perform these services, such as oil changes and replacing worn brakes. Additionally, the average lifespan of vehicles is increasing, which will further increase the demand for repair services, especially post-warranty work. The increasing use of advanced technology in automobiles will also lead to new opportunities for repair technicians, especially those with specialized skills or certifications. Employees with expertise in specific makes or models of vehicles, or with an advanced understanding of individual systems, such as hybrid-fuel technology, will be in demand. There are many other opportunities available in the automotive field with some requiring more education including; automotive engineer, auto sales, automotive instructor, tire technician and parts sales.
CERTIFICATE Commercial Driving - Class A Commercial Truck Driving - Owner Operator Certificate
COMMERCIAL TRUCK DRIVING The Commercial Truck Driving program provides training for individuals seeking the opportunity to earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). After eight weeks of intense training, graduates are prepared for a rewarding career as a commercial truck driver. Ninety-eight percent of students in the program have never driven a large vehicle, and in fact, many have never shifted manual gears. Individuals seeking a CDL will learn the operation of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) in a series of steps aimed at gaining confidence to become competent as a professional driver. Step one training begins with safety and familiarizing students with the truck and trailer by teaching them how to properly perform pre-trip checks on the vehicle. In step two, students are instructed on the skills necessary to properly back the CMV using six different state-approved maneuvers. Successful completion of these two tests gives way to the final step, the road test. Individuals will demonstrate their ability to navigate and maneuver a CMV on various roads and terrain. Students will be evaluated on performance and must pass two evaluations with two different instructors with a pass rate of eighty percent or higher after each step in order to proceed to the next step.
Upon successful completion of the Commercial Truck Driving course, students will be tested by the State of Georgia to obtain their commercial driver’s license and receive a Commercial Truck Driving certificate from the College.

DIESEL EQUIPMENT TECHNOLOGY Diesel service technicians and mechanics inspect, repair, and overhaul buses and trucks or maintain and repair any diesel engine. Qualified technicians can be expected to work in government, motor parts and vehicle wholesale, manufacturing, repair and maintenance and truck transportation. The Diesel Equipment Technology program emphasizes hands-on training for a combination of truck, heavy equipment, marine systems, or emergency power generator repair depending on the diploma specialization a student chooses to complete. Program graduates are qualified as entry-level Diesel Equipment technicians. Diesel Equipment Technology utilizes some of the latest training aids on the market. One unique piece of training equipment available to the program is a fully functional 6.7-liter turbo diesel engine that is mounted on a mobile rack. It is used to easily train students on a running engine and the new diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system. Other training equipment includes: two Caterpillar engines, one Cummins engine, one complete steering axle/differential group from a Telescopic Handler (a rough terrain forklift), and one complete Hydraulic, which comes complete with a hydraulic motor.
Employers increasingly prefer applicants who have completed postsecondary training programs in diesel engine repair. Also, industry certification may be necessary. Following a structured program is imperative and required by most employers.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES/INTERNSHIPS There is a high demand for qualified Diesel Technicians in Albany and the surrounding area. Albany Tech is committed to the process of training and placing employees in jobs with sustainable salaries. Working relationships with employers is an essential part of the process. The Diesel Equipment Technology program offers multiple internships and apprenticeships in Dougherty County and throughout the Albany Technical College service area.

ADMISSIONS TESTING
ATC uses the Accuplacer-Next Generation exam for measuring proficiency in reading, writing and math. Applicants must achieve minimum admissions scores on the exam as specified in the program state standards or acceptable scores on a statistically validated test such as the SAT or ACT. Program-specific entrance scores are a minimum requirement, and higher scores may be required. Reasonable accommodations are made during testing for those who need them. (The examiner should be notified prior to testing.)
FINANCIAL AID
ATC offers several types of financial assistance to help qualified applicants pay for their education. Funds are available through the Federal Pell Grant, the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Work-Study and the Georgia HOPE programs. Students may also receive assistance through the Job Training Partnership Act, operated by the Georgia Department of Labor, or the Veterans Educational Assistance Program, administered by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. Sufficient financial assistance is available to provide the opportunity for eligible students to attend college. Grant and scholarship programs operate on an award-year beginning in August and ending in July. Students must apply or re-apply each year to receive or continue to receive financial aid.
