Welcome Gather your friends and family, pen those wish-lists and head for the twinkling lights adorning your nearest House of Fraser… Yes, it’s time to start the big Christmas shop. With over 100 pages of inspired festive fashion, beauty and home ideas, you are free to BE YOU NO MATTER WHO this Christmas. And with a dedicated Christmas gifting section (page 48), we’ve made shopping for all the special people in your life easy – from luxe lovers and keen travellers to hosts with the most, there really is something for everyone. Personally, I’ll be dropping hints for a chic, new handbag. Fancy one? Turn to our 10 Most Wanted on page 11 to discover the tote of the season, then flick to the ultimate evening clutch on page 18. Seriously guys, any one of these bags will make us smile. Failing that, who wouldn’t love a gift card (see page 66)? If, like me, you always leave the shopping to the last minute, put the missing presents panic on hold. With our Buy & Collect FREE service, you can shop online right up until 10pm on 23 December, then collect your goodies in-store on Christmas Eve. That leaves you free to start the celebrations early (page 113) or relax with your loved ones over carols, mince pies and mulled wine. Which, as our brilliant columnist, Clover Stroud, says on page 63 is exactly what the festive season is all about. That, and the perfect party outfit, of course. Have a sensational Christmas. My one wish this Christmas… If unenlightened men were no object, education for every girl in the world. If money were no object, some Dior fine jewellery. But I’ll settle for a Bulgari hotel spa day.
My fantasy Christmas... Would be spent on a desert island with my wife and dogs. It would beat my worst Christmas ever when I had the flu and was in bed for the entire time; it was awful but memorable.
My most memorable Christmas was... Spent at Claridge’s Hotel; I walked to midnight mass in Chelsea with a friend through the snow, and walking back to Claridge’s through a white, deserted London was dazzling.

“IF EVER THERE’S A TIME TO BE FLAMBOYANT, IT’S CHRISTMAS” The most wonderful time of the year is also the moment to throw out your personal fashion rules, says Trish Halpin, editor-in-chief of Marie Claire magazine “Well put together” is probably one of the best compliments I’ve ever received. While those three little words are hardly overblown or particularly enthusiastic, what you have to bear in mind is that they were uttered by one of the UK’s top fashion stylists, so – to me – are the equivalent of One Direction being told by Elvis that they can sing. As the editor-in-chief of a women’s glossy magazine, you would expect me to know something about style and imagine that I spend a fair proportion of my salary on eye-wateringly expensive clothes. But I am first and foremost a journalist, and the truth is I’ve never been a fashion obsessive. Certainly not on the scale of the hardcore editors and bloggers you see in streetstyle pictures at London Fashion Week. But I do love clothes, and over many years have cultivated what I like to think is a stylish, understated look with a collection of well-cut dresses, pretty skirts, tailored jackets and yes, budgetbusting accessories. So how then do I explain the section of my wardrobe that is the complete opposite? Those hangers loaded with shimmering metallics and glitzy bling? Or the rack of shoes that includes cherryred sky-scraper pumps and hardly worn
bejewelled heels – totally impractical but oh-so beautiful? The answer is Christmas. From as far back as I can remember, come late autumn when excitement for the festive season starts to build, something happens to my style barometer, and it skips the dial into fashion-adventuress mode. Over the years I’ve parted with my hard-earned cash for spray-on silver trousers (so tight I had to jump up and down ten times to pull them up), tartan hotpants (worn with opaque tights and knee-high boots no less) and a strapless, beaded dress so heavy I could hardly walk in it – heaven help anyone unfortunate enough to rub up alongside me in that number. Ouch! If ever there’s a time to be flamboyant or behave just a little bit risqué, Christmas is it. While I completely agree that the Little Black Dress is essential for every woman’s wardrobe, my advice is to save it for the rest of the year – it will always look chic come spring, summer or autumn. Instead try something a little more daring and out of your comfort zone. Last year I bought a dazzlingly gold, knee-length dress and wore it with a jet necklace and black satin heels. It may have elicited numerous turkey-roasting jokes from my husband (I still contest the whole houseoffraser.co.uk
Bacofoil thing) but it certainly reflected (sorry, terrible pun) my mood when I hit the dance floor at the office party. This year, I’m going down the shimmer route again with a 1960s-inspired mini-dress à la Miu Miu (completely age inappropriate, but that’s exactly my point). Or maybe something very fluffy, picking up on winter’s hot fuzz trend.
“COME LATE AUTUMN WHEN THE FESTIVE SEASON STARTS TO BUILD, SOMETHING HAPPENS TO MY FASHION BAROMETER” I might even wear one large earring – it’s the only way to do jewellery this season, don’t you know. As a busy working mother, Christmas can be overwhelming. Work deadlines pull forward, hand-writing cards takes forever and choosing original gifts for the same people seems to get more challenging each year. So buying a new outfit just for me is a treat that I can look forward to. And once all the hard work is done, the party hangovers are behind me and I’m lifting a huge turkey out of the oven wearing a pink geometricprint dress, I will smile in the knowledge that while some things in life need to be reassuringly predictable, fashion never does.

Homeware designer Emma realised there was a gap in the market for pottery that was both beautiful and practical after failing to find a special cup and saucer gift for her mum. In 1985 her company was born, and she’s now one of the most fashionable names in dinnerware.
“I love Oxford Street for a mad, full-on Christmas experience and then I retreat home to my iPad to buy online. I like to shop very early and try and do it in a controlled way, one lovely thing for each person. I really like my gift wrap to have one look, whether it’s Emma Bridgewater wrapping or brown paper with photographs as gift tags. Come December, I try to make plenty of time for carols and watching films at home with the family in the holidays.” »

ORLA KIELY Irish designer Orla has singlehandedly made fabulous 1970s prints fashionable again, and her signature leaf print can be found on everything from her covetable bags to iPhones.
“Every November I think about getting organised but Christmas creeps up and I always find myself with two weeks to go and I still haven’t bought anything. Then, I’ll put a day aside and spend it shopping with my husband. Now that my boys are a bit older (17 and 19) they are easy to buy for and I love picking out unusual things that people will find interesting. We always go back to Dublin for Christmas and I will disappear with everything on Christmas Eve for a big wrap. It’s a crazy and busy time, but lovely.” »

JAKKI PAY
“CHRISTMAS IS THE TIME FOR COSY JUMPERS”
As design director at House of Fraser for the last five years, Jakki heads up the product selection in stores making sure they tick the trend, price and quality boxes. And the same goes for her Christmas shopping tactics.
“Because I travel a lot for work I try and do bits as I go and start my Christmas shopping in September, buying a few things each month. Lots of my family are abroad so I have to pick things that are easy to post. We live in a tiny cabin in the woods, so for us Christmas is all about battening down the hatches and lighting the fire. It’s very, very traditional. My husband and I always wear a cosy jumper on Christmas day so my gift to myself this year is a dark green Dickins & Jones knit which has a beautiful hand-stitched tree – it’s fun but tasteful.” »

“SLIPPERS AND BAGS ARE ALWAYS ON OUR LIST”
“I have four teenage children as well as a lot of extended family who visit over Christmas so I have to plan and shop ahead. My children do their lists in October and then we will pick a few things from each. My husband and I swap lists, too. I always have a handbag on my wish-list and there’s a pair of slippers on his without fail! Come Christmas, we’ll be at home in Northern Ireland and the atmosphere is great – we spread all the gifts under the tree and I put music on and light a few candles. It’s manic with so much family but I love it.” »

“A GREAT ACCESSORY CAN LAST FOR YEARS AND DEFY TRENDS”
THIABA DIALLO A personal shopper in London’s busy Oxford Street store, Thiaba’s style consultations match customers’ preferences with the perfect products, and with a little signature style shake-up, boost flagging confidence levels, too.
“At Christmas everyone gets an outfit; putting looks together is what I know best, so why not? Even my young son gets an outfit; I always buy him toys, too, but inevitably there’ll be a jumper, shirt and shoes to match in the mix. I love glitter and sparkle, and Christmas fashion embodies that, even if it’s just an embellishment on the neckline of a dress. It’s the only time you can really wear something with a bit of shine and it makes you feel like a celebrity.” »

DEAN HEALEY
“A COOL CORKSCREW IS ALWAYS A BIG HIT”
Head of visual creative in the brand department at House of Fraser, Dean is a creative connoisseur, crafting standout window displays in stores nationwide. And when it comes to creating Christmas, it’s a 365-days-a-year job...
“As a kid who always wanted to work in retail, Christmas really is the best project of the year. It’s corny but it’s such a magical time and I love being right at the heart of it. I spend a lot of time thinking about the gifts I’ll buy and making sure they’re thoughtful. My parents are easiest to please; a classic bag for mum, and a Merino wool jumper for dad. To set it all off, I colourcoordinate the wrapping – cards, ribbon, paper, bows, tags. The presentation is as much a talking point as the gifts are!” For more gift ideas go to houseoffraser.co.uk

“IT’S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS” Showing people you care at Christmas isn’t about the value of your gift, but in making it personal, says columnist Clover Stroud The heavy weight of the Christmas stocking on the end of my bed, accompanied by the rustle of the wrapped gifts it contained and the citrusy zest of the tangerine I knew I’d find in its toe, is my most vivid memory of early childhood. Back then, the happiest Christmas mornings were those spent with a gaggle of cousins, waking at dawn to rip through that stocking with unbridled delight. If I close my eyes, I can still hear the shrieks of excitement as we piled into one bed, our haul of new crayons, wind-up bath toys, a doll with her own magic milk bottle and glittery nail varnish, scattered around the golden pool of chocolate coins which vanished in the folds of the faded chintz eiderdowns. That excitement of waking to a fully laden stocking hasn’t diminished with age. The run up to Christmas is rarely anything other than exhausting, with guest beds to make up, a turkey to stuff and four children to be posted off to bed, but I still invariably find myself, on Christmas Eve, stuffing stockings with the same childish treats that delighted me over three decades before. I treasure the sight of my children’s faces as they rustle through their stockings before breakfast. Then delight again as they rip through the huge pile of gifts under the tree before lunch. But the true art of giving
is found in something more precious than the material pleasures they symbolise. The right gifts are an expression of love and attention. Witnessing your musicloving teenage nephew crack into a smile as he unwraps that pair of headphones you’d heard he wanted, your mother’s quiet joy at a set of fabulous new baking trays or your best friend’s unashamed delight at that really big bottle of her favourite perfume you surprise her with, speaks volumes, and tells the receiver you’ve really been listening to them. This is the best message at the heart of the perfect gift. Of course, finding the right presents for everyone can be a time-consuming business and not something that – ideally – should be attempted on Christmas Eve. There is something satisfying about gathering special gifts as you chance upon them throughout the year as you explore new places – local crafts, gift-shop finds and the like. Then, they become a beautiful reminder of the year that’s passed. When the darker nights and chill of autumn arrives, I’ll start stashing these presents in a top drawer in my bedroom. I love the quiet evenings I spend wrapping each one throughout December, spreading sheets of multi-coloured paper and miles of glittery ribbon out on the kitchen table. houseoffraser.co.uk
These nights add to the mounting sense of anticipation that creeps through the house as each door on the Advent calendar is opened. The time invested in choosing beautiful gifts is also a reminder that perfect presents don’t have to cost a fortune. One of my favourite presents ever is a clover-shaped pendant my niece found on her last holiday. It’s not valuable, at least not in monetary terms, but I love slipping my fingers through it when it hangs around my neck;
“I LOVE THE QUIET EVENINGS I SPEND WRAPPING GIFTS WITH MULTI-COLOURED PAPER AND MILES OF GLITTERY RIBBON” a physical reminder of my relationship with my much-loved niece, who I barely see enough due to the demands of daily life. Of course, I’m not saying that I don’t love the luxurious, spoiling treats my husband in particular is so good at hiding under our tree – the cashmere dressing gown, a beautiful Mulberry purse I’ve been lusting after for months, or a huge bottle of Chanel No5. But it’s the pleasure we can all get from reminding one another how much we really love them that is my favourite gift, year after year.

Sofia Coppola & Marc Jacobs BE AU T Y,
S T Y L E ,
MOV I E S
ON DRESSING Sofia: There are lots of moments in movies where the style has inspired me – I love Catherine Deneuve’s black dress playing the queen in The Hunger and Lauren Hutton in American Gigolo.
M USE S
Marc: Different scents take you back to a memory or evoke certain places you’ve been. We talked about this when we were making the fragrance Daisy Dream; does it have this kind of freshness? Does it have a sparkle? Is there a lightness to it? You’re looking for emotions, not just smells.
Beyond the glitz and glamour of Christmas, it’s the people that make it special. So what better time to celebrate friendship? We talked to lifelong pals, award-winning film director Sofia Coppola of The Bling Ring and Lost in Translation fame, and fashion designer Marc Jacobs, about being friends and a few other favourite things… ON FRIENDSHIP Marc: I remember when I first encountered Sofia. I was working for the fashion brand Perry Ellis in 1993 and Sofia came to the store with her mum. Sofia: I must have been 20 or something. I was coming to New York and asked Mum if I could visit the store and I met Marc as he came out. My mum was kind of surprised that we just started talking about music and bands we like. Marc: We clicked immediately and then I cast her in one of my first Marc Jacobs Women’s fragrance campaigns, which we shot with the fashion photographer Juergen Teller.
A N D
When I meet friends in the Beverly Hills Hotel Polo Lounge in LA, I think, ‘oh I have to wear a cream silk blouse like Hutton did’, so I think there are definitive style moments in film I reference. ON SCENT Sofia: When I was a teenager, having bottles of perfume on the dressing table felt like a very important aspect to being a woman. Fragrance is really connected to your character I think. There’s a scene in Bling Ring where a character sprays on a perfume in order to try and take on the identity of someone else. If you want to be like someone else, wearing their perfume can be very evocative. ONLINE
— ON MOBILE — IN STORE
ON MUSIC Sofia: Music is always important to me. I love the music duo Sleigh Bells at the moment and the dreamy aspect of one of their songs, so we ended up using it for the Daisy ad campaign that I shot. Marc: Sofia always has great soundtracks to her movies. They’re all perfect for the film but they’re all so different; in Lost in Translation music has a real impact. ON MEETING YOUR IDOLS Sofia: I met Jessica Lange for dinner with Marc and he’s a big fan of hers. I remember growing up with her in films; she has a coolness and strength while still being laid back. Marc: I love Jessica. We went to the Met Ball together. She was and still would be my dream date. It’s a rare thing when people hold up to how you imagined they’d be.
