Scott Thulborn is used to success on the world stage…Yet still a humble champion. Cutting and rolling is part of what his week will demand as a bowling club greenskeeper. Great greens are often down to good timing, and he spends a heap of time around the club – this also enables him to get in more practice on the green. And all those extra hours spent looking after and on the grass has resulted in some amazing feats for Thulborn. Recently, Scott was able to enjoy a fairy-tale finish to the 10th annual Asia Pacific Merdeka Championships in Malaysia. “WOW! What a week, what an experience! Very thrilled to be able to head home to Australia with a gold medal!” says Scott after the recent win. With team mates Caloundra’s Bolivia Millerick, St Johns Parks’ Dawn Hayman and Ben Twist, Adelaide’s Scott Thulborn was a fantastic skip and lead by example… “To be able to stand on the podium as they played the Australian Anthem is a moment I will never forget!!” says Scott AKA Scotty T. When asked how he pulled up after the win, Thulborn says “I do have some jet lag but no time for rest it’s straight back to work…” Nicknamed one of Adelaide’s Endurance Players, Scott created history recently becoming the Australian Champion of Champions making him the first player to win back-toback titles. This South Australian’s feat comes after almost 40 straight victories in club singles and champion of champion events across three states over the past two years. “I’m feeling really excited right now and of course really happy to have done my club Adelaide proud,” he said. Thulborn says he was feeling a bit overwhelmed with what he was able to achieve with his recent win. “I’m excited for the challenge of the World Bowls Champion of Champions at Club Helensvale in a months’ time and hope that I can do my country proud on the international stage.” Thulborn will represent Australia again before the end of the year, at Club Helensvale where he will hope to continue his amazing run in singles. “Wow. Aussie champ of champs back to back! It’s what dreams are made of! I will remember this one for life!” says Scotty.

A Missouri farmer passed away and left 17 mules to his three sons. The instructions left in the will said that the oldest boy was to get one-half, the second oldest one-third, and the youngest one-ninth. The three sons, recognizing the difficulty of dividing 17 mules into these fractions, began to argue. Their uncle heard about the argument, hitched up his mule and drove out to settle the matter. He added his mule to the 17, making 18. The oldest therefore got one-half, or nine, the second oldest got one-third, or six, and the youngest son got one-ninth, or two. Adding up 9, 6 and 2 equals 17. The uncle, having settled the argument, hitched up his mule and drove home.

A woman meant to call a record store but dialed the wrong number and got a private home instead. “Do you have ‘Eyes of Blue’ and ‘A Love Supreme’?” she asked. “Well, no,” answered the puzzled homeowner. “But I have a wife and eleven children.” “Is that a record?” she inquired. “I don’t think so,” replied the man, “but it’s as close as I want to get.”

SA/NT National Training Centre Coach Faye Luke, who took the reins as the team’s coach, was complimentary of all team member’s contributions in the gold medal decider at the 16 nation event. The quartet overcame the highly fancied Malaysian A team in the ultimate decider, powering past Siti Zalina Ahmad, Nur Fidrah Noh, Zulhimie Redzuan and Fairul Izwan Muin 21-7 to secure the US$10,000 first-placed prize cheque, with the game cut short of the last end. “Dawn gave us great starts with close consistent bowls, Bolivia Millerick in second played a fantastic game and her best for the tournament, Ben Twist converted, drew, and positioned his bowls with precision and Scott Thulborn was a fantastic skip and lead by example, both on the drive and the draw,” Luke said.

Larue shook his head, he didn’t like it but the groove bowl swooped on Halmai’s shot bowl which just spun around and fell out. Larue’s first bowl was wide, his second ran into short bowls and the jubilant team realised they were the USA fours champions 2015.

“It was a complete team effort and breathtaking to watch. “The Malaysians were completely blown away and their very telling bowls at times were simply out played by our team.” The green and gold representatives also bough two further medals back to Australians shores, with Hayman and Twist each procuring a bronze medal in the blue-ribbon singles disciplines, after narrowly losing their semi-finals. Earlier in the tournament, the mixed pairs combination of Millerick and Thulborn came close to tasting success, but were upended in the quarter-finals. Jackaroos Named for Asia

Pacific Championship Bowls Australia have confirmed the 10 players entrusted with the nation’s hopes at the quadrennial Asia Pacific Championships in New Zealand next month. Bowls Australia has named the 10-strong Jackaroos team to contest next month’s 18-nation Asia Pacific Championships event in New Zealand. The sport’s national selection panel have elected to leave nothing to chance at the quadrennial tournament, which is the Southern Hemisphere’s qualifier event for next year’s coveted World Bowls Championships, naming a star-studded contingent while also affording Cabramatta’s Ray Pearse the opportunity to make his international debut. Pearse, 31, has been a mainstay in the perennial powerhouse NSW Blues state team for a number of years, but only broke into the top tier Australian squad in July following an arduous selection camp on the Gold Coast. Pearse will cut his teeth in the Jackaroos team leading for Club Helensvale’s Nathan Rice in the pairs and slotting into second spot of the fours discipline. While Pearse will be handed his first international cap as Australia’s 141st male representative, on the opposite end of the spectrum, the most prolific international combatant in the nation’s history, Karen Murphy, has not only been granted the chance to add to her impressive record, but will do so in the blue-ribbon women’s singles.

fire-power to both disciplines as the skip. Rounding out the women’s team for the 13-day, 18-nation event is 2014 Australian Open singles and fours champion Anne Johns, also from St Johns Park. In the men’s line-up, three-time Bowls Australia International Bowler of the Year Aron Sherriff has again been tasked with spearheading the blue-ribbon singles discipline, after winning bronze at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, and will also skip the triples contingent. Making up the five-strong men’s team are two reigning world champions in Grange’s Wayne Ruediger and Club Helensvale’s Mark Casey, with Ruediger leading the triples and fours, while Casey slots in as second in the triples and will take the reins as skip of the fours. Australia completed the 2011 version of the tournament with eight medals from as many disciplines as the host nation in the last staging in Adelaide; winning two gold, five silver and a bronze medal, to reaffirm its position as one of the world’s genuine bowls superpowers. It followed up that Asia Pacific Championships success with a historic haul from the sport’s most prestigious event, the World Bowls Championships a year later, with five gold and two silver from eight disciplines to secure the men’s, women’s and overall trophies, and in the process ensured automatic qualification to the 2016 event.

“Pearse will be handed his first international cap as Australia’s 141st male representative”

Murphy, who will notch up her 500th international appearance at the Hong Kong Classic from November 7 to 15, will lead the charge for the women’s outfit in the singles, where she has a proven track record, as the reigning World Bowls Championships singles gold medallist from 2012, and will also guide St Johns Park’s 25 year-old international veteran Kelsey Cottrell in the pairs; who also lines up as second in the fours team.

The 2015 Asia Pacific Championships will be held in Christchurch, New Zealand from November 24 to December 6, staged at Burnside Bowling Club with support from Bowls Papanui, featuring 168 competitors from 18 countries.

Two Glasgow Commonwealth Games competitors, Sunbury’s Carla Odgers and Raymond Terrace’s Natasha Scott, will return to international duties after missing out on the Trans Tasman test series earlier this year.

Women’s team: Singles – Karen Murphy (40, Cabramatta, NSW) Pairs – Kelsey Cottrell (25, St Johns Park, NSW) & Karen Murphy Triples – Carla Odgers (25, Sunbury, VIC), Anne Johns (35, St Johns Park, NSW) & Natasha Scott (24, Raymond Terrace, NSW) Fours – Carla Odgers, Kelsey Cottrell, Anne Johns & Natasha Scott

While neither secured a podium finish in Scotland last year, both have been in scintillating form on the national stage recently having claimed the 2015 Australian Open women’s fours title together - which was just one of many victories for Scott, who took the title of Australia’s number one female bowler at the conclusion of the ranking season following that event. Odgers will lead the triples and fours, while Scott will provide the

Australian Junior Squad Announcement National Coach Steve Glasson OAM and the National Selection Panel confirmed their Australian Junior Squad for 2015-16 after being present at the Australian Under-18 Championships in Canberra this week. After witnessing the country’s most elite go head-to-head in the state vs state format at Tuggeranong Vikings Lawn Bowls Club; the 12 most promising rising stars of the sport have been honoured in front of their peers at the closing ceremony by National Coach Steve Glasson himself, who announced his six girl and six boy squad after three days of amazing bowls by each and every competitor. With intentions of selecting a squad of 10; the quality of bowls seen forced the selectors to extend the squad to 12 with so many talented juniors too hard to split; though it was Victoria that shined the brightest this week with five members of their squad of 10 being selected in the new look Australian Junior squad. Among the stars announced, dual Youth Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jono Davis will spearhead the squad after a sensational international outing in Samoa this month, confirming Davis as Australia’s brightest young star. Davis has continued his dominance in the junior circle having defended his pre-tournament favouritism in the boy’s singles, walking away with his second Australian Under-18 title in as many years. The 14 year-old prodigy is joined by three other junior boys who have retained their spots in the Australian Junior Squad for the second consecutive year; whilst two new faces from Queensland and South Australia will join the boys squad. Victoria’s Joshua Corless (17), whose style of play has been likened to Commonwealth

12 of bowls' brightest young stars have been announced in the 2015-16 Australian Junior Squad after fantastic performances at the Australian Under-18 Games gold medallist and Australian Jackaroo Mark Casey, his Victorian teammate Jayden Christie who picked up bronze in the Australian Under-18 singles and Nic Gosley who won gold and bronze in his fourth Australian Under-18 Championships. The girl’s squad shapes up rather different to last year with four previous members all celebrating 18th birthdays and moving out of the junior ranks; the only girl to retain her spot from last year is 16 year old Tayla Morison (VIC) off the back of a fantastic 12 months; Morison made the Victorian Open Ladies team and received an invitation by National Selectors as one of 20 ladies to trial for this year’s Australian Jackaroos Squad. Making the grade for the first time, Queensland’s Australian Open Singles Champions Jacob Nelson (16) and Sophie Young (15), whose form at the Australian Under-18 Championships has confirmed their status as the leading lights in junior bowls, walking away from the event with 2 golds and one silver medal between them. Queensland’s other golden girl Taleah Putney brings the ‘Sunshine State’ to a total of four Australian Squad members after Putney won two gold medals in the triples and fours this week and caught the attention of National Selectors. Young’s victor for the coveted singles title Tiffany Brodie has earned the call up after a stellar performance this week that has seen her pick up silver in the singles and silver in the triples; whilst her triples team mate Amelia Bruggy will also join the 2015-16 squad.

South Australia’s Joshua Studham is having a week to remember after claiming the only gold medal for SA this week in the boys pairs, Studham will take his place in the new national squad as the sole South Australian to receive the honour. Kate Matthews is flying the flag for New South Wales in the girls squad, following in the footsteps of NSW predecessors Ellen Ryan and Dawn Hayman who have gone on to higher honours since their junior days. Bowls Australia would like to acknowledge those players who have played their final Australian Under-18 Championships here in Canberra and wish them luck in their endeavours in the senior ranks; we wish Michaela Bailey-Nelson, Jesse Herbert, Kate Davis, William Hyatt, and Cindy McGrath the very best. The next international duties of which players from the new Australian Junior Squad will be selected from is the Tran-Tasman in New Zealand in March 2016; this team will be announced in January. The Australian Under-18 Championships came to a stunning conclusion at Tuggeranong Vikings Lawn Bowls Club with the country’s elite junior bowlers capping off a fantastic event with more high quality and high-energy finals this afternoon. Queensland will leave Canberra with the girls, boys and overall trophies in what was a dominating and consistent performance from all 10 of their players across week; however 60 medals have been handed out at these championships and six State and Territories shared the honours.

Queensland claimed the boys, girls and overall state champion trophies at the Australian Under-18 Championships in what was one of the best supported and most successful events ever held in the nations capital

MAROONS DOMINATION

NSW’s Jono Davis has continued his hot streak of form collecting another prestigious gold medal this year to go with the two he bagged at the recent Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa. In the boys singles Davis was too good for Queenslander Dale WcWhinney-Shillington who entered the match off the back of a strong performance that won him bronze in the boys pairs; Davis never dropped more than two shots on any end in the match and after getting out to a 12-6 lead, Davis kept his nose in front for the rest of the match winning the final 21-15. The Northern Territory was contesting their only gold medal match in the girls pairs but unfortunately history couldn’t be created

today with the strong NSW outfit of Madeline Goncalves and Molly Wilton defeating Kerri-Ann Zavazal and Shae Smith 24-12. The victory in the pairs was the only gold for the NSW girls at these championships; however their triples combination of Cindy McGrath, Kate Matthews and Kate Davis claimed bronze against Western Australia 21-15 this afternoon. Queensland girls continued their dominance on the competition notching up another gold medal in the girls triples to accompany their gold in the singles and fours. With two ends to play Queensland was

trailing by one but a full count of six on the second last end put them in a commanding position; Victoria picked up two on the last end but it wasn’t enough to chase down the maroons in yet another finals victory. Victoria was able to claim revenge in the girls pairs with Mikayla Long and Tayla Morison defeating Sophie Young and Tiffany Murray 18-7 in the bronze medal match.

In the boys fours Queensland dropped the last three ends of the match to NSW however the lead they had established in the middle stages of the match was enough to keep the maroons in front; Mitchell Mears, Hayden Vogler and Jacob Nelson picked up their second gold medal these championships whilst Nic Gosley added to his bronze from the boys pairs. Northern Territory had another crack for a medal this event however the Victorian boys fours combination of Todd Trewarne, Jordan Yates, Curtis Hanley and Joshua Corless had a different idea claiming the second bronze medal for the Victorian boys this Australian Under-18 Championships. Victoria’s Jayden Christie was victorious over Tasmania’s Mitchell Banks 21-10 in their bronze medal play-off in the boys singles.

Flapper calls an end to international career Matthew Flapper is hanging up the boots on a wonderful international career to spend more time with family and friends and concentrate on his role at Ocean Grove Bowling Club Matthew Flapper announced his retirement from the Australian Jackaroos Squad in October, bringing to an end what has been a fantastic career for the much loved Australian star. Flapper, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist with 72 international appearances under his belt, has left a lasting legacy on his Australian teammates as one of the most respected players of his era. Flapper made his international debut in the 2012 Asia Pacific Merdeka International alongside Dylan Fisher, Carla Odgers and Claire Turley and after years of hard work and dedication Flapper’s greatest achievement came at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he skipped the men’s fours to bronze. The Victorian representative has led the Australian Jackaroos to many a victory during his time skipping for his nation and can walk away from international competition proud of his achievements whilst donning on the green and gold. Words of support have come in thick and fast from his Australian Jackaroos teammates expressing how much Flapper will be missed in the green and gold and as a popular member of the team. Australian Jackaroos Captain Lynsey Clarke shared her memories of Matthew Flapper and wished him well post-Australian representation.

Aussie’s out on the green. “I still remember how awesome it was hearing you cheer out for the first time during your first Trans-Tasman in New Zealand, that voice! “Congratulations on everything you have accomplished.” “What a true gentleman; Matt took me under his wing on my first trip with the Australian contingent to New Zealand, this is something that I will never forget and Matt will continue to be a player that I look up too, what a competitor,” said Ray Pearse. “We will absolutely miss having you around the squad mate, over the past few years you certainly brought something special to the men’s squad; I loved playing every minute alongside you and you should be very proud of your achievements,” said Mark Casey. “Matt you have been a wonderful representative for Australia, a true ambassador for our country and our sport and a great friend to all, you will be missed,” said Australian Assistant Coach Gary Willis. National Coach Steve Glasson OAM says Matthew can be extremely proud of all he has done and contributed in his time at the top of our sport. “Please accept my heartiest congratulations on all you have achieved on and off the green, we will miss you,” said Glasson. “Flappers brought his personal touch to the team, from his highly competitive nature, his desire to always put the team first, his love and honour of the green and gold, his wicked sense of humour and let’s not forget his ‘savage’ collection of funds at team fine sessions.”

“Matt’s contribution to the Australian team and its culture over the years has been huge and will be sorely missed,” Clarke said.

Ocean Grove Bowling Club has been an incredible support to Flapper in his endeavours to represent Australia; this was evident when they hosted the Australia vs Malaysia test series in 2013 and prepared their greens to replicate the slow Northern Hemisphere greens in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

“Not only will we miss your on green ability and presence but that loud booming voice we all love hearing in support of all the

Bowls Australia congratulate Aaron Teys on his elevation to the Australian Jackaroos Squad.

Warilla’s Aaron Teys has been confirmed as a late inclusion in the Australian Jackaroos Squad for 2015/16, following a stunning showing at the national high performance selection camp in New Zealand last week. Teys, 21, thoroughly impressed National Coach Steve Glasson and his selectors during the gruelling six-day camp, which was used to trial 21 players on the surface and in the conditions of next month’s 18-nation Asia Pacific Championships event in Christchurch. Despite not being named as one of the five male competitors chosen to don the green and gold uniform at the New Zealand event from November 24 to December 6, Teys did more than enough to prove he has what it takes to mix it with the best in the business and has been formally promoted to the ranks of the nation’s top high performance tier, the Australian Jackaroos Squad, elevated from the NSW National Training Centre Squad. The apprentice greenkeeper not only dazzled at the selection camp, but has been in scintillating form at some of the sport’s biggest events in recent months, including winning the nation’s most coveted title, the Australian Open’s $16,000 blue-ribbon men’s singles crown, a semi-final finish to eventual winner Jeremy Henry at the $30,000 Australian Indoor Championships, and a stellar performance at the $60,000 National 5 A Side to help guide his Warilla Gorillas contingent to a historic third title. “It is with much pleasure that I advise the promotion of Aaron Teys to being a formal member of the Jackaroos Squad,” Glasson said. “Aaron has demonstrated he has the ability and determination to be an official member of Australia’s elite and through continued persistence and work ethic, will hopefully one day get the opportunity to represent his country in competition.” Teys joins the 20 player Jackaroos team as the youngest current male member, but alongside a host of fresh blood in a new-look contingent that was announced in July, including Ellen Ryan, 18, Kristina Krstic, 21, Aaron Wilson, 23, Max Kleinig, 26, and Ray Pearse, 31. And would definitely encourage smaller Clubs to combine with another Club to make up a team of eight. Geoff sees this competition as one that Club Managements will find exciting and cost effective to enter. With the benefits of reduced travel, an even mix of home and away games, entry fees recouped in green fees, prize money for rink wins and it caters for the smaller clubs. Expressions of interest have already been received from several clubs including -Mooloolaba, Buderim, Caloundra, Pelican Waters, Nambour, Gympie and Maleny but would welcome entries from other clubs as well. WHAT CHANGES HAS YOUR LOCAL CLUB MADE?

Maroubra Sports Club is getting creative with its bowling greens, using the the space for a kids’ activity group. WITH a “fuddy duddy” reputation and dwindling numbers of competitive players, the state’s lawn bowling clubs having to become creative to attract paying customers. Childcare centres, putt-putt golf greens, gyms, remote control car tracks and community gardens are just some of the new uses bowling clubs are finding for their pristine bowling greens. This remote control car rally track at Cobar Memorial Services and Bowling Club used to be the lawn bowls green. Mr Ball said there has been an ¬increase in the number of casual “barefoot” bowlers who come in for bucks parties or corporate events. But many country clubs don’t have access to those customers and are also stung by high water prices. “Bowling is seen as a game for grandparents and fuddy duddies, and it needs to shake off that image,” Mr Ball said. “People who played bowls are now playing golf or driving around the country as grey nomads. “There is a lot more attention for people’s time than there was in the 1950s. The challenge now is to adapt or die.” Twenty nine of the state’s bowling clubs have closed or amalgamated in the past five years, with clubs forking out an average of $70,000 every year to maintain one bowling green. The exorbitant costs have led many clubs to keep one green for players and develop two others. (The Luftwaffe had B-17’s of its own, shot down and rebuilt for secret missions and training.) Stigler escorted the bomber over the North Sea and took one last look at the American Pilot. Then he saluted him, peeled his fighter away and returned to Germany. “Good luck,” Stigler said to himself. “You’re in God’s hands now...” Franz Stigler didn’t think the big B-17 could make it back to England and wondered for years what happened to the American Pilot and crew he encountered in combat. Luftwaffe Major Franz Stigler

WHAT A STORY There is a wonderful book called “A Higher Call” about this TRUE story below. The 21-year old American B-17 pilot glanced outside his cockpit and froze. He blinked hard and looked again, hoping it was just a mirage. But his Co-Pilot stared at the same horrible vision. “My God, this is a nightmare,” the Co-Pilot said. “He’s going to destroy us,” the Pilot agreed. The men were looking at a gray German Messerschmitt fighter hovering just three feet off their wingtip. It was five days before Christmas 1943, and the fighter had closed in on their crippled American B-17 bomber for the kill.

nodded at Brown and saluted. What happened next was one of the most remarkable acts of chivalry recorded during World War Il . Stigler pressed his hand over the rosary he kept in his flight jacket. He eased his index finger off the trigger. He couldn’t shoot. It would be murder. Stigler wasn’t just motivated by vengeance that day. He also lived by a code. He could trace his Family’s Ancestry to Knights in 16th Century Europe. He had once studied to be a Priest. A German Pilot who spared the enemy, though, risked death in Nazi Germany. If someone reported him, he would be executed. Yet, Stigler could also hear the voice of his commanding officer, who once told him: “You follow the rules of war for you -- not your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity.” Alone with the crippled bomber, Stigler

Brown’s Crippled B-17 Stalked by Stigler’s ME-109 The B-17 Pilot, Charles Brown, was a 21-year-old West Virginia farm boy on his first combat mission. His bomber had been shot to pieces by swarming fighters, and his plane was alone, struggling to stay in the skies above Germany. Half his crew was wounded, and the tail gunner was dead, his blood frozen in icicles over the machine guns. But when Brown and his Co-Pilot, Spencer “Pinky” Luke, looked at the Fighter Pilot again, something odd happened. The German didn’t pull the trigger. He stared back at the bomber in amazement and respect. Instead of pressing the attack, he 20 BOWLS PLUS NEW SOUTH WALES OCT/NOV/DEC 2015

As he watched the German fighter peel away that December day, 2nd Lt. Charles Brown wasn’t thinking of the philosophical connection between enemies. He was thinking of survival. He flew his crippled plane, filled with wounded, back to his base in England and landed with one of four engines knocked out, one failing and barely any fuel left. After his bomber came to a stop, he leaned back in his chair and put a hand over a pocket Bible he kept in his flight jacket. Then he sat in silence. Brown flew more missions before the war ended. Life moved on. He got married, had two Daughters, supervised foreign aid for the U.S. State Department during the Vietnam War and eventually retired to Florida. Late in life, though, the encounter with the German Pilot began to gnaw at him. He started having nightmares, but in his dream there would be no act of mercy. He would awaken just before his bomber crashed. Brown took on a new mission. He had to find that German Pilot. Who was he? Why

did he save my life? He scoured Military Archives in the U.S. and England. He attended a Pilots’ Reunion and shared his story. He finally placed an ad in a German Newsletter for former Luftwaffe Pilots, retelling the story and asking if anyone knew the Pilot. On January 18, 1990, Brown received a letter. He opened it and read: “Dear Charles, All these years I wondered what happened to that B-17, did she make it home? Did her crew survive their wounds? To hear of your survival has filled me with indescribable joy...” It was Stigler. He had left Germany after the war and moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1953. He became a prosperous Businessman. Now retired, Stigler told Brown that he would be in Florida come summer and “it sure would be nice to talk about our encounter.” Brown was so excited, though, that he couldn’t wait to see Stigler. He called Directory Assistance for Vancouver and asked whether there was a number for a Franz Stigler. He dialed the number, and Stigler picked up. “My God, it’s you!” Brown shouted as tears ran down his cheeks. Brown had to do more. He wrote a letter to Stigler in which he said: “To say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU on behalf of my surviving crew members and their families appears totally inadequate.” The two Pilots would meet again, but this time in person, in the lobby of a Florida hotel. One of Brown’s Friends was there to record the Summer Reunion. Both men looked like retired businessmen: they were plump, sporting neat ties and formal shirts. They fell into each other’ arms and wept and laughed. They talked about their encounter in a light, jovial tone. The mood then changed. Someone asked Stigler what he thought about Brown. Stigler sighed and his square jaw tightened. He began to fight back tears before he said in heavily accented English: “I love you, Charlie.”

Brown and Stigler became pals. They would take fishing trips together. They would fly cross-country to each other homes and take road trips together to share their story at schools and Veterans’ Reunions. Their Wives, Jackie Brown and Hiya Stigler, became Friends. Brown’s Daughter says her Father would worry about Stigler’s health and constantly check in on him. “It wasn’t just for show,” she says. “They really did feel for each other. They talked about once a week.” As his friendship with Stigler deepened, something else happened to her father, Warner says “The nightmares went away.” Brown had written a letter of thanks to Stigler, but one day, he showed the extent of his gratitude. He organized a reunion of his surviving crew members, along with their extended families. He invited Stigler as a Guest of Honor. During the Reunion, a video was played showing all the faces of the people that now lived -- Children, Grandchildren, Relatives -- because of Stigler’s act of Chivalry. Stigler watched the film from his Seat of Honor. “Everybody was crying, not just him,”

Warner says. Stigler and Brown died within months of each other in 2008. Stigler was 92, and Brown was 87. They had started off as Enemies, became Friends, and then something more. After he died, Warner was searching through Brown’s library when she came across a book on German fighter jets. Stigler had given the book to Brown. Both were country boys who loved to read about planes. Warner opened the book and saw an inscription Stigler had written to Brown: In 1940, I lost my only brother as a night fighter. On the 20th of December, 4 days before Christmas, I had the chance to save a B-17 from her destruction, a plane so badly damaged, it was a wonder that she was still flying. The Pilot, Charlie Brown, is for me as precious as my Brother was. Thanks Charlie. Your Brother, Franz By Les Taylor Banora Point Bowls Club

Stigler had lost his Brother, his Friends and his Country. He was virtually exiled by his Countrymen after the war. There were 28,000 Pilots who fought for the German Air Force. Only 1,200 survived. The war cost him everything. Charlie Brown was the only good thing that came out of World War II for Franz. It was the one thing he could be proud of. The meeting helped Brown as well, says his oldest daughter, Dawn Warner. They met as enemies but Franz Stigler, on left, and Charles Brown, ended up as fishing buddies. – a single card that lets you travel on public transport across the greater Sydney area. It’s so popular that around 3.8 million cards have been issued, including more than 450,000 Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal cards. That’s why from 1 January 2016 the majority of paper tickets won’t be sold. The number of people buying paper tickets has fallen rapidly and we’re moving towards a single, smarter system. The Pensioner Excursion Ticket is one of those paper tickets going. If you normally use one to travel on public transport it’s time to switch to the Gold Opal card. Just like the Pensioner Excursion Ticket, the Gold Opal card lets you travel across the entire network for a maximum of just $2.50 a day. That means you can enjoy a day out in the Blue Mountains, head down to Kiama, or catch the iconic Manly ferry and never pay more than $2.50. I speak to a lot of older residents in my job and I know some are concerned about the phasing out of Pensioner Excursion Tickets. I want to reassure everyone that the Gold Opal is more convenient, cheaper, and easy to use. It’s simple to apply for a Gold Opal card and you don’t need the internet

or a credit card. Just make sure you have your NSW Seniors, Pensioner Concession or NSW War Widow/er card handy to confirm your eligibility. Once your application is complete your card will be mailed to you in five to seven working days – and you’re all set to travel.

If you use public transport regularly you can select the auto top-up and it will automatically draw the amount you have selected from your credit or debit card when you balance gets low. You will always have enough value on your card to travel. Or you can top up at one of 2,000 Opal retailers located across Sydney and regions for as little as $2.50 in cash. You can apply over the phone by calling Opal customer care on 13 67 25 (13 OPAL.) If you do have internet access you can also apply online at www.opal.com.au

And don’t forget that the popular Country Pensioner Excursion Ticket will still be available from next year. These tickets offer one-way trips within regional NSW only for just $2.50 – another great deal. NEW SOUTH WALES BOWLS PLUS OCT/NOV/DEC 2015 23

#MAKEAMOVE FOR A GOOD CAUSE Arthritis and Osteoporosis Victoria is calling on people to “dance like nobody is watching” and get involved in their #makeamove dance challenge which is as easy as 1, 2, 3… 1. Make a video of yourself dancing (or you and your friends) 2. Upload it to social media 3. Post a message: I challenge (friend

1) and (friend 2) to #makeamove within 48 hours or donate to www.makeamove.org.au Why dance? With no cure for osteoporosis, arthritis and other muscle, bone and joint conditions, often the best advice for prevention and treatment is exercise. • Dance safely. Know your condition. Know your limitations • Dancing has both physical and mental benefits • Dancing increases muscular strength, flexibility and endurance • Dancing makes you smarter! It increases levels of serotonin in your brain which gives you a feeling of wellbeing • You can dance with a group, a partner or on your own like nobody’s watching An hour of vigorous dancing (think quickstep, not waltz) can burn up to 500 to 700 calories depending on your height, weight and fitness level. And it’s a lot more fun than trudging along on

Choosing a retirement home can be challenging, there are so many options and the costs involved are substantial. Now there is an easy solution in making such a large and important decision on choosing the right retirement home option. A NSW company provides a retirement home option that has no weekly or exit fees, is close to family members, gives you the flexibility to relocate and has prices starting from only $69,990 for a fully self-contained 1 bedroom home. VanHomes Sales Pty Ltd company founder, Vito Russo saw a need for an alternative to what was currently available for retirement home options when looking at retirement home options for his nan. Having done the rounds of visiting numerous retirement homes and villages he was quickly disheartened by the upfront cost and ongoing fees combined with the distance where the homes and villages were from where he was living. While the thought of building a granny flat in his back yard had occurred to him, the council red tape was a nightmare. Then there was the advice from a real estate mate who advised him that if he ever wanted to sell his property, having a granny flat in the back yard would

limit the potential buyers of his property and its value. Further investigation by Vito saw him come across a NSW Local Government Act that would allow an innovative type of retirement living option on his property with out the need for council building application. This unique home would also give him the flexibility to easily relocate the home should circumstance change in the future. Needless to say that the rest is history as the concept has taken off all over NSW with Retirees and Grey Nomads loving the simplicity of having their 35sqm to 60sqm retirement home or granny flat delivered to the backyard of a family member with the flexibility to easily relocate it at a later stage should their circumstance change. While the simplicity and flexibility of an Easy Retirement Home is clear, what is really putting a smile on the many VanHomes customer’s faces is the money they are saving in the presence of knowing they have more money to spend on enjoying life. By the age of 85 one in two Australians will have been diagnosed with cancer Australian Institute of health and Welfare (AIHW). It’s a sobering statistic, and one which means that in our lifetime we will all be touched by cancer. Whether personally, or through loved ones – no one is immune. We all want a cancer free future for our loved ones Which makes Cancer Council NSW so determined to find better treatments and management for cancer patients and their loved ones. Gordana recalls when her mum, Anica, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001. “I remember how hard it was for mum when the doctors told her she would need a mastectomy and would lose her right breast. It wasn’t just about her appearance, for her it was a connection to motherhood as well.” Luckily Anica received world class support from Cancer Council NSW, and lived out her life cancer free. “The support that mum, and our whole family received during that time and afterward was incredible. It blew us away. If it weren’t for the support in place Mum’s story would have been so different.” ”When Mum recovered and decided to leave a financial gift to the Cancer Council in her will, our whole family agreed with her choice. It was her chance to give back to a community that had given her a new chance at life.” Gordana could not be more proud of Anica’s decision to leave a bequest to Cancer Council NSW. “I want to encourage you, just like mum did, to talk to the Cancer Council about leaving a gift in your will and living on in the fight against cancer”. What are stem cells? Our bodies are made up of many different types of human cells. If cells die in any one of these areas, new cells are needed to replace them. In these situations the cells that are responsible for creating new cells are ‘stem cells’ or otherwise known as ‘regenerative stem cells’. Stem cells are cells that have the ability to differentiate into specific cells such as muscle cells, skin cells or organ tissue cells. Stem cells have the ability to repair and regenerate at the site of injury. Stem Cell Function • Injury Healing Function – Stem cells travel to the site of injury and replace the damaged cells. • Blood Supply Function – Stem cells create blood vessels that are needed to supply nutrients and oxygen. • Immunomodulatory Function – Stem Cells can differentiate into immune cells to assist in the regulation of the immune system. • Activation of surrounding cells – Depending on the type of secretion produced by the stem cell, different types of cells are activated. Advantages of Stem Cell Treatment • Due to the use of the patients own cells, there will not be adverse reactions . • The process of regeneration and pain relief is fast. • It is a much safer treatment than other surgeries as it has reduced level of the likely hood of infections or allergic reactions. • The natural effects of the treatment will last from 6 months to a year. • It can be used to treat various different joints and also can be used to repair knee cartilage injuries. • After the treatment you can carry on with your everyday activities from the next day. • The synergy effect increases when it is implemented with other treatments. • It is very cost efficient as it doesn’t require expensive surgery fees. • Adult stem cell therapy does not cause cancer.

Advancements in Total Knee Replacement, Science over Speculation by Belinda Bosley RN, PNSA Total knee replacement (TKR) surgery is regarded as a very safe and very successful procedure, enabling patients to return to a high quality of life following relief from the symptomatic pain and loss of function associated with degenerative joint disease. This surgery was first performed in 1968; so long-term survivorship of implants is now well established in the literature, as outcome studies have shown very low incidences of failure post surgery. The challenge is to now improve on already good results and try to match high patient expectations following TKR.

Belinda Bosley is a Registered Nurse who first starting working in operating theatres in 1992. Since 2011 Belinda has been working exclusively in the field of hip and knee surgery as well as a specialized osseointegration surgery for amputees..

Today we can categorize patients into two groups the “young elderly” (65 – 75 years) and the “old elderly” (over 75yrs)2. In times gone by, TKR patients were generally satisfied with a painless joint that could bend to 90deg. Whilst the old elderly may continue to be satisfied with this, the expectation of today’s active “young elderly” having TKR is not just a pain free joint but also returning to functional lives including sports activities such as golf, cycling and swimming. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in 1999 approximately 30% of TKR were performed on patients younger than 65 years. In 2008 this has increased to 41%. Overall the trend for the “young elderly” undergoing TKR is escalating. The aim of TKR is to provide a patient with a functional, pain free joint. To achieve this it is essential to restore four biomechanical aspects: 1. Mechanical axis 2. Joint Line 3. Patella Tracking 4. Ligamentous Balancing Although knee surgery is a very successful operation on

average around 1 in 5 patients report sub optimal results in relation to post-operative pain and function . Patient satisfaction is an important outcome measure, as it has a direct correlation to a patient’s ability to perform normal day-to-day tasks and leisure activities. If functional outcomes can be improved, what role can new technologies and implant designs play in improving overall patient satisfaction? In my opinion the outcome of TKR is dependant on three elements: 1. The Patient: Timing is crucial. Ideally surgery should be considered necessary when the knee joint disease is adversely effecting the patient’s quality of life and before their general health deteriorates to a point where their recovery from the surgery can be compromised (not too early, not too late). Waiting for the complete destruction of the knee joint is unnecessary, may compromise the outcome of the surgery and the patient’s future quality of life. 2. Surgeon: Skill set and experience 3. Technology: Implant design and techniques Since 1968, TKR technique and technology has evolved. Historically the restoration of the knee joint line and the mechanical axis could be achieved by using the surgeon’s sight, skill and manual instrumentation. Over the last ten years we have seen the introduction of Computer Assisted Surgery systems to navigate alignment of TKR’s. More recently Patient Specific Instrumentation (PSI) has been introduced, which utilizes CT or MRI imaging to produce patient specific cutting blocks for the same purpose.

Fig 1. AOA Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, Annual Report, 2014

In isolation while these technologies have been shown to improve accuracy of alignment in certain patients, they have provided no real improvements in overall survivorship of total knee replacements NEW SOUTH WALES BOWLS PLUS OCT/NOV/DEC 2015 35

PSI cutting blocks have an advantage of cutting down surgical time and instrumentation. Mechanical alignment instrumentation can achieve reasonable ligamentous balancing as well as satisfactory patella tracking. For improved functional performance the importance of obtaining good soft tissue and gap balancing in TKR surgery has also been well documented. Failure to achieve this can lead to either early revision or reduced performance of the joint. This is well illustrated by lower patient satisfaction when undertaking tasks such as ascending or descending stairs or getting out of a car or chair.

There is a technological solution to solve this conundrum, as we are now able to assess very accurately these important gapbalancing measurements with the latest Computer Assisted Surgery software platform. It is now possible to combine two important areas of total knee replacement surgery to ensure accuracy of alignment with the functional benefits of ensuring good soft tissue and ligament balance. It has been shown that the computerized gap balancing technique may result in better stability of the knee joint, which suggests improvements in the overall functional performance of TKR7. We believe that this is a positive and assured step forward in our pursuit to make every TKR patient, a very functional and satisfied patient. To conclude, Australian Orthopaedic trainees are fortunate to be exposed to all modalities of TKR surgical techniques. In my personal experience I have found that the use of computerizednavigation kneereplacement with ligamentous

balancing provides reproducible results and high patient satisfaction. Since 2011 Belinda has worked with Munjed Al Muderis, Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor with The Notre Dame University, School of Medicine, Sydney. He is an Australian trained Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in anterior hip replacement surgery; hip arthroscopy, computer navigated total knee replacement surgery, knee reconstruction and knee arthroscopy. He has a special interest in osseointegration surgery for amputees for which he is internationally known.

HEALtH NEwS witH Dr PAvitAr SuNNEr - OrtHOPAEDic SurGEON As we age, wear and tear can affect different parts of our body causing problems with mobility. In particular, I see many patients who are experiencing problems with their hips and knees. In my Sydney based practice, I also see many cases of musculoskeletal injuries resulting from sports injuries. I employ modern, minimally invasive treatments that are focused on providing long-term results for my patients. Some of the most common questions asked by my patients include: Q: When should I visit an Orthopaedic specialist about my hips and knees? A: It is a good idea to see an Orthopaedic Specialist if • Joint or musculoskeletal pain begins after you have experienced an injury • Experiencing progressive hip or knee pain that is worse with weight bearing • Joint pain is severe and interfering with function • Suffering moderate or advanced arthritis of the knee or hip • Previous treatment for joint pain has been unsuccessful – including the use of anti-inflammatory medication or paracetamol • Advice from General Practitioner. Q: Is it unusual to see younger patients with hip and knee problems? A: While hip and knee joint degeneration tend to occur with age, I also see many younger patients who partake in regular and intense sporting activities. Q: What are the most common conditions you treat in your practice? A: While I treat a wide variety of problems, I tend to see a larger concentration of patients requiring hip or knee replacements, arthroscopic shoulder reconstructions as well as knee reconstructions or arthroscopies.

Q: Can you explain some of the recent advancements in hip, knee and joint surgery? A: Surgery is an exciting field to work in and is at the forefront of modern medicine. As an Orthopaedic Surgeon, I appreciate the synergy between engineering and design including robotics and materials. I have a particular interest in computer-assisted navigation to improve the surgical performance and clinical outcome of knee replacement surgery. Q: Before considering surgery for hip, knee or shoulder conditions, what can someone do to try to alleviate pain? A: Surgery often be seen as a last resort treatment option. Before going down this path, a patient can try over the counter medication such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, have a cortisone-type shot or a jointlubricating fluid injected into the affected area. In some cases, weight loss may be an option or activity modification and sometimes, the use of a cane or a brace can help. Physiotherapy, water therapies, Yoga or Pilates can also be trialed to alleviate discomfort. Q: What is considered to be a usual recovery time for a patient who undergoes surgery? A: Recovery will depend on the type of procedure required. Where it is an appropriate option, I will always opt to use keyhole procedures as this tends to result in great outcomes for the patient with minimal down time. Generally, this procedure will require a day surgery and the patient will require two weeks for the wounds to heal, and depending on your circumstances, a return to work or general activities in anywhere from 14 days to 6 weeks is usual. More complex procedures (hip or knee replacements) will require patients to stay in hospital for five to seven days after surgery and meet physiotherapy requirements before going home. The wounds will require about two weeks for the wound to heal. By six to twelve weeks post operation, most patients will commence normal daily activities. Patients will be given a physiotherapy and exercise routine to aid in recovery.

Q: What is the best advice you can give a patient? A: Maintain as much mobility as possible – look for exercise options that you enjoy and fit into your lifestyle. Equally as important, is maintaining a healthy weight to avoid putting excess pressure on your joints. If a surgical option is your best chance to improve your quality of life then understand what will happen. Ask questions of your surgeon so that you are comfortable with the process and follow up care – know how the surgery will impact you and be prepared. Q: Are there particular sports or exercises that a person should avoid if they have knee, hip or joint pain? A: As with most things in life, it is important to listen to your body. If a particular exercise results in the patient experiencing pain – they should stop and determine that they are using correct posture and body placement. Generally most people should be able to partake in walking, cycling and swimming without pain. These are always good “go to” options. It may be best to avoid jarring and high impact forms of exercise if you are experiencing localised pain – again, yoga and pilates are a great way to keep moving. Dr. Sunner cares about each patient’s individual needs and will work with you to ensure you heal properly. As a skilled orthopaedic surgeon, he specialises in the following areas for patients of Sydney: • Knee • Hips • Sports Medicine

• Shoulders • Joints

He consults at Penrith, Baulkham Hills, Merrylands, Liithgow, Katoomba and Narellan. His friendly staff are always happy to help and take your calls. For appointments call 02 4731 8466 or click on the online appointment form at www.westernorthopaedics.com.au.

HAPPY BIRDS EN HAPPY GARDEN

HARMONY™ No More Waste products are made up of 100% edible seeds that have already been de-hulled. This means that the outer husks the birds normally discard before they eat the seed inside, will no longer be left as a mess on your deck or garden. If seeds do happen to fall and they aren’t scooped up by a ground feeding bird, they won’t be able to germinate and grow in your garden — so your birds and garden will thank you!
