Site History: The Grade II listed building was commissioned in 1823 by George and Robert Stephenson, along with three partners, as the world’s first purpose built locomotive works on Forth Banks, Newcastle upon Tyne. 20 South Street is where Robert Stephenson’s engineering works gave birth to the railway age. The famous steam engines ‘Locomotion’ and ‘Rocket’ were built there and the works subsequently exported locomotives to developing railways all over the world.

The South Street Works which has been restored and preserved are the former office block and the former boiler and plate shop. The present day frontage of 20 South Street and the former offices of Robert Stephenson & Co’s locomotive works has also been saved. A large mezzanine floor, over part of the boiler and plate shop has also been restored.

Intervention

The brief is to design a facility for re-purposing and/or creative reuse. My scheme will be open to the public and will be the token space offering the learning of and return to the art of traditional photography. It will operate day and night; being activated at night by the cafe, shop and galleries and at day by the darkrooms, studios and workshops. Catering to professionals and amateurs of the art of traditional photography.

The art of traditional photography is a gratifying creative process. One is entirely involved in every process, that is, from conception of an idea to capturing the image to the final stage of developing the image. A nice change of pace compared to digital photography where images are produced instantaneously. My intervention aims to facilitate this by providing darkrooms, studios,workshops and material/chemical store. The intervention also aims to be activated through a gallery, shop, cafe and repair shop that will cater to photographers and the general public simultaneously. These facilities will operate both day and night.

The intervention will offer a means of activating the existing building, however it will be easily assembled and removed to allow the integrity of the existing building to remain,

Dead loads on the structure are fom the roof beams which is covered in Welsh slate. the load from the beams transfer to the cast iron beams which also then transfers the load to the concrete slab floors. the dead load from the beams also transfers to the masonry walls in the struvtire, which is than transfered unto the concrete floor slab.

Dead loads

Imposed loads on the structure are from environmental sources and occupation. the imposed loads from the environment are snow,rain and wind. this prevails from the west, thorughout the year. drains are fitted in the roof structure to ease the environmental laods the other sourc is from the activities occupying the space. the loads imposed on the building intrnally are fom people, equipmnts and intervention.

LISTED ELEMENTS The building is a Grade II listed building.

The listed status was considered into the intervention; the interventions are free standing ie it acts as and the materiality of the the new intervention contrasts the exisiting materials.

The listed status added a welcomed challenge to the designing process, it forced a need to stretch the creativity and allowed for the intervention to be bold.

2. Deteriorated Plaster

5. Brick Infill Crackling of the Trusses is due to the dead load and live load transfered onto the trusses from the roof. This is an alert that the roof could collapse thus the trusses need to be supported in the future with lightweight structural support.

Deteriorated Plaster is a result of wear and tear and lack of maintenance. Exposure to moisture also contributes to such deterioration. A variety of damp prroofing can be used to restore the plaste and wall back to its original beauty.

Rust is caused by the iron’s exposure to weather. This can be dangerous because the metal weakens with the rust however the rusted defects are not structural so it causes no damage to the exisitng structure. the rust can be left as it to add character or it can be removed with industrial cleaning agents.

Cracked Concrete Floors in the exisiting structure is caused by general wear and tear from age and other factors, not due to soil movement or an unstable foundation. this can be solved by applying a new layer of concrete.

Brick Infill. It can be assumed that this is due to the changing uses of the building over the years. Openings were filled with bricks to suit new purposes or even to prevent heat loss.

Approved Document M : Access To and Use of Buildings - Parking spaces are provided within 10 m of the entrance on the west facade to cater to the disabled - All walkways within the exisiting builing and the intervention are a minimum of 1500 mm wide to allow full accessibility for wheelchair users - All doors within the exisitng building and intervention are a minimum of 1000mm wide to allow full accessibility to wheelchair users.

- Access to the first floor is made availbale to wheel chair users via a lift. Circluation leading to the elevator are clear and unobstructed.

- Services (mechanical and electrical) are confined to the suspended timber floor or run along the cast iron columns to the roof structure to allow a clear floor space.

Approved Document B : Fire Safety - Each route is clearly illuminated and has signage to direct occupants in case of fire - Smoke alarms are installed throughout the building for audible and early fire detection.

- At areas of high fire risk, i.e. dark rooms and workshops, there are 3 fire exits. In the case of one being obstructed, there would be 2 more available.

- Throughout the building, distance to the nearest fire exit does not exceed 18 metres, as required within the Approved Document B. - All doors are at a minimum of 1000 mm for easy access and evacuation in case of fire

KEY **** Sprinkler System

Preventing Fire Spread The exisitng concrete floor slows down fire spread but that cannot be relied on to tamper the spread of fire through out the scheme.

Sprinkler systems are installed in the areas with high risk of fire i.e. the darkrooms, workshop and chemical storage. Due to the inflamable nature of these substances, the sprinklers are concentrated there.

Sprinklers are also installed in the studios. Although these areas are not high risk, there often house equipments that are highly flammable On the first floor, the sprinklers are installed in the staff kitchen and offices. The risk in these areas are very low but precautions must be taken.

The material palette of the intervention was chosen specifically to reflect the camera.

The resin flooring(6) are used inside the pods and the darkrooms to prevent hazards as the surfaces’ coarse texture provides grip.

The grey colour of the resin is chosen to create a smooth transition from the interior of the pods to the existing gery concrete floor. The orange rubber flooring(1) are placed at the entrance of each pod, a link to the use of amber light in darkrooms as a safe light colour The structure of the pods are made from cross laminate timber(3).

The interior finish of the pods are the laminate timber. The light colour of the timber reflects the daylight entering in from the western facade.

The artificial lighting in the scheme are of two categories.

One for general lighting of the space and for creating atmosphere and dramatic effect.

The second is placed in the intervention and are function specific. Example, the light in the darkroom comprises of a white light and safe light. Both are only located in the spaces where chemical will be handled.

The general light for the building are suspended from the roof structures and are incorporated into the structure and walls to conceal them from view. The heigh of the suspended lights are within human reach for easy maintenance.

The lighting technology is programmed to sensitive to activity, to dim after a certain period of inactivity. This is to save reduce heat gains as well as save on energy.

Loose Furniture Specifications

The loose furniture specified are all of the classic tubulra steel and wood design. Produces in Britain form the 1930’s, the tubular furniture, especially the chair was used in schools, hospitals and communal places. the tubular furnitures are sturdy, classic and stylish. It’s clean lines enhances and complimens the industrial language.
