X Factor for Lawn Bowls Part 1 I am not aware of any other competitive sports in Australia that have as many formats, and modifications applying to our game following the 90s? Because of that situation I was appointment as special project officer for the RNSWBA to create the lawn bowls manual to minimise the diabolical situation we now find ourselves in right now. As I was already engaged in a similar full-time job in the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) at that time, I suggested that featuring such material for a proposed Bowls Manual may best be included in the current NSW bowls Magazine to be titled (“Innovations”) that featured during 1991 to 1992 but later on scraped due to the channel vision of some delegates at that time. However during 2002 “The Innovator” column was established by the broad vision of the editor of the “ON THE GREEN” magazine in Newcastle, for the past 14 years currently submitting innovations to that magazine right now in 2016. Membership, and critical issues relating to the credibility of our game, the development of various formats to enrich our game, and addressing the much appreciated feedback form the bowlers and readers to achieve those objectives must continue. Therefore I must clearly state that my interest and objectives associated with my articles written and spoken about in seminars, have and will always be dedicated the well-being and future of our wonderful game! However most of my long term readers well know that although I was engaged to create innovations long ago, coping with unabated plagerisation of my key innovations, my immediate vision right now is for the long-term viability of our game. The simple fact is that lawn bowls has accumulated more ways of playing our game putting aside the heart and soul of our game for the past 41 years. Therefore for the record new and recent readers of my innovation columns, need to know that my first lawn bowls innovative format called “Match Bowls” was submitted to the RNSWBA on 10 May 1973 took several months to receive a reply. On the 27 May 1975 my World Series Bowls pilot was conducted at the City Bowling Club for interested bowlers and head office members of the Royal New South Wales bowling Association, and later that night featured on the ABCs “Sports Night” program on TV. Following the request to fine tune that presentation and to seek a sponsor, “Powerplay International Limited” officially agreed to produce and fund the World Series competition on 29 October 1985. Unfortunately that series was canned at short notice by Bowls Australia in Victoria and the New South Wales Bowling Associations at the most critical while the players’ entries to this series were being processed and finalized. That and the earlier submissions clearly set out in my innovation columns were plagiarized, creating a massive lost opportunity to develop such an essential platform for the well-being and future of our game, ripe for TV programming and development for all future bowls programs into the future. Because of the positive reactions following the TV pilots displayed on air leading up to World Series Bowls, I developed Super Bowl following a number of pilot’s and put them to the test conducting two Super Bowl competitions over three months during 2006 and 2007 at the Landings Bowling Green watched by over 60 residents and visitors attending the series from April to June every week during the series. Invitations to all the Zone Nine Bowling Clubs in Sydney provided the players for the above series fully funded by the Landings. Following the two Super Bowl series the exit researches were higher than expected supporting the need to press on to achieve a time spot for that series on television. The end result was that the Almighty dollar and obstacles inhibited the development of key program features and the application of the coloured bowls, uniforms and special rules introduced to optomise the credibility, image, and performance so necessary for the well-being of our game overall. AT THE AGE OF 91, YOU MIGHT CONSIDER YOUR SPORTING PRIME WELL AND TRULY OVER, BUT THEN YOU PROBABLY HAVE NOT MET DAISY BARNES. One of the oldest competitive lawn bowlers in South Australia, the Naracoorte RSL Bowling Club player is a regular fixture on the club's honours board, winning plenty of competitions during her nearly 40 years on the green.
another seven years, and jokes that the pennant win may be her swansong.
But the holy grail of competitive lawn bowls — a club pennant — had eluded Daisy, until one week ago.
"What would I do if I didn't bowl?" she laughs. "I enjoy the game, the company and I go to enjoy the day and if you win, that's just a bonus."
Soundly whipping their competitors, Daisy and the Naracoorte RSL ladies team won the grand final of Division 3 bowls, ending a 19-year losing streak for the club. "It was a big thrill," Daisy said modestly, unable to stop a big smile spreading across her face. "I've had a few good things happen in my bowls career but this one is very special. We were delighted." Daisy said she was hooked the first time she tried lawn bowls more than four decades ago. Age is purely a number for the spritely lady, who gets about the green like a woman decades younger. Despite a few "undercover complaints" as Daisy calls them, she puts her good health and longevity down to simple genetics. "The genes are in the family," she said. "One of my cousins in Robe is still bowling at 93."
There are plenty of up and coming players to take her place, with the club's youngest member just 9 years old.

Can Victoria take the record from South Australia? Women visiting a pet shop saw a beautiful parrot for $50 Why so little? She asked the owner Owner replied I should tell you the parrot came from a house if ill repute and often says some pretty vulgar words But the women bought the parrot and took it home anyway and waited it to speak the parrot said ‘new house new madam’’, although a bit shocked by the implication she thought not really that bad! Her two teenage daughters arrived home shortly after and the bird saw them and said ‘new house, new girls, new madam ‘ Both the women and the girls were a little offended but laughed it off.
Up for the age record?
A later that day, her husband came in to the room and the parrot looked at him and said ‘Harry haven’t seen you her for a while.!
Daisy is not the oldest lawn bowls player in the state — that title belongs to a 98-year-old man from Port Lincoln. But she is not sure whether she will be bowling in

National rankings race heating up With clock ticking down to the Australian Open, contenders for Australian Male and Female Bowler of the Year are starting to emerge It’s the who’s who of Australian bowls currently residing at the top of the Women’s National Rankings; however it’s last year’s champion and current Australian Jackaroo Natasha Scott still the one to beat in the race to be crowned Australia's Female Bowler of the Year. Natasha Scott is soaring ahead of the field as she aims for the second consecutive top of the table finish; whilst in the men’s rankings Ryan Bester leads the charge once more but will not have it all his own way as we approach the final months in this rankings period. Scott’s mammoth collection of ranking points during the 2015 NSW State Championships has the Australian Jackaroo well placed 158 points clear of Carla Krizanic in second. Fellow Australian Jackaroo team mate Carla Krizanic (nee Odgers) will need to reduce the deficit prior to the Australian Open as the two are set to team up in the pairs and fours where they will be defending their title alongside Merrylands twins Samantha and Natalie Noronha.
State Championships will play a big part with plenty of points on offer for Queenslanders during their state carnival in May and South Australia’s this month; certainly a chance for Ryan Bester to extend his lead on the field or see other bowlers come into the frame ahead of the Australian Open. The calendars pinnacle event, The Australian Open is the only tier one ranking event with the most points on offer throughout the year; there is 120 points available to the singles champion, 90 points each for the pair’s champions and 60 points to the fours champions. If you have an event coming up don’t forget to register it as a ranking event and help bowler in your local area accumulate ranking points or attract elite bowlers to your event chasing some bonus points as we near the end of the rankings year. Visit http://www.bowlsaustralia.com.au/Events/Player-RankingSystem to register your event.
Krizanic will get her opportunity when she competes in the Victorian Champion of Champion Singles, the Victorian State Singles and Victorian State Fours; which combined is worth a total of 162 points, enough to see Krizanic take the lead providing Scott’s points remain the same. Scott has already surpassed the total of 265 she set in the inaugural rankings year with the Australian Open and South Tweed Prestige Singles still to come for the current Asia Pacific Games fours gold medallist. The top five women’s rankings is rounded out by current and former Australian Jackaroos Lisa Phillips, Claire Turley and Anne Johns. The top of the men’s rankings is far more congested with former Australian representative Lee Schraner surging into second spot, closely followed by Jeremy Henry (NSW), Chris Herden (NSW) and Garry Ball (VIC). Schraner only trails Bester by 23.4 points after notable victories in the Tasmanian State Triples and Fours, the Moama Classic Pairs, the East Launceston Bill Springer Singles and most recently the top performed bowler at the Glenorchy Rodman Easter Carnival. 8 BOWLS PLUS VICTORIA APRIL - MAY 2016

NSW women claim five-peat, Victorian men break drought NSW and Victoria were the big winners of the 2016 Australian Sides Championships in Queanbeyan. The NSW women etched their name into the history books at the Australian Sides Championships in Queanbeyan on April 3, while the Victorian men added another chapter to their illustrious chronicle. The Blues secured a unique slice of history after becoming the first state or territory to claim five consecutive titles in either gender’s event, after the women’s team obliterated their own record of four straight victories set last year. Women’s Bowls NSW earned a five-peat of Marj Morris Trophies after finishing the event with an unblemished record and victories against all other state and territories, with the exception of Northern Territory who weren’t present for the four days of warfare. The milestone result was the state’s tenth title triumph in 26 stagings of the women’s portion of the competition. There was further cause of celebration in the Waratah state, with the rink of Dawn Hayman, Kay Moran, Beth Quinlan and Karen Murphy 10 BOWLS PLUS VICTORIA APRIL - MAY 2016
awarded the best-performed team honours, as the only unbeaten team with six straight wins and +64 shot difference. In the men’s Alley Shield event, Victoria broke its 14 year dry spell after maintaining its untarnished record in the last round this morning. The Big V were clinical in their final performance against Tasmania, which everyone presumed they needed to win in order to dethrone the defending titleholders NSW by an outright result and avoid a count-back, but actually finished with a two game surplus as the Blues were toppled by South Australia by 2 shots in the last round. It was a momentous result for the Victorians, who have been relegated to runner-up placing a number of times in recent years, with the occasion marking their ninth Shield victory across 51 stagings of the event since 1959, and first since 2002. Bowls Victoria’s Dane McKinnon, Brad Orr, Dylan Fisher and Matthew Flapper secured the best-performed men’s team accolade, with six wins from seven starts across the four days, and a shot differential of 49. The Overall Champions Trophy result went down to the wire, given NSW and Victoria both enjoyed stellar campaigns across both genders, but it was the Blues who were more consistent across both events, with a second place finish in the men’s compared to Victoria’s third in the women’s. As a result, the Blues locked away their fifth
overall win in nine years, since the introduction of the award in 2008 when the men’s and women’s events were combined. Bowls Australia congratulate NSW on claiming five consecutive Marj Morris Trophies, in addition to the Overall Champions Trophy, and Victoria on winning their first Alley Shield since 2002, while also acknowledging the valiant effort of the other six state and territories.

A new era in the sport has emerged and the man who will anchor bowls’ resurgence back onto free-to-air TV is no stranger to our sport. When you tune into ‘The Bowls Show’ on SBS or SBS on Demand, coming to your televisions on May 15, the new host may be familiar to those who witnessed the third instalment of the revolutionary Australian Premier League or tuned into Bowls Australia’s radio program ‘Without Bias’.
Popular sports broadcaster Jack Heverin will anchor The Bowls Show on SBS and SBS on Demand
Heverin leads free to air revival
Jack Heverin has been an avid spectator of bowls since the tender age of six; however the sports broadcaster could never have imagined commentating a bowls show years after his pop introduced him to our sports infamous stars, Kelvin Kerkow, Steve Glasson and Rob Parrella by watching the popular Jack High series.
Without Bias was Heverin’s re-introduction to Lawn Bowls and the weekly show was a chance for the talented broadcaster to let his passion for bowls shine through and give his own modern take on a sport that was stereotypically an ‘old man’s game’. Heverin says he is very proud of what was achieved during his time hosting national radio show Without Bias. “For me there were a number of highlights including the great ratings, terrific feedback from viewers, a great response on social media but mostly the chance to uncover hidden superstars in the sport,” Heverin recalled. “There were people we chatted to on the show who hadn’t previously received any accolades for their contribution to the sport; one of the best interviews was with a great man named
Graeme Clements from the Blind Bowls Association who devoted so much time and had so much passion for bowls. “It was also a lot of fun going down memory lane with the likes of Kelvin Kerkow and Steve Glasson.” Heverin brought his own modern touch to the sport and it wasn’t long before Bowls Australia acquired his services for the ground breaking new event, the Australian Premier League at Club Pine Rivers. Jack was a popular inclusion to the Fox Sports commentary team for APL03 having spent the first two instalments behind a different microphone as the rink-side announcer for the live matches. Heverin speaks very highly of the APL, saying it is the best thing he has seen happen to the bowls in some time. “I was aware of the potential of the APL and was so pleased to see it get off the ground,”
said Heverin. “If I hadn’t been given the opportunity to announce or commentate I would have been happy on the sideline peeling the oranges just to be part of the event; the APL is just what the sport needed to break down some stereotypical barriers. “The APL has been an amazing experience in my career and the tournament will continue to go from strength to strength.”
Heverin’s career is moving in leaps and bounds having already notched up impressive appearances on his resume including commentating the Cricket World Cup Final at the MCG when Australia defeated New Zealand and also commentating on one of Australia’s biggest sporting events, AFL Grand Final day. Heverin’s enthusiasm for promoting bowls, a sport that he grew up watching every Saturday at the Dandenong RSL where his pop played, is why his involvement in the SBS broadcast is to great delight of Bowls Australia. Bowls is quickly becoming one of Australia’s fastest growing sports and with so many international events coming to Australian shores, events like the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, there will be plenty of opportunities gearing up to the major multi-sporting event for bowls and our athletes to shine, all of which can be captured on SBS or SBS Demand. Bowls Australia will maintain its relationship with Fox Sports as the sport’s official PayTV partner, which will continue to televise more than 30 hours of live Australian Premier League and Australian Open coverage, in addition to other unannounced events.

X Factor for Lawn Bowls Part 2 Following World War II, Lawn Bowls became a godsend for all our troops returning home, and from that base lawn bowls eventually became one of the most played sport in Australia together with netball shortly after. However those two sports had two things in common; somewhat draconian rules and uniforms, often inhibited by officialdom, being wonderful to play, but lacking the X factor to elevate their status into the future. The Netball Association recognised its potential, and with a turnaround of innovative planning and development forged ahead of lawn bowls by modernising their game, dealing with key rules and uniforms, bravely adopting their professional approach so necessary to achieve the status they enjoy today. Now I must refrain from banging on further about the constant bleeding of the life blood out of Lawn Bowls clearly set out in180 innovation columns published since the early 90s. However, those hundred and eighty innovation columns not only defined major issues, but offered clearly defined solutions, presenting many dynamic viewing features so necessary to fully achieve the “X factor for lawn bowls! Therefore this Innovator has not, and will not, lie down until the eyes of channel vision following on from 27/7/1973 so long ago open wide to view the host of lost opportunities still alive right now entering 2016. Well that’s the challenge dear readers, solutions are not impossible, therefore there must be others out there prepared to stand up and be counted for the future of our game, so supported with your input allowed me to set up achievable formats to encourage readers participation.
Well, before we engage in such noble missions we must heed to advice once given to me! “The first thing to do, is to drain the swamp to get rid of the alligators”. Now that’s something to get your teeth into! Having achieved that, consider your wealth of knowledge acknowledge on the subject regarding,“coloured bowls and uniforms”, dumb rules, and ever changing formats for starters, and what our readers can reasonably expect from your most welcome submissions free of alligators? However it is absolutely essential that such submissions offered, past or present must be comprehensively defined in your submissions to avoid repeating the rampant plagerisation of my previous submissions so comprehensively researched and defined in my innovation columns attending many Bowling Clubs and their members to achieve credible data prior to publication. Note: All submissions received from readers will be treated as absolutely confidential and acknowledged as required. It is a great pity that I have to reach that stage, however there are solutions involving tough love and lots of guts in order to resurrect and innovate key features so necessary to allow Lawn Bowls to be fully recognised as a skilful and exciting game to play and watch in the future in Australia and around the world. Therefore in order to achieve my key objectives previously, it must be noted that introducing coloured bowls and uniforms, involved endless research and development at considerable expense in order to launch and develop such colarisation programs for TV! This involved endless presentations attending key TV stations discussing’s critical issues with their production managers, followed up by visits to Tweed Heads Bowling Club and selected Bowling Clubs in NSW in order to film and fine tune my pilots later, much appreciated on their green. Additionally the Northbridge bowling club in NSW was the venue that one Sydney commercial TV station offered by filming the new formats for Commercial TV featured later on air. Following on the ABCs live coverage of the format at the Sydney City Bowling Club viewed by the public, club members, and officials including the President of the New South Wales bowling Association attending that club on 27/5/1975 saw a sneak preview for my World Series Bowls program prior to submission. Input arising out of that pilot screened that night on the ABCs “Sports Night Program” attracted considerable press coverage. In spite of all the incredible negativity associated with my efforts to develop my formats further to allow lawn bowls become a regular feature on TV, and live, Bowls Australia and Bowls New South Wales dismissed the colourisation and new rules without bothering to discuss or evaluate that and later innovation rules? Well the good news is that the late Kerry Packer did it for WSC in spite of the rubbishing he received, but the bad news for me is that my pocket was not big enough to do what Kerry achieved. While all that stuff was in motion Powerplay International, finally backed my fully funded World Series Bowls competition on the 29/10/1985.

Expected turnovers documented in the Prospectus documents, indicated turnovers of up to $800,000 were listed, unfortunately for the future of lawn bowls in New South Wales our Bowling Associations canned WSB series also at very short notice when all the invited bowlers entries around the world were being processed and received by the Power Play team. After spending over 40 years developing the "World Series Bowls" and "Super Bowl" formats featured in 178 Innovation Columns and live pilots on Air to boost the Lawn Bowls profile and image, one must wonder how any Professional Association worth its salt could stand by and rubbish pilot innovations live on TV? Unfortunately for Lawn Bowls the chickens have come home to roost and still shocked by bleeding memberships, the loss of the ABCs TV Bowls series, and other never ending formats extensively displayed and ignored. As a stark reminder readers don’t have to be geniuses to work out how the NSW male and female lawn bowlers’ membership of 291,676 during the late 70s, could possibility fall to around 60,000 players leading up to 2016. (Around 40,000 males and 20,000 females) Therefore, readers need to know the reason why I busted my gut writing in my 178 Innovation Columns, and the production of the live pilot demonstrations for TV in order to stop the membership decline!

VICTORIA GREENKEEPERS The summer of 1992, I had finished year 12 and went head first into a sports turf management apprenticeship. Almost a quarter of a century later I am still loving my job and the challenges it throws at me, and have seen many things around me evolve with the times from the art of preparing a great green, to the game of bowls itself. The practice of green keeping has changed dramatically. The basics of cutting and rolling have not altered but today we have so much variety when it comes to aeration and de-compaction methods. The range of fertilisers has also grown to suit our needs with a lot more liquid products available. Pesticides have also seen a huge change with herbicides, fungicides and insecticides all becoming a lot safer for the greenkeeper and the environment. The biggest change to the industry in my eyes has been in the past decade or so, and that has seen the change from cool season grass to a warm season grass as our playing surface on our bowling green’s. Basically every year bent grass greens are ripped up and replanted with couch grass, mainly tift dwarf. There are still the clubs here and there that are planting bent grass, but the majority of new greens these days are tift dwarf. There are pros and cons for both varieties of grass on a bowling green in Victoria, but that’s something to look at another time. In saying all this and with so many things that have changed with the times, there is still one aspect of the game of bowls in Melbourne that is living in the mid 1900s, and that’s the metropolitan pennant structure. In 1992 when I started greenkeeping, it was basic. All greens were cool season bent grass, bar a couple. Meaning you play on them through spring, summer and autumn, close them down for the late autumn through winter to renovate or resurface, then reopen in the spring, done. The pennant season started in October, the weekend after the AFL grand final and concluded mid march, just before the AFL season was to start again, so it worked perfect. That was a long time ago and we have moved forward. With the introduction of the warm season couch grass into Melbourne or renovation practices have had to change. Greenkeepers can no longer do their green renovation in the cooler winter months as the couch grass is dormant and in a lot of cases still being bowled on for the winter comps. Renovations to bowling greens are essential to maintain a true healthy green that is both easy to look after and a great bowling surface. With the bowls season structured as it is there is only one time of the year that greenkeepers can close a green down and do some important work and have the greens perform to the best of its ability. This time of the year is over the Christmas break, as soon as bowlers step off the green after the last game of pennant, greenkeepers fire up and start their renovations. This is sometimes only a few days before Christmas making the festive season very busy for greenkeepers. Once the greens are aerated, scarified and topdressed with amendments added the greens are let grow and recover, rejuvenating the green and giving it a well deserved rest. Ideally the time required to allow the grass to grow through the soil, be cut down and rolled back into a good bowling surface is anything from 6-8 weeks. Some greenkeepers in other states even get a chance to give their greens a second topdress in this time turning their green into a billiard table. In Melbourne this is the opposite, as soon as we see the grass pock its head through the soil we are on it prematurely, cutting and rolling trying to get the green into shape as the pennant season starts mid January. To rush a green back into play is not good for anyone. If greenkeepers have laser topdressed , meaning adding more soil than normal to rectify low spots, they run the risk of the grass not growing trough and having sandy or even bare areas and a surface that is slow and no fun to roll on. The last game of pennant before Christmas, five bowling greens were officially timed in Melbourne below 13 seconds. Four weeks later on the first pennant game back, over 35 greens were timed under 13 seconds, a massive increase, and it took a number of weeks for the green speeds to rise again. Greenkeepers simply do not have enough time over the Christmas break to renovate their greens. The unfortunate thing is that by mid February, once the greens are at their best, the weather is perfect, the season is over and the bowler’s not playing finals have no pennant to look forward to in the best time of the year in Melbourne. Im sure there are factors that Bowls Victoria have to consider, but it seems simple, start the pennant season back up after Australia Day. Everyone is back from holidays, the weather is great, the greens will be perfect and the season will continue into Autumn and still be wrapped up with plenty of time for those with bent greens to renovate before the winter. It seems logical, but like playing mid-week pennant on a Tuesday rather than Thursday, it make no sense and I doubt things will change in the near future, but I think its worth looking at.

IN THE JARGON OF LAWN BOWLING, A “RUB” IS AN OBSTACLE, USUALLY A PATCH OF UNEVEN GROUND THAT PUSHES THE BALL OFF ITS INTENDED COURSE. In his ruminations, Hamlet uses the phrase “there’s the rub” to say, “there’s the problem, here’s the difficulty.” Since modern English speakers continue to use this Shakespearean expression, it’s worthwhile to track its origin. And, as it turns out, the phrase derives from the world of sports — Elizabethan style. In Shakespeare’s day, the game of lawn bowling was a popular pastime. Called “bocce” in Italian and “boule” in France, the game involves rolling or throwing balls towards a target ball.

In the jargon of lawn bowling, a “rub” is an obstacle, usually a patch of uneven ground that pushes the ball off its intended course. The term “rub” was applied to other impediments or obstacles as well, and by the time Shakespeare wrote Hamlet, around 1600, the expression “there’s the rub” meant, “there’s the obstacle, that’s the drawback — the metaphorical uneven ground standing between you and the target.” Chrysti M. With an estimated 20,000 manuscripts submitted to publishers each year in Australia - and so few are published - it's a daunting task for writers with work of merit. That is why Sid Harta Publishers currently only consider manuscripts that have been professionally read by our own listed editors. This is a mandatory step required by our publishing house and one which provides the necessary ‘filter’ to enable management determine which projects we would support. Subject to the assessment, should our editors recommend a manuscript for publication SHP negotiates with the author to have the work polished by our team, liaising with the author until the work is considered ready for book design. A small number of review copies are then produced to test the market and solicit reviews. Copies are sent to distributors and reviewers who
examine the work and offer an opinion as to the market viability of the title. Subject to that report and review response SHP would then offer the author one of a number of publishing options ranging from a traditional publishing royalty based arrangement to co-publishing or simply managing the printing and distribution of a limited print run on behalf of the author. This is not vanity press. SHP will only publish works that have merit. To ensure the quality of our titles we have engaged highly-skilled, professional editors to prepare the final manuscript for publishing. SHP management is conscious of the need to maintain the highest level of integrity in the quality of works published, testament to this is the substantial list of authors whose high profiles are evident amongst the general community. Amongst these, three titles with forewords by the current Governor General of Australia, His Excellency the Hon. Peter Cosgrove, the most recent past Governor General the Hon. Quentin Bryce, and the previous Governor General, the Hon. Michael Jeffery.

Weighing in on nutrition Amber Beaumont, Accredited Practising Dietitian, Dairy Australia Eat more, eat less, eat this, eat that. We are bombarded with advice on what to eat to stay healthy, and, while this is important at every life stage, the older we get, the more important it becomes.
milk, yoghurt and cheese are not linked to weight change or risk of obesity.
If you’re a regular on the bowling green, you’ve already taken a fantastic step towards better health. Well done! But, when it comes to deciding what to eat, it can be a little more confusing. People avoid different foods in the belief they’re bad for them. However this is often misinformed.
In addition, these foods contain high quality protein and when combined with exercise, help maintain lean muscle, which has an important role in weight management. The 2013 Australian Dietary Guidelines encourage people to choose nutritious foods from the five food groups (milk, yoghurt and cheese are included in these) and to limit junk foods in an effort to maintain a healthy weight.
A good example is dairy foods. Some people avoid dairy foods due to concerns that these foods will lead to weight gain when in fact, the evidence suggests this is not the case and that
Junk foods such as cakes, sweet biscuits, pies, ice cream, pastries, processed meats, potato chips, soft drink, sports drinks and sweetened fruit juice, contribute excessively to
the energy intake of Australians. They tend to be high in saturated fat, sugar and salt and low in fibre or essential nutrients. Limit these types of foods in your diet and you’ll find you’ve got space for more nutritious foods that you might have been missing out on. To optimise health, cut down on junk foods and aim to achieve at least the minimum recommended daily intake of foods from the five food groups. That way, there is plenty of room for milk, yoghurt and cheese in your overall diet – and by including three to four daily serves of these dairy foods your body and waistline will reap the benefits. Don’t cut out the good stuff! Here are some healthy recipes to inspire you.

P-51
This 1967 true story is of an experience by a young 12 year old lad in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. It is about the vivid memory of a privately rebuilt P-51 from WWII and its famous owner/pilot. In the morning sun, I could not believe my eyes. There, in our little airport, sat a majestic P-51. They said it had flown in during the night from some U.S. Airport, on its way to an air show. The pilot had been tired, so he just happened to choose Kingston for his stop over. It was to take to the air very soon. I marveled at the size of the plane, dwarfing the Pipers and Canucks tied down by her. It was much larger than in the movies. She glistened in the sun like a bulwark of security from days gone by. The pilot arrived by cab, paid the driver, and then stepped into the pilot's lounge. He was an older man; his wavy hair was gray and tossed. It looked like it might have been combed, say, around the turn of the century. His flight jacket was checked, creased and worn - it smelled old and genuine. Old Glory was prominently sewn to its shoulders. He projected a quiet air of proficiency and pride devoid of arrogance. He filed a quick flight plan to Montreal ("Expo-67 Air Show") then walked across the tarmac. After taking several minutes to perform his walk-around check, the tall, lanky man returned to the flight lounge to ask if anyone would be available to stand by with fire extinguishers while he "flashed the old bird up, just to be safe." Though only 12 at the time I was allowed to stand by with an extinguisher after brief instruction on its use -- "If you see a 26 PLUS VICTORIA APRILAPRIL - MAY 2016 26 BOWLS BOWLS PLUS VICTORIA - MAY 2016
Mustang Salute to American pilot: the late-JIMMY STEWART fire, point, then pull this lever!", he said. (I later became a firefighter, but that's another story.) The air around the exhaust manifolds shimmered like a mirror from fuel fumes as the huge prop started to rotate. One manifold, then another, and yet another barked -- I stepped back with the others. In moments the Packard -built Merlin engine came to life with a thunderous roar. Blue flames knifed from her manifolds with an arrogant snarl. I looked at the others' faces; there was no concern. I lowered the bell of my extinguisher. One of the guys signaled to walk back to the lounge. We did. Several minutes later we could hear the pilot doing his pre-flight run-up. He'd taxied to the end of runway 19,
out of sight. All went quiet for several seconds. We ran to the second story deck to see if we could catch a glimpse of the P-51 as she started down the runway. We could not. There we stood, eyes fixed to a spot half way down 19. Then a roar ripped across the field, much louder than before. Like a furious hell spawn set loose -- something mighty this way was coming. "Listen to that thing!" said the controller. In seconds the Mustang burst into our line of sight. It's tail was already off the runway and it was moving faster than anything I'd ever seen by that point on 19. Two-thirds the way down 19 the Mustang was airborne with her gear going up. The prop tips were supersonic. We clasped our ears
as the Mustang climbed hellishly fast into the circuit to be eaten up by the dog-day haze. We stood for a few moments, in stunned silence, trying to digest what we'd just seen. The radio controller rushed by me to the radio. "Kingston tower calling Mustang?" He looked back to us as he waited for an acknowledgment. The radio crackled, "Go ahead, Kingston." "Roger, Mustang. Kingston tower would like to advise the circuit is clear for a low level pass." I stood in shock because the controller had just, more or less, asked the pilot to return for an impromptu air show! The controller looked at us. "Well, What?" He asked. "I can't let that guy go without asking. I couldn't forgive myself!" The radio crackled once again, "Kingston, do I have permission for a low level pass, east to west, across the to west pass." "Roger, Kingston, I'm coming out of 3,000 feet, stand by." We rushed back onto the second-story a distant scream. Moments later the P-51 burst through the haze. Her airframe straining against positive G's and gravity. Her wing tips spilling contrails of condensed air, prop-tips again supersonic. The burnished bird blasted tearing the air. At about 500 mph and 150 yards from where we stood she passed with the old American pilot saluting. Imagine. A salute! I felt like laughing; I felt like crying; she glistened; she screamed; the building shook; my heart pounded. Then the old pilot pulled her up and rolled, and rolled, and rolled out of sight into the broken clouds and indelible into my memory. I've never wanted to be an American more than on that day! It was a time when many nations in the world looked to America as their big brother. A steady and political water with grace and style; not unlike the old was proud, not arrogant, humble, not a braggart, old and honest, projecting an aura of America at its best. That America will return one day! I know it will! Until reciprocal salute to a Country, and especially to that old American pilot: the late-JIMMY STEWART (1908-1997), Actor, real WWII Hero (Commander of a US Army Air Force Bomber Wing stationed in England), and a USAF Reserves Brigadier General, who wove a wonderfully fantastic memory for a young Canadian boy that's lasted a lifetime. At the commencement of the 2013/2014 Pennant Season it was doubtful whether we would have sufficient players to field a Tuesday team of 12. We now have teams playing Saturday and Tuesday. The resort is a lifestyle village for over 50’s which have an 8 rink undercover bowling green with lights for use by residents and their family and friends. The Club has been successful in reaching the finals over the past two pennant seasons. The past season 4 out of our 5 teams reaching the finals.

We have gained pennant players from residents who have taken advantage of our BV Affiliated Coach and highly successful fun bowling competitions. Pennant is not for everyone and the resort caters for an enthusiastic group of "fun bowlers" who have taught themselves to bowl and enjoy playing their social bowls on a Tuesday and Saturday morning. During the summer months a group of residents arranged twilight bowls competition for all residents and their guests on a Thursday evening. The Resort has a supply of bowls to be used by residents until they purchase their own.
Two of our teams won flags in the Metro-West Competition with one team going on to win the Division 7 Metropolitan section. A great achievement as only 1/3 of our players had never played bowls prior to being a resident of the Resort. Only Palm Lake Resort Residents are
Residents are encouraged to make use of the bowling green and are seen practicing their skills on a daily basis.
Geoff & Margaret looked around at 14 other villages before settling on Palm Lake Resort. After visiting 3 times, they decided to leave their holding deposit.
‘On Sunday 20th March, Palm Lake Resort took out the Championship and are now Saturday Pennant Division Winners’ says Margaret, with her medal proudly around her neck.
‘We kept coming back to Palm Lake Resort because it had such a great atmosphere about it. We loved the style of the homes, how well presented the village was and the security. After viewing so many other villages we knew exactly what we were looking for. We purchased a house right across from the Bowls Facility as it had such a nice outlook’ said Geoff.
‘We are so proud of everybody at the Bowls Club, what a fantastic result for a club that has only been around for 3 years’ they both agree. Stage 1 & 2 are SOLD OUT and Stage 3 is selling fast. For more information on Palm Lake Resort or for a free guided tour please phone 1800 686 096 NOW.
Not long after moving in, Margaret spotted some bowlers on the green across from her home, and decided to go over and check it out. ‘When I got there I spotted a resident bowling, and asked him if he’d mind teaching me the ropes. He was more than happy to give me a hand, and show me the basics, and for that I’m forever appreciative – whenever I see Bill now I call him my Coach’. Geoff said ‘After downsizing to Palm Lake Resort and no longer having to maintain such a large garden, I was looking for something with an exercise component to keep me busy. Bowls definitely fitted the bill, and I also helped set up the licensed bar at the Bowls Club.’ Both Geoff and Margaret had never bowled before, and thanks to the friendships formed and community spirit at the Palm Lake Bowls Club, are both now part of the pennant teams. 28 BOWLS PLUS VICTORIA APRIL - MAY 2016 28 BOWLS PLUS VICTORIA APRIL - MAY 2016

Common Questions About Hip and Knee Joint Replacements In recent years, hip and knee arthritis have become more common in Australia. Arthritis is affecting younger people. The most effective treatment for getting rid of pain in advanced hip or knee arthritis is joint replacement surgery. Here are the answers to some of the questions I’m asked most commonly about Hip and Knee Replacements. Mr Ben Campbell
How long will my new knee or hip last?
There is an old rumour that a hip or knee replacement will last about 10 years, but in reality they are much more durable. Usually, a joint replacement will last the rest of your life. The Australian Joint Registry keeps track of all Hip and Knee Replacements in Australia and whether they need to be revised. It shows that only 5% of hip replacements need to be revised by 10 years after surgery. Over longer periods this also holds true – 10% after 20 years, 15% after 30 years is a good guide, as long as implants with a good track record are used. This means that even after 30 years 85% haven’t needed to be re-done. The same is true with knee replacements, again provided that proven implants are used After my recovery period, what sports and activites will I be able to get back to? The answer to this depends a little on circumstances – each patient and each joint replacement is different, so it’s important to follow the advice your surgeon gives to you specifically. However, for most people the aim is to allow any activity which is comfortable; high impact activities should be avoided. We are happy for most of our patients to walk, swim and cycle as much as they want. Bowls, golf, dancing, pilates, yoga (except extreme positions!), hiking, gym machines (walker, elliptical, spin, gentle rowing), doubles tennis, are fine for almost everyone. Skiing, weight lifting, ice skating are OK in some circumstances, for some patients, especially if they are experienced in the activity prior to the surgery. We discourage full contact sports, long distance running, high impact gymnastics, squash for most patients. With sports like basketball or soccer its fine to gently throw or kick the ball around without actually contesting or jumping.
joint, but not the muscle. Muscles that aren’t used will get weak, and as arthritis develops and your joint gets painful, you tend to use it less and the leg gets weak. After joint replacement, even when the pain is gone, exercise is the only way to regain the lost strength. Secondly, a joint that is not used will get stiff. Particularly after Knee Replacement, it is very important in the early period to get it moving as much as possible to prevent stiffness. Thirdly, as we all know, exercise is a great way to keep weight down. Keeping your weight down helps prevent pain around your joint replacement; keeping weight down may help prevent it from wearing out or wearing loose sooner. What is the replacement made of? A number of materials is used. In knee replacements, most often the implants are cemented into the bone and are a composite of Cobalt and Chromium with smaller amounts of Molybdenum, Nickel and other metals. Between the components in the femur (thigh bone) and the tibia (shin bone) a hard, highly polished plastic (polyethylene) allows it move smoothly with almost no friction. In Hip Replacements there is a titanium outer socket which grips in the bone of the pelvis. There is a polished, hard, low friction polyethylene socket within that. If the bone is weak the polyethylene socket can be cemented into the bone rather than using the titanium outer socket. The ball is made of stainless steel or a very hard ceramic. Ceramic can also be used in the socket instead of polyethylene in some cases. The ball of the new joint is held in place in the femur bone by a stainless steel stem cemented into place or a titanium stem bonded directly to the bone. Occasionally chromium, cobalt, vanadium, aluminium, tantalum and other metals are involved too! Will my joint replacement set off alarms at the airport? It can. The security people are aware, and they are usually understanding after they wave the wand over the area and it proves that its something in you, not something you are carrying. Just to be sure, for everyone who has a joint replacement, we organise a card to carry in their wallet which explains exactly what implant they have. For more information on joint replacement or any other surgery, please visit our website: www.melbournehipandknee.com.au
Mr Dirk van Bavel
How do I know when my arthritis is bad enough for joint replacement? You should try simple solutions first – exercise to strengthen weak muscles, weight loss, painkillers, possibly a walking stick. It’s different for each patient, but I often ask two questions to decide: Firstly, is there an activity which you enjoy doing that you’ve had to stop or limit it because of the arthritis. Secondly, is pain from the arthritis waking you at night – disrupted sleep has a big impact on life and activities. How can I get the most out of my Joint Replacement? Keeping as active as you can is the best way to improve the function of a hip or knee replacement. There are three reasons for this. Firstly, the surgery replaces the

It’s the story of a South American Magellanic penguin who swims 5,000 miles each year to be reunited with the man who saved his life. Retired bricklayer and part time fisherman Joao Pereira de Souza, 71, who lives in an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, found the tiny penguin, covered in oil and close to death, lying on rocks on his local beach in 2011.
After a week, he tried to release the penguin back into the sea. But, the bird wouldn’t leave. ‘He stayed with me for 11 months and then, just after he changed his coat with new feathers, he disappeared,’ Joao recalls. And, just a few months later, Dindim was back. He spotted the fisherman on the beach one day and followed him home. For the past five years, Dindim has spent eight months of the year with Joao and is believed to spend the rest of the time breeding off the coast of Argentina and Chile.

It’s thought he swims up to 5,000 miles each year to be reunited with the man who saved his life. ‘I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,’ Joao told Globo TV. ‘No one else is allowed to touch him. He pecks them if they do. He lays on my lap, lets me give him showers, allows me to feed him sardines and to pick him up. It’s thought Dindim believes the fisherman is also a penguin ‘Everyone said he wouldn’t return but he has been coming back to visit me for the past four years. He arrives in June and leaves to go home in February and every year he becomes more affectionate as he appears even happier to see me.’

Biologist Professor Krajewski, who interviewed the fisherman for Globo TV, told The Independent: ‘I have never seen anything like this before. And, just like that, the world seems a kinder place again.

Favourites from an internationally classic music repertoire – such as Gershwin’s Summertime, Albeniz’s Tango and Handel’s Arrival of the Queen of Sheba – have been cleverly arranged by Parnell to create a whole new vibrant listening experience despite the familiarity of the melodies. Most importantly, the vibraphone is superbly melded with the piano allowing the percussion instrument a rare moment in the spotlight, showcasing the technically challenging elements and the sheer lyrical beauty of the songs. Born in the Australian outback, Nick Parnell started teaching himself drums in his parents’ sheep shearing shed at the age of ten. Such humble beginnings ignited a passion in Parnell that has led to industry acclaim, such as the Centenary of Federation Medal awarded by the Australian Government and appearances with the likes of David Helfgott, Simon Tedeschi and the Australian String Quartet. classical world, Parnell’s ongoing ambition is to break down the elitism of classical music and make it available for everyone to enjoy – something he achieves with mastery through Vibes Virtuoso. Healthy Ageing Seminars
Ageing is a natural process and part of the human condition. However, far from being a natural process, the accelerated ageing that most of us are experiencing is a man-made disease and a mistake. Despite all the scientific knowledge and technology that is available, we have not learnt how to achieve successful healthy ageing. Poor lifestyle choices, toxic relationships, stress, and lack of exercise all conspire to age a human body beyond its years. That’s why ageing, as most of us experience it, relates more to disease than to chronology. This is good news, because we already know enough about disease to successfully intervene in the ageing process. Good health, and good mental health slows down ageing, causing one to look, feel, and actually be younger.

Blackburn South has been one of the strongest performing suburbs in Melbourne's ongoing real estate
boom. It offers great access to infrastructure including hospitals, shopping centres, sporting clubs and transport and has access to some very nice parkland. All these benefits have seen the price of family homes reaching the once unthinkable level of one million dollars. If you are over 55 and no longer working there is however one way to enjoy all these benefits, own your own home and enjoy a warm and supportive lifestyle for less than half that cost. Barrina Gardens is an established retirement community located in Blackburn South. With 60 homes and full time on site managers it offers 24/7 emergency support. The village is well located and offers a sense of community on a human scale. It is set in attractive bird filled gardens and has its own resident centre, community garden and village bus.
Homes start at less than $300,000 for one bedroom units with three bedroom units around $500,000. All the homes are characterised by the generous proportions of their rooms and their outdoor courtyards. One important aspect of purchasing a home in Barrina Gardens is that residents own the title to their property and are not merely leasing their home as is the case in many retirement villages. Barrina Gardens has a strong community of bowlers with Blackburn,
