Helena Industries’ Jamell Thompson Credits Albany Tech’s Lean Six Sigma with Career Advancement Cordele Helena Industries’ employee, Jamell Thompson, attributes his being hired at the company to the training he received in the Lean Six Sigma program at Albany Technical College. By putting experience he gained in the military into perspective, the Lean Six Sigma program really taught Thompson how to transfer those skills to the civilian sector. Since completing the program, the one key item he’s been able to do is better communicate with upper level management. “Not everyone is sold on Six Sigma, but since Helena has adopted Lean manufacturing, being Lean certified did give me a common ground when communicating with upper management on possible improvement to processes,” said Thompson. With locations in Iowa, Georgia, Arkansas, and California, Helena Industries’ Cordele
With the multitude of functions at the plant, Thompson said that after meeting with the plant manager, Scott Braswell, and sharing his background, he was told that being Lean Six Sigma certified definitely put him in the position that the company was moving toward.
plant is a key southeast location producing insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. The plant provides liquid flowable milling and suspension process technologies, as well as liquid/solutions formulating and manufacturing, low and high powered emulsification. They also provide warehousing, rail access, bulk storage, retail packaging, with packaging of all sizes, liquids and solids, and repackaging of solids and liquids, from and to any size containers. An ISO 9002 certified plant with onsite utilities, they also provide environmental controls and waste handling.

Commercial Truck Driving & Welding Commercial Truck Drivers and Welders High in Demand The Commercial Truck Driving program at Albany Technical College is an eight-week program covering everything from reading maps to filling out log books. “We teach students how to perform a pre-trip inspection, how to back and maneuver through a skill range of different exercises, and how to shift gears and maneuver on the highways and through traffic,” said Derrek White, Chair for the Commercial Truck Driving program at Albany Tech. At the end of the eight-week class, students are given a state exam administered by a licensed third party examiner. The exam consists of a pre-trip inspection, skill range test, and a driving test. Students passing the exam get an envelope with the test scores to present to the Department of Motor Vehicle to obtain a CDL license. Throughout the duration of the class, several recruiters come to Albany Tech to speak with students about job opportunities. Students have a chance to ask questions and find out more about what companies are offering and what is required. “For this class term, we have had seven recruiters
come speak with the class, including CT, Benny Whitehead, US Express, Crete, Cypress, Averitt and Wiley Sanders,” said White. “All of these recruiters have expressed to me that the students who come from the ATC program are welltrained after the eight-week class. I am in close contact with the recruiters who come to speak with our students and I speak with the students individually to find out which company would be the best fit for each student.” For more information on the Commercial Truck Driving program at Albany Tech, contact Derrek White at 229.430.1732 or email dwhite@ albanytech.edu. The Welding and Joining Technology diploma program at Albany Tech is designed to prepare students for careers in the welding industry. Welding is the most common way of permanently joining metal parts. In the process, heat is applied to metal pieces, melting and fusing them to form a permanent bond. Because of its strength, welding is used in shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing and repair, aerospace applications, and thousands of other manufacturing activities.Welding is also used to join beams in the construction of buildings,
ATC Program Feature
bridges, and other structures and to join pipes in pipelines, powerplants, and refineries. Welders may work in a wide variety of industries, from car racing to manufacturing. The work done in the different industries and the equipment used may vary greatly. The most common and simplest type of welding today is arc welding, which uses electrical currents to create heat and bond metals together, but there are over 100 different processes that a welder can employ. The type of welding used is normally determined by the type of metals being joined and the conditions under which the welding is to take place. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Handbook, 2010-11 Edition, the median wages of welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers were $16.33 an hour in May 2008.The middle 50 percent earned between $13.20 and $19.61.
