About half a year ago I was pretty sure it was not for me. What could possibly be fun about striking a rubber ball against the walls of a locked, claustrophobic court? Why would anybody play a poor man’s version of tennis and still pay loads of money for it? But a friend of mine finally convinced me to try and after one hour I just had to admit that I couldn’t be more wrong! Let me briefly introduce you to squash – a game which combines health with pure fun and which you can enjoy all over Cracow. What’s so special about squash? Let’s begin with an undeniable fact that it’s healthy. Yeah, you might basically say it about any sport, but squash is probably the number one among all! Based on factors like calories burned and muscular strength and endurance Forbes magazine named squash to be the healthiest sport in the world knocking over sports such as running, cycling and swimming. To be more precise: squash is incredibly fast paced and due to the limited area inside which may always try to reach the ball, you never have a valid excuse to take a break. This makes you keep moving and burn up to 1000 calories per hour! You can significantly improve your quickness and lower body strength while constant twists and turns increase flexibility in the back and abdomen. Of course hitting the ball only softly won’t allow you to win the game, so while playing you build up strength and power of your arm muscles. Finally,

11

regular practice boosts the capacity of lungs and reduces the risk of heart problems. You’ll definitely experience all of the above after a couple of times you step on the court. Secondly, if you’re competitive, in squash you’ll find everything you need. During an hour (this is for how long you usually hire a court) you will take part in dozens of fascinating rallies and, depending on your skill level, play up to several emotion-packed games. Squash is not only about hitting the ball as hard as you can and constantly improving your stamina. The variety of shots and an opportunity to use all four walls of the court force different strategies. Sometimes it’s nothing less than having to outsmart your opponent, the most physically engaging game of chess you’ll ever play. And it quickly becomes addictive. Finally, despite the stereotype that squash is a game for wealthy businessmen, which prevailed in Poland for many years, it’s really available easy to start and not that expensive. Rules are simple and you’ll learn everything in less than ten minutes. It is also not difficult to get the basic kit together and start playing. All you need is a racket, ball and obviously clothing (shorts, shirt and non-marking trainers), which in basic version won’t cost more than 350 zlotys altogether. Of course at the beginning you may rent almost everything in one of the handful of facilities you’ll find in Cracow. Prices vary from 30 to 65 PLN for an hour, depending on the time (in the evening and late afternoon it’s usually the most expensive) and place, but if you take into account that the price is divided by two, it really becomes bearable. Most squash centers in Cracow allow you to access the gym or sauna once you pay for a court, which is an additional benefit. Here are just a few addresses you might consider visiting if you want to play squash in our beautiful city:

12

Atlantic Squash and Wellness

A great, atmospheric club located on 15 Stradomska Street, in the very heart of the city. It has only four courts, which sometimes requires you to make a reservation earlier, but the centre also gives you an unique opportunity to play squash 24/7. A game of squash at 2 a.m? Priceless

Squash4you

The biggest squash club in the city in two different locations: one on 7 Nad Strugą Street (Prądnik Biały District), second on 54A Księcia Józefa Street (near the Zwierzyniecki Bridge). A total of 12 courts, easy access from the centre, saunas and cafes where you can chill-out after the game. A no-brainer.

Racquet Squash Club

If you want to get tired after the shopping or the other way round, Racquet Squash Club inside the Zakopianka Shopping Mall (62 Zakopiańska Street) is the perfect choice. Four fully professional courts inside. Ok, enough! I won’t convince you any longer. I’m absolutely sure you’ll understand the magic of this game once you step on the court. See you soon!

for booklovers in Cracow 14

1. Books just love being read outdoors Cracow in the summer is full of places that just beg you to sit and chill out for a couple of minutes. But why not expand a few minutes of chill-out to hours? I vividly remember whole days when I used to sit in spots like banks of the Vistula river, Planty park, or various other parks scattered around the city banks with a thrilling book in my hand. Great atmosphere and warm sun make every word so much better. Just try it!

2. Check the book-friendly places

Cracow not only does have plenty of outdoor spots to enjoy a book, but also some fantastic cafés where you can grab great pieces of literature directly from a bookshelf. Number one for all English-speakers is definitely Massolit Books & Café located on 4 Felicjanek Street, less than 10 minutes walk from the Main Market Square. Probably the best English language bookshop you’re ever going to find in the whole Eastern Europe will greet you with large rooms full of books and smell of delicious American pies and coffee. But that’s not all! Just a few hundred meters from the Wawel Castle (11 Kanonicza Street) lies literary café Bona. You can check also Czuły Barbarzyńca on 11 Powiśle St., Lokator on 1 Mostowa St. (with books mostly in Polish, but you will find something in English as well), or Cheder Café where you may get both entertained and learn about Jewish culture.

3. See what you read

You’ve probably read some books which were set in towns that you’ve visited. It’s a great feeling when the plot takes you to places you’re familiar with and you may relate to the character better. That’s why you should try reading a book set in Cracow during some breaks from wandering around its alleys. I you know Polish language it’s really plenty to choose from, but even if not, you’ll definitely find some interesting positions. If you want to turn the clock back to WWII we remind you that the Academy award-winning Spielberg’s Schindler’s List was based upon Thomas Keneally’s novel Schindler’s Ark. You may also check less depressing, but also located in the Jewish Ghetto The Kommandant’s Girl by Pam Jenoff. If you’re keen on fantasy you

15

4. Get anything you want in Poland

We’re aware that with Internet and e-book readers you may download any book basically anywhere, but we think that nothing beats the old-fashioned digging between bookshelves. But is it possible to find anything interesting in Polish bookstores? Of course! There’s an English language shelf in most bookshops and even bigger ones in Empik chain stores (located for example on the Main Market Square). We’ve already mentioned the fantastic Massolit Books & Café, but there’s also a really good American Bookstore in Galeria Krakowska right next to the main train station. Finally, you may go on a little treasure hunt during the flea market organized on Sundays at Hala Targowa or Plac Nowy. If you can make it through tons of Polish titles you might find a real gem there.

16

5. Let the book live longer

All literature lovers will admit that the sheer fact of having books on a shelf is a source of happiness. But a book that no one picks from the shelf loses its purpose and magical powers! That’s why book swapping events are organized more or less once a month in Cracow. Even if took only one on your trip to Cracow, grab it and come to Galeria Krakowska between the 7th and 9th of June and give your book a second life while getting something interesting for yourself. If you won’t be able to make it come back on the 31st of August on 2 Wszystkich Świętych Square. Or maybe you’ll find someone eager to exchange a book as you chat with him/her while sitting in a café or a park bench? Books not only are your friends, but in Cracow they’ll help you find friends. Daniel Jochemko

urban born art

Sometimes you can`t be sure what is art nowadays. It`s not easy to decide what is art and what is not. The boundary is blurred for some time and you can claim to be artist whenever you like. But what if art really is something born from nothing? Let`s look on unique sculpture which I entitle urban art.

There was a concrete block. Nothing special. To be honest, I don`t even know what was its purpose and what it is intended to be. But it doesn`t really matter right now. What matters is the evolution its design, if I can call it that way. As time was passing, the block began to crumble. One piece after another as it usually happens. Thanks to this disintegration, there appeared some interesting form that inspired passing by artists. The decided to use some spray and decorate the block. He got from

18

them eyes and some teeth and ear. I suppose that it is ear. Although it is not the mister of the world, it got new fascinating look which enjoys people who stop by and stare at it. Like for me it`s the great example of urban born art. I really appreciate the imagination of its creators. The hero of this story can be admired near Wawel Castle and Wisła river. It`s very noticeable so you wouldn`t have problems to find this atypical monument. Marcin Karolak

A traditional English pub situated in the heart of old Krakow, where a Victorian dĂŠcor helps create a pleasant atmosphere. The Bull Pub offers its guest a well equipped bar with a wide selection of whiskeys including single malts and a wide range of beers, from Irish and English to Polish barreled beers. Your drinks can be accompanied by superb snacks and completed by a Cuban cigar from its well stocked humidor.

I don`t know if you live in Cracow for some time or maybe you`ve just arrived few days ago. Nevertheless, if you want to meet with your friends in here, you need to know some of the most popular places where friends gather together in order to go somewhere together. ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

At the Bagatela theatre It`s very popular place because it`s a crossroad and people from many different districts can get there quite easily. Usually hardly anyone really goes strictly to the Bagatela theatre when meeting there. It`s very similar if you want to meet someone at the Philharmonic. I`s also well known place.

It is relatively easy to recognize such places. Usually you can notice smaller or bigger crowd collected in a single location, without any common purpose. Everyone is looking for someone. Friend, colleague or a date. There are few especially popular places for meeting in Cracow. 20

At the moneybox It is a liitle bit problematic because for few years famous moneybox is in its place no more. But people still remember famous meeting place and exact location of the old-fashion moneybox, real urban legend. The location is on the market square, near the end of Szewska street.

At the Empik store

It`s really comfortable to meet there during winter because if someone`s gonna be late you can always wait for your friend inside and enjoy yourself with reading newspapers or books. It can be very helpful if someone is notorious lagger.

Near the Wawel Dragon Dragon. Of course! One of the best places for meeting is neighborhood of Wawel Dragon statue. The first celebrity of this town doesn`t mind bothering him regardless of the time.

21

As you can guess – every smaller or bigger square has its fans who insist to meet exactly right there.

Nowy Square

(called Plac Nowy in Polish) beEspecially cause you are able to eat gorgeous Zapiekanka.

It`s certain that if you decide to stay here longer or visit this city more often, you`ll find your own places for meeting with friends. Those which I mentioned are totally reliable and the best for the beginning! Marcin Karolak 23

Motel Krak

M

s e n o 27

First one of our heroes has never been a landmark in Cracow, but in my memories it definitely remains to be one of them. When I was a kid my mum used to take me on trips to Cracow (I used to live near Katowice) and when it appeared on the right-hand side as I looked through the windows of our car, I knew we were entering the city. I also stood there when I was waiting for the bus to take me on my first trip abroad, scared and fascinated as hell. Place that I’m talking about is Motel Krak located right next to Ofiar Katynia Roundabout. In the 1970’s and 80's it was a classy hotel where cream of the society used to meet. Now severely demolished motel is a dying remnant of the old power - Wawel-Tourist enterprise, which managed dozens of the best hotels and camp sites in Poland. In the 1990s and 2000s complex began to deteriorate and lose more and more of its value and functionality. It finally went bankrupt and now is owned by the city, which is willing to sell it for more than 20 million zlotys. Go see remains of Motel Krak before there will be only multi-storey office buildings left there. Ironically our next hero’s biggest dream was to become a skyscraper in Cracow. But not only one of them, it wanted to be the highest of them all. And it has been exactly the one until the Cracovia Business Center near Grzegórzeckie Roundabout was build in 1998. Sort of. The tricky part in this story is that Szkieletor (nicknamed after Skeletor, the main villain from an animated TV series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe”, which was popular in Po-

28

land in the early 1990’s) has never been finished. The construction of what was to become the regional office of Main Technical Organization began in 1975. A 24-storey skeleton of the building was completed in 4 years, but the investment had to be stopped due to financial problems. Now, after nearly 40 years, the building still has no walls or windows and it’s only functionality is being a good spot for gigantic billboards. There have been various plans to utilize the construction. Nearby Cracow University of Economics wanted to transform it into conference centre, Hilton aimed to turn it into a 5-star hotel, but all ideas remained only in the planning stage and Skeletor still haunts everyone near the Mogilskie Roundabout.

Płaszów railyard

Whereas Skeletor is a graveyard of ideas, lokomotywownia Płaszów (Płaszów railyard) is a real graveyard of old trains. It was built in 1927 and consisted of a set of office buildings and 2 large depots. During the WWII it was modernized and expanded, but after decades it has been left only to deteriorate. On one hand it’s a pity, but on the other it is a real treat for all urban explorers and fans of railways. It is a rather easily accessible place, even though adjacent to a functioning railway facilities. The most noteworthy are devastated wagons and old steam locomotives. Located near the Kraków Płaszów train station. Next place used to be a prosperous investment as well. Created in late XIX century in Podgórze district the Libana quarry has once been a big and prosperous stone-pit. During the WWII the Kraków-Płaszów Nazi concentration camp was built nearby, and due to that between 1942 and 1944 quarry was turned into a penal labor camp for Poles, who had to work in extremely hard conditions. After that it has not been used for many years until 1993 when Steven Spielberg created a set for his famous

29

Libana quarry

Prefabet

30

"Schindler's List" there. 34 barracks and 11 guard towers were erected for film purposes and many of the decorations have still not been cleared. Access to the quarry is only possible at your own risk. You can see it while walking the narrow path from Kopiec Kraka (Mound Krak) to the new Podgorski Cementary.

The list could go on, but we’d like to tell you that in order o see some other forgotten urban places you might need to hurry. For example an abandoned concrete factory Prefabet at 53 Centralna street, which used to be one of the last places in the city for fans of industrial photography and a popular spot for music videos or creative wedding photographers is quickly turning into a big construction site. Hotel Forum located at the bank of Vistula river (28 Konopnicka Street), even though still partially empty, this spring has turned into an art cafÊ and restaurant Forum Przestrzenie which quickly gains popularity. Still there are numerous fascinating full abandoned buildings scattered around the city. Just throw your tourist map into trash and go search for them. Our dead heroes might be resurrected any Day.

Enchanted

Pigeons 38

They are one of the most noticeable inhabitants of market square in Cracow. There are plenty of them. Some may think that they are really the ones who rule this area. Yes, I mean of course pigeons. Like everything in this city, there are many legends and myths about them and one of those says that they are enchanted. How come?

These birds arouse many different emotions in general. They`re quite funny, they walk peculiarly moving their heads to some unusual rhythm and they are willing to eat almost everything that you decide to feed them with. That`s nice about pigeons. What is more negative about them? Pigeons are birds. Birds fly, quite high, and like all animals – they have their needs. So after a solid meal, they can become burdensome bombers. Probably everyone who live in Cracow more than one year, survived this specific kind of attack. But what about the legend? How you can believe that they are indeed magic and enchanted? The story is very interesting and unbelievable. Once there was duke Henryk IV called The Righteous. His dream was to unite all the lands of the duchy, but he had no money for such a big project. Then came the fairy with unconven-

39

tional solution. She turned his team into pigeons. Right now it`s strange but listen on. The pigeons sat down on Mariacki Church and began to peck pebbles, which turned to golden coins when they fell to the ground. The duke took all the money and went to Rome in order to discuss the problem of the lands with Pope. Unfortunately the trip was enough long for him to start partying during it. He feasted on the way, played and lost all the money. He never went back to Cracow and his brave team remained enchanted. So if you are tourist visiting Cracow, you should be careful with pigeons. They may think that you are the duke returning to Cracow and it`s quite possible that it can piss them off for hundreds of years of waiting. Only under one condition – that the story is true, of course. Marcin Karolak

The Sokół (Falcon) gymnastic society has played an important role in the history of Poland, at times when our country didn’t even

A healthy mind in a healthy body Initially Sokół was launched in Lviv (which belonged to Poland before World War II) as a society for improving the physical abilities of young Poles and their national consciousness (A healthy mind in a healthy body has always been Sokół’s motto). In 1884 Cracow joined Sokół as one of the branch offices. Thirty years later the society joined Legiony Polskie to fight for the independence of the country and mostly this is why Sokół is so well known in Poland. In the history of Poland, Sokół played a vital part when it comes to football. Thanks to the society’s initiative, the first ever football game has been performed in the lands of Poland (at the time our country was stripped into three pieces between the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, Prussia and Russian Empire). Two teams representing Cracow and Lviv clashed on the 14th of July 1894 to begin a rich tradition of football, even though in both cities football was seen as a plebeian sort of entertainment at that time. Today with the EuroCup tournament approaching, the legend of Sokół strikes back. You can visit the building of the society on 27 Piłsudskiego Street to learn more about it’s rich tradition and enjoy the football game on a wide screen while drinking a cold beer. Pod Sokołem Restaurant invites you to watch every single game of the EuroCup 2012 tournament in its beer garden.
