S P I T
FOR SUMMERTIME IN CRACOW 14
1. Vistula is the place At the foot of Wawel Hill runs the famous Vistula River, the longest river in Poland. And we’re writing this not only to remind you that it’s a must-see during your visit in Cracow, but also because it’s probably the best place to enjoy some nice outdoor activities in the summer. Cruises on boats and river trams? Check. Biggest city beach in Europe with a beach bar and a volleyball pool? Check. Pubs and restaurants on ferries? Check. Air balloon with an observation deck? Check. If you want to go jogging or maybe just sit on a blanket and have a picnic, this is the place to be. But remember – if you’d like have a beer with your friends, you better not drink it at the river bank. It’s one of the few places where the police is always eager to fine somebody for drinking in public.
2. Have a barbecue
Barbecue in the summertime is almost a national tradition in Poland, so don’t hesitate to grab a large Polish sausage, pack a single-use grill and head to the nearby park when it gets hot. But where, when it’s forbidden to set up a grill in the Planty Park which encircles the Old Town? Don’t worry, there are plenty of places to choose from. One of the most popular spots is AGH University of Science and Technology Campus (Miasteczko Studenckie AGH in Polish), where hundreds of students frequently gather for “grill nights”. Jordan Park and Błonia Park are really nice as well. But if you’d like to settle in a perfect place, you should probably go by one of the lakes. Wait, lakes?
3. Meet me by the lake
Yes, there are numerous lakes near Cracow, some of them really clos e to the city centre. As nothing is better than the closeness of water during the sweltering heat of August, you should consider taking a trip to one of these. Zakrzówek, a former stone quarry now filled with water, is a really popular and picturesque venue. Currently it’s forbidden to swim there, but it’s proximity to the city centre (just around 10 stops when using public
15
transport) makes it a fantastic place to head to. Beautiful Kryspinów lagoon is located just 12 km from Cracow, is easily accessible by city buses and has a guarded swimming area. Same with Bagry (just 7 km from the Main Market Square) or Przylasek Rusiecki. Just pick your spot.
4. Grab a bike
Pedaling a bicycle frequently turns out to be the quickest way to get from point A to point B during the rush hour, but it’s also a perfect choice to move around the city in the summertime. Why get stuck in a tram or a bus when you can move faster, get healthier and enjoy the good weather at the same time? Plus you can go on a coupleof-hour trip to the hills of Wolski Forest, Benedict Abbey in Tyniec or Ojców National Park. You’ll love it and you’ll enjoy your cold beer more than ever, when you come back in the afternoon. But remember not to use your bike after more than one cold beer! It’s much safer to walk your bike back…
5. Get a little extreme
We’re absolutely aware that Cracow is a great place for sightseeing, clubbing etc., but if you really want to make your stay unforgettable, complement it with some extreme activities. You might not have thought about it, but paintball with your friends, go-karting or scuba diving in Zakrzówek flooded quarry are easily available, if only you want to spice up your trip a little bit. Just do it! DANIEL JOCHEMKO
A traditional ENGLISH PUB situated in the heart of old Krakow, where a Victorian dテゥcor helps create a pleasant atmosphere. The BULL PUB offers its guest a well equipped bar with a wide selection of whiskeys including single malts and a wide range of beers, from Irish and English to Polish barreled beers. Your drinks can be accompanied by superb snacks and completed by a Cuban cigar from its well stocked humidor.

SURF MY COUCH! The idea is simple and brilliant at the same time. Non-profit startup was launched by Casey Fenton, Daniel Hoffer and Sebastien LeTuan in 1999. Since that time CouchSurfing community gathers through the website, all people ready for exploring the world and sharing their experience with others. All you have to do is log on to COUCHSURFING.ORG (now you can do it via an application on Facebook as well) and do a search for members who offer their couch for free in the cities on your itinerary. After someone accepts your couch request, you can start packing. The big adventure is around the corner! LIST OF CS-BENEFITS One could say that the biggest advantage of traveling by the means of CS-website is the cost reduction. Since you have a free place to stay and cheap flights to book, visiting foreign countries on a shoestring budget became a real option. Well, saving money is important, but definitely not the greatest benefit you gain from Couch Surfing. As for me, as I have been a part of that community for more than 2 years now, it is meeting the locals which makes the real value. Have you ever thought while visiting new cities – “I wish there will be someone who would take me to the bar with regional food
18
and show me around”? Well, couchsurfers will always help you discover secretly hidden places, local customs and culture. Instead of following the guide blindly, you have the unique chance to get to know the real face of the city with a little help of its dwellers. THEY WILL ROB ME! That’s the most common fear. How can you trust a complete stranger, let her stay or host you one second after you met? Actually, it’s far more safer than you expect thanks to precautions that the service provides. The first one is a network of contacts, which link you to your friends. After surfing your couch or being your host people leave you a reference or – only if you are a highly trustworthy member – vouch for you. Who is an average surfer? An intelligent, intuitive, energetic, life-loving, friendly, bubbly and polite person in his or her 20’s, ready to share some time with you. You will probably never see each other again, that’s why you should make a good use of those moments. One more advice before you buy a ticket. Many surfers like to bring their hosts small gifts from their own countries, mostly sweets and souvenirs. Although, there is no obligation to do so, it is an extremely nice way of saying thank you to a person that let you stay under his or her roof. Hopefully, we will meet some day on the road!

R O F RUN
! E F I L YOUR Most people nowadays are working on a computer. Most of the time they`re sitting behind the desk. As you probably know, this is not the healthiest lifestyle. Taking care of your body and health has become fashionable and everyone tries to find their own way to do it. Many of them choose jogging. If you feel free when running, Cracow is the best place for your favorite exercise.
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Bulwary Wislane It`s the rout along the Vistula river (Wisła). It`s very popular among the people living in Cracow. There you can meet tourists, cyclists and people just walking by. It`s one of the best places to train in the morning. And the views are great!
The structure of the city allows you to find a lot of interesting routes for running. It depends on where you like to run the most. Cracow is very friendly for people who like jogging and they can count on the city, which often arranges competitions for runners, for example. But before you run a marathon, you`ll need some practice of course. Which routes are the best for the people who run? We can recommend a few of them. 20
Rudawa embankments It`s a bit similar to the route along Vistula river but it runs along smaller river Rudawa. The area around looks like some kind of village. It`s quiet and peaceful road. You can easily rest when running.
Wolski forest It`s a good place for long and grueling run. You rarely meet other runners here so you can focus on the exercise. The route is appreciated by experienced joggers. You don`t have to worry about hitting a random walker.
Last but not least – Błonia It`s definitely the most popular place in Cracow. The giant meadow is extremely popular also because people love to run all around it. Many people running around out there. It`s a good to meet there with your friends and try your best.
Run and find your own tracks! You can train everywhere so good luck! 21

ONE Y L N OBUILDING 31
It was originally intended to be the headquarter of the Main Technical Organization (Naczelna Organizacja Techniczna, NOT) and should be named NOT Tower. The construction of the building began in 1975 but it was stopped permanently in 1981 according to historical and economical events those days. It gained the name Skeletor because it really looks like one. It`s only bones without muscles and organs. It became an infamous landmark of Cracow. But for some it is a beautiful monumental statue. There were few investors who wanted to renovate the building but there are many difficult legal issues about it, such as legal status of the land on which it stands. Demolition or renovation costs would be enormous so all investors withdrew from the potential investment. Skeletor was left alone. The enthusiasts of the building were happy and the opponents complained. Even though Skeletor is not finished it`s the second tallest building in Cracow, after the Błękitek high-rise office building. You can like it or not but this is one of the most interesting buildings to see in Cracow. And definitely the one really immortal and indestructible. MARCIN KAROLAK

Romantic hotel in Kazimierz district. Home character and original interior. Stylish and romantic Rooms and Apartments of Oberża Sąsiadów are situated in a 19th century carefully renovated tenant house in the very center of Kazimierz, Krakow's historie Jewish quarter. Next to the building is the oldest Kupa Synagogue, and right around the corner you can find Tempel Synagogue. It is thus very near the Wawel Hill (5 minutes walk) and the Main Square (10 minutes' walk). The transport to railway (PKP) and coach (PKS) stations is comfortable (tram lines no. 3, 13, 19, 34, and 36), a taxi stand is next to the building. We also organize transport from the airports in Balice (Kraków) or Pyrzowice (Katowice).

EVERY TOWN NEEDS A
SUPERH
40
The real prote ctor, the one w ho brings hope justice. Gotham and has got Batma n and Cracow`s Lajkonik! Meet got‌ the one of the most original p heroes – a bea olish rded man with wooden horse his waist. around
RHERO!
41
Of course he`s not really a superhero like Spiderman or Captain America, but he is the symbol of Cracow. The hero this town needs! What is the origin of Lajkonik? It`s not clear where and when Lajkonik was born. Some say that its origin was in pre-Christian times. Peo- p l e those days believed that in the spring the horse brought good luck and high crop yields. But let`s focus on his atypical look‌ A bearded man with a pointed hat dressed in Mongol attire and of course (the strangest thing) wooden horse around his waist so he can fake that he`s riding a horse. Of course, when someone is sand-blinding... He definitely can be associated with Mongol culture and as we know – the Mongol invasion had place in 13th century so it`s important view on the origin of Lajkonik.
42
Cracow defended itself against the invasion. The other version of the story says that when Tatars were camping along Vistula river before the attack, few locals played a practical joke so they dressed like them and entered the city gates on the horses to scare the people. People in Cracow are well-known for their specific sense of humor. The character of Lajkonik is often used during festivals and you can meet one on the market square. You can also buy a lot of souvenirs showing the Cracow hero. Our hero, the symbol this town needs. MARCIN KAROLAK

The Sokół (Falcon) gymnastic society has played an important role in the history of Poland, at times when our country didn’t even exist on a map.
A HEALTHY MIND in a healthy body Initially Sokół was launched in Lviv (which belonged to Poland before World War II) as a society for improving the physical abilities of young Poles and their national consciousness (A healthy mind in a healthy body has always been Sokół’s motto). In 1884 Cracow joined Sokół as one of the branch offices. Thirty years later the society joined Legiony Polskie to fight for the independence of the country and mostly this is why Sokół is so well known in Poland. In the history of Poland, Sokół played a vital part when it comes to football. Thanks to the society’s initiative, the first ever football game has been performed in the lands of Poland (at the time our country was stripped into three pieces between the Austrian-Hungarian Empire, Prussia and Russian Empire). Two teams representing Cracow and Lviv clashed on the 14th of July 1894 to begin a rich tradition of football, even though in both cities football was seen as a plebeian sort of entertainment at that time. Today with the EuroCup tournament approaching, the legend of Sokół strikes back. You can visit the building of the society on 27 Piłsudskiego Street to learn more about it’s rich tradition and enjoy the football game on a wide screen while drinking a cold beer. Pod Sokołem Restaurant invites you to watch every single game of the EuroCup 2012 tournament in its beer garden.
