Service Dogs Alabama

By Monica Segrest, Service Dogs Alabama committee chair

We had the pleasure of serving with Service Dogs Alabama again this year. The organization provides medical and psychological assistance dogs to children, adults and veterans with disabilities as well as facility intervention dogs for schools and courtrooms.

Our placement provided hospitality to the new handlers who are being placed with their service dog. Last year, JLM committee members decorated and furnished PODS cabins where the guests stay during the weeklong placement and training process. A PODS ribbon-cutting was held in November 2021 for the SDA Board.

In August of 2021, eleven veterans received their dogs. Members of Junior League Montgomery provided and served meals during their stay at SDA. Our committee also helped to prepare the PODS with welcome baskets for new handlers. Funding from the JLM placement also went toward sponsoring the placement of one specifically trained facility dog at Pine Level Elementary School in Autauga County.

We look forward to interacting with the recipients, while making them feel comfortable and welcome during their stay on the SDA campus. Thanks to everyone on our committee for your dedication in serving this wonderful organization this year.
