Developing a Workforce that is Relevant and Properly Trained Industry relationships within the community is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a two year college. Albany Technical College has built a strong partnership with this community. Job placement at the college is near 100%. Everyone from the administration to the deans and instructors all realizes the importance of not only teaching but also retention and placement of the student in a viable and decent paying job after graduation. DRIVING EQUALS INDEPENDENCE

ALBANY TECH TEACHES ADULTS HOW TO DRIVE For some individuals, a lack of transportation might be a barrier to employment. Access to a vehicle and the ability to drive that vehicle greatly enhances a person’s ability to find and keep a job. Adults who have never learned to drive can take driving instruction at Albany Tech. Many people are aware that the Center for Business Solutions is a provider for Joshua’s Law Driver’s Education for teens. But in addition to teen driver’s training, CBS also trains adults who don’t know how to drive or who need additional practice. For an enrollment fee of $300, adults 18 and over receive six hours behind the wheel one-on-one with an experienced instructor. Our instructors have flexible schedules, and can provide instruction in the morning, afternoon, evening and weekends. Six hours on the road is broken up into 1-2 hour sessions. Students feel more comfortable behind the wheel after Albany Tech’s One-On-One Driving Instruction for

Adults. Instructors go over rules of the road, so that after a little more practice in their own vehicle, a student will be ready to take their license exam. If a student cannot come to our campus to meet their driving instructor, the instructor can pick them up and return them home if they live in the Dougherty/Lee County area. There is an additional $25 fee for this pick-up service.

WHAT: Driver’s Training for Adults WHEN: Offered year-round. Appointments are scheduled according to the needs and schedule of the student.

HOW LONG: Our training consists of six

hours behind the wheel. These six hours are broken up into 1-2 hour sessions and are scheduled at the student’s convenience. Students normally complete their six hours of training within a week or two.

Our goal is to help individuals obtain the freedom and independence that comes from having a driver’s license so they can improve their professional and personal lives. For more information, or to enroll in driver training, call the Center for Business Solutions at 229-430-3867.

the Albany Tech campus, or pay an additional $25 for the instructor to pick you up. Pick up service provided in the Dougherty and Lee County areas.

We had a chance to apply what we learned in class by creating a contract for the property.

Center for Business Solutions Success Story: REAL ESTATE SALES Anyone who has ever considered a career as a real estate salesperson probably knows that the road to success is not an easy one, but it is worth the challenge. Individuals can take the first step to a Real Estate career at Albany Tech. In 2017, the Center for Business Solutions at Albany Tech became a Real Estate school approved by the Georgia Real Estate Commission. CBS is approved to offer the Georgia Real Estate Pre-License Salesperson Course, the 75-hour course that is mandatory for anyone wishing to sit for the state licensing exam. CBS offers this course in a traditional faceto-face classroom format in the evenings. This allows those with full-time day jobs the

opportunity to interact with an experienced local teacher and fellow students. They can ask questions and benefit from guest speakers and field trips to listed property. For those individuals who feel that face-to-face instruction is the learning format that works best for them, this class is a great option. Sal Giovingo is the instructor for CBS’ course. He has been a realtor with Albany Century 21 for many years, and has taught the pre-license course for over 20 years. He comes equipped with real-world experience as a broker. Our course boasts a high pass rate, but this course is only the first step. Those who pass the course and meet the attendance requirements are then required to pass the state exam in order to become a licensed real estate sales person in Georgia. Three students from the most recently7

completed course have reached that goal. Tiffany Allen, Yarnia Blackmon, and Katrina Phillips were all classmates in the Spring 2019 course that ended in May. All three have passed their state exam and are on their way to careers in real estate. Allen and Blackmon joined the class as a restaurant manager and school bus driver respectively. Both say they plan to ease into the field, starting slowly, building contacts and learning about the business from pros. “I felt that God was leading me to do something different, to step out of my comfort zone,” Allen says. She didn’t know what to expect when signing-up, and was surprised at the amount of information she was required to retain. The rigor makes her proud of her accomplishments. “The class is hard because it’s supposed to be,” she says. The advice she offers to future students is “Don’t take it lightly-pay attention in class and study the material,” she says.

But she adds that while challenging, the class was fun. “Sal is a great teacher,” she says. “He makes it fun by sharing his real life experiences. We laughed and had fun while learning.” Blackmon also enjoyed Giovingo’s real world examples and caring attitude. “Sal is very knowledgeable and is also really interested in helping his students pass,” she says. Blackmon derived great benefit from the field trip taken several weeks into the session. “At the listed home, we got to see and touch real property. And we had the chance to apply what we learned in class by creating a contract for the property.” Blackmon recommends the course to anyone who is willing to invest the time and energy to study and prepare. “Everyone knows that Real Estate can be a lucrative business,” she says. “However, if one practices Real Estate with a love for helping people find their special home, rather than getting rich, the rewards can be immense.” Phillips transformed a background in homebuilding and renovation into a real estate career. She is now a member of the Albany Board of Realtors and National Association of Realtors. She currently has two properties listed, with two more to be listed

soon. “All of my life I have been involved with home improvement,” Phillips says. “As a child, my parents built every home we lived in, except for one. My first renovation project was my own first home at the age of 19. My husband and I have renovated two homes.” This experience, coupled with her desire to help others, led her to Albany Tech’s Real Estate course. Phillips appreciated that her classmates and the instructor all seemed to “work well together and feed off each other.” The class worked on everything as a team, ensuring that every student understood each concept. She suggests entering the Real Estate course with realistic expectations. “Becoming a Realtor is not an easy task,” she says. She advises that a potential student should have “patience, communication skills, time management skills, the ability to multitask, as well as the ability to apply the information learned to different scenarios.” Like Allen, Blackmon, and Phillips, you may also have what it takes to become a licensed Real Estate Salesperson. To take the first step, contact the Center for Business Solutions at 229-430-3867. The next evening course begins in early 2020.

CBS partners with Department of Corrections for training in Transitional Centers The Economic Development Divisions of technical colleges around the state have entered into a partnership with the Georgia Department of Corrections. The Technical College System of Georgia’s institutions agree to provide Forklift, ServSafe , and OSHA 10 training to residents of Transitional Centers around the state. R

A Transitional Center is a facility where, after serving time within the state's prisons, selected offenders are slowly reintegrated back into society with a job and enhanced prospects for stability. Research has shown that offenders who have the opportunity to reenter the community after a stay in a Transitional Center are up to 1/3 more likely to succeed in maintaining a crime-free life. There are 15 Transitional Centers in operation statewide. To have the opportunity to transfer to a Transitional Center, an offender must receive a referral from either the Board of Pardons of Paroles or the Classification Committee within a state prison. One function of Transitional Centers is to provide "work release", allowing the

offender to obtain and maintain a paying job in the community while requiring him or her to conform to the structure of the program. The offender lives in the center, participates in a number of programs, and completes assignments to contribute to the upkeep of the center. The Center for Business Solutions, as the Economic Development arm of Albany Tech, is serving the Albany Transitional Center with OSHA 10 classes, held onsite at the Center. The first OSHA 10 course, offered in early October, had a roster of 20 Transitional Center residents. These men attended class two nights a week for two weeks, earning their OSHA 10 certification. Most of them attended class after working a full day. The hope is that an OSHA 10 certification will be a valuable credential on the offender’s resume when that individual is seeking permanent employment after release. The Center for Business Solutions is proud to partner with the Department of Corrections on this important project, which could change these offenders lives for the better. 14
