MEDITATION PATH Mindful awareness can be defined as paying attention to present moment experiences with openness, curiosity, and a willingness to be with what is. It is an excellent antidote to the stresses of modern times. It invites us to stop, breathe, observe, and connect with one’s inner experience.
“Direct your eye right inward, and you’ll find a thousand regions in your mind yet undiscovered. Travel them, and be expert in home-cosmography” -Henry David Thoreau

The main pathway cuts through the bowl depression area, suspended between the water line and park groundline above. Steming from the suspended walkway are strais leading down to platforms floating at various heights. Providing the users moments of isolation, as well as options to interact with the water, or levitate above it.

A platform hovering over the water in isolation and solitude is the final meditation moment. Connected by a the elongaded bridge that pierces the landscape and errupts from the hillside. The path narrows to a width of a single user emphesizing the idea of solitude. The platform provides abundant space for users to stand and overlook the water. No bench seating is provided to provoke the user to remain standing. A minimal cable wire railing with minimal post profile allows for uninterupted views as one approaches the platform, which is seperated by a single step in elevation. As the user finishes his or her meditation, and turns around they discover the return path is revealed to them, with a gentle downward slope suggesting that is the path of ascention back to the ground plane below and back to the world.

PRIVATE - STANDING
The entry to the meditation path intices the passer by’s with a wide open terraced stair. The stair has the initial practical usage that can be used as seating along the hillside as many people do already. When the user decides to embark on the path, and begins the ascend downward into the bowl depression, they notice the a change of pace. The stairs at the top at the point of entry descend at a common rate, but towards the bottom the rate changes as the rise of the stairs decreases and the thread is allongated. This allows the user to change pace, and slow down their heart rate, as one would in preperation to meditating.
15
The elevation of the path remains level through out the journey, referencing the practice of controlling ones breathing during meditation, keeping it steady and level. To achieve this the path disects the landscape creating several tunnels that become the transition areas between the meditation points. The tunnels vary in width, with wider openings at the entrances and exits to aleviate anxiety of users and have them proceed inside. Inside the tunnels are punctured by several skylights to bring light into the tunnels and act as a guide for users inside. The skylights raise above the groundplane above to entice people above to observe and interact.
PRIVATE - SITTING MEDTIATION Emerging from the tunnel transitioning from the group meditation space the user enters a path floating slightly above the open valley. As they progress along the path they notice the a section to the right slightly elevated with several individual stairs leading up to the private sitting meditation spaces. Floating like birdhouses among the trees on the hillside, these cabins are shaped to provide seclusion and a focused view that eliminates the surroundings. As one enters the floating cabins and progress inwards the ceiling drops to a height of 4.5’ forcing the user to sit down to experience the view, and begin their meditation.
GROUP MEDITATION Acending the entry stairs the user discovers the group meditation area to their right, seperated from the main path by a slight elevation, and pronounced by the canopy that covers it as well as the main path. Burried into the hillside, the group meditation area can be used by one or more small groups. The space is visually divided into smaller areas by the sparce location of the support columns. The overhang that covers the space provides shelter as well as functions to designate the area and reduce the noise and awareness of Jamaicaway that runs adjacent to the park.

FINAL MODELS Displaying the various moments of meditation and program. Starting from the entry on the right hand side of the model; Entry steps, followed by the Group Meditation space. Followed by the elevated private mediation pods. Through the transitional underground tunnel, new moment of experience is the reflecting pond. And Lastly the user arrives at the private standing meditation space, overlooking the water of Jamaica Pond.

Rehabilitation center Rehabilitation can be seen as a process of movement, transitioning from one state of being to an improved one. The experience of transition can be experienced in various types of mediums such as light, temperature, elevation and space in the sense of confinement. The process of rehabilitation is not confined to a simple linear trajectory with a defined beginning and end. But rather it is a culmination of experiences and practices focused around a single goal. This idea is translated into the spacial organization of the building program. The building is split into three wings with a central point of interconnecting circulation path. The wigs are split up based on the experience and function of the program it contains, and allows for moments of transition to be experiences as one circulates from one type of therapy to the next.Â

INITIAL MASS STUDY MODELS The project was approached with focus on creating a space that reflects and complements the surrounding landscape while reacting to enviornmental forces presents on the site, Allowing for maximum light exposure for program that requires it, and shielding the building from the northerly winds. The project was inspired from the elements discovered through the mapping exercise displayed on the previous page, along with the analysis of the site. Driving characterinstics that were implemented into the design were creating vertical and horizontal tranzitions. Creating spacesthat have a high contrasts between them, and emphasizing the transition between them, creating spaces that were defined by solid and void and light and dark.

JAMAICA POND Jamaica Pond is a kettle pond, part of the Emerald Necklace of parks in Boston designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The pond and park are in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, close to the border of Brookline. It is the source of the Muddy River, which drains into the lower Charles River.
