Logistics Education Center Auditorium + Executive Board Room Technology is an asset for any training facility, but with the technology options available through Albany Technical College’s Logistics Education Center Auditorium, the possibilities are endless.

A 76-chair facility offering technology features such as multiple cameras, cable, multiple large LCD screens, including stage four-set and four audience dropdowns, the Logistics Education Center is an ideal venue for both medium- to large-sized meetings and training sessions.

Kirkland Conference Center A multi-purpose room that can be arranged to handle a banquet, large classroom setting, or even a theatre is what you’ll find with Albany Tech’s George M. Kirkland Conference Center.

A 4,000-square-foot facility, the Kirkland Conference Center can hold up to 600 people. The various floor arrangements in the facility are endless with partitions available and circular and rectangular tables.

In addition, the technology capabilities of the Auditorium are endless with multiple cameras, cable, podium with wired microphone, wireless microphones, and much more.

Lean Six Sigma Program Beneficial to MillerCoors Albany Employee Process Leader Jeff Goodson Finds Albany Tech’s Lean Six Sigma Beneficial In More Ways than One With 20 years of experience in the manufacturing environment, including process improvements and waste reductions, Jeff Goodson has been working to support the newly organized focused improvement team in the brewing department at MillerCoors for about a year.

Having worked at MillerCoors for just eight years, Goodson said the last year has been a new experience for him with the project in the brewing department. He has been involved in troubleshooting and in improving the manufacturing processes . It wasn’t until recently that he was asked to provide support to the department’s Focused Improvement Team, that he found Albany Technical College’s Lean Six Sigma program to be beneficial in more ways than one.

After reviewing the available training

materials that the company had to offer, he approached his manager about the additional training that might be available to improve his understanding of the thought process behind manufacturing process improvements and waste reduction.Through the training department, he discovered the Lean Six Sigma offerings at Albany Tech and proceeded to hold an interview with the instructor, Dr. Steve Eidson, who explained how the material covered many of the process improvement and waste reduction philosophies that all companies utilize to remain competitive in today’s market. In fact, the approach was very much in line with the approach MillerCoors was taking.

Goodson believes that Lean Six Sigma training has been very beneficial in broadening his understanding and in giving him exposure to different approaches to process optimization

and waste reduction.

“I have been able to improve my skills in listening to the voice of the customer, evaluating current process maps, and making changes that drive improvement,” said Goodson.

Albany Tech’s Lean Six Sigma is 90 percent online with just six days of in-classroom training during the semester. Goodson says that Dr. Eidson’s life experiences, combined with the key course modules help with relaying the information in a practical way.

With the online modules being very informative and covering a wide range of process improvement and waste reduction topics, the online modules are also supplemented with the electronic text.

Six Sigma concepts into his improvement areas.

With the focused improvement team that he supports, Goodson said they work to improve all aspects of their operation (Safety, People, Quality, Service, Cost, and Sustainability). He said some of the examples of actual projects he incorporated includes a spaghetti diagram to rearrange a floor plan to make the work area safer, process maps and Gantt charts to study complex multitask operations to decrease turnaround time increasing customer service, as well as short interval control charts and histograms to monitor key performance indicators to reduce process variation.

Having already completed the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and currently working on the Black Belt, Goodson says that he is also planning to enroll in Albany Tech’s Project Management program in the future.

“I recommend the course to anyone who would like to systematically make improvements to their business processes,” said Goodson.

DRIVER’S EDUCATION

Driver’s Education CBS Offers Course to both High School Students and One-on-One Training for Adults The Center for Business Solutions at Albany Technical College offers driver’s education options to both high school students and training for adults.

For high school students, the 36-hour course consists of 30 hours in-class training and six hours behind-the-wheel training. Scheduled once every semester, the course is held at the local area high school where the student attends or on the Albany Tech campus.The location is dependent upon enrollment numbers and is determined by the driver’s education instructor and the CBS Director of Continuing Education.

All students must pay and register for the class in the CBS office located at the west entrance of the campus off South Slappey Boulevard in the Manufacturing Technology Center.

For adults wishing to train, the one-on-one driver’s education course is usually a six-hour course strictly behind-the-wheel training.

Cost for high school students is $250 and for adults who come to ATC, $300; for adults needed to be picked up at their residence, $325.

Industrial Systems Technology Prepare for a career as an Industrial Systems Technician/Electrician Albany Technical College offers both a diploma and associate degree in Industrial Systems Technology.The program is designed for the student who wants to prepare for a career as an Industrial Systems Technician/Electrician.

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree and diploma programs teach skills in Industrial Systems Technology, providing background skills in several areas of industrial maintenance, including electronics, industrial wiring, motors, controls, PLC’s, instrumentation, fluid power, mechanical, pumps and piping, and computers.

Industrial Systems

Graduates of the program received an Industrial Systems Technology AAS degree or diploma that qualifies them for employment as industrial electricians or industrial systems technicians.

Additionally, there is an internship program with MARS Chocolate North America for students who have completed 50 percent of the program and interview and are hired through MARS. There is a limited number of interns.

For those working in the field, the program also provides opportunities to retrain or upgrade present knowledge and skills.

CUSTOMIZED TRAINING

Customized Training with CBS

Customized Training through CBS Helps the Southwest Georgia Region Continue to be Successful Many services are offered through the Center for Business Solutions (CBS) at Albany Technical College. However, the primary function of CBS is to offer business and industry partners the assistance they need in order to continue to be successful in the Southwest Georgia region.This is achieved through the Business and Industry Services portion of CBS. CBS offers standard programs in Customer Service,Warehousing, Lean Six Sigma (both the Green Belt and Black Belt levels), Project Management, and High Performance Leadership.These may be offered as either credit programs or contract training on a cost per hour basis. Some of the companies or organizations that have taken advantage of these programs are Perdue Farms, Procter & Gamble, Mars Chocolate, the City of Albany, and the Marine Corps Logistics Base (LOGCOM).

For companies with specialized needs, CBS can offer customized contract training. CBS associates meet with representatives of the organization to determine the exact nature of their needs and designs training to provide specific responses to meet customer requirements, deliver training in a timely and cost effective manner, and perform follow-up evaluations to make sure they have satisfied all the needs of the organization.

Responding to the needs of each organization in the community is a major priority for CBS. “It is important to us that organizations thrive 10 | solutions | Albany Technical College | fall 2014

and continue to grow in our area,” said Dr. Steve Eidson, Associate Dean, CBS at Albany Tech.

In response to specific needs from business and industry, training programs have been developed for Perdue Farms, Perry, GA; Power Tech, Moultrie, GA; Dougherty County School System IT Department, Albany, GA; Procter & Gamble, Albany, GA; and MillerCoors, Albany, GA, among others.

CBS has the capacity to meet a wide range of training needs with in-house personnel. For those situations requiring expertise outside the capabilities of CBS, resources are available through the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG).

“We want to be a major source of support for those efforts to improve the skill sets of employees and to increase your productivity and effectiveness,” added Eidson.

CBS STAFF HIGHLIGHT

CBS Staff Highlight Matt Trice joined Albany Technical College in 2002 as he puts it “coming full circle in the Economic Development profession.” After graduating from Auburn University in 1987 with a degree in Public Administration and a minor in Public Relations/Broadcast Journalism,Trice joined the Middle Georgia Area Planning & Development Commission (later RDC and now Regional Commission) as the Director of Government Services. In that capacity, he was responsible for HR-related functions for member governments, re-codification of cities’ codes of ordinance, grants administration and also handled the Public Relations and Outreach functions for the Commission.During that time, he also administered all of the Federal and State grants awarded to the City of Macon and handled the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for non-entitlement cities and counties in the Region.

Following his stint with the Regional Commission,Trice was hired as the President of the Bainbridge-Decatur County Chamber of Commerce and Development Authority. In this capacity, he was responsible for the master planning of the two publically owned industrial parks, the implementation of a retiree recruitment program, gaining city and county government approval and funding for a speculative building program and the expansion projects for Amoco Fabrics & Fibers and American Electric.

After leaving Bainbridge,Trice was hired by the Georgia Department of Economic Development as the first of three Economic Development Officers and was assigned to the Southwest Georgia Region. He worked with and assisted communities in preparing for economic development projects and managed expansion projects taking place in the Region.

His next stop was President of the Vidalia-Toombs County Chamber of Commerce and Development Authority.While in Vidalia,Trane (heating &air) doubled in size and purchased the remaining speculative building in Toombs Corporate Park. He was instrumental in transferring property to Southeastern Technical College in order to house the College’s CDL program and driving range on the remaining acreage in the Park.Trice led the efforts to purchase 200 acres on US 1 in Lyons, GA as the location for the community’s new industrial park. Since the purchase, the park has been fully developed and is now home to two new manufacturing industries and a new speculative building. He also spearheaded the effort to have Toombs County Commission continue funding economic development through the levying of a half million dollars used expressly for economic development through the Chamber & Development Authority. During his tenure, he led the efforts that resulted in the consolidation of the Vidalia-Toombs County Chamber of Commerce and the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce resulting in a two-county Chamber of Commerce that was the first in the State of Georgia.

Trice moved to Gainesville, Georgia to become the Executive Vice President for Economic Development at the Gainesville-Hall County Chamber of Commerce.While there, he was involved in recruitment and expansion projects that created over 1500 new jobs and resulted in over $335 million in capital investment.

Trice is originally from Columbus, Georgia and graduated from High School in Bainbridge. His father is a retired United Methodist Minister and his mother is a retired Tennis Professional. He is married to April, who is a native of Columbus, Ohio and is a freelance artist, writer and blogger and they have a daughter, Cali, who is in the third grade at Lake Park Elementary School in Albany.

FORKLIFT TRAINING

Albany Tech offers a 40 hour refresher course that runs for one week. This includes a day of classroom training (i.e.

Federal D.O.T. regulations and Hours of Service requirements), 2 days on the skills field, and 2 days of on-road driving.

Cost: $450 enrollment

Forklift Certification

Students demonstrate skill, safety and efficiency in operating a sit-down, counter-balance forklift. Certification is available to students who qualify.

Cost: $100 Time: 8am - 4pm

VEHICLE CLASSES

Driver’s Education Courses

This course is designed to meet the State’s Joshua Law requirements. The classes consist of 30 hours of classroom instructions and six hours of supervised training. Albany Tech will award a Certificate of Completion.

We also offer One-on-One six hour Driver’s Education for the adult beginner.

Vehicle Escort Certification

Each qualified applicant will be required to complete eight classroom hours of Georgia Department of Transportation Oversize/Overweight Permit Unit’s Escort Vehicle Operator Certification Program offered by the Georgia Technical College System with an examination score of at least 80% to obtain the official certification of the State.

The certification shall be effective for four years from the issue date with an anticipated cost of the course set at $79. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the Georgia Department of Transportation, at no fee, will issue a certificate to each individual comprised of a wallet card to be maintained in the escort vehicle during operation.
