Venezuela ›››››››››››› Country Review ‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹‹

The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela is a federal republic located on the northern coast of South America. It is bordered by Colombia on the west, Brazil on the south, Guyana on the east, and the islands of Trinidad and Tobago to the north-west. Venezuela's territory covers around 916,445 km2 with an estimated population around 33,221,865. Venezuela is divided into 23 states (estados), a capital district (distrito capital) corresponding to the city of Caracas, and the Federal Dependencies (Dependencias Federales, a special territory). Venezuela is further subdivided into 335 municipalities (municipios); these are subdivided into over one thousand parishes (parroquias). The states are grouped into nine administrative regions (regiones administrativas), which were established in 1969 by presidential decree. The economy of Venezuela is largely based on the petroleum sector and manufacturing. Revenue from petroleum exports accounts for more than 50% of the country's GDP and roughly 95% of total exports. Venezuela is the fifth largest member of OPEC by oil production. The National Currency is Bolivar Fuerte (VEF). Since Hugo Chรกvez imposed stringent currency controls in 2003 in an attempt to prevent capital flight, there have been a series of currency devaluations, disrupting the economy. Price controls, expropriation, and other government policies have caused severe shortages in Venezuela and other goods, including medical supplies. In 2015, Venezuela had the world's highest inflation rate with the rate surpassing 200%, becoming the highest in the country's history.
