ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF AUESTHETIC DESIGN: VOCABULARY WORDS LEXY PEREZ


SHAPE & SILOUETTE

When all the lines come together to create a three dimensional design this refers to the shape. Designers continue to create new shapes and silouette’s to make you think and look closer at collections. Shape and Silouette’s can be found throughout the world but more commonly recognized in architecture. (ex: Eiffel tower (right), Midnight in peking by Paul French (below)


Tactile qualities of the surface. In fashion this relates to the different qualities of a fabric or design. (ex. mess, lace, crackled Texture in the world can be seen through nature elements. (ex: leaves, ocean water)

TEXTURE


COLOR Color is light. Color can represent a feeling in fashion and events in


SPACE

Space refers to the area between a shape. By incorporating the use of space in your design, you can elalarge or reduce the visual space


PERSPECTIVE

Perspective refers to the areain which the art is organized.


FORM

Form is the shape and structure of art. Designers can show this through avangard and simply designs. Nature and humans shown form all throughout thier existence.


BALANCE

Balance refers to the equilibrium in a pictorial or scultureal composition (symmetrical) how do the lines relate to eachother and compliment the design. Asymmetrical balance= creative / a design may have similarities but overall differs in design.


RHYTHM

When designs repeat details to keep consistency is Rhythm. Rhythm can be random, regular, alternating, flowing,and progressive.


EMPHASIS Creates center of intent or focus. Emphasis is defined as an area or object within the artwork that draws attention and becomes a focal point. Subordination is defined as minimizing or toning down other compositional elements in order to bring attention to the focal point.


HARMONY Harmony/Unity When the principle of unity in fashion design is applied well, a garment or fashion accessory should look good overall. It should look as though it goes together, and it should look as though all the design elements are contributing to make a harmonious whole. Harmony can be described as sameness, the belonging of one thing with another.


HIERARCHY

Hierarchy is the arrangement or presentation of elements in a way that implies importance.


SCALE/PROPORTION

Scale and Proportion refer to the relationship of parts to a whole design.


SIMILARITY The resemblance between elements.


CONTRAST The differences that compliment eachother in elements by composition.
