Nathaniel Ogunniyi 2019 Chief delegate This year, ALETO Foundation’s flagship leadership programme held its Meet Your Mentor event at Microsoft’s swanky offices at 2 Kingdom Street, London. As I walked from Paddington station, I wondered. What would make today a success? If I came away with good contacts? If I knew my favourite team? If I felt fully equipped to make the most of the programme? On all of these grounds, I lost the battle. I made friends, not contacts. I was blown away by the terrific choice of teams, and took several days to make my choice. I realised I had work to do before I could make the best of the programme. I had to decide what I wanted out of it. I had to research the mentors and buddies further. I even had to research myself. What were my true strengths? Development areas? Where could I serve my fellow delegates? How could they help me? I had many questions, but very few answers. The evening opened with a session of nibbles and networking, where I met some of my fellow delegates, doing amazing things across a range of fields. We were welcomed by Paul Morrison, who works in Microsoft’s Education Industry Solutions. He’s also a member of the Prime Minister’s Multicultural Professional Networks Forum, and founder of I Dare 2 Inspire, a social enterprise empowering 14– 23-year-olds from BAME and socially and economically deprived backgrounds. We were also welcomed by Toyah Panton, who also works for Microsoft, and is a buddy to Team E. We were then presented with the teams, as follows:
TEAM A: Ayo Gabriel and Claud Williams with Chenelle Lamptey TEAM L: Akintunde Bello with Elizabeth Abiade and Renell Harding TEAM E: Charles Sekwalor with Toyah Panton and Eniola Edusi TEAM T: Cedi Frederick and Ernest Museka with James Harriette, Noelle Donkor and Janet Siwoku TEAM O: Dr Jebet Beverly Cheserem with Jemima Kola-Abodunde TEAM F: Kevin Lendor and Rosemary Russell with Itunu Abolarinwa We also heard from Paul Benjamin, the CFO of Microsoft UK, on the importance of both diversity and inclusion to Microsoft. He told us the following; “Companies in the top quartile for gender diversity are 15% more likely to have financial returns above their industry median, and companies in the top quartile for racial diversity are 35% more likely to have financial returns above their industry median.” This underpins the importance of Microsoft’s work in creating diversity in tech. The ALETO programme is a combination of whole group sessions and individual team sessions. The whole group gathered to hear from leaders of today, such as Sir Kenneth Olisa OBE and Sonita Alleyne, and break into teams to challenge a question. The
question, revealed to us at the meet your mentor event, was; “Talent Acquisition — With the advances in technology affecting industry, how does one go about finding, recruiting and retaining talent that will add value to your organisation and become leaders of the future”. On the final day, each team takes 10 minutes, with no power points allowed, to present their solution to the question, and are judged by a panel. The teams are led by mentors and buddies. The mentors are senior leaders in their respective fields, and remain your mentors for life. They are assisted by buddies, who have all been on the programme previously. This year, we had a Chief Mentor in Benjamin Ackim, who has won the Team Challenge on three occasions, and a Chief Buddy in Obi Okereke. At the Meet Your Mentor Event, mentors and buddies make a short presentation on why we should join their teams, and a few days following the event, we all made our top choices. I, like many others was given my first choice of team. As part of the interview process, we were all asked to give a 1-minute speech on ‘sharing success’. The most inspirational speech award was given to Cordelia Adoli. She performed a punchy spoken word, and was presented with flowers. The whole evening was like a good opening to a play; it set the tone for the programme. From the calibre of the delegates, to the maturity of the mentors, I knew the programme would be a great opportunity.

Last week was one of the most character-building times of my life! I had the biggest privilege of taking part in the Aleto Foundation leadership programme where I was enriched with talks from the likes of Sir Kenneth Olisa, David VillaClarke BEM, MBA, Professor Sue Black OBE, Kike Oniwinde and many more.
Allanah Green This summer I was part of the cohort for the Aleto Foundation summer leadership program, held at BT centre. The program consisted of speakers and individuals who willingly shared their journey and experience with us helping to share the keys of success and empower us and motivate us to become leaders of the future. Here are a few things that resonated with me throughout the program. 1. Redefine everything . You are the architect of your future - Benjamin Ackim 2. Accept the kindness of strangers - Sir Kenneth Olisa OBE 3. Never stop learning and be curious Sabine Chalmers
But even more enriching was being able to work with other incredible future leaders on a team challenge. Our team hit several barriers to the point of me almost wanting to quit, but they supported and encouraged me, we worked really hard, and in the end we were the winning team! My biggest lesson from this is: there is ALWAYS a solution and quitting is the only thing that will stop you from finding it.

Bimpe Adeyemi Participating in the Aleto Foundation Leadership Programme was the best decision I could have made at this point in my life. This programme made me re-evaluate what it means to be a ‘leader’ and the qualities the role entails. During the past four days, I had the privilege of listening to remarkable speakers with compelling stories which allowed me to gain some real insight into the meaning of the word ‘sacrifice’. Below is a summary of the key points that I had learnt these past few days: 1. When you realise that your dreams are bigger than you, always find ways to outgrow them. 2. Capture your essence and what you stand for. 3. Finally, don’t miss your opportunity to be great. My team became my second family. I actively made the decision to apply to the Aleto foundation Leadership programme. Fast forward 3 months, a shed load of tears, self-doubt, 4 days of intense self development, teamwork, and great support. I’ve managed to stop feeling sorry for myself and embraced everything the program had to offer! It brings me great pleasure to say my team won The Aleto Foundation, Team Challenge 2019! I’m so proud of each and every one of them for proving that we really are great! Yesterday “we had a marriage with success” ( Ikenna, 2019). I can’t thank everyone enough, for taking the time to come and speak to all the delegates. Winning the challenge was one of my highlights. However, The lessons I’ve learnt, the connections I’ve made, and the bright future that awaits are going to be the things that ensure I keep winning everyday! Chioma Abazie This past week I was honoured to be one of 72 delegates attending the Aleto Foundation Programme. These past 4 days have been life changing and has redefined what the word ‘Leadership’ has meant to me. I was able to meet likeminded individuals and future leaders such as myself and I cannot wait to witness the amazing things that we all do in the future. Being able to break out of my comfort zone is incredibly important to me and I was able to come out of my shell and voluntarily speak during a public session hosted by David Villa-Clarke BEM, MBA on ‘Why Education Was Important to Me’. As well as this, seizing the opportunity I was able to win a book (which I am currently reading!) from Matt Crabtree’s engaging session. My team and I also created a platform that would help ‘retain, recruit and find talent’. Being surrounded by incredible young people with the support of my mentors and buddies, I am truly grateful.
Thank you to Beverly Cheserem for being our mentor and Jemima K. for being our buddy. Team O smashed it and getting to know them all over a course of 4 days was such a joy. From here it’s all about going upwards and onwards. Clive Nyawo Today marks a weeks' Anniversary to my graduation in the Aleto Foundation Leadership Programme 2019. During the programme we worked on an intense team challenge to deliver an innovative tech solution to find, recruit and retain top talent. Through hard work, effective communication, collaboration and support from our mentors @Cedi Frederick FIoD, FCMI, FRSA, MInstLM GGA Ernest Museka and buddies Janet Siwoku Noelle Donkor our team (Team T) won this years team challenge.
Last week on the Aleto Foundation Leadership Programme was absolutely amazing.

Last week I had the privilege of completing the Aleto Foundation 2019 Summer Leadership Program.
For the past 4 days, I have had the privilege to be on the Aleto Foundation’s bespoke Leadership Programme. This programme really pushed me to my limits and got me to re-define what ‘leadership’ meant to me. Immersing myself in the 2019 cohort has been so refreshing as I was able to network with like-minded individuals and develop my skills through the various seminars and the Team Challenge the Foundation held. Aleto’s Leadership Programme taught me a few things about leadership: 1. “Redefine everything” - Benjamin Ackim 3. Establish what ‘success’ truly means to you. “What would make you proud in 40 years’ time if you achieved it?” - Sir Kenneth Olisa 4. “Your story is what makes you different”- Reggie Nelson 5. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you / buy into your vision - Professor Sue Black OBE 6. Adopt a growth mindset - “If you first ‘think’ you can do it, then you will start to ‘feel’ like you can do it and eventually you WILL do it” - Rob Coulthard I would like to thank David Villa-Clarke BEM, MBA, Veronica Martin and Sir
It was insightful and empowering, and provided the unique opportunity to learn from remarkable speakers such as Sir Kenneth Olisa, Sabine Chalmers, Professor Sue Black OBE, Kike Oniwinde and Gary Elden OBE to name just a few. We were also tasked with working as a team to pitch an innovative solution to a panel of judges from the likes of BT and Uber. Though the experience was marked with some hurdles, the growth and transformation we underwent together highlighted just how important it is to remain resilient, open-minded and bold enough to step out of your comfort zone. And to top it off we won! #TeamT I feel so lucky to have shared this experience such an exceptional cohort of delegates, each with their own individual stories, talents and inspiring plans to impact the world for the better. Special thanks to our mentors, buddies and our lead buddy Obi Okereke for all your support. Being a delegate on this year's Aleto Foundation Leadership Programme was one of the most valuable and important experiences of my life to date.
I especially want to thank Sabine Chalmers, Sir Kenneth Olisa, Gary Elden OBE, Reggie Nelson, Rob Coulthard, Matt Crabtree, Sonita Alleyne OBE, Benjamin Ackim, David Villa-Clarke BEM, MBA, Veronica Martin and all others who made this experience both possible and unforgettable. The team challenge was also a great highlight! I would like to thank my mentor Beverly Cheserem and buddy Jemima K. for their wisdom, commitment, patience and guidance through it all! They instilled valuable lessons in us but most importantly, the importance of selfdiscipline and marginal gains!
The 4 day programme re taught me everything I thought success to be. We heard inspiring speeches from ALETO trustees Sir Kenneth Olisa and Gary Elden OBE, and from Kevin Lendor, Matt Crabtree, Rob Coulthard, Sonita Alleyne OBE, and many other inspirational figures. Thanks to my buddies, Noelle Donkor and Janet Siwoku , who kept us on track and steered us to victory. The programme certainly pushed me outside of my comfort zone, especially being one of the youngest delegates on the programme, and I am grateful to have learnt a lot and formed amazing friendships and relationships during the programme. Why authentic? because during the challenge, I came to a critical and challenging point where I had to "redefine myself" and completely remove any ego to allow the team to develop and progress.

'Sharing Success With Tomorrow's Leaders' Aleto taught me a few key things about Leadership: 1) Surround yourself with people better/smarter than you, my team was full of incredible talent. 2) The power of the word "Redefine". Uber has redefined the taxi industry, Netflix has redefined the TV industry. We have to keep redefining ourselves. Otherwise, we will fall behind 3) Be the best version of yourself. If you're not that person right now, then you're not working hard enough and you're not fulfilling your true potential 4) What success looks like to you? If you don't know, how are you making the right decisions in life? With those 4 take away leadership points, I'm more focused and hungry for success. Ans leaving is legacy is what success looks like to me.

On Friday I completed The Aleto Foundation Leadership Programme. It was amazing to see black professionals; not experiencing this during my education made it hard for me to see myself in certain spaces. Thankfully Sonita Alleyne OBE said wondering if you belong shouldn't be a question. After our initial meeting at Microsoft, we had 4 days at BT to answer a question centred around Talent Acquisition.
