What Is Edtech? Edtech is a portmanteau of the words ‘education’ and ‘technology’. It is used within business to describe software and hardware designed to enhance learning led by teachers and to improve outcomes for students in education, as well as the companies that develop the hardware and software. Reducing the Teaching Burden There has been some controversy surrounding Edtech in certain circles, particularly within formal education, with some believing adding technology is simply a

cost-cutting measure. However, the creators of Edtech are quick to rebut this claim. The primary goal of Edtech is to enhance learning outcomes, reducing the burden on teachers by helping them provide individualised education plans in line with the curriculum.

Personalising Curricula and Relevant Assessments With the use of Edtech, teachers can personalise provision, so that it matches up with the needs of individual students. This frees up the time of the teacher to act as a facilitator and to work in the areas where they are most needed. This means that learners of all abilities and levels are able to progress at their own pace, repeating things they find difficult and making fast progress where appropriate.
