MUSGRAVE HILL Cnr Musgrave Ave & Kumbari Ave,
About five years ago, George Mamo was relaxing at home watching TV when an advertisement promoting Kokoda Track tours piqued his interest – and emotions. The fact that more than 600 Australians were killed and nearly 1700 wounded during the Japanese invasion of Papua New Guinea in 1942 was not lost on George, who is of Maltese descent but a proud and passionate Australian. George was in the early stages of establishing his own caravan brand, and ‘Kokoda’ had struck a chord with him, so he decided to make a proposition, albeit with compassion and dignity at the frontline of his mind. George approached the Victorian RSL which referred him to the offices of the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion which approved his ‘Kokoda’ request, on the proviso that Kokodabuilt caravans were 100 per cent Australian made. BACKYARD BLITZ “It (being made in Australia) was the only stipulation, and I responded ‘bloody oath’,” George said. So, Kokoda Caravans was born, and George made a personal promise to produce only fair- dinkum ‘Australian-made’ products. Kokoda also purposely never has a sale when Anzac Day is approaching. “You can’t capitalise on that moment, it is sacred,” George said. Kokoda sold almost 400 caravans in its first year of operation and that has now increased to about 1000 per year.

Scott Thulborn is used to success on the world stage…Yet still a humble champion. Cutting and rolling is part of what his week will demand as a bowling club greenskeeper. Great greens are often down to good timing, and he spends a heap of time around the club – this also enables him to get in more practice on the green. And all those extra hours spent looking after and on the grass has resulted in some amazing feats for Thulborn. Recently, Scott was able to enjoy a fairy-tale finish to the 10th annual Asia Pacific Merdeka Championships in Malaysia. “WOW! What a week, what an experience! Very thrilled to be able to head home to Australia with a gold medal!” says Scott after the recent win. With team mates Caloundra’s Bolivia Millerick, St Johns Parks’ Dawn Hayman and Ben Twist, Adelaide’s Scott Thulborn was a fantastic skip and lead by example… “To be able to stand on the podium as they played the Australian Anthem is a moment I will never forget!!” says Scott AKA Scotty T. When asked how he pulled up after the win, Thulborn says “I do have some jet lag but no time for rest it’s straight back to work…” Nicknamed one of Adelaide’s Endurance Players, Scott created history recently becoming the Australian Champion of Champions making him the first player to win back-toback titles. This South Australian’s feat comes after almost 40 straight victories in club singles and champion of champion events across three states over the past two years. “I’m feeling really excited right now and of course really happy to have done my club Adelaide proud,” he said. Thulborn says he was feeling a bit overwhelmed with what he was able to achieve with his recent win. “I’m excited for the challenge of the World Bowls Champion of Champions at Club Helensvale in a months’ time and hope that I can do my country proud on the international stage.” Thulborn will represent Australia again before the end of the year, at Club Helensvale where he will hope to continue his amazing run in singles. “Wow. Aussie champ of champs back to back! It’s what dreams are made of! I will remember this one for life!” says Scotty.

James Cook University and army reach agreement over education James Cook University will become part of the Army Tertiary Education Program, enabling Australian Defence Force personnel’s Royal Military College studies to count toward a business degree at the university. Commander of the 3rd Brigade, Brigadier Roger Noble, said the Australian Army made education a priority and said the arrangement would benefit applicants from around Australia and those on deployment. “It is not just Townsville, so when they get posted or they move away they can continue to study online.” Brigadier Noble said the business degree was a good fit for the army, and he expected the agreement would expand to include other disciplines in future. “I think it is an immediate fit because the army is a big business,” he said. James Cook University and Lavarack Barracks were both officially opened on July 29, 1966, with prime minster Holt in attendance. At the opening of the army barracks, Mr Holt remarked that Townsville was fortunate to have Australia’s first university in the tropics and an “outstanding military establishment”. “It is said the pen is mightier than the sword and I suppose that argument still continues,” Mr Holt said at the time. “Well, Townsville has both, and Australia needs both.” Brigadier Noble said Mr Holt’s hopes for the university and army base and how they could interact and facilitate growth in the region had been visionary. “He clearly understood that putting a major army base and a major educational facility in the north would help grow Townsville,” he said. “I would hope the relationship goes beyond just formal courses and study, so what should happen here is we should be part of the dialogue that goes on in the community.” James Cook University deputy vice chancellor Professor Robyn McGuiggan and Commander of the 3rd Brigade, Brigadier Roger Noble, shake on a new agreement.
After spending two years travelling across Australia, former local residents Lyn and Stephen Lamble found the decision to return to the Sunshine Coast and purchase a home at Nature’s Edge Over 50’s community one of the easiest decisions they have ever made. “For nearly two years we travelled across Australia and while we were enjoying our new experiences we also looked at each area in terms of being a potential retirement base. The more places we visited, the soon it became clear that the Sunshine Coast was one of the very best places to live in retirement. “It’s just too cold in winter down south and there is the added cost of heating and maintaining a winter wardrobe of warm clothes while further north, the tropics are too hot and humid in summer. West Australia is really beautiful but it’s too remote and very expensive,” Stephen said. Lyn said the Sunshine Coast has a rare blend of excellent health and medical facilities, a strong education base, good shopping with plenty of competition and choice, quality restaurants and some of the best beaches in the world. “We looked at retirement villages and over 50’s communities in every state and territory and specifically on the Sunshine Coast and Nature’s Edge was the stand out. The location is perfectly central to everything and the rainforest setting attracts a stunning range of birdlife literally on our backdoor step. We also love that there are no exit fees and the recreation centre and storage area for our motorhome will be welcome additions. “We also love the design of our home, it’s modern and comfortable, well insulated and has fantastic energy efficient elements which ensures our long terms running costs are kept to a minimum. We also have our own veggie garden and there is even free dam water to keep all the plants well watered. “One of the biggest plusses is that we can shut the door and head off in the motorhome and keep exploring the country without having to worry about maintenance and mowing the lawn while knowing the home is safe and secure,” Lyn said. Nature’s Edge Sales Manager Lyn Morrison said the project continues to be a hive of activity with new residents moving in on a daily basis while civil works on the premium, 45 elevated lots in the third stage release is well underway. “The elevated lots are surrounded by untouched rainforest and a magnificent 3-metre-plus high rock feature wall. Each lot is individually sized and some have larger backyards with a rainforest backdrop which provides privacy in a tranquil setting. “It’s certainly our premium release and we have around 45% of this stage already under contract and interest is very strong in the remaining lots,” Lyn said. Meanwhile plans for the $2 million state of the art Nature’s Edge Leisure Centre are being finalised with construction expected to commence early next year. Lyn says the Leisure Centre is a huge drawcard for buyers and will become the hub of activity for residents at Nature’s Edge. “We’re finding that most of our buyers really embrace an active lifestyle so we know it’s going to be hugely popular — and why wouldn’t you spend your time being active and doing the things you love as opposed to doing maintenance and mowing lawns?” Lyn said. The Leisure Centre will feature a bowling green, tennis court, pool, spa, gym, massage area and a media room. There will also be a leisure club with a bar, dance floor as well as a dining and entertainment area. To arrange an inspection of the display homes and to find out more about Nature’s Edge Over 50’s lifestyle community, call Lyn Morrison at the Natures Edge sales office on 1800 218 898 or visit www.naturesedgebuderim.com.au

JOAN WILSON – SUMMARY OF BOWLING ACHIEVEMENTS I first became interested in the game of bowls when my husband was playing bowls at Coolum in 1963 while we were holidaying there. At that time I was still playing tennis, but gave it up after developing a love for bowls. It was then that I joined E.P.L.B.C. and after taking various positions became the 5th President of the Club. Later in the 70’s I became an accredited Coach and Umpire for 20 and 33 years respectively, and was elected to the State Coaching Committee for 2 years. This entailed travelling extensively throughout Queensland giving Coaching Lectures and conducting examinations . In the years following I held several positions leading up to State President in 10 BOWLS PLUS QUEENSLAND OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2015

Something Different Something Fun and Burdekin Snow Country towns are not backward in coming forward with innovative and fun events. This edition we visit Ayr Bowling Club in North Queensland for an annual event called “Murray’s Mayhem”. Jim Murray, long standing member of the club, and his band of willing helpers manage a fun afternoon of triples. Mind you, there are only fourteen rinks and players have to register early or miss out. The madness occurs on a Saturday afternoon around the 24th of July every year. This not only coincides with Jim’s birthday but also is the time of year when southerners trek north to warmer living. In fact there are standing bookings from Horsham, South Australia and Gold Coast. The gist of the play is that at the end of seven ends the team rotates positions so that throughout the afternoon all team members play seven ends at lead, second and skip. And you don’t have to be a BA registered player to participate. It raises a few eye brows with seasoned players’ seeing the sometime hidden competencies come to the fore (and reverse?) and it gives non members a taste of the various skills for bowls. For newcomers it reaches out in fun and gamesmanship. The “Winners” are a winning team from one green picked by selecting a numbered ping pong ball relating to the rinks there and similarly another ping pong ball randomly selects a winner from a rink on the other green.

In terms of management of the day, Ayr is in the centre of the Burdekin irrigated sugar cane area and being irrigated, the cane is burned off the night before harvesting, whereas in other cane areas it is harvested green. This burning off provides a coating of ash over the area and the locals give it the moniker of “Burdekin Snow”. The Ayr Bowling Club has a roster of members whose duty it is to air blow the Burdekin Snow from the synthetic greens. While there are retractable shades over the greens they are not left out at night to protect them from the snow, hence the need for the greens’ blow clean. The club, families and visitors come for a party time with “bring a plate” refreshments.
The message is, if you will be around Ayr next July, get in early and register a spot with Jim on 07 4783 1663 or contact the Ayr Bowling Club. Visitors are welcome always.

Australia capped off a six-day campaign in Malaysia with a gold medal in October at the US$50,000 Asia Pacific Merdeka Championships. Caloundra’s Bolivia Millerick, St Johns Parks’ Dawn Hayman and Ben Twist, and Adelaide’s Scott Thulborn enjoyed a fairytale finish to the 10th annual tournament, which up until last year had been an internationally capped event for Australian competitors, at the Bayuemas Indoor Bowls Stadium in Pandamaran, Klang. SA/NT National Training Centre Coach Faye Luke, who took the reins as the team’s coach, was complimentary of all team member’s contributions in the gold medal decider at the 16 nation event. The quartet overcame the highly fancied Malaysian A team in the ultimate decider, powering past Siti Zalina Ahmad, Nur Fidrah Noh, Zulhimie Redzuan and Fairul Izwan Muin 21-7 to secure the US$10,000 first-placed prize cheque, with the game cut short of the last end. “Dawn gave us great starts with close consistent bowls, Bolivia Millerick in second played a fantastic game and her best for the tournament, Ben Twist converted, drew, and positioned his bowls with precision and Scott Thulborn was a fantastic skip and lead by example, both on the drive and the draw,” Luke said.
A tense semi-final wins over the top mid-west team of Frank Souza from Arizona winning on the last end. Grand final was always going to be a battle International team Champion lead Mert Isaacman USA T Hellart and Andy Doctor Netherlands with Canadian champion Michelle Larue skip Shot for shot for ten ends of the sixteen end contest. Skip Halmai Snr driving to perfection, keeping the scores level with fours ends to play. Finally a break-through Donaldson changed the length slightly and a front-end touch allowed, Halmai to build the head cover the tee. Second last end the Aussies were one up on the board and three up on the head. Larue shook his head, he didn’t like it but the groove bowl swooped on Halmai’s shot bowl which just spun around and fell out. All square last end, after a team discussion Mert Isaacman took the mat up four paces from the tee threw the jack slightly longer and put his first bowl one foot from the jack. Undeterred, Donaldson drew his first bowl between the shot and the jack. Isaacman making sure he reached in the tricky conditions went a metre passed with his second . Keith then drew second bowl just behind the jack. The danger man, Andy Doctor failed while frank Vella placed his bowls to perfection, enabling Halmai to protect the head as best he could. Larue’s first bowl was wide, his second ran into short bowls and the jubilant team realised they were the USA fours champions 2015.
“It was a complete team effort and breathtaking to watch. “The Malaysians were completely blown away and their very telling bowls at times were simply out played by our team.” The green and gold representatives also bough two further medals back to Australians shores, with Hayman and Twist each procuring a bronze medal in the blue-ribbon singles disciplines, after narrowly losing their semi-finals. Earlier in the tournament, the mixed pairs combination of Millerick and Thulborn came close to tasting success, but were upended in the quarter-finals. Australian based Norfolk Island representative Carmen Andersen took home the women’s singles golden medallion, defeating Malaysia’s reigning World Cup winner Siti Zalina Ahmad 14-10. Jackaroos Named for Asia
Pacific Championship Bowls Australia have confirmed the 10 players entrusted with the nation’s hopes at the quadrennial Asia Pacific Championships in New Zealand next month. Bowls Australia has named the 10-strong Jackaroos team to contest next month’s 18-nation Asia Pacific Championships event in New Zealand. The sport’s national selection panel have elected to leave nothing to chance at the quadrennial tournament, which is the Southern Hemisphere’s qualifier event for next year’s coveted World Bowls Championships, naming a star-studded contingent while also affording Cabramatta’s Ray Pearse the opportunity to make his international debut. Pearse, 31, has been a mainstay in the perennial powerhouse NSW Blues state team for a number of years, but only broke into the top tier Australian squad in July following an arduous selection camp on the Gold Coast. Pearse will cut his teeth in the Jackaroos team leading for Club Helensvale’s Nathan Rice in the pairs and slotting into second spot of the fours discipline. While Pearse will be handed his first international cap as Australia’s 141st male representative, on the opposite end of the spectrum, the most prolific international combatant in the nation’s history, Karen Murphy, has not only been granted the chance to add to her impressive record, but will do so in the blue-ribbon women’s singles.
fire-power to both disciplines as the skip. Rounding out the women’s team for the 13-day, 18-nation event is 2014 Australian Open singles and fours champion Anne Johns, also from St Johns Park. In the men’s line-up, three-time Bowls Australia International Bowler of the Year Aron Sherriff has again been tasked with spearheading the blue-ribbon singles discipline, after winning bronze at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, and will also skip the triples contingent. Making up the five-strong men’s team are two reigning world champions in Grange’s Wayne Ruediger and Club Helensvale’s Mark Casey, with Ruediger leading the triples and fours, while Casey slots in as second in the triples and will take the reins as skip of the fours. Australia completed the 2011 version of the tournament with eight medals from as many disciplines as the host nation in the last staging in Adelaide; winning two gold, five silver and a bronze medal, to reaffirm its position as one of the world’s genuine bowls superpowers. It followed up that Asia Pacific Championships success with a historic haul from the sport’s most prestigious event, the World Bowls Championships a year later, with five gold and two silver from eight disciplines to secure the men’s, women’s and overall trophies, and in the process ensured automatic qualification to the 2016 event.
“Pearse will be handed his first international cap as Australia’s 141st male representative”
Murphy, who will notch up her 500th international appearance at the Hong Kong Classic from November 7 to 15, will lead the charge for the women’s outfit in the singles, where she has a proven track record, as the reigning World Bowls Championships singles gold medallist from 2012, and will also guide St Johns Park’s 25 year-old international veteran Kelsey Cottrell in the pairs; who also lines up as second in the fours team.
The 2015 Asia Pacific Championships will be held in Christchurch, New Zealand from November 24 to December 6, staged at Burnside Bowling Club with support from Bowls Papanui, featuring 168 competitors from 18 countries.
Two Glasgow Commonwealth Games competitors, Sunbury’s Carla Odgers and Raymond Terrace’s Natasha Scott, will return to international duties after missing out on the Trans Tasman test series earlier this year.
Women’s team: Singles – Karen Murphy (40, Cabramatta, NSW) Pairs – Kelsey Cottrell (25, St Johns Park, NSW) & Karen Murphy Triples – Carla Odgers (25, Sunbury, VIC), Anne Johns (35, St Johns Park, NSW) & Natasha Scott (24, Raymond Terrace, NSW) Fours – Carla Odgers, Kelsey Cottrell, Anne Johns & Natasha Scott
While neither secured a podium finish in Scotland last year, both have been in scintillating form on the national stage recently having claimed the 2015 Australian Open women’s fours title together - which was just one of many victories for Scott, who took the title of Australia’s number one female bowler at the conclusion of the ranking season following that event. Odgers will lead the triples and fours, while Scott will provide the
Men’s team: Singles – Aron Sherriff (29, Ettalong Memorial, NSW) Pairs – Ray Pearse (31, Cabramatta, NSW) & Nathan Rice (36, Club Helensvale, QLD) Triples – Wayne Ruediger (39, Grange, SA), Mark Casey (33, Club Helensvale, QLD) & Aron Sherriff Fours – Wayne Ruediger, Ray Pearse, Nathan Rice & Mark Casey

The Australian Under-18 Championships came to a stunning conclusion at Tuggeranong Vikings Lawn Bowls Club with the country’s elite junior bowlers capping off a fantastic event with more high quality and high-energy finals this afternoon. Queensland will leave Canberra with the girls, boys and overall trophies in what was a dominating and consistent performance from all 10 of their players across week; however 60 medals have been handed out at these championships and six State and Territories shared the honours.
Queensland claimed the boys, girls and overall state champion trophies at the Australian Under-18 Championships in what was one of the best supported and most successful events ever held in the nations capital
MAROONS DOMINATION
NSW’s Jono Davis has continued his hot streak of form collecting another prestigious gold medal this year to go with the two he bagged at the recent Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa. In the boys singles Davis was too good for Queenslander Dale WcWhinney-Shillington who entered the match off the back of a strong performance that won him bronze in the boys pairs; Davis never dropped more than two shots on any end in the match and after getting out to a 12-6 lead, Davis kept his nose in front for the rest of the match winning the final 21-15. The Northern Territory was contesting their only gold medal match in the girls pairs but unfortunately history couldn’t be created
today with the strong NSW outfit of Madeline Goncalves and Molly Wilton defeating Kerri-Ann Zavazal and Shae Smith 24-12. The victory in the pairs was the only gold for the NSW girls at these championships; however their triples combination of Cindy McGrath, Kate Matthews and Kate Davis claimed bronze against Western Australia 21-15 this afternoon. Queensland girls continued their dominance on the competition notching up another gold medal in the girls triples to accompany their gold in the singles and fours. With two ends to play Queensland was
trailing by one but a full count of six on the second last end put them in a commanding position; Victoria picked up two on the last end but it wasn’t enough to chase down the maroons in yet another finals victory. Victoria was able to claim revenge in the girls pairs with Mikayla Long and Tayla Morison defeating Sophie Young and Tiffany Murray 18-7 in the bronze medal match.
In the boys fours Queensland dropped the last three ends of the match to NSW however the lead they had established in the middle stages of the match was enough to keep the maroons in front; Mitchell Mears, Hayden Vogler and Jacob Nelson picked up their second gold medal these championships whilst Nic Gosley added to his bronze from the boys pairs. Northern Territory had another crack for a medal this event however the Victorian boys fours combination of Todd Trewarne, Jordan Yates, Curtis Hanley and Joshua Corless had a different idea claiming the second bronze medal for the Victorian boys this Australian Under-18 Championships. Victoria’s Jayden Christie was victorious over Tasmania’s Mitchell Banks 21-10 in their bronze medal play-off in the boys singles.

on the land was made by James Malcolm Newman, O.B.E., to the Returned Soldiers, Sailors and Airmens Imperial League of Australia (now known as the RSL) for a War Veterans Home. In May 1953 a meeting was held to form a Citizens Bowls Club to take over the responsibility for looking after the green at the War Veterans Home thus ensuring that the residents would still be able to enjoy their game of bowls. A Committee was formed and the Club was officially named The War Veterans Home and Caboolture District Bowling Club on 9 September, 1953. In 1969 the Club built a modern clubhouse complete with a dining room, kitchen and bar at a cost of $30000. In 1974 with the increased demand for play, the Club decided to move to another site in the Caboolture Lakes Sporting Complex. Two greens and a clubhouse were completed in 1979 and the original club split into two Clubs. The Caboolture Lakes Bowls Club was formed by those bowlers who moved to the Sporting Complex, while those remaining at the War Veterans Home renamed the club the

Flapper calls an end to international career Matthew Flapper is hanging up the boots on a wonderful international career to spend more time with family and friends and concentrate on his role at Ocean Grove Bowling Club Matthew Flapper announced his retirement from the Australian Jackaroos Squad in October, bringing to an end what has been a fantastic career for the much loved Australian star. Flapper, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist with 72 international appearances under his belt, has left a lasting legacy on his Australian teammates as one of the most respected players of his era. Flapper made his international debut in the 2012 Asia Pacific Merdeka International alongside Dylan Fisher, Carla Odgers and Claire Turley and after years of hard work and dedication Flapper’s greatest achievement came at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he skipped the men’s fours to bronze. The Victorian representative has led the Australian Jackaroos to many a victory during his time skipping for his nation and can walk away from international competition proud of his achievements whilst donning on the green and gold. Words of support have come in thick and fast from his Australian Jackaroos teammates expressing how much Flapper will be missed in the green and gold and as a popular member of the team. Australian Jackaroos Captain Lynsey Clarke shared her memories of Matthew Flapper and wished him well post-Australian representation. “Matt’s contribution to the Australian team and its culture over the years has been huge and will be sorely missed,” Clarke said. “Not only will we miss your on green ability and presence but that loud booming voice we all love hearing in support of all the Aussie’s out on the green.
“I still remember how awesome it was hearing you cheer out for the first time during your first Trans-Tasman in New Zealand, that voice! “Congratulations on everything you have accomplished.” “What a true gentleman; Matt took me under his wing on my first trip with the Australian contingent to New Zealand, this is something that I will never forget and Matt will continue to be a player that I look up too, what a competitor,” said Ray Pearse. “We will absolutely miss having you around the squad mate, over the past few years you certainly brought something special to the men’s squad; I loved playing every minute alongside you and you should be very proud of your achievements,” said Mark Casey. “Matt you have been a wonderful representative for Australia, a true ambassador for our country and our sport and a great friend to all, you will be missed,” said Australian Assistant Coach Gary Willis. National Coach Steve Glasson OAM says Matthew can be extremely proud of all he has done and contributed in his time at the top of our sport. “Please accept my heartiest congratulations on all you have achieved on and off the green, we will miss you,” said Glasson. “Flappers brought his personal touch to the team, from his highly competitive nature, his desire to always put the team first, his love and honour of the green and gold, his wicked sense of humour and let’s not forget his ‘savage’ collection of funds at team fine sessions.” Ocean Grove Bowling Club has been an incredible support to Flapper in his endeavours to represent Australia; this was evident when they hosted the Australia vs Malaysia test series in 2013 and prepared their greens to replicate the slow Northern Hemisphere greens in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Bowls Australia congratulate Matthew Flapper on his wonderful career and wish him the best in ‘life after bowls’. BOWLS PLUS QUEENSLAND OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2015 19

Teys Joins Australian Jackaroos Squad Warilla’s Aaron Teys has been elevated to the Australian Jackaroos Squad. Warilla’s Aaron Teys has been confirmed as a late inclusion in the Australian Jackaroos Squad for 2015/16, following a stunning showing at the national high performance selection camp in New Zealand last week. Teys, 21, thoroughly impressed National Coach Steve Glasson and his selectors during the gruelling six-day camp, which was used to trial 21 players on the surface and in the conditions of next month’s 18-nation Asia Pacific Championships event in Christchurch. Despite not being named as one of the five male competitors chosen to don the green and gold uniform at the New Zealand event from November 24 to December 6, Teys did more than enough to prove he has what it takes to mix it with the best in the business and has been formally promoted to the ranks of the nation’s top high performance tier, the Australian Jackaroos Squad, elevated from the NSW National Training Centre Squad. The apprentice greenkeeper not only dazzled at the selection camp, but has been in scintillating form at some of the sport’s biggest events in recent months, including winning the nation’s most coveted title, the Australian Open’s $16,000 blue-ribbon men’s singles crown, a semi-final finish to eventual winner Jeremy Henry at the $30,000 Australian Indoor Championships, and a stellar performance at the $60,000 National 5 A Side to help guide his Warilla Gorillas contingent to a historic third title. “It is with much pleasure that I advise the promotion of Aaron Teys to being a formal member of the Jackaroos Squad,” Glasson said. “Aaron has demonstrated he has the ability and determination to be an official member of Australia’s elite and through continued persistence and work ethic, will hopefully one day get the opportunity to represent his country in competition.” Teys joins the 20 player Jackaroos team as the youngest current male member, but alongside a host of fresh blood in a new-look contingent that was announced in July, including Ellen Ryan, 18, Kristina Krstic, 21, Aaron Wilson, 23, Max Kleinig, 26, and Ray Pearse, 31.
Bowls Australia congratulate Aaron Teys on his elevation to the Australian Jackaroos Squad.

The Eights is an exciting new initiative in
Lawn Bowls with the emphasis on reducing travel time, costs and catering for the smaller Bowls Clubs. The vision of “The Eights” was evolved by a group of keen bowlers from local Sunshine Coast Bowls Clubs and is scheduled to commence in January 2016. There will be 10 weeks of home and away games with finals held two weeks later. Darren Colburn a Buderim member first floated the idea some months back and since then; interest has been positive and gained momentum. Geoff Brown, Chairman of the EIGHTS organising committee, explained to JUST BOWLS the format of the competition which in the first year would be for male bowlers only. (Hopefully Lady Bowlers will be included the following year). Structure of the competition will include:
ORGANISING COMMITTEE – Geoff Brown (Palmwoods and Buderim) Chairperson Mob 0421525422 Darren Colburn (Secretary/Treasurer (Buderim) Mob 0400733737. Barry Ashby (Buderim) Sponsorship – Mob 0418710210. Gary Evans – (Gympie Albert) Mob 0408070328 – Northern Co-ordinator. Southern Co-ordinator to be advised. Chairman Geoff Brown (pictured below) told JUST BOWLS his group wants to encourage players to play bowls not to find excuses NOT to play. He said the Committee was happy for Clubs to play alongside (as a cheaper alternative) to the proven Super Challenge and Premier Leagues competitions. And would definitely encourage smaller Clubs to combine with another Club to make up a team of eight. Geoff sees this competition as one that Club Managements will find exciting and cost effective to enter. With the benefits of reduced travel, an even mix of home and away games, entry fees recouped in green fees, prize money for rink wins and it caters for the smaller clubs. Expressions of interest have already been received from several clubs including -Mooloolaba, Buderim, Caloundra, Pelican Waters, Nambour, Gympie and Maleny but would welcome entries from other clubs as well. Latest News from Bowls Australia Solargain Perth Suns show faith in local talent Solargain Perth Suns have named an all Western Australian line-up for APL03 announcing state skipper Matt Ellul to make his debut The Solargain Perth Suns have changed their tactics going into APL03 naming a home grown Western Australian side for their third crack at claiming the spoils in the $110,000 Australian Premier League. After last year’s semi-final performance, Solargain Perth Suns have been forced to make changes to their line-up after their international star Jeremy Henry announced he will be joining rival team the XXXX Brisbane Gold who finished last in APL02. Choosing to look no further than the west to form their 2015 lineup, Perth Suns will join a number of competing franchises who opt to select home grown talent when forming their formidable APL teams. Matt Ellul will count down the days to APL03 after receiving the unexpected call up to compete in what will be the biggest event in his short career. Bowls WA CEO Ken Pride says Matt is a naturally talented player who has a great shot making ability and will embrace the APL environment. “The hype and crowd involvement will suit Matt down to the ground and I predict him to be one of the finds of APL03 – certainly we are looking to make our first final and the team has been selected to achieve just that,” Mr Pride said. Ellul, a member of one of Perth’s powerhouse clubs Manning Memorial, has been Western Australia’s leading skip for the past two years after strong performances for his state at South Burnie in Tasmania and most recently at WA’s home Australian Sides Championships played at Yokine Districts. Ellul will be joined by the joint Rosenthal Medal winners Clive Adams and Tom Mitchell who will be hoping to improve upon Perth Suns back-to-back semi-final loses in the first two instalments of the revolutionary APL.
Ellul says he is looking forward to the APL and competing alongside players of whom he has formed friendships with during his time representing WA. “I’m looking forward to a great challenge with great mates,” said the highly motivated Ellul. “The Solargain Perth Suns are confident in performing strongly against quality opposition come November.” Solargain Perth Suns stalwart Clive Adams will once again lead the way for his franchise in APL03 as their only member to play in all three APL’s at Club Pine Rivers. Adams experience stretches far beyond his APL appearances having had a long and successful career that has seen him wear the green and gold in a development series against New Zealand in 2013 and represent Western Australia for the best part of for 14 years, playing over 180 games for the Sandgropers. Tom Mitchell got a taste for APL last year and will be better off for the experience; the current Australian Champion of Champion singles runner-up was at ease on the big stage last year and having also won back-to-back Rosenthal Medals, Mitchell is certainly one of the most in form players in the west. With three of Western Australia’s best skips named in their side, Coach Wayne Turley will have the tough job of selecting their positions and substitute options; however as a Commonwealth Games gold medallist in his own right and having coached the Perth Suns to consecutive semi-final appearances in APL01 and APL02, Turley will no doubt get the best out of his team once more. The third instalment of the Australian Premier League will be held at Club Pine Rivers from November 10-13 and can be watched live on Fox Sports. Get behind your team for APL03; it’s going to be the best yet!

elcome to yesteryear as you begin your journey up our Jacaranda lined driveway, a sea of purple in October. As you reach the top of the hill you will find two beautiful old Queenslanders either side of the driveway. On the left is the original historic colonial homestead of the property “Tamborine House”, now utilised as a function venue for weddings, parties etc. On the right is the beautiful iconic Queenslander “Auchenflower House” where our restaurant is seated on the extensive timber verandah. This is where our “Tamborine Country Farm Tour” commences, taking in the unique history of these homesteads. A short stroll over to “Taabinga Chapel” the original Lutheran church of Kingaroy, to view its beautiful stain glass window and colourful surrounding garden. You will next wander past our farm animals, stopping to say hello and maybe hand feed a carrot or two, the excited miniature donkeys will soon be braying for you to visit and watch them play alongside our miniature horse and pony. Under the shade of an old “lean to” you will then take your seat to enjoy listening to Yvonne’s
story of living on a sheep station. Under Yvonne’s instruction “River” the kelpie will bring in the sheep for you to get a closer look, and maybe a photo or two. To finish the tour, you are welcome to try your hand at Whip cracking or Boomerang throwing before heading back to “Auchenflower House” for lunch, or trying some of our award winning wines. Albert River Wines comprises of over 300 acres of rural land. We have over 20 acres of grape vines which feature six varieties. TOP TOURS FOR 2016
Travellers are always asking Gate 1 Travel which are their most popular tours, so we put the question to their Marketing Manager, Sue Elliot, and she’s got a list of exciting adventures that are hot for 2016. 1. Europe River Cruises OK, no surprises there! Gate 1 Travel’s deluxe European river cruises are $1000s cheaper than other operators, so it’s no wonder their travellers keep coming back for the first class service, fantastic local sightseeing and sensational buffet dinners with unlimited wine and beer. 2016 river cruises on one sale now and look out for Gate 1’s brand new, 5-star MS Monarch Empress. 2. Peru It’s one of the top bucket-list destinations for good reason – few places can rival Machu Picchu for its beauty and mind-blowing construction. Add to that the charming city of Cuzco, getting to know the locals of the Sacred Valley, seeing the awe-inspiring condors swoop over Colca Canyon and enjoying a Pisco Sour (or two) in Lima and you have an unforgettable travel experience. 3. India It’s chaotic and confronting, but wow is India incredible! Your experienced local tour manager will give you the confidence to enjoy this quirky country to the fullest. From its astounding ancient sites to the world’s most famous monument to love, the Taj Mahal, every part of your adventure in India will convince you that exploring this colourful country was one of your best travel decisions ever! 4. South Africa You might think you’ve seen it all, until you see South Africa! My favourite thing about Gate 1’s tours is the combination of culture and wildlife viewing. Where else can you visit the home of the ‘Big Five’ in the morning and learn about Swazi culture in the afternoon? You’ll be lost for words the first time you see an elephant or lion in the wild and it just keeps getting better. Also add Victoria Falls for a real treat! Patellofemoral (Kneecap) Arthritis Kneecap arthritis is a common condition in older active adults and causes pain under or around the kneecap. Kneecap arthritis is aggravated by activities that involve squatting, walking up and down stairs or lunging down onto one leg such as when delivering a bowl. Despite being one of the most common forms of knee arthritis, we do not understand what causes kneecap arthritis, nor do we know the best treatment for it. In younger people under 40 years of age with kneecap pain, our research group in The University of Queensland has shown that good footwear and in some people, foot orthotics, can improve kneecap pain as well as improve balance and lower leg function. To see if similar treatments are effective in those over 40 with kneecap arthritis and pain, we are now conducting two studies at The University of Queensland. The first study will look at how people with kneecap arthritis differ from people of a similar age without kneecap arthritis with regards to leg and foot alignment and leg function. The second study will compare two different types of treatment involving different forms of specialized footwear. The information gained from this study will help guide current treatments to provide better short term improvements in kneecap pain and leg function, and in the longer term may even help slow down arthritic changes in the knee to delay the need for knee replacements.

Health News with Dr Andrew Letchford – Orthopaedic Surgeon It is a well know fact that as we age, parts of our body can begin to cause issues that require further investigation. I think you would all agree that hips and knees are high up on the list of things that start to cause us problems. We had the privilege of discussing this in some detail with one of South East Queensland’s leading orthopaedic surgeons, Dr Andrew Letchford. Dr Letchford, specialises in arthroplasty (joint replacement), knee reconstructions, sports injuries and acute orthopaedic trauma. He implements modern, result focused treatments and is a strong advocate of providing a private call trauma service for patients and GP’s. Some of the most common questions he is asked regularly are; Q: When is the right time to see a specialist about my hips and knees? A: The main indication as to when you should see a specialist is, when your everyday life and activities are impacted by your general mobility. Another clear indication is, when your pain levels are no longer being managed by general nonprescription medication such as paracetamol and anti-inflammatories. Q: Typically hip and knee problems are seen in people in the older age bracket, is this still your experience? A: It is correct that joint degeneration both of hip and knees is a problem that comes with old age, but I am also seeing quite a few younger patients due to greater general focus on exercise to improve health. Q: What are the most common conditions you see in patients? A: The most common complaints that I see on a daily basis are, Hip and knee arthritic pain and knee injuries. I also see and deal with a large number of Trauma cases that come in from the private Emergency departments, with NOF’s (Neck of Femur) and sports fractures being the most common.
Q: What are some of the advancements that have been made in recent years in hip, knee and joint surgery? A: Surgery is quite an exciting field to work in. It is at the cutting edge of modern medicine, and orthopaedics crosses over into fields of engineering and design including robotics and materials. I fully expect that within 12-18 months, I will be using robotic surgery on the Gold Coast. This will allow us unparalleled precision in arthroplasty joint replacement surgery. We will be able to individually size, place and align the prosthetic componentry based on the patient’s own CT scan with micro adjustments of 0.2 of a millimetre. Q: Hip and knee conditions often go untreated, with patients just suffering in silence, what would your suggestions be when pain is no longer able to be managed with non-prescription treatments? A: Patients will frequently avoid dealing with some of their joint issues fearing this will inevitably require surgery. However, there are some nonsurgical options that a good general practitioner can provide advice on. These would include, Physiotherapy, water therapies, Yoga, Pilates, which may aid in discomfort, not all concerns result in surgery. Q: After surgery what is the usual recovery times for patients? A: In simple procedures such as keyhole arthroscopy, patients are admitted for day surgery. It takes two weeks for the wounds to heal, and depending on your circumstances, a return to work or general activities in anywhere from 14 days to 6 weeks is usual. More involved procedures such as, hip or knee replacements require a bigger commitment. Patients can expect to go home five to seven days after surgery, once they have satisfied physiotherapy requirements. Again, it takes two weeks for the wound to heal. By six to twelve weeks most patients are returning to driving their vehicles and normal daily routines. Physiotherapy and set
exercises aid in the patient recovery and are part of the after surgery treatment plan. Q: What advice would you most offer to patients? A: Keep fit! Find something that you suits your lifestyle, you enjoy and, be consistent with it. Should you ultimately be forced to decide upon a surgical option, then the best thing you can do for yourself, your surgeon, anaesthetist and rehab team is to be in the best physical shape you can. Q: Are there particular sports or exercises that a person should avoid if they have knee, hip or joint pain? A: I don’t like to limit people and it really comes down to the individual. A recent study found no evidence that running was correlated with knee arthritis. Nevertheless, I personally feel that my knees don’t like running anymore, but cycling and swimming are fine. Consequently, my exercise regime involves swimming almost every day and doing more non high impact forms of exercise. Walking and cycling are my other forms of regular exercise. The best advice is to listen to your body and when you experience pain, cease the exercise and re assess what you are doing. Dr. Letchford firmly believes in providing a holistic approach to all his patients. Surgery can often be an uncertain and traumatic experience irrespective of age, and Dr. Letchford and his staff strive to ensure that all questions and queries are answered promptly and succinctly to ensure minimum stress to the patient and their family. Dr Letchford currently operates out of Allamanda Private Hospital and Pindara Private Hospital, He consults at his Southport rooms and monthly at the Beaudesert Family Practice. Beaudesert Fair, (Coles) William Street Beaudesert. For more information go to dr-andrew-letchford.com.au or call 07 5527 1818.

Maranoa does regular all-day trips to sunny Stradbroke Island and Romantic Sunset Cruises or you can charter the ship exclusively for your private function. We do all sorts of functions on Maranoa. Hens parties are very popular as are bucks, birthdays, Christmas, corporate lunches, school educational, sail training, weddings and remembrance services. Pirate Parties are always a favorite and we even have our own “Captain Jack, Pirate Magician.” Local entertainer Jack does card tricks and sleight of hand and entertains the crew with his hilarious pirate banter. Jack is available for kid’s or adults parties. Or how about a day cruise to beautiful sub-tropical Stradbroke Island? Maranoa departs stylish Marina Mirage selected mornings for a leisurely calm water cruise under sail to Couran Cove and Tipplers Resort and returns around 4 pm. Hoist the sails, steer the ship and enjoy morning tea or a complimentary drink. See the beautiful sights which include city-scapes and national park bush land. You’ll see wallabies and goannas, beautiful birdlife and perhaps a pod of dolphins will ride the bow wave! You can get off the ship for lunch at snazzy eco resort Couran Cove or laid-back Tipplers Resort, where owner Scott will satisfy your culinary for a very reasonable fare. Jet ski hire, seaplane and speedboat rides are available while you are on the island, or just kick back and work on your tan!

PICTURES OF OZ TAKEN BY A BELGIAN “Before I visited Australia, I had never heard of Uluru! Then I saw a photo of the rock and the stars and decided to try for a shot of Uluru and the full arc of the Milky Way.This image is made up of 25 different shots, a 180 degree panorama with 14mm lens, 2.8 aperture taking 30 seconds: then post-production work in Lightroom and Photoshop, hours of work. I’m very pleased with the end result.”
“This is The Pinnacles in Western Australia. The sunset was breathtaking. It was a full moon night. This day I discovered that on the night of the full moon it rises at exactly the same time as the sun sets. The sunset and moon rising: so exciting!”
“I first visited Uluru in August 2013, but it was raining. So I decided to go back earlier this year for a proper look at the most famous sunrise, sunset and stars in Australia. This is one of the many shots I took.”

HAPPY BIRDS EN HAPPY GARDEN
HARMONY™ No More Waste products are made up of 100% edible seeds that have already been de-hulled. This means that the outer husks the birds normally discard before they eat the seed inside, will no longer be left as a mess on your deck or garden. If seeds do happen to fall and they aren’t scooped up by a ground feeding bird, they won’t be able to germinate and grow in your garden — so your birds and garden will thank you!
