EdTech Start-Ups – Tips for Scaling in the United States For many European EdTech start-ups, the United States is seen as a primary expansion market with immense potential. As such, many are typically looking for guidance on how to best penetrate and scale in the US.

T

he leading authority in Europe’s EdTech sector, Brighteye Ventures, organised a panel event that hosted start-up figures with experience of expanding to the US market. Based on their presentations, the following emerged as key comments for start-up founders:

Spend Time in the Market To understand the US market, start-ups need to dedicate time to learning and understanding its dynamics. The start-ups that have successfully expanded took time to understand the nuances and various actors influencing how an EdTech solution can reach consumers and how effectively it improves what’s currently available in the market.

Keep an Eye on Broadband and Device Penetration A good EdTech solution won’t achieve much if the intended target audience lacks access to broadband internet and the necessary devices to access the solution. Companies like Nearpod started out by providing devices to classrooms, and as device and broadband access grew, they were able to focus entirely on their products rather than enabling access.

There Are Opportunities to Cash Out Successful start-ups should remain aware that they are likely to attract strategic acquirers in the US, one of the most fertile environments for finding suitors.
