specifically Sports Journalists Tom Boswell and Terry Wilson on behalf of a number of contributors for their coverage of the $225,000 Australian Open and events in their region, up against Messenger Community News Sports Editor Rob Greenwood, for his reportage of the Adelaide Endurance in the second edition of the Australian Premier League, APL02. The tireless contribution of Holdfast Bay’s Sandy Wallace and Sunbury’s Bob Carlson as international technical officials, markers and umpires at a range of club, state and national events, including the 2014 Australian Open and 2015 Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea, see them recognised as finalists for the All Sports Travel Official of the Year.

Award finalists and Hall of Fame inductees announced Bowls Australia have today announced 19 of this year’s most deserving lawn bowlers and administrators as finalists in the sport’s night of nights, while also honouring four of the game’s greatest personalities with induction into the national Hall of Fame. The prestigious Hall of Fame and Awards Night, which will be staged at Surfers Paradise’s Mantra Legends on Thursday, October 29, will see 10 of this year’s biggest contributors to the sport of bowls across the country crowned in the categories of international bowler, male bowler, female bowler, under-18 male bowler, under-18 female bowler, coach, official, story, volunteer and Regional Bowls Manager of the year. Finalists for the 2015 Awards Night categories are: • Australian Sports Commission International Bowler of the Year – Aron Sherriff (Ettalong Memorial, NSW), Matthew Flapper (Ocean Grove, VIC), Wayne Reudiger (Grange, SA) • Aero Bowls Male Bowler of the Year – Ryan Bester (Broadbeach, QLD) • Aero Bowls Female Bowler of the Year – Natasha Scott (Raymond Terrace, NSW) • BCiB Under-18 Male Bowler of the Year – Jono Davis (Dubbo, NSW), Jacob Nelson (Wynnum Manly, QLD) • Tourism and Events Queensland Under-18 Female Bowler of the Year – Jamie-Lee Worsnop (St Johns Park, NSW), Ellen Ryan (Cabramatta, NSW) • City Club Volunteer of the Year – John Smith (NSW), Patricia Reely (Helensvale, QLD) • City of Gold Coast Coach of the Year – Bev Dowrick (Bowls ACT), Anthony Hockey (Bowls WA) • Berry Bowling Systems Story of the Year – Tom Boswell and Terry Wilson on behalf of the Gold Coast Bulletin publication and their contributing colleagues (Jack Harbour, Shya Laughlin, Suzanne Simonot and Lucy Ardern), Rob Greenwood (Messenger Community News) • All Sports Travel Official of the Year – Sandy Wallace (Bowls SA), Bob Carlson (Bowls Victoria) • Berry Bowling Systems Regional Bowls Manager of the Year - Mark Casey (South East Queensland), Chris Wallace (Sydney metropolitan) Following the first full year of Bowls Australia’s Aero Bowls Player Ranking System, the recipients of the Aero Bowls Male Bowler of the Year and Female Bowler of the Year categories have already been decided, with Broadbeach’s Ryan Bester and Raymond Terrace’s Natasha Scott confirmed as Australia’s number one male and female bowlers respectively. The annual ranking system period, which was effective from July 1 until the conclusion of the Australian Open on June 25, provided an enhanced points system across the spectrum of events approved as ‘national ranking events’, and gave more weight to higher finishing performances at major tournaments staged around the country, with the winners each receiving a $3,000 prize cheque courtesy of Bowls Australia’s preferred bowls manufacturer, Aero Bowls. Testament to an outstanding year on the international stage, three Australian Jackaroos players have been named as finalists for the Australian Sports Commission International Bowler of the Year accolade, with three-time defending champion Aron Sherriff again recognised, as has Ocean Grove’s Matthew Flapper and Grange’s Wayne Reudiger for their performances on the world stage. In the BCiB Under-18 Male Bowler of the Year award, 14 year-old Jono Davis, from Dubbo, has enjoyed a rapid rise through the sport’s ranks, selected as one of five males in the Australian Under-18 squad after he claimed the 2014 Australian Under-18 Championships boys’ pairs gold and singles silver medals, and will go head to head against Wynnum Manly’s Jacob Nelson, who secured the Australian Under-18 Championships singles golden medallion. It will be just as difficult to split the finalists of the Tourism and Events Queensland Under-18 Female Bowler of the Year gong, with St Johns Parks’ Jamie-Lee Worsnop up against Cabramatta’s Ellen Ryan.

Bowls NSW’s 2014 Volunteer of the Year John Smith and Club Helensvale’s Patricia Reely, who devotes countless hours to the club as an umpire, umpire coordinator and Ladies Games Director over the past nine years, have been selected as the two finals for the City Club Volunteer of the Year award. In the Berry Bowling Systems Regional Bowls Manager of the Year award, South East Queensland’s Mark Casey and Sydney’s Chris Wallace are in contention for the silverware for their contribution to the numerous clubs located in each of their regions. The Hall of Fame component, which was first introduced in 2011, acknowledges the sport’s most deserving past and present bowlers and administrators for their achievements both on and off the green, with new members inducted every two years. Representing the highest level of peer recognition for an individual’s performance and contribution to the sport, the Hall of Fame already boasts 38 members inducted during the inaugural event in 2011 and four members who were bestowed the honour in 2013. The Hall of Fame committee, which comprises of past inductees, two Bowls Australia Board Directors and the rankings administrator, elected to again utilise all four positions available, with Audrey Hefford, Dorothy Roche OAM, Robert (Bob) King and Donald Woolnough OAM confirmed as inductees this year. South Australia’s Hefford, earns a spot in the 1975-199 era as a player, having debuted for Australia in 1983 in Hong Kong at cap number 25, before going on to don the green and gold at four more test series over the next seven years, including two Commonwealth Games campaigns, where she claimed a silver medal in the fours at the 1986 Edinburgh Games and a fourth place finish in the singles at Auckland in 1990. NSW’s Roche became Australia’s oldest gold medal winner when she competed in the women’s fours at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games at the age of 61 years and 10 months, having taken up competitive bowls in 1975 when she was nearly fifty years of age. King, a fellow NSW Blue, began bowling at the age of 21 years, and achieved the honour of representing Australia 19 years later at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games, where he returned with a silver medal from the fours event. Victoria’s Woolnough’s contribution to the sport of bowls spanned numerous decades and across multiple levels, most notably as an Australian and Victorian representative, but also as a Bowls Victoria councillor, delegate and state selector, in addition to being a national selector, umpire and coach. A limited number of tickets for the Hall of Fame and Awards Night on October 29 are available for purchase by the public and bowls fraternity. Tickets are available online here until September 25 for $65 each, and include a three course meal. Bowls Australia congratulate the 19 awards finalists and four Hall of Fame inductees. Hall of Fame inductee background: Audrey Hefford - South Australia, athlete member, 1975-1999 Audrey hails from the small township of Cobdogla in South Australia’s Riverland, but her achievements on and off the green in the sport of bowls cannot be understated. On the international stage, Hefford debuted for Australia in 1983 in Hong Kong at cap number 25, before going on to don the green and gold at four more test series over the next seven years, including two Commonwealth Games campaigns, where she claimed a silver medal in the fours at the 1986 Edinburgh Games and a fourth place finish in the singles at Auckland in 1990, while a gold in the triples at the 1989 Asia Pacific Championships in Fiji also ranks among her highlights.

Worsnop won the 2014 Australian Open under-18 singles event, then later that year made history as the youngest ever winner of the $30,000 Australian Indoor Championships at just 17 years of age and then by virtue of her Indoor win went on to represent the nation at the World Cup, where she earned a bronze, whereas Ryan was also in scantling form during the period, collecting the 2014 Australian Under-18 Championships pairs gold medal and then etching her name alongside the sport’s greats as the blue-ribbon $225,000 Australian Open women’s singles winner earlier this year.

On the national front, Hefford also secured some of the sport’s top gongs, including winning the Golden Nugget, Australian Fours in 1971, and the Master Singles on five occasions between 1973 and 1990.

For the coveted City of Gold Coast Coach of the Year trophy, Bowls ACT’s Bev Dowrick, who has coached the state women’s team for five years and the junior boys and girls teams for fours years, is a finalist alongside Bowls WA’s Anthony Hockey, who has worked in separate roles as the state’s team manager for both the men and women over the past six years.

Off the green, Hefford was recognised in 1985 as the State Country Sportsperson of the Year, in 1990 as South Australia’s Sportswomen of the Year and the Riverland Citizen of the Year, as well as a five-time winner of the Riverland Sportsperson of the Year, and was an inaugural inductee into Bowl SA’s Hall of Fame.

Berry Bowling Systems Story of the Year finalists include the Gold Coast Bulletin publication,

Sadly, Hefford passed away on March 5, 2014 aged 85.

Robert (Bob) King - NSW, athlete member, 1975-1999 Bob began bowling at the age of 21 years, and achieved the honour of representing Australia 19 years later at the 1974 Christchurch Commonwealth Games, where he returned with a silver medal from the fours event. On the national stage, King was successful in winning two major titles; the Australian Pairs in 1985 and the Australian Singles in 1998. During a long and illustrious career in NSW, King amassed a plethora of coveted titles, including the NSW singles five times, in 1979, 1980, 1984, 1993 and 1998, the NSW pairs twice, in 1979 and 1980, the State Champion of Champions singles in 1984 and 1994, and the State Open Pairs in 1978. Bob has enjoyed great success at other high profile events and activities including playing in the blue-ribbon singles position at the 1981 Australia v New Zealand, appearances on the Jack High television program, 30 Prestige Invitational singles titles and six Prestige Invitational pairs gongs. Bob King’s dominance through the seventies, eighties and nineties made him synonymous with the sport, and in 2007 he was one of the four inaugural inductees into the Bows NSW Hall of Fame.

She also enjoyed a long and illustrious career at state level, representing South Australia on more than 200 occasions, and was the state Champion of Champion six times and State singles winner three times.

Donald Woolnough OAM - Victoria, athlete member, 1950-1974 Donald’s contribution to the sport of bowls spanned numerous decades and across multiple levels, most notably as an Australian and Victorian representative, but also as a Bowls Victoria councillor, delegate and state selector, in addition to being a national selector, umpire and coach. Woolnough’s greatest success on the international stage came at the 1976 World Bowls Championships in South Africa, where he guided the pairs to a silver medal and the fours to bronze. He was also a prolific winner at state level, claiming the Victorian Country Fours in 1963, the Pairs in 1965, and accumulated more than 350 games for the Big V. Off the green, Woolnough dedicated countless hours to the sport in his state and country, acting as an RVBA councillor and Victorian selector for 15 years, and club delegate to the association for 20 years, while at a national level, he served as a selector for four years, umpire for 38 years and coached the nation at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games. Woolnough was given life membership to Bowls Victoria (RVBA) in 1998 and was inducted in their Hall of Fame in 2002, he was also recognised for his contribution to the sport in 1995 when he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his service to bowls. Sadly, Woolnough passed away on March 18, 2003.

Ellen Ryan wins Australian Open Singles Title Bowls Cabramatta’s 18 year old Ellen Ryan become the latest in a long list of Team Henselite Australian Open Singles Champions when she took out the 2015 final at Broadbeach BC over Milmerran’s Maree Gibbs. “I actually wasn’t going to enter because it was 2 weeks off school and I’m in year 12 at the moment and I didn’t want to miss that.” said Ellen. “But Lynsey (Clarke) asked me to play with them (Natasha Scott and Rebecca Van Asch) in the fours and I couldn’t turn that down. So I thought I’d just play the fours. But then my friend from NSW, Maddison, wanted me to play pairs with her and kept bugging me till I said ‘yes.’ So once I entered those two I thought I might as well play singles!” “To win it was pretty incredible. It’s the best achievement I have had. It was pretty amazing.”

“Then in the semi-final I had to play Sam Shanahan and that was always going to be a hard too.” “I didn’t think about winning the title at any point, I just kept thinking I just have to get past this one. The final was televised and being her first experience of playing in a televised game, Ellen had to overcome a bout of nerves beforehand. “I was eating breakfast across the road and I saw the camera man with the boom camera and it started freaking me out! Once I got started I got off to a good start so I didn’t notice then so much.” In the final Ellen came up against Queensland’s Maree Gibbs. “I hadn’t played her before so I didn’t know what she was capable of.” she said. But a lack of knowledge of her opponent was no barrier to Ellen who jumped out of the blocks with a 6-0 head start. At 11-1 she had to endure a fightback from Maree who clawed her way back into the game but Ellen remained focussed and finished the job with a 21-10 win.

“My most difficult opponent was the Malaysian, Siti Zalina Ahmed. Just knowing what she had won scared me off,” said Ellen. “I am usually pretty good under pressure, though, so I ignored it and thought to myself ‘I am capable to play the shots.’ Natasha Scott was a big help, she was there and gave me pointers on shots to play.”

“Hopefully this can be a stepping stone and if I keep doing what I’m doing, hopefully get in the national seletors eyes and everything falls into place.” Aaron’s promise as an Australian Junior and now NSW Under 25 representative has long been evident and the young Warilla champion has been supported by Henselite since 2009. He joins Team Henselite’s Ellen Ryan who won the Women’s Singles the previous day, on the long list of Team Henselite Australian Open singles champions.

Following the most significant win so far, Ellen was named in the Australian Jackaroos squad following the event. A huge achievement for the year 12 student who then returned to her home town of Goulborn to finish her studies. “My aim now is to finish school this year. Then next year I might have a gap year,” she said.

Aaron Teys makes it AO Singles Double for Team Henselite

In an Open tournament without seeding you might think an easy run could be possible. But Ellen did it the hard way facing some really stiff opposition throughout such as WA Bowler of the Year, Noelene Abe, former finalist, Samantha Shanahan, and Malaysian superstar and Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist, Siti Zalina Ahmed.

“My heart was beating through my chest at the end there.”

“I used Dreamline XG. They were really good, even when it was a bit windy they held their line well or when I wanted them to turn they did that.”

And hopefully we will be seeing a lot more of this young superstar on the bowls green.

dig deep,” he told Bowls Australia.

Warilla greenkeeper, Aaron Teys recorded an historic victory when he took out the 2015 Australian Open Singles title at Broadbeach Bowls Club in June. Twenty-one year oldAaron became the second youngest man to lift the AO singles trophy after the biggest win of his career over international superstar and Canadian Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Ryan Bester. Using Henselite Dreamline XGs throughout the event, Aaron raced to an 11-6 lead in the final before his seasoned opponent came back to take the lead 13-12. But Aaron was undeterred and steadily strung together 8 shots on the next five ends. Despite a last minute fight back, Aaron was able to hold on to his lead and reach the 21 shots required to secure the trophy. “I was always expecting Ryan to come back, he is a world-class player, so I knew I had to

Henselite Bowlers Sweep 2015 Australian Open Titles With the Australian Open wrapping up for 2015 at Broadbeach BC last month, it was bowlers using Henselite bowls who came out on top across the board. Both the men’s and women’s singles titles were won with Dreamline XGs by Aaron Teys and Ellen Ryan respectively. They were joined by the entire team of Men’s Fours champions including Wayne Ruediger, Scott Thulborn, Nathan Pedersen and Steven Dennis. Carla Odgers secured a Women’s Fours medal with XGs and in both the Pairs disciplines, Noelene Dutton and Sean Baker used Fusions. Two more Team Henselite bowlers, Tiffany Brodie and Nathan Appleton continued the trend in the disability events. This latest swag of titles continues a long history of Australian Open success with the last 4 men’s singles titles and 3 out of the last 5 women’s singles titles won by bowlers with Henselite bowls.

Bowls Club Promotion - Case Study Wiseman Park Wollongong City bowling club is a medium club and has just completed a refurbishment. The club has full club facilities including a first class restaurant/bistro, quiet lounge and a Platinum TAB. NSW State & Australian Representative, Shane Garvey, explains the club’s recent rise in membership numbers and new bowlers.

What Was the problem? With poker machine taxes and new smoking laws we noticed a considerable down turn in trade and profits which affected how much we were able to spend on bowls within our club e.g. tournaments, prize money, uniforms etc.

What Was your solution? My position is Bowls Coordinator at WPWC bowling club and one solution I came up with is Barefoot Bowls or Business House Bowls within our club. The first step was to purchase a couple of hundred sets of coloured bowls. The reason for purchasing these coloured bowls was mainly to attract younger people to our club, as they are the ones with the disposable income. Basically, I wanted to make bowls brighter and louder to attract these younger people. Bright bowls, music played around the greens with young instructors definitely helped with its success.

hoW did you promote it?

I promoted barefoot bowls through my own constructed website (www.barefootbowlsparty.com).

Barefoot bowlers are now able to enjoy the sport using the right size bowls and makes scoring so much easier & fun.

We also designed some bright posters and retractable signs which made it really easy to get things up and moving.

One huge benefit for clubs is our company provides a renting option instead of purchasing them; this definitely assists clubs with their cash flow.

hoW successful Was it?

Another benefit is that our company will every year maintain and clean the coloured bowls at no cost to the club.

The success of barefoot bowls within our club has been overwhelming; basically it has generated enough income for our bowling club to be more self-sufficient and, more importantly, not a burden on the club during these trying times. Because of its success it has now given me the opportunity to approach other clubs that are struggling and help them by promoting Barefoot Bowls Party within their clubs.

What Worked best and What didn’t Work? To be honest it was trial and error on some things but more importantly everything we set out to achieve was only going to benefit the club.

The first thing I did was to structure a business plan, which detailed exactly how we would achieve our goals.

I am lucky to now be able to branch out and take our business into other clubs to help promote and manage their barefoot bowls.

We registered and trademarked our own name (Barefoot Bowls Sports), and designed an eye-catching logo.

Obviously, introducing our own band of coloured barefoot bowls takes barefoot bowling to a whole new level.

18 queensland bowler june 2015 8 BOWLS PLUS NEW SOUTH WALES AUGUST / SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015

This allows clubs to always provide the best equipment for their barefoot bowlers.

What advice Would you give other boWls clubs? My advice to other Bowling clubs that are looking at barefoot bowls to generate income within their club is not to be afraid to ask questions, provide good equipment, and more importantly make sure that your club promotes barefoot bowls as a fun and active sport enjoyed outdoors by all ages.

Norfolk Island: The Ideal Bowlers Holiday

In the final days of the 2015 TAB Triples Tournament on Norfolk Island, the mid-afternoon atmosphere in the Club House is pretty relaxed. On the greens outside the women are battling it out for the lastspots in the Ladies final, but even they are not showing too much stress. Actually that’s not too surprising though, as at the Norfolk Island Bowling Club you’ll find it’s much like this at all their major annual competitions. Indeed, the words most visitors are using to sum up this week are: ‘relaxed, friendly and easy’. One of the visiting bowlers is Robert McNamee, a National coach who together with around 35 others has travelledto Norfolk from Bundaberg in Queensland. As a bowling destination, Robert says “Norfolk Island is different to any other place”. He reckons the small size of the island

every trip coming home with a great catch, such as Kingfish, Silver Trevally, Amberjack and Sweetlip (Red Throat Emperor). The beauty of the Island is infamous with high rising cliffs, green undulating valleys, lush rainforest and brilliant turquoise waters over coral reefs. Equally amazing is its history of convict past (World Heritage listed) and as the final home for the mutineers and Tahitian women of ‘mutiny on the Bounty’ fame. Aside from independently exploring the island, there are many tours and activities on offer including 4WD tours, Glass-Bottom Boats, progressive dinners to island homes, museums, sunset fish frys, swimming and walks. Non-bowling family and friends are certainly kept well entertained. A sign above the bar at the Norfolk Island Bowling Club reads “There are no strangers in this club, just friends you haven’t met.” Whether taking part in one of the club’s scheduled competitions, bringing a group from your club at another time, or coming for a casual bowl while on holiday, a friendly bowling time on Norfolk Island is surely guaranteed.

makes this the perfect holiday as, aside from it being genuinely welcoming and social you spend minimal time in your car. “It’s a real holiday where the bowls are good and the Club makes you welcome”. Bob is also impressed with the state of the green’s crediting Green keeper Jeff Pleger with doing a wonderful job.

Denis, Robert and their group travelled with the Norfolk Island Travel Centre, a locally owned agency and Norfolk Island Bowls Club sponsor who offer special discounts on some accommodation with 1 in 10 bowlers staying free, or for larger groups 1 in 21 bowlers fly free.

The ‘organiser’ of the Bundaberg group is Denis Young from the Elliott Head Bowls Club. Denis, a National umpire says it was easy to organise for the group to travel for the comp and they are comfortably staying in a few different locations, but all are close to the Club.“We come for a holiday and a bit of fun” and also enjoy the company of not only the local bowlers but meeting up with people from all over Australia and New-Zealand and even running into friends they’ve made at other competitions. Being located “in the middle of the ditch” means Norfolk Island uniquely attracts both Aussie and Kiwi bowlers who together with the locals create instant, but of course very friendly, Trans-Tasman battles! The Norfolk Island Bowling Club runs three major tournaments each year and also welcomes Club groups for social comps at any time of the year. Individual bowlers can turn up for a game when on holiday and know they’ll always be welcomed. TAB Triples runs in August each year (12-22 August 2016) with men’s or ladies teams and a minimum of five qualifying rounds. Each February the South Pacific Pairs is an Open comp for men’s, women or mixed pairs (February 21-26 2016). The Club’s longest standing signature event, the Bounty Bowls Tournament runs every May (May 1-8 Open Fours and 8-12 May 2016 Mixed fours).

Many of the bowlers at the TAB Triples this year were finding time to fit in some fishing and golf during the week. Norfolk’s fishing is renowned for

PICTURES OF OZ TAKEN BY A BELGIAN “Before I visited Australia, I had never heard of Uluru! Then I saw a photo of the rock and the stars and decided to try for a shot of Uluru and the full arc of the Milky Way. This image is made up of 25 different shots, a 180 degree panorama with 14mm lens, 2.8 aperture taking 30 seconds: then post-production work in Lightroom and Photoshop, hours of work. I’m very pleased with the end result.”

“This is The Pinnacles in Western Australia. The sunset was breathtaking. It was a full moon night. This day I discovered that on the night of the full moon it rises at exactly the same time as the sun sets. The sunset and moon rising: so exciting!”

“I first visited Uluru in August 2013, but it was raining. So I decided to go back earlier this year for a proper look at the most famous sunrise, sunset and stars in Australia. This is one of the many shots I took.” “Heading up to Darwin after my first visit to Uluru, the sun came out after a rainy week, and it was stunning. I went for a different perspective, waiting for the sun to drop below the clouds: capturing a beautiful sunset.”

“On the way to Cahill’s Lookout, I met a girl living in Katoomba who knew a secret spot. It was stunning. The Blue Mountains is perfect for meditation: great nature, amazing lookouts and rolling valleys.” 14 BOWLS PLUS NEW SOUTH WALES AUGUST / SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015

A Dream

Promotion XXXX Brisbane Gold coach Alex Murtagh will take to the greens this year as a player looking to create APL history The Australian Premier League announcement Queensland has been waiting for; the APL01 champions XXXX Brisbane Gold’s side is announced and changes have been made. The man who oversaw proceedings from the coach’s corner for the first two instalments of APL has been given the call up to represent XXXX Brisbane Gold alongside two highly regarded international bowlers. Alex Murtagh, a Club Pine Rivers local, will step out for a third time representing Brisbane Gold; however this time the former Australian Commonwealth Games Junior representative will put a bowl down during APL03. Murtagh can create history of his own becoming the first person to win the revolutionary APL as both a player and a coach; and many believe that with two international heavy-hitters on Brisbane’s roster, they could be installed early favourites. Teaming up with XXXX Brisbane Gold’s favourite son Kelvin Kerkow and the recently transferred Solargain Perth Suns star and former Northern Ireland international Jeremy Henry, Murtagh will join good company in their quest to get back on top after mixed performances in the opening two APL’s. After claiming the spoils in the inaugural APL, XXXX Brisbane Gold suffered the tortures of a bottom of the table finish in APL02 which has now brought about change for the Club Pine Rivers owned franchise. Murtagh says he is feeling excited about the call up however knows the pressure is on when he steps out as a player for the first time.

Queensland veteran. Murtagh, originally from Bundaberg north of Brisbane, relocated to Club Pine Rivers 12 years ago when the club offered the then teenager a job and a chance to pursue his bowls career in the big city.

“If we happen to replicate 2013 it would go down as a career highlight for me.”

“As a coach it was great to be a part of the victory in the first APL and certainly a memorable moment; however being out there as a player there will certainly be more pressure,” Murtagh said. “Every team’s goal is to make the finals and from there it’s anyone’s game. “If we happen to replicate 2013 it would go down as a career highlight for me.” While Murtagh has never teamed up with Jeremy Henry he has plenty of experiences playing against him and probably more teaming up with Commonwealth Games singles gold medallist Kelvin Kerkow; Murtagh spent most of his state representative career playing alongside the

Now 12 year’s down the track, Murtagh gets the opportunity to repay Club Pine Rivers with a winning performance for the XXXX Brisbane Gold in the much anticipated APL03.

Whilst the banter between coach and players was a trademark of the XXXX Brisbane Gold’s APL campaign with Murtagh at the helm; newly appointed coach Robbie Wild will know what is required after representing the franchise in the opening two APL’s; Wild will be sure to offer close friend Murtagh and his team mates some friendly pointers when he calls his first meeting in charge! XXXX Brisbane Gold will be entertaining both on and off the green, and with the support coming from the world famous ‘Wayne’s Can Bar’, 2015 could be another great year for the team in maroon. For more information on the APL visit www.australianpremierleague.com. au Hope to see you at Club Pine Rivers from November 10-13; however if you can’t make it be sure to tune into Fox Sports from 5:30pm each night during the event.

for his franchise in APL03 as their only member to play in all three APL’s at Club Pine Rivers. Adams experience stretches far beyond his APL appearances having had a long and successful career that has seen him wear the green and gold in a development series against New Zealand in 2013 and represent Western Australia for the best part of for 14 years, playing over 180 games for the Sandgropers.

Latest News from Bowls Australia

Solargain Perth Suns have named an all Western Australian line-up for APL03 announcing state skipper Matt Ellul to make his debut

With three of Western Australia’s best skips named in their side, Coach Wayne Turley will have the tough job of selecting their positions and substitute options; however as a Commonwealth Games gold medallist in his own right and having coached the Perth Suns to consecutive semi-final appearances in APL01 and APL02, Turley will no doubt get the best out of his team once more.

The Solargain Perth Suns have changed their tactics going into APL03 naming a home grown Western Australian side for their third crack at claiming the spoils in the $110,000 Australian Premier League. After last year’s semi-final performance, Solargain Perth Suns have been forced to make changes to their line-up after their international star Jeremy Henry announced he will be joining rival team the XXXX Brisbane Gold who finished last in APL02.

The third instalment of the Australian Premier League will be held at Club Pine Rivers from November 10-13 and can be watched live on Fox Sports. Get behind your team for APL03; it’s going to be the best yet!

Choosing to look no further than the west to form their 2015 line-up, Perth Suns will join a number of competing franchises who opt to select home grown talent when forming their formidable APL teams. Matt Ellul will count down the days to APL03 after receiving the unexpected call up to compete in what will be the biggest event in his short career. Bowls WA CEO Ken Pride says Matt is a naturally talented player who has a great shot making ability and will embrace the APL environment. “The hype and crowd involvement will suit Matt down to the ground and I predict him to be one of the finds of APL03 – certainly we are looking to make our first final and the team has been selected to achieve just that,” Mr Pride said. Ellul, a member of one of Perth’s powerhouse clubs Manning Memorial, has been Western Australia’s leading skip for the past two years after strong performances for his state at South Burnie in Tasmania and most recently at WA’s home Australian Sides Championships played at Yokine Districts. Ellul will be joined by the joint Rosenthal Medal winners Clive Adams and Tom Mitchell who will be hoping to improve upon Perth Suns back-toback semi-final loses in the first two instalments of the revolutionary APL. Ellul says he is looking forward to the APL and competing alongside players of whom he has formed friendships with during his time representing WA. “I’m looking forward to a great challenge with great mates,” said the highly motivated Ellul. “The Solargain Perth Suns are confident in performing strongly against quality opposition come November.” Solargain Perth Suns stalwart Clive Adams will once again lead the way NEW SOUTH WALES BOWLS PLUS AUGUST / SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015 17

Murray Steamers recruit Safuan Said Former Malaysian international Safuan Said set to make his APL debut for the Murray Steamers

1 and APL02’s MVP, however Safuan Said brings with him enormous experience on the world stage and in big games; we are really excited to have him in the team, he is a great addition and I know he is really looking forward to the opportunity,” said a confident coach Mikin-Laurie.

Aiming to be the first Australian Premier League side to go back-to-back in the revolutionary event, the Murray Steamers have been forced to fill the shoes of arguably the world’s best bowler, Alex Marshall MBE for the third instalment of APL.

“Ryan Bester has been performing better than anyone else in the country since APL02 and Michael Walker continues his local form and is itching to get back to Club Pine Rivers; so I’m expecting a strong performance from the Steamers once again.

In the most competitive environment the Murray Steamers have opted for another international superstar to join their franchise and get them into the winners circle once more, when they step out onto the biggest stage with a target on their back as the defending champions. Malaysian great Safuan Said has the momentous task of filling the flying’ Scotsman’s shoes when he steps out for the Murray Steamers in the $110,000 event this November and couldn’t be happier to take part in the revolutionary tournament. “I’m super excited to join the Murray Steamers in the APL and I know it will be great to compete alongside Ryan Bester and Michael Walker in such a unique format,” said the former world singles champion. “I’m enjoying every moment playing bowls down under and as most people say, the best place in the world to play bowls is here in Australia.” Said will be playing Melbourne Premier League at MCC Kew Sports for the second year in a row prior to stepping out for the Murray Steamers. Whilst Said hasn’t played internationally for over three years, his team mate Ryan Bester, a Canadian representative, has been in the best form of his life finishing top of the Aero Bowls National Rankings less than a year after winning silver at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. People will be questioning whether the Murray Steamers can win consecutive APL titles without Alex Marshall; however their coach Zane Mikin Laurie, the Sports Administrator at Moama Bowling Club has full confidence in the team selected for APL03. “Obviously we are missing the world number

“Back home I know Echuca-Moama and the whole Murray region really got behind the Steamers last year and being the only regional side in the competition we look forward to giving everyone across Northern Victoria and Southern NSW a strong exciting team to cheer on.”

Once again Murray Steamers team mates Ryan Bester and Michael Walker will team up in the prestigious Moama Men’s Pairs as a strong warm event prior to the APL; however they will meet tough competition from their new recruit Said, who will also be using the Moama Prestige Pairs as a practice event leading into his APL debut. The Murray Steamers are expecting a good band of spectators to make the trip from Moama to Club Pine Rivers to cheer on their team whilst plenty of support from Bester’s home club Broadbeach on the Gold Coast will jump on board the Steamers once again. The competition is expected to be tougher than ever this year and the Murray Steamers have said they will keep their eyes on XXXX Brisbane Gold as the team to beat, with all the local support, especially from Wayne’s Can Bar, and the inclusion of international star Jeremy Henry, they are already shaping up like a winning combination. XXXX Brisbane Gold will make their team’s announcement next week; who will join Jeremy Henry and Kelvin Kerkow for the local side in APL03? JUST BOWLS – Where did it begin? It all started back in February this year, when Russell was at a loose end after several years of committee involvement with the Mooloolaba Bowls club, including President of the Men’s Section and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Management.

The Bowls Doctor to take a Break!

Over a cup of coffee with partner Dell and reading the bowls result in the Tuesday edition of the Sunshine Coast Daily newspaper, it occurred to them that media coverage of bowls on the Sunshine Coast was quite limited. In fact sometimes it was hit and miss if club results made it to the paper because for the press - it was all about available space.

Sadly for the local bowling fraternity this is not so! Barry told me in a chat we had on Wednesday that he will be closing his business at the end of June and taking a forced break.

About the same time Russell was thinking of doing a computer programming course which led him to do some research on the internet. During this research he came across the option of “creating his own website.” After some time was spent looking into the mire of sites available both in Australia and oversees Russell and Dell choose - Simple site! As the name implies, it is very user friendly backed up by tremendous technical support from the site administrator. Getting started required a fair amount of patience but after working their way through the programme options, things started to fall into place. The next challenge was to spread the word amongst Sunshine Coast Bowls Clubs and bowlers generally. Emails were sent to all local clubs, the Men’s and Ladies District Associations, to all State Bodies and across the ditch to New Zealand. Personal visits were made to a number of local clubs where the opportunity was taken to enjoy a cold beer and local hospitality. The Website was launched in early April and at the end of July the site had received over 15,500 visits. Over the moon with that result – says Russell. Russell told Bowls Plus that the site is committed to reporting lawn bowls news on the Sunny Coast in Queensland. The aim is to cover, club results, people stories, events and tournaments, plus much more, with the site being updated as information comes to hand 24 -7. You can visit JUST BOWLS! @ www.justbowls. info Good Bowling to all, Jack high – Editor.

The rumours around town lately were - that Barry Cox was ready to hang up his well-worn; country travelling Boots – to concentrate on his work as a Licensed Bowls Tester.

The forced break has come about because the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, has issued Barry with a notice claiming his business premises located on Nicklin Way Kawana, do not conform to Council zoning requirements. This a huge blow for all bowlers, especially when Barry has the only Testing Table on the Sunshine Coast and is the only independent Licensed Lawn Bowls Tester, in Queensland. He told me that during his break he intends to consult with the Council to hopefully resolve the concerns they have with his operation. Let’s hope there is a good outcome from these discussions and that we see the Bowls Doctor back in business - sooner rather than later! It is rather ironic but after many years as a Licensed Tester Barry undertook his first test following a challenge to bowls during a recent tournament. Good News though, the challenge failed as all 4 bowls satisfied the testing process. Naturally the owner of the bowls is relieved and will continue to use his set of favourite Aero Dynamics.

Brother and Sister Act! Joel Anderson takes out the Club Kawana Men’s Singles title and is joined by his sister Kiani, who claimed the Ladies Singles title at the club. BUT wait- there is more: The Brother and Sister then go on to win their respective District Champion of Champion titles. Has this created history? We think so! 50 YEARS MEMBERSHIP! Not many Club Members can claim they have been a member of the same club for 50 years! Stan Butner of the Yandina Bowls club, has reached the 50 year milestone and will be honoured with a special Tribute Day on Sunday 12 July 2015 at is beloved club – Yandina Bowls Club. In a chat with one of Stan’s long time club mates - known only as BDQ (Real Name??) - He told me a little bit about this gentleman of the club. Unfortunately he has now retired from the game but not before winning club Singles, Pairs, Triples, fours and pennant titles many times over. Stan is keeping his age quiet, but his mate thinks he is in his late eighties. For most of his working life Stan drove the Sugar Mill Trains that operated out of the Nambour Sugar Mill – is now just a memory! Stan still lives in Nambour – the once sleepy town that has burst into life in recent years. Club Games Director Joe, is happy with the entries so far, but would like more to ensure a big turnout for this Special - MENS FOURS STAN BUTNER TRIBUTE DAY. NEW SOUTH WALES BOWLS PLUS AUGUST / SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015 21

Thevator Inno

Barry Hamer

Over that long period of time playing lawn bowls at top levels, studying and preparing material for my innovation columns, one must reasonably expect that such ongoing exposure has enabled me to appreciate the pros and cons of our game especially for the subject that I will feature this month. During my engagement at the Sydney 2000 ] Olympics I observed the amazing number of devices used by the Para Olympians, so that associated with the application of sports psychology and related coaching methods has allowed me to respond more clearly on various arguments regarding such devices. Prior to significant technological changes taking place for say lawn bowlers, golfers, and tennis players not so long ago, most of those competing players had to rely on local coaches, books and keeping fit to develop their technical skills. Modern coaching today involves much more than just players fitness, but rather the application of a broad range of sophisticated methods, equipment and technology often discovered chatting with coaches, champions and googling. As status and money has become the significant drive to reach higher levels, the combination of sports science driven by various Institutions of sport to optomise performance of the sports they deal with, often involves the use of mechanical devices referred to above. While a range of devices has allowed lawn bowlers having varying degrees of disabilities to participate socially in their clubs, the concern right now is that while such devices are being branded as unfair by a significant number of disgruntled bowlers, analysis by the Institute of sport specialists or other relevant bodies may well be the fairest way to judge and deal this matter. As the Olympic Games Administrations created a comprehensive and approved scale of games and devices directly relating to the varying degrees of disability to compete seriously under such circumstances, perhaps that may be worth exploring too? Having witnessed the special rules and methods applied during the Sydney Olympics for Paralympic sports including the visually impaired, a real opportunity to create an appropriate category for lawn bowls is feasible? So in order to prove that, the bad news is that the current devices appear to be performing too well steading up and controlling any wayward motion of the pendulum in motion during the delivery, and that’s the critical issue needing further professional analysis! Well having said that I decided to test the devices to see what all the fuss is about, and it didn’t take long to discover why these brilliantly designed and manufactured aids are branded as *unfair by some disgruntled bowlers. In order to challenge that

50 Years Playing 42 Years Innovating *statement I systematically tested the devices above on synthetic and well groomed grass surfaces under varying weather conditions, and now understand why numbers of bowlers playing in competition have complained about the use of such wonderful devices, therefore I list some of my practical findings for further investigation to put this whole matter to bed once and for all. Disclosure: *I have no commercial or other interest whatsoever in the devices tested and commented on below! Conducting a number of tests successfully drawing shots was successful. On-shots proved to be more stable, and consistent. Removing bowls holding shots in the head became regular and effective due to the very stable grip and *release mechanism of the artificial arm. That is, modification to the hand of the device locking the bowl securely into the hand grip was brilliant avoiding any wrist and finger movements at the point of delivery could be classified as an advantage. Reducing the amount of body movements coordinating the step, pendulum, transfer of weight normally delivering a bowl accurately was significant. Drawing around or inside blocking bowls required much more practice. Perfect playing on wet rinks by not having to use a towel to dry bowls. Note: All bowls performed well delivering from the arm due to the mechanical arm’s stability and trajectory of the pendulum not entirely possible with a bare armed delivery controlled by a player’s brain! Any mechanical device that has the capacity to simplify, and stabilise the normal delivery motion of the bowler’s arms, legs, hands and body to overcome or nullify the effect of nervousness or faulty technique must surely demand critical analysis? Coaching manuals graphically illustrate the sequence and coordination of the stance, grip, step and delivery and coaches train bowlers to effectively carry However the use of the “bowling arm” significantly changes the biometrics of the delivery from the commencement of the delivery through to its completion involving are a number of psychological elements causing the “yips” during any part of that delivery process. This problem is not unique to lawn bowls, in fact the most recent banning of the broomstick putter for golf acknowledges that such devices do minimise the dreaded “yips”. There are other ways to deal with such problems under pressure that has been covered in previous innovation columns featuring self-hypnosis, a potent tool used in high profile sports to achieve key objectives. I have personally engaged self-hypnosis successfully in competition, also for squash tennis and lawn bowls teams and sides.

22 BOWLS PLUS NEW SOUTH WALES AUGUST / SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER 2015

Well informed administrators need to seriously take into account the above before approving the use of any enhancing devices further for open competitions, however such devices well applied will indeed attract much needed membership? I believe that the integrity of lawn bowls overall must be paramount therefore potential bowlers whether they be high achievers, handicapped, or too shy to join and enjoy our great game at a bowling club needs very serious appraisal? The Innovator, “Retreaded and pumped up” Barry Hamer

Club pennant competition planning Taking a lead in steering your bowls club/ association. Whilst at the AO in the gold coast recently I was approached nigh on daily to respond to the regular query as to how to get our club, the players, to commit to win the pennant competition. And now upon my return I have ventured to a handful of clubs in response to that very same issue which arises as Victorian clubs prepare for their prolonged pennant season. I find the solution to their issue quite easy. The board or committee is voted in by the members. The board/committee set down the collective competition objective for the club. Then they appoint selectors who will set criteria and choose players to meet that club objective. And the board/committee will appoint a coach to develop the skills of players to perform in competition. All good. However the people I met these recent times could not spell out what each group’s (committee, selectors, coach, players) responsibilities entail. Here is where my advice is sought and so here is an expanded statement on the various roles and responsibilities. 1 Role & responsibility of the CLUB COMMITTEE • Set out pennant season competition objectives / goal for what we would expect to achieve for all the club sides with emphasis on the top (two) sides; examples may be Gain finals berth for each of the top two sides promotion of 50% of teams into the higher pennant level no club side to be relegated • Reinforce idea that Saturday pennant and our top two sides are our ‘flagship’ sides • Have the Club members made aware of the club committee objectives • Expect the Selection committee to make decisions to reinforce the club objectives • Select, appoint, even recruit, the right members as selectors for the top sides rather than conduct an election for the role • Head coach appointed and all coaches to contribute to pennant practice • club leaders, everyone is a potential leader in the club (team)

• ensure the decisions are for the club good rather than the individual need

division next season To achieve this each one of us must do our best within the team by the following set agreed team goals for example Agree on how many games to win in season Agree to win 8/9 home games win more ends per game than our opponents have at least 2 rinks win each week set agreed team plans such as have all players strive to score a 5/10 rating on each game debrief score sheet our front end team (lead & 2nd) have 2/4 bowls in the head 15/21 ends as a minimum per game set agreed objectives, roles for each position in a team identify at least one person per rink, ideally half the members of the side, as morale lifters operating for the side acknowledge establishment of a leadership group by the club for the teams

seasons Selectors have a role in reviewing performances from the previous season. This would entail each player, the teams, the finalist clubs in our relevant pennant division. Additionally the selectors could refer to factors affecting our forthcoming season• Club Leadership, i.e. those with office bearer roles, selectors and those assigned by others, e.g Skips in a side. • Recruitment for top sides and expectations they have/ club has • Fostering new blood • Player performances- measured statistically, Debrief paper, • Player motivation –by member attendances at training; prospects of every player, fair treatment in selection

5 as a PLAYING MEMBER in the top team aim to To be a member of that team, I agree I need to commit my contribution by • Commit to train with team members Tuesdays 5.30-6.30pm • commit to train with rink members Thursdays 5.30-6.30pm • know, accept and succeed in the agreed role of the position in which I am selected • commitment to team game plan goals • Abide by a commitment to contribute to player meetings, • Abide by a commitment to season planning, • Agree to not arrange club games that clash with team training, Tues / Thurs • Make a commitment to game plans, and openly discuss, agree, apply and review • Abide by a commitment to game debrief performance review, • based on game plan, statistical analysis, skip input, coach observation, selectors • preparedness to train more diligently the following week(s) when my previous game • performance rating score was <5 • Be prepared to improve my skills under supervised coaching to contribute to the team • Show by example I am part of the ‘win’ team mindset prepared to work for success • Don’t be passive as passive members more often are ‘passengers’

How do we get to that the NEXT level of performance? Simple, by having measurable objectives for each player, each rink in the top two sides. And training to acquire that higher level of skill. AND, by rewarding those taking on their responsibilities and commitments, AND, not rewarding those shirking or flouting their responsibilities. Which (rewards and omissions) can all be in the hands of the selectors.

• 2 Role & responsibility of SELECTORS • to make decisions that reinforce the club objectives • set and disseminate selection guidelines/ criteria to include a reference to compulsory training attendance • choose the best performed players in the top side • require compulsory attendance at head coach supervised training every Tuesday & Thursday • require rink team debrief post match • Require pennant Performance Reports based on game plans and player ratings • communications to pennant bowlers via email; noticeboard; pennant competition planning • season planning, specifically ensuring no club games are permitted to be organised beyond 5pm on Tues/ Thurs for the club pennant players • recruitment of young keen bowlers • require compliance from all players on post match performance report scoring • commitment to formal progress review of top team after every 5 rounds of pennant • form a leadership group for top two sides as a start • leadership group responsible for – culture, standards, communications & team selection, team plan, skills training plus recruitment, invitees into squad • leadership group maybe 6 people – 2 team captains, coach, 2 skips, a selector • Preparation – Pre Season • Pre Season plans shared with top team as from August EXAMPLE a half day session and September have 4 Saturdays pre pennant season with a full day program of game / training, • review performance facts and stats. about all the players from the previous season • review performance facts and stats. about each of the teams from the previous season • review performance facts and stats. about the finalists in the relevant pennant divisions from the previous season • the holding of informal meetings with, selectors, current players, targeted recruits • don’t pander to personalities, remember it is all about the club collectively • do be seen as firm and fair in encouraging the club approach

• • • • •

3 role and responsibility of HEAD COACH • conduct supervised pennant training every Tuesday & Thursday 5.30-6.30.pm • conduct game review for the top two sides • includes being formal advisor to weekly Selection panel meeting • includes being a tactical advisor/ trainer to top teams & skips as requested, • Coordinate the tasks of fellow club coaches • Coordinate availability of coaches for the players unable to always attend the compulsory pennant training • bowlers - identification of skills of the pool of club players • Winter training program (July & August)

The BUS Concept I want to look at the DESTINATION (of the club) written on the front of the bus so as to ensure I am jumping aboard a bus being taken in the right direction. And before I jump on the bus I want it to appear contemporary and be well resourced (fuelled for energy). Then where I am willing to be on the BUS, for me as a coach, the bus driver, or you as a player in that team, or a selector, or a club committee member, I ask myself let’s get the right people on the bus get the wrong people off the bus get the right people in their right positions let the passengers off where they do the least damage. Take the role, take the responsibility Do we have the right people on the bus in all capacities. If not is the leadership able or willing to pursue the recruitment of the right people connected to all aspects of club success as set by our committee?

4 Aim of the club TOP TEAM • Win the pennant final for promotion into a higher

6 FACTS & STATS. Observations on Pennant performance previous

Known history for pennant finals success. Selectors can determine from pennant records what pennant result information is valid to use as a tool for evaluating performance next season. For example facts from Division One pennant here in Melbourne from a previous season: • •

There are four sections for Division one The best winner of the four sections won all 17 pennant games, amassing 278 points • The average for the four winners was 15 wins from 17 games, accumulating 250 points • So a club to win their section premiership this season has to set sail for 15 wins • If a goal is to be in the final four of the section, then information on the fourth placed teams last season is the guide • The best record of a fourth placed club was 10 wins, a draw, 6 losses and 177 points • The average of the fourth placed clubs in sections was 10 wins, 7 losses, with 169 points • If the goal of a club is to finish midfield, or about 6th, the average sixth placed team had 8 wins, 9 losses and gained 147 points • The club also has to be aware of the positions that force you to be relegated, which is second last and last and the limit or measure of those positions the average of 2nd last placed teams was 3 wins, 14 losses gaining only 96 points. • Winning division two final with players performing at a 38% effective bowls rate • Winning whenever the front end had 2/4 bowls in the head 15/21 ends • Winning whenever both front end players made an effective bowl contribution at least 13/21 ends each Does your club leadership, your bowls association, go to this level of responsibility? MAROON ARM BOWLERS

BROADBEACH ARM BOWLERS TOURNAMENT

Twenty teams of Arm Bowlers competed in the 3 Game Pairs Medley at Broadbeach Bulls Bowls Club on Wednesday the 8th of July 2015. Teams from the Gold Coast were joined by teams from the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and the Ipswich-Toowoomba area. Two holidaying arm bowlers from Victoria, Barry Anset and Phil Gude (members of the Victorian Arm Bowlers squad) entered as a team and took home the major prize. The format proved popular and will be the basis for future Arm Bowlers events. FORMING OF A COMMITTEE At the conclusion of the Arm Bowler’s Event at Broadbeach Bulls Bowls Club, the arm bowlers discussed the need to create an organisation in known as the Maroon Arm Bowlers. COACHING FOR ARM BOWLERS The use of an artificial devise to bowl is keeping bowlers (who would otherwise be forced into retirement) on the greens. Bowlers who lost form because of physical restrictions are finding they can play again at a level similar to how they played before their decline in health. New arm bowlers need coaching to relearn the art of lawn bowls while the more experienced arm bowlers struggle to find a suitable qualified coach to correct minor technical defects. To assist arm bowlers of all levels, Bill Cornehls, the High Performance Coach from Bowls Queensland, will hold an Arm Bowlers Coaching Day at Broadbeach Bulls Bowls Club on Wednesday the 16th of September commencing at 10:00am. There will be two hours of coaching in the morning followed by a BBQ lunch and the opportunity to participate in a game of social bowls or additional coaching in the afternoon. Cost for the day is $10 to cover green fees, lunch and coaching expenses. Preregistration will en-

Queensland to co-ordinate and promote events for arm Bowlers. It was apparent that the majority of arm bowlers present supported forming an Arm Bowlers Association in Queensland and a number volunteered to be part of an inaugural committee. The first committee meeting was held on 15th of July 2015 and agreed to a number of resolutions. NAMING OF THE ARM BOWLERS ASSOCIATION Various options were considered but the general feeling was that the name needed to reflect the whole of Queensland and not exclude Arm Bowlers from outside a demographic area. When the name “Maroon Arm Bowlers” was suggested it was instantly accepted by all present. Henceforth the arm bowlers association shall be sure there is ample food and tailored coaching drills. Expressions of Interest to be emailed to the Maroon Arm Bowlers ARM BOWLING EVENTS Musgrave Hills Bowls Club is sponsoring an Arm Bowlers Pairs Medley at Musgrave Hill on Friday the 23rd of October, commencing at 9:00am. The morning event will conclude with a BBQ lunch. Team or single entries are welcome and entries can be emailed to the Maroon Arm Bowlers. A flyer is available on request. REGISTER OF ARM BOWLERS Privacy restrictions prevent Bowls Queensland from releasing personal details of bowlers issued with a card authorising the use of an artificial device (bowling arm). Consequently a data bank of Arm Bowlers is being created by the Maroon Arm Bowlers. Arm Bowlers on the Register with an email address will receive a copy of the Maroon Arm Bowlers Newsletter and brochures promoting Arm Bowling Events. To receive a registration form, please email your request to the Maroon Arm Bowlers

INTERSTATE CHALLENGE Similar Arm Bowling Groups are active in NSW, Victoria and SA. Teams of 18 (16 and 2 reserves) from each state compete against each other during the second week of September each year. The 2015 Interstate Challenge is being held in SA this year and it is Victoria’s turn to host the Interstate Challenge in 2016. There is currently an offer on the table from Victoria for Queensland to host and compete in 2016 events. The Maroon Arm Bowlers have indicated to Victoria that they are able to host the Interstate Challenge and field a competitive team. It is expected Victoria will ratify the change of venue to Queensland at their next committee meeting. Over the next 12 months Arm Bowlers competing at Arm Bowlers Events will be assessed and those interested arm bowlers with the ability/potential to be part of a Maroon Arm Bowlers Interstate Challenge Squad will be invited to try out for the team. The formality of this process is still to be finalised. Meanwhile Arm Bowlers interested in being part of the Maroon Arm Bowlers Interstate Squad are invited to provide express their interest to the Maroon Arm Bowlers.

DORRIGO BOWLS CLUB

We are so used to playing at and visiting bowls clubs that are affiliated with BA but there is a club that sits in a district with scenery to die for, with friendly townsfolk to mingle with, with bowlers eager to play, with a green in enjoyable condition and is not affiliated. We are talking about Dorrigo Bowls Club. Dorrigo is on the escarpment of the Dorrigo Plateau overlooking the coastal plain towards Coffs Harbour. With Dorrigo World Heritage National Park, the first World Heritage National Park in Australia, with full flowing high waterfalls, some only 1 km from town, this would be the town and bowls club to visit not just for a day but stay and enjoy. Dorrigo Bowls Club had some difficulty with falling membership and dwindling finances resulting in the loss of affiliation but retention of eager and loyal membership. Having freehold the club has disposed of some infrastructure and associated land but retained title of the green and space for a club house. Currently a development application is being assessed by the local council for the construction of a new club house and car parking facility. In the meantime the club has access to the old club room facilities for larger bowls associated functions. Of course the intention is to regain affiliation in the future. Bowls is conducted on Saturday afternoons with Friday twilight games during daylight saving times. Very very social is the theme of all games but serious play is not forgotten. There are 30 members for a good game with any visitors. Maybe a group of bowlers would like to visit and enjoy the play and scenery over a few days. The President, Neville Beaumont, would be pleased to be contacted by any potential visitor bowlers at nev@beaumontproduce.com.au or 0427 572 445 after hours.

Big guns line-up for Hawks in APL03 The Gold Coast Hawks are the latest franchise to announce their line-up for APL03

line-up for the Hawks once more after narrowly missing finals in the Gold Coast Hawks inaugural appearance APL02. HUTT & NAE NAE HELD ATinLOWER

Gold Coast Hawks are set to soar to new heights in APL03 when three of Australia’s best bowlers join forces in the third installment of the revolutionary Australian Premier League.

Gold Coast Hawks are a powerhouse line-up with three Australian Jack16 -27medals February 2015 aroos, numerous Commonwealth Games between them, over three decades experience playing together at Club Helensvale and more tournament victories together than any other team in the APL.

Earlier in the year, Helensvale’s Mark Casey announced he will be returning home to the Gold Coast franchise after two years representing XXXX Brisbane Gold. Whilst one of last year’s players were unfortunately going to miss out due to Casey’s homecoming, the impending arrival of Lynsey Clarke’s baby, expected just weeks before APL03, has consequently made the Australian Captain unavailable and the decision as to who will join Casey far easier. Helensvale’s own Australian Jackaroos Brett Wilkie and Nathan Rice will

BOWLING CLUBS, NEW ZEALAND

Whilst all the talk is around defending champions the Murray Steamers and XXXX Brisbane Gold who have picked up former Solargain Perth Suns star Jeremy Henry, the Gold Coast Hawks will be a highly fancied side. Rice is thrilled to have another opportunity to play in the prestigious APL alongside two good mates, a highly compatible team he expects to go well this year. “Every time I suit up for Helensvale I believe we are going to win,” a confident Rice said. “I’m looking forward to getting back to Club Pine Rivers and playing in front of big crowds with the great atmosphere that the APL creates.” The Gold Coast Hawks are the only team in APL history to have all three players and coach as members of the same club; the well-known elite bowling club on the Gold Coast, Club Helensvale. Anthony Fantini, a former Queensland representative and Australian ‘A’ squad member will once again lead the charge for the Hawks from the sidelines. The excitement around the APL is heating up with just over three months left before all the best players from around the globe descend on Club Pine Rivers for the $110,000 event. For those that can’t make it to Club Pine Rivers between November 10 and 13; Fox Sports will telecast live matches from 5:30pm AEST each night.

Twist to debut for BCiB Sydney Lions

real force in APL03.

Ben Twist will line-up for the BCiB Sydney Lions in APL03 alongside two of the greats of the game

“Becoming an APL champion would mean a lot; when you first start bowling an event of this large scale is what you dream of playing in and winning; I couldn’t think of anything better than to take out this year’s prestigious APL.”

BCiB Sydney Lions are gearing up for their third APL appearance, and having yet to make the APL finals, could 2015 be the year of the lion? Sydney’s line-up for the third instalment of APL is star studded having today announced the recruitment of New South Wales sensation Ben Twist to join three time International Bowler of the Year Aron Sherriff and former world champion Steve Glasson OAM. Twist will be a welcomed edition to the Sydney Lions with the 25 year old having already established himself as a highly regarded international bowler who has represented Australia in World Junior Championships winning gold in the mixed pairs and just last year claimed the Merdeka International singles title in Malaysia. Twist, a member of one of Sydney’s powerhouse bowling club St Johns Park, formerly a Queenslander, is no stranger to the indoor surface having competed in PBA events in England and winning the U’25 indoor singles title back in 2011.

Twist’s team mates have done it tough in the first two instalments of APL having finished 6th twice and will be just as determined to be the last team standing at the end of four days of tough competition. BCiB Sydney Lions and National Assistant Coach Gary Willis will once again lead his charge at Club Pine Rivers and is confident in the team that has been selected and thrilled to have Twist on board. “Unfortunately we have lost Karen Murphy due to International duties at the Hong Kong Classic; but we (Sydney Lions) are all very determined to turn our fortunes around at this year’s APL,” Coach Willis said. “Ben Twist is a fantastic inclusion to the Lions squad; he is a highly credentialed fast green player which will suit the Pine Rivers surface.

Twist says he is very excited to be debuting for his home cities franchise, BCiB Sydney Lions in an event he has hoped to be part of since its inception.

“Ben is very keen and excited at the prospect of making his debut at the 2015 APL, a great person, fantastic player and we at the Sydney Lions are extremely happy to have him on board.”

“After watching and thoroughly enjoying the first two instalments from home it’s made me hungrier to line-up alongside some of the games greats,” Twist declared.

Glasson, Sherriff and Twist look very strong on paper and will certainly be backed by many as strong contenders in this year’s competition.

“I’ve played a fair bit with Aron and Steve previously, so I’m hoping we can work on our already solid combinations and become a

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra joins the circus with Cirque de la Symphonie Following their highly acclaimed debut with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in 2013, Cirque de la Symphonie will be reuniting with the SSO next month to perform three shows filled with dazzling magic, captivating beauty and death-defying cirque artistry.

“It really is like circus ballet,”

‘Love Desire and Riches: the Fashion of Weddings’, is the latest exhibition to be run by the National Trust of Australia (NSW). Held in the stunning UNESCO World Heritage listed Old Government House in Parramatta Sydney, this building provides a richly layered context for the exhibition’s themes. Serendipitously in contemporary times Old Government House has itself become a hugely popular wedding venue. With a fusion of old and new, the exhibition covers over 200 years of wedding gowns, from historic garments from the early 19th century onward, iconic pieces from Australian film and television, as well as celebrity gowns and haute couture from modern Australian designers.

“It really is like circus ballet,” Noble says. “Witnessing the sound of a full symphony orchestra paired with the

Wedding fashion is examined as a symbol of romantic love, cultural etiquette and community celebration using gowns from the archives of the National Trust collections of Victoria and NSW. Some rare and beautiful pieces from the NSW textile collection have only recently been unearthed and are on display for the first time, along with some of the more unique pieces, such as a fine muslin gown worn by Anna King, wife to Governor Phillip King which dates from 1806, as well as what is thought to be the oldest wedding dress in Australia, dating from 1800. “Who do you love, what do you desire, how do you want to make your life richer?” These themes will be considered throughout 14 rooms of Old Government House as the key elements defining this exhibition are explored. The red satin gown embodying desire, worn by Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge! contrast against the frivolity of the peach silk wedding dress worn by Carey Mulligan in Baz Luhrmann’s recent adaptation of The Great Gatsby, as purity and love, duty and desire are all woven together into the tapestry that is a wedding. Love Desire & Riches juxtaposes modern day glitz and glamour against the exquisite simplicity of 19 century cut and design. The exhibition is open Tuesday to Sunday until 1 November. A number of public programs are also running in conjunction with the exhibition so be sure to check our website for a range of classes in wedding ephemera, textile craft and curator talks and tours. CALCIUM-CHARGED RECIPES The foodies from The Dairy Kitchen have created a collection of inspirational, calcium-packed recipes designed to help Australians meet their daily dairy requirements - something that can be particularly challenging for women over 50 who need four serves a day of calcium-rich milk, cheese and yoghurt to protect against thinning bones. “Sounds like a lot,” admits The Dairy Kitchen’s Amanda Menegazzo. “But it is actually do-able and delicious, especially with our new collection of eight contemporary easy-to-prepare recipes at hand.” The warm, aromatic Homemade Chai Latte is a good place to start. “This melting pot of warm milk infused with fragrant spices such as cinnamon, cardamom and cloves will comfort you on the chilliest winter’s day,” promises Amanda. “It is the perfect calcium-rich snack, containing four times more calcium than a regular cup of tea with a splash of milk.”

Homemade Chai Latte Serves 2

Soup’s another warmer that can easily be given a calcium boost. “Making soup is a great time-saver, as you can prepare ahead of time and make a double batch to freeze in portions for later,” suggests Amanda. “Our Creamy Carrot and Coriander Soup is simple to create and is incredibly nutritious thanks to the use of fresh, seasonal produce combined with milk and natural yoghurt.” Nothing beats a homemade pie, and The Dairy Kitchen’s Kale, Pumpkin and Feta Pie is really versatile. Perfect piping hot straight from the oven for dinner or delicious cold for lunch. “This is a rustic pie with a modern twist, combining seasonal pumpkin and kale with a crunchy top of filo pastry and pepita seeds – and the combination of feta, parmesan and milk, ensures that each portion contains a serve of dairy. By the age of 85 one in two Australians will have been diagnosed with cancer Australian Institute of health and Welfare (AIHW). It’s a sobering statistic, and one which means that in our lifetime we will all be touched by cancer. Whether personally, or through loved ones – no one is immune. We all want a cancer free future for our loved ones Which makes Cancer Council NSW so determined to find better treatments and management for cancer patients and their loved ones. Gordana recalls when her mum, Anica, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. “I remember how hard it was for mum when the doctors told her she would need a mastectomy and would lose her right breast. It wasn’t just about her appearance, for her it was a connection to motherhood as well.” Luckily Anica received world class support from Cancer Council NSW, and lived out her life cancer free. “The support that mum, and our whole family received during that time and afterward was incredible. It blew us away. If it weren’t for the support in place Mum’s story would have been so different.” ”When Mum recovered and decided to leave a financial gift to the Cancer Council in her will, our whole family agreed with her choice. It was her chance to give back to a community that had given her a new chance at life.” Gordana could not be more proud of Anica’s decision to leave a bequest to Cancer Council NSW. “I want to encourage you, just like mum did, to talk to the Cancer Council about leaving a gift in your will and living on in the fight against cancer”. If you share the hope and vision of Anica and Cancer Council NSW to beat cancer and would like more information about leaving a gift in your will, visit cancercouncil.com.au/bequests or please contact our Bequest team on (02) 9334 1479.

Australia’s dentists echo Calvary hospitals’ objections to private health insurers dictating terms for healthcare The Australian Dental Association (ADA) supports Calvary in its protests against attempts by Medibank Private to dictate the terms on which healthcare is provided in Australia. The ADA understands from news reports that Medibank Private is seeking to impose measures that would restrict its Fund members’ access to Calvary facilities and care. President of the ADA, Dr Rick Olive AM RFD said: “What we are seeing in these negotiations is the beginning of more aggressive moves by certain private health insurers to interfere in the clinical practices and frameworks used by established health services. Financial considerations of the insurer rather than what is clinically appropriate in the delivery of health to its members is becoming the main driver of how it wants to provide healthcare. “For years, the ADA has routinely alerted the public, its members and regulators about aggressive approaches of private health insurers in dentistry. Private health insurers’ placement of annual and lifetime limits on benefits paid, exclusion of cover for some treatments and their failure to review their rebates in line with the ever increasing premium increases or CPI or at all in some cases have been the issues the ADA has raised. The ADA maintains that PHIs are obliged to meet their obligations to insure services for patients who undertake treatment outlined on the advice of their dentist. There is no public policy reason to justify restricting or limiting the care that policyholders clinically are required to receive.” The ADA alerts the public that these aggressive moves by Medibank to Calvary are an indication of private health insurers appointing themselves as the gatekeepers to appropriate healthcare. When private health insurers demand that policyholders change their health providers, those policyholders should consider changing their private health insurer instead. Dr Olive concluded: “The crucial missing pieces to comprehensive private health insurance reform are changes to the regulations underpinning this industry to always ensure that efficiencies or cost cutting are never done at the expense of evidence-based safety and quality health considerations for policy holders. These current moves by the one of the biggest private health insurers in the country are an indication of what is to come in the private health sector if there is no action taken by the Australian Government.”

There has to be some light-heartedness in view of the current global terrorism situation, and who better to shine it than. . . . . . . . John Cleese? ALERTS TO THREATS From JOHN CLEESE The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to “Peeved.” Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the

Spanish Armada. The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s get the Bastards.” They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years. The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France ‘s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country’s military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.” The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance “to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels: “Invade a Neighbour” and “Lose.” Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels. Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries” to “She’ll be right, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.” So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level. It’s a sobering statistic, and one which means that in our lifetime we will all be touched by cancer. Whether personally, or through loved ones – no one is immune. Malcolm Edwards is well aware of this statistic. He was diagnosed with two carcinoid tumours in 2007. Following treatment that included successful removal of one of the tumours and reducing the other, Malcolm’s doctor told him, “he can’t cure me, but he can control the cancer, and that’s the best news you can ever have”. When Malcolm updated his Will to include a gift to Cancer Council NSW many years ago, he did so thinking of his children and grandchildren.

The nation at war: Australia’s most important battlefields remembered in key tours of WWI, WWII, Vietnam and Solomon Islands sites Leading Australian historian and founder of Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours, Mat McLachlan, announces top 5 battlefield tours to commemorate key upcoming anniversaries ours to Commemorations offer cause to reflect and remember the actions of our wartime ancestors and those who failed to return from the front lines of our greatest theatres of war – and there is no better way to recall, respect and honour our predecessors than to retrace their footsteps on the very same battlefields where many of our national legends of bravery and valour were born. This year marks the centenary of World War I, the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the 50th anniversary of the deployment to Vietnam – and the number of Australians travelling to trace fallen ancestors and to learn more about the nation’s war-time history is on the increase, according to Mat McLachlan. “From the iconic Anzac experience at Gallipoli to spending Remembrance Day on the Western Front or tracing the rise and fall of Nazi Germany, more and more Australians are adding a battlefield travel experience to their bucket list, and with good reason,” said McLachlan. Gallipoli peninsula Birthplace of the Anzac legend and the most famous destination for battlefield tourists, Gallipoli remains an absolute must for both the expert and the novice. War-time stories are truly brought to life when visitors see firsthand the remaining frontline trenches at North Beach, and gaze upon the stark landscape and rugged cliffs which faced the young Anzac soldiers at the infamous landing. Other must-sees while in Turkey include Istanbul’s Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and central bazaar, as well as Ancient Troy. The Western Front A staggering 45,000 Australians were killed on the Western Front, with the key locations of Ypres and The Somme being home to the most fascinating history, culture and immense natural beauty. Top spots to visit include the quaint town of Ypres – the site of four great battles during WWI and where today’s visitors experience a chilling rendition of the last post at the Menin Gate where the names of 54,000 Commonwealth soldiers are etched. The Australian National memorial at Villiers-Bretonneux and the picturesque riverside village of Hamel, where the local townsfolk host a special breakfast each Anzac Day for Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours’ guests, are further symbols of the contribution made by Anzac soldiers in this corner of the world.

Long Tan, Vietnam More than 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam, 521 lost their lives and over 3000 were wounded. Today, those soldiers are remembered at the unique Australian war memorial, the Long Tan Cross, which marks the site – on a rubber plantation – of the Battle of Long Tan. The Battle of Long Tan was one of the bloodiest of the Vietnam War and 2016 will mark 50 years since the conflict. Other key sites to include are the World Heritage-listed ancient town of Hoi An, the dolomite islets of Ha Long Bay and the Cu Chi tunnels – where Australians first operated in the Iron Triangle in 1965. The European Theatre of WWII, Germany There’s no better way to learn about Australia’s involvement in the European Theatre of World War II – a vast area of heavy fighting across Europe – than via an itinerary that follows the rise and fall of the Third Reich in Germany. From the 1920s origins of the National Socialist Party in Munich to the horrors of the Holocaust, and the surrender and eventual collapse of the Nazi empire, this is a trip encompassing some of the darkest moments for Europe in recent centuries. Mustsees include the Bavarian Alps retreat of Hitler and his Nazi party leaders, Berchtesgaden, the historic city of Nuremberg where 1930s Nazi rallies took hold, and the Berlin Commonwealth War Cemetery, final resting place of Commonwealth troops, including Australians and New Zealanders. Solomon Islands The Solomon Islands was home to one of World War II’s major Pacific campaigns, and the site of the largest naval battle fought so close to the Australian mainland. As a result, Honiara and it surrounding islands boast a treasure chest of WWII relics including planes wrecked in the jungle and more than 50 sunken battleships, including Australian naval vessels and Japanese cruisers. Highlights include Red Beach, where Allied troops first landed, the jungle ‘amtrac graveyard’ which is home to dozens of WWII amphibious tractors, Iron Bottom Sound with its graveyard of sunken ships and Honiara Central Market – a hive of activity for everything from fresh fish and produce to artisan wares. “Blood, sweat, tears and very good times have been part and parcel of our history. And while today’s announcement looks at our past – our National Heritage Listing is now very much about our future, “Mayor Wincen Cuy said. “Our Past is our future. We do have a great story to tell.” “We are often spoken of as unique and distinct; a place like no other. We exhibit the strongest of qualities as a community. We have spirit, resilience, determination and a commitment to supporting each other. “ “Equally strong is our history and identity – a place known across Australia through the history of mining and workers’ struggles, and as a place where history is every-present. We are a proud community and this citation is wonderful recognition of all who have made Broken Hill what it is today, and will continue to make our great city into the future.” Discovered by boundary rider and prospector, Charles Rasp in 1883, Broken Hill contains one of the world’s largest deposits of silver, lead and zinc, the ore seam known as the Line of Lode, which continues to be mined today. With the average lifespan of a mine being approximately 20 years, the ongoing, large scale mining operations which have continued for more than 130 years at Broken Hill makes this site unique.
