Moving forward and ready to serve our business community Southwest Georgia citizens are coming to the end of the first, and I pray, the last full year of the COVID-19 era. The pandemic caused many of the businesses and organizations served by Albany Technical College had to reinvent how they operate. While many of us were able to work from home, others had to continue from their traditional places of business. Manufacturing and logistical workers, along with first responders and other essential workers, kept the economy going. Most members of these groups couldn’t work from home. I’m sure that the work done by essential workers will be the catalyst for the economic rebound. When others were sheltering in place, they were producing. They repaired military equipment, produced paper products, brewed beer, and made food products. Essential workers in SW Georgia managed the worldwide supply chains that kept retailers supplied with toilet paper and paper towels. Hospitals, clinics, and physician offices learned to serve patients with less acute medical concerns through virtual reality. Pharmacies filled prescriptions. CDL drivers made deliveries. Firefighters, police officers, and EMTs came when they were needed. It seems counterintuitive, but many organizations increased productivity.

continuing education. As businesses and organizations are ready to embrace the new normal, know that we are prepared to serve you. We look forward to working with the region’s employers to continue increasing production and expanding the workforce. Sincerely,

Anthony O. Parker, Ph.D. President, Albany Technical College

A technical college curriculum is as unique as the community it serves.

Frequently, organizations that employ essential workers could not move forward with planned workforce training. It was appropriate to place safety and productivity ahead of training. Soon the COVID related precautions that we put in place, along with vaccinations, will begin to create herd immunity. The Center for Business Solutions at Albany Technical College is prepared to provide contract training and occupational

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO MANUFACTURING JOBS Industrial Operations Technician Program and IOT Internships Many high school students graduate from high school a step ahead of their classmates by earning college credits through a dual-enrollment program. Princeton Qualls earned college credit from Albany Technical College while a student at Dougherty High School. Qualls attended the Commodore Conyers College & Career Academy (4C) in addition to Dougherty High. It was through 4C that he became enrolled in Albany Tech’s Industrial Operations Technician (IOT) program, an 18-hour Technical Certificate of Credit program. “My school counselor recommended the IOT program,” Qualls says. “She thought that it would be a great opportunity for me.”

people, and show energy and confidence. The first impression is important.” Once they are brought into the plant, P&G interns have the opportunity to talk to people throughout the plant and learn about their jobs. They take part in hands-on learning on the floor. “They let us run sections of the machines,” Qualls said. “If there was an issue with the line or if the productivity needed to improve, they let us solve the problem.” The P&G interns of 2020 were impacted by Covid-19, and unfortunately, the internships ended after only a few months. However, Qualls was invited back to the plant in October and offered a permanent position there. Qualls understands that he was presented a wonderful opportunity to have a job that is highly-coveted in Southwest Georgia. He ultimately decided to return to school full time, and is now attending Georgia Southern University as a Biology major, hoping to fulfill his dream of becoming a doctor or bio-chemist.

The Industrial Operations Technician program is designed to provide area manufacturers with an entry level pool of applicants that are ready-for-hire. Graduates from the IOT program will have skills that will develop manufacturing abilities and build the technical fundamentals which will allow for accelerated growth in the work force. Coursework covers operations management, industrial mechanics, safety practices in the workplace, Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification focusing on process improvement, and soft skills needed for the workplace including interpersonal relations. Industry leaders helped design the curriculum for the IOT program, ensuring that graduates have the skills they need to be ready-for-hire at a local plant.

For high schoolers considering the dual-enrollment IOT program, or students of any age who desire a career in manufacturing, Qualls has this advice to offer: “If you invest yourself in the IOT program, it will be beneficial for you. You will learn a lot about how to present yourself, how to engage others, and if you end up with a job in a local manufacturing plant, the money isn’t all that bad either.”

IOT Internships The 4C students enrolled in the IOT program have an incentive to work hard in the courses. The best of the best will be able to apply for paid internships at Albany’s Procter & Gamble plant. Early in 2020, Qualls was one of 15 students who applied for a P&G internship, and one of the five students who were selected. Before applying for the internship, 4C students brushed up on interview skills. “We learned how to shake hands and look people in the eye,” said Qualls. “We learned how to engage

The Center for Business Solutions will offer courses in Excel for Beginners, Intermediate Excel, and Advanced Excel in a hybrid format. What is a hybrid format? When a class is offered in a hybrid format that means that the lessons are found online and the students log-in and participate in the lessons on their own schedule during a certain time period. However, there is a live (virtual) component to every hybrid class. In the case of our Excel classes, the instructor, Janice Bullman, will have two live sessions for the Beginner class, and one live session each for the Intermediate and Advanced classes.
