On March 11 2011, Japan was hit with what was believed to be an 8.9 earthquake off the coast of Tohoku, northern Honshu. Since then the U.S Geological Survey and Japanese seismologists have updated the magnitude of the earthquake to 9.0, making it the fourth largest ever earthquake, and the largest earthquake in Japan since modern recordings began over a hundred years ago. This devastating earthquake was preceded by another only two days previously with a magnitude of 7.3 that led to over 15 aftershocks of magnitudes 4 and above over the two days leading up to March 11. At 06.18 UTC on March 11 an earthquake was measured at Magnitude 7.9 and quickly revised to 8.8 and then 8.9 as fear struck the east coast of Japan. Tsunami alerts came in with warnings of waves in excess of 3 metres and at least 20 aftershocks continued to hit at Magnitudes of 6+, with one reaching 7.1; almost as large as the original earthquake on March 09 2011. When the Tsunami hit the east coast reports measured it at 6 metres in height, with boats, homes and bridges swept away by the onslaught. All train services were taken out and the Tsunami continued to grow, with some towns, such as Kurihara-shi Tsukidate, being all but completely destroyed. Reports of deaths and missing people then began to filter in, communication problems due to damages began to occur and two hours after the earthquake and onsluaght of the Tsunami, Japan

called for international assistance, which was positively responded to by hundreds of countries. Sendai was almost completely destroyed with waves of nearly 10m reported and the Kanto and Fukushima provinces came in with the first death reports. Fires occurred all over the affected provinces and damages continued to increase as a series of waves hit the already devastated areas along the east coast of Japan. The bad news then worsened as Hukushima Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station declared that everyone within a 3 km radius of the Nuclear Power Station needed to be evacuated in case of a nuclear disaster. Those within a 10km radius were evacuated as a precaution, until about 8.30 UTC when the nuclear power plant actually exploded and those within a 20km radius were ordered to evacuate. 50,000 rescuers deployed to north-eastern Japan and reports came in of 69,000 people sheltering in Tokyo Disneyland, over 6.4 million homes without power and 6.8 million homes without the use of their fixed telephone lines. International aid soon arrived, including aid from the US of 13,00 troops, 20 naval vessels and 140 aircraft to help with the emergency services. While relief items are reaching the majority of the affected areas, the Government of Japan has had to put a ban on 11 types of vegetable found to have radiation

contamination sold close to the Fukushima Power Plant, with high levels of radiation still being detected almost 40km away. As of March 29 2011 the number of dead and missing due to the earthquake/tsunami and aftermath is over 27,000, with over 11,000 of those dead. With, therefore, over 16,000 people still missing and the figures continuing to rise due to the influx of bad weather conditions on top of the natural catastrophy, the death toll could still rise substantially. In 1923, the Great Kanto Earthquake recorded over $214 billion in economic losses, and the estimates of damage from the March 11 off the east coast of Honshu earthquake have exceeded this figure already, adding together direct and indirect costs. Historically, earthquakes in Japan have always caused a large amount of damage due to high infrastructure costs, but this is believed to be the most costly by far. With over $300 million being donated in aid of the relief effort through private organisations, anonymous people, and Japan’s Red Cross Society, hopefully some of this burden will be alleviated as the repair of Japan’s devastated areas continues well into the third week after the March 11 earthquake.

Traditional Architecture Uncovered ► The owners of this lovely Larnaca building had no idea what they were going to find underneath when they stripped back the walls and the false ceilings. But it is absolutely stunning. They've used a local builder and are now in the final stages of rearranging and restocking the showroom and creating a painting gallery. The 'formal' opening is imminent and Larnaca News is just waiting for an invite and the chance to capture some great pics of the finished restoration. Can you guess where it is? Read all about it in next month's Larnaca News. On the Road to Safer and Greener Motorbikes ► A new law to make scooters, mopeds and motorbikes safer, greener and easier to sell EU-wide is being hatched in the European Parliament. Making motorbikes and scooters safer and greener would help beat city centre congestion hazards and pollution, say Members of the European Parliament. A new EU law now being drawn up there aims to accelerate the takeup of safety and anti-pollution technology and also make it

easier to put new machines on the market. On Tuesday 22 March, MEPs met industry experts to get their input for the new law. It is still early days, but the MEP steering the law through Parliament has already put some ideas on the table. These are outlined below:

do something to reduce pollution, says the rapporteur, as two-wheeler emissions are disproportionally high. However, making bikes greener should not mean making them too expensive. Most bikes and scooters are now quite affordable and they should stay that way.

Safety ► Many more bikers, scooter and moped riders are seriously injured or killed than car drivers. Technology cannot replace riding safely, but it can help. Installing an anti-lock braking system (ABS) on all new bikes could cut the number of accident deaths by 20% within 10 years. Today ABS systems are still expensive, but suppliers say prices could fall to €100 per unit if more were sold.

► On-board diagnostic (OBD) systems would not only make it easier to repair bikes, but also to keep track of emissions and alert riders to technical failures.

► Automatic daytime lights, like those on some cars, could help to make bikers more visible to other road users. ► As many young people get hurt as a result of tweaking their bikes to go faster, the rapporteur also wants to see a major crackdown on illegal tampering. Greener bikes ► Manufacturers should

► Eco-labelling could also help consumers choose the greenest bike or scooter. Easier marketing ► It should be made easier for manufacturers to place a new bike, moped or scooter on the EU market. If a vehicle meets standards in one country, the manufacturer should be able to sell it anywhere in the EU. ► Unsafe and polluting vehicles should not be able to enter the EU. It must be ensured that only safe and genuine bikes, mopeds and scooters are sold on the European market - to the benefit of both bikers and manufacturers.

Charity Holiday of A Life Time I had a call from a guy named Alan Austin and he wanted me to highlight the great things the charity he supported and indeed helped out with was doing right here in Cyprus. The charity he was so entusiastically describing was Holiday Of A Life Time.

We are located on Mackenzie 200m from the castle fort Tel: 99 35 85 30 Piale Pasha 100, 6026 Larnaka

This charity provides holidays for underprivileged, deserving children that would never, in normal circumstances, dream of having. The children may be disabled, have special needs or be orphans, from low income families, special schools or children’s homes. Normally they are aged between 10 and 13. They are chosen because it is believed that they will get some special measure of benefit from the holiday. You can find out more about the Charity and events it holds by visiting www.hoalt.org. This Charity is organised by the 'Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes'(RAOB) otherwise known as the 'Buffs'. For more information on the RAOB and other fundraising events for Charities please visit http://www.raob-cyprus.org/html/james_mercury.html As the 'buffs' are behind raising the funds for this year's kids, Alan decided to organise a Charity Darts Open at the All Sports Bar in Larnaca (opposite NEXT) on Sunday the 1st of May from 1pm. It's an Open so everyone is invited to play or participate in the 5* Raffle. Prizes include: Trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and the winner of the competition will receive an overnight stay for 2 at a luxury 5* Hotel. Raffle prizes include: Brand New Laptop, Digital Camera, Blu-ray Player, Hp all-in-one Colour/Print/Scan/Copier, Day Pass Family of 4 to Ayia Napa WaterWorld, Full Body Massage and more fantastic prizes. Cyprus Events 6th Cyprus Salsa Congress

The venue: The luxury five star Grecian Park Hotel, Cape Creco, Ayia Napa. The Occassion: the 6th Annual Cyprus Salsa Congress. The Larnaca News were there to cover this exhilarating event and of course partake in a little Salsa along the way. If you are familiar with Salsa and Latin dance you will know exactly how the weekend unfolds. This fun packed weekend is not for the faint hearted. It's all go go go. Bags of energy are needed if you want to keep up with everything that's on offer. I can only describe

it as a non-stop dance, dance, dancing and more dancing, oh and still more dancing, weekend. It was however the Cyprus Salsa Congress and no Cyprus weekender would be complete without a little partying and lessons by the pool. In fact the Grecian Park Hotel put on an extra day to do just that but alas one of us had to go back to work on the Monday to write this article. Next year I'm definitely booking the day off. The weekend starts on arrival with receipt of your workshop and show time schedule.

This is when you decide which of the great dance workshops you will take advantage of over the weekend. When I said the weekend wasn't for the faint hearted I meant it. There are back to back workshops running all day long for 3 days. You can learn to Tango in the morning, followed by some Bachata before grabbing a light lunch, time for a quick shower and then off to practice those sexy salsa moves finished off with a bit of partner work and, if you're still full of energy, a belly dance before piling in to the dining room for a well earned meal. No watching what you eat. You're sure to have lost a few pounds and energy levels need replacing for the evening when the dancing really starts going. If you think you danced a lot during the day then wait for the evening. The hardened Salseros have it all planned out. Back to the rooms after your meal for a quick snooze to recharge those batteries. Shower, change, dancing shoes in the bag and off for a night of, yes you guessed it, dance, dance and more dance. The organisers Christos Shakallis and Giorgos Odysseos have brought together performers and intructors from 20 different countries around the world and every evening we were privileged to see these fantastic shows. very best International Salsa names were there to perform including Spain's World Champions Adrian & Anita. My personal favourites Leon Rose (UK) and U-Tribe (France). Other big performers included Tony Lara & Dani (Italy) who were hillarious, ST Mambo (Israel), Stephanos & Valentina (Greece), Annibal & Julia (Argentina) and many more from UK, Greece, Spain, Italy, Jordan and Lebanon. Big thanks to Sponsors Cyprus Airways. It's no easy task to bring all these performers together. At a time of political unrest around the world it amazed me that so many people of all nationalities joined together with one common goal and no barriers to simply Salsa. Salsa has no discriminations. People from all backgrounds, ages, cultures, races and religions mix together happily and all are made very welcome. Perhaps the politicians and religious leaders should take note. If you missed out on this year's Salsa congress then make 2011 the year you start to Salsa. Cyprus and indeed Larnaca has some great venues and instructors to get you started and we will be featuring some of them in the coming year so by next year you'll be fit and ready to salsa until you drop. If you'd like furhter informatioin for next year's event or just want to have a look at the photo gallery then log on to www.salsacyprus.com, email: info@salsacyprus.com or telephone the SalsaCyprus team on 8000 0909 LN

They have also supported the cardiology unit and special baby unit of Paphos General Hospital. There are also plans afoot for an underwater sea walk in September. EVENTS Mother's Day A Mother's Love By Chrissie Flint Mother’s Day (Mothering Sunday) is the day when children of all ages - the world over - think of their mother and visit or telephone her and send her a gift to show how much she is appreciated. Whilst Mother’s Day in the UK, Ireland and Nigeria is traditionally celebrated on the 4th Sunday in Lent, in other countries similar celebrations are held on other days. In Norway, Mother’s Day is celebrated on 13 February, whilst many Eastern European countries mark the day on 8 March – International Women’s Day. For more than 74 countries including Australia, Canada, Italy and Cyprus, Mother’s Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May, which this year falls on 8 May. Mother’s Day honours mothers and motherhood and its origins can be traced back to 16th century Britain when it was called Laetere Sunday and it was a day off for all the youngsters ‘in service’ (domestic servants) or who were training as apprentices. On this day they would return home to see their mothers and many of them picked wild flowers along the way to give her as a gift. In the United Sates the idea was started by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and today it is the most popular day in the year for long distance phone calls! It is still traditional to give mothers flowers on this day and in China and Japan a gift of red carnations or roses is the favourite choice, whilst in the Czech Republic more flowers are actually sold on Mother’s Day than Valentines Day! In Bangladesh, there are special television programmes for women all day long and in Indonesia as well as gifts of flowers, mums compete in a variety of cookery competitions. Whether you will be celebrating Mother’s Day now or next month it is fun to plan some special treats for your mother… ► All mums deserve breakfast in bed! To make things fun why not cut her toast in the shape of a heart with a biscuit cutter? 20 LN April 2011

► Outside her bedroom door or on the seat of her favourite chair you can make a heart of rose petals. ► Some local restaurants organise special celebration menus, but if your pocket money doesn’t run to this, what about packing a special picnic with Dad’s help and visiting somewhere new or enjoying part of the coastal walk at Ayia Napa? ► If you don’t have much pocket money, make mum a special dinner and make her pile of rice into a heart shape or draw a heart in her mashed potato… Mums love getting presents, especially flowers, so why not pick a bunch of the common wild flowers like the crown daisies and asphodels? There are plenty more gift ideas though... ► Make a pretty frame for a photograph of you. An adult can help cut the frame from cardboard and you can decorate it with a collage of paper squares in her favourite colours. ► Cover a small box with pretty paper and line it with tissue paper. Inside put all her favourite things – a pretty soap, a bar of chocolate, a box of herbal tea, her favourite magazine, a pretty box of tissues etc and write on a label to slip inside ‘Mummy’s/Mum’s Pamper Box’. ► Make a special cake for her and on it write Mummy/Mum in chocolate buttons. ► Make a set of ten vouchers for Mum using card and her favourite colours and she can exchange the vouchers with you for different jobs – car washing, washing up, dusting (mums LOVE these!) ► Suggest to Dad that you take Mum away for the weekend – as it is low season a number of the local hotels and villa companies are offering discounts and it is fun to spend some time discovering Paphos or Troodos. The most important thing to remember is that whatever you do, to it enthusiastically with lots of love and don’t forget to tell Mum what a special person she is!

Easter is the biggest festival in the Greek Orthodox calendar and everyone is quietly making preparations for it. Whether you are in Cyprus on holiday or are living here but are not Greek Orthodox, you are warmly welcomed to join in all the festivities and it really is to be recommended – especially the beautiful midnight church service on Easter Saturday. This year, like the last, the Greek Orthodox Easter falls on the same weekend as the Roman Easter (22-24 April). The build up to Easter began with Green Monday, which was on 7 March. Cypriots of all ages began the Lenten Fast, which will not be broken until after the midnight service. The fast prohibits meat and dairy products in the diet and you have probably noticed foods in the supermarkets labelled with the word nistisima, meaning that they are suitable for those on the fast. Lent is generally a sombre time as everyone prepares themselves spiritually for Easter. You have probably heard the special anthem dedicated to Our Lady being sung in your local church every Friday evening. On the Saturday before Easter, our part of the island is definitely the place to be as there are great celebrations in Larnaca to mark the feast day of Saint Lazarus, the Patron Saint of the town. The celebrations are focused on the beautiful church, which bears the Saint’s name in the old part of the town. The following day is Palm Sunday, and women and children make little baskets from woven palm leaves to fill with wild flowers for the church. During the service the priest carries an icon of Christ around the perimeter of the church in commemoration of Christ's journey into Jerusalem. On this day too, many of the housewives bring small bags containing olive leaves to Church.

These bags are blessed by the Priest and remain in the church for forty days, before being taken home to use for incense. The week leading up to Easter is Holy Week and church services are held throughout the day. The Lenten fast becomes even stricter and even olive oil is omitted from the diet. Housewives are busy spring cleaning and buying new clothes and shoes for each family member which is said to bring good luck. Eggs are hard-boiled and dyed using rizani roots (which can be bought in the vegetable market in Larnaca) and onion skins which turn them red and gold. The streets are decorated with large models of Easter eggs and banners with the words Kalo Paska. On Easter Thursday, housewives make scores of Flaounes - many of them baking them in their ‘beehive’ ovens or begging space in their local baker’s ovens! The Flaounes are pastry squares or triangles that are filled with Easter cheese made from goat and sheep’s milk. Every housewife has her own family recipe - some flaounes are savoury with mint and others made sweet with raisins. If you would like to try one they can be bought in all bakers and supermarkets and taste great, served sliced and either warmed or toasted. Good Friday is the holiest of days and all the women head to the church with armfuls of creamcoloured flowers to decorate the Epitaphios (tabernacle) containing an icon of Christ. Everyone returns home in time for lunch - a special soup made with vinegar and lentils called Faki Xidati. The soup reminds everyone of Christ's walk to Calgary, and how when asked for water he was given vinegar. In the evening the priest leads a procession with the Epitaphios and is escorted by children

carrying sparklers and lanterns. On Saturday evening, a large bonfire is lit in the church yard to remind everyone of the burning of Judas Iscariot. At about 11.30p.m everyone walks to church – each carrying one of the special Easter candles that can be bought in local shops and supermarkets (if you would like to attend the service, it is essential that you take one with you) At midnight the church is plunged into darkness and the priest lights his candle proclaiming Christos Anesti Christ is Risen - and in turn he lights other candles and slowly and surely the whole church is bathed in golden candlelight and everyone greets each other with the words of the priest – Christos Anesti - and receives the reply Alithos Anesti – he is truly risen. Outside the church the merriment begins with teenagers setting off fireworks and bangers. Once everyone has returned home, the Lenten fast is then broken with avgolemono (egg, rice and lemon soup). On Easter Sunday the barbecue is lit and souvla is cooked for the extended family (everyone tries to get home for Easter especially relatives living and studying abroad). In the afternoon, whilst the adults relax and exchange news, the children challenge each other to a game like ‘conkers’ using the dyed eggs. Family and friends pop in to exchange greetings and it is tradition the first time you see someone after the midnight service to greet each other with the priest’s proclamation Christos Anesti…Alithos Anesti.

In a quick movement of Planet Earth (a massive earthquake in Japan, followed by a 10 metre high Tsunami) and the subsequent meltdown of nuclear cells in Nuclear Plants, it seems that so called safe nuclear power has come to an end, in Japan at least. The Nuclear Plants in Japan are melting down and every day more and more disturbing news of potential massive radiation and poisoning of countless humans, plants and animals are more and more likely. For the last few decades, nuclear power has looked good compared to the dirty coal industry and the ever rising cost and pollution of fossil fuels used to power plants producing ever-increasing demand for electric energy; Chernobyl and other minor nuclear accidents were almost forgotten. But, in mere moments, Mother Nature showed the world how vulnerable nuclear power plants really are to the whims of the unexpected. Today, tens of thousands of people in Japan have been exposed to dangers of radiation and this danger is rising by the day. The evacuation zone has been extended from a 10km to a 30-40km radius. How far will it go? And is this disaster the only one we can expect? In the Natural News, at the beginning of 2011, Mike Adams wrote: “I believe the changes that will occur in the next two years will rock the foundations of our economies, governments and belief systems. In the end, after considerable turmoil, I see a great expansion of human consciousness and maturing of the human race.”(www. www.larnacanews.com

by Dr. Mirjana Duvnjak, MD, MT, FDN&M Practitioner

naturalnews.com) After witnessing the unfolding revolutionary movements in the Arab countries and the catastrophic events in Japan, his predictions seem to be coming true. One of the big steps for Japan now is to find a new source of producing clean energy in huge quantities to power the third biggest economy in the world. Humankind in general needs to turn to a breakthrough clean, safe energy source, which doesn't require burning coal or radioactive fuel rods. Solar and wind energy are not viable for large scale, worldwide use due to the need of rare metals (from China) for producing solar panels, and the noise pollution and endangerment of bird species from wind power. Cheaper and safer alternative technologies such as Low Energy Nuclear Reactions “cold fusion" already exists, and has done for almost twenty years, but the 'big boys' in the industry and conventional technologies have invested too much in fossil fuels to give up so easily. Profit is the king of today’s world. But Japan now urgently needs to get serious about researching free energy technologies. They are not actually “free”, but rather, energy channelling devices which can use waste energy of the universe to produce electricity and other

forms of energy necessary for our life on earth. In fact, famous physicists such as Stephen Hawking in his latest book 'Grand Design' explains that the whole universe can give energy from nothing; its own individual parts (vacuum, black matter, and so on) can't. The suppression of free energy technologies, GMO food production, Pharmaceutical, unnatural products has to come to an end if we humans want to survive and save Mother Earth from total destruction. Every man and woman has to start making changes (choosing natural foods without chemicals and additives and taking care of his/her own health). We have to live with natural lows, not against them if we want to evolve into a race of beings with greater humility and deeper appreciation of Mother Nature and her powers. There are very few themes for decorating a home that capture the imagination quite like an Asian inspired theme. There are many reasons for this, including the rich colours, fabrics, and textures that are the hallmark of these themes. There is a simplistic elegance about Asian décor that is almost impossible to imitate in other methods. It is, simply put, stunning to walk into a room or a home that has been decorated in an Asian inspired motif. This is not one of the lesser styles of décor when it comes to price. This elegance comes at a rather high price for the average consumer. However, the sparseness of this home decorating style make it possible when other styles with this sort of price tag would not be possible. One of the most important things to remember when attempting to bring an Asian style of décor into your home is the heavy reliance upon colour and texture. Dining rooms are particularly stunning when decorated in an Asian style. In this situation not only can the implements added to the room serve to improve and enhance the décor but also the placemats on the table can serve as an important tool in establishing the theme of this supremely elegant room. Chopsticks and dishes, particularly tea servings, are other great enhancements to an Asian dining room. This is a room that many families will enjoy dining in. It is recommended that because of the expense involved in many Asian themed home decorating styles that only one or two rooms in the home should be created

based upon an Asian theme. This will keep the costs down as well as making those rooms focal points within the home rather than having the splendor lost among the excess. If you are having a rough time narrowing down the two rooms, the bathroom also makes an excellent room in which to incorporate an Asian inspired theme. This is a room in which people go to relax and wash away the worries and stress of their days. For this reason, it makes perfect sense that some of the more tranquil and relaxing design accents of an Asian décor would be appropriate. Candles, figurines, calligraphy (waterproof of course), and Asian artwork make excellent touches for a bathroom, as do the more tranquil colours of some Asian inspired rooms. Fountains can be added to the room for an added taste of relaxation. Be sure that there is plenty of storage space as clean lines and an uncluttered surface are also important for the overall peaceful affect you should be hoping to achieve. If either the dining room or bath are unappealing to your home decorating desires for an Asian theme you may want to take the theme into your bedroom. There are very few more romantic themes to incorporate into a bedroom than an Asian theme. You can use fabrics to create a very romantic atmosphere, rice paper window coverings to protect those inside from prying eyes, and

s n e t s i l s w e N a c a n r a L www.larnacanews.com

candles throughout the room to finish off the creation. Furnishings in this room should be sparse and uncluttered. And Asian screens can be used in order to 'section off' the room or hide the piles of laundry or cluttered areas that you do not wish to detract from the overall romance of the room. Fans make a lovely decoration for the walls in a bedroom as do Oriental art and framed calligraphy in the words of love. Use wall sconces and indirect lighting rather than harsh, glaring overhead lights. An Asian theme can be one of the most beautiful in the realm of home decorating if you are truly willing to invest the time and money it takes to do this theme properly. It can also be one of the most gaudy if you choose cheap and tacky decorations rather than quality accessories. If you choose to incorporate this theme into your home I hope you will keep that in mind while you are shopping. LN

LETTERS Expert Advice Don't Be Just Another Statistic by Mark Tilden Last year in England and Wales, over 300,000 people died without making a Will with the result that over £12,000,000 that could and should have gone to relatives and other beneficiaries ended up going to the Government instead. Now I know that the British Government (and most governments in Europe) need every penny (or Euro) that they can raise, but this is money that could have directly and immediately changed many peoples’ lives for the better. All for the sake of seeing a lawyer and making a Will. As I always say to the clients that I have seen over the last few years, coming to see me is not as painful as going to the dentist and although the outcome of seeing me is not as immediately obvious as going to see a dentist, I can assure you that, if you ignore seeing a lawyer to make a Will the results will be a lot more painful – certainly for those left behind than not going to see a dentist. People ask me sometimes, when is a good time to make a Will? The answer is of course, while you still can, as no-one can predict the future and none of us knows what is in store or around the corner. Do not put off until tomorrow what you should do today. Of all those 300,000 people who failed to make a Will there will be 300,000 sad stories to be told by relatives and beneficiaries as to the consequences of “Uncle Fred” 34 LN April 2011

or “Aunt Flo’s” failure to make a Will. The situation is even direr here in Cyprus for those that die without making a valid Will as the rules are even stricter and more draconian then they are in England. If you die without a Will in Cyprus, then the deceased’s share of his or her property will be divided not only between the survivor but also the deceased’s relatives to include children (whether from a first, second or third marriage) and possibly even parents and brothers and sisters. They could all be entitled to a “slice of the cake”. Further, the lawyer appointed to administer the estate will be able to charge a minimum fee which is in the region of 15% of the value of the deceased’s estate. The Law and rules of Probate and Inheritance in Cyprus are not the same as in England and do not assume therefore that everything you own will automatically pass to your spouse or partner. The only safe, sure and guaranteed way to make sure that what you think will happen to your assets after you have died is to make a Cypriot Will. Do not be one of the statistics for 2011 – if it is not too late to make New Year’s Resolutions then make 2011 the year that you made a Will.

What Innovation Can Do To Your Life! It's a talent that everyone has, yet they think they don't. The power of innovation. If you've ever marvelled at somebody's creative prowess, guess what, you can create and innovate too. It just takes time. Everyone is born creative. The box of crayons in kindergarten were not limited to those who possessed potential; because the truth is, everybody has potential. You know how long it took to learn to ride a bike or drive or to never commit the same mistake again? It's the same with innovation. It takes a bit of practice and a lot of time before this mind function comes easily when called. This article will teach you a few tips on how to bring innovation into your life. Don't listen to what other people say. Follow the beat of your own drum. Allowing for the input of other people will only bring cacophony to the music you are trying to make. If you have an original idea, don't waste your time and effort trying to make people understand. They won't. And the help you will probably get comes in the form of negative feedback. If all those geniuses of the world listened to their peers, we would probably still be living in the middle ages. Spend time on it. I cannot stress that enough, although, please do not mistake this tip to tell you to quit your day job entirely. Do not. This involves some tricky time management but with a little discipline you'll be able to squeeze both in. Exercise. Take a walk. Run a mile or two. Send all those endorphins coursing through your veins. Exercising certainly clears and relaxes your mind and allows for anything to pop up. www.larnacanews.com

Self Improvement 'Innovation'

Picture by Leva Klevina Record your dreams. Aren't some of them just the craziest things that your conscious mind would never have thought of? If you've had these dreams before, and I sure have, they only show you the untapped innovative power you have lying within. So jot down those notes. Those dreams may just create an innovative spark in you. Find your own style. You can always tell a Van Gogh from a Matisse. You know Hemingway wrote something by the choice of words on the paper. So it is the same with you. People will appreciate your innovation more because it is uniquely yours and that no one else would have thought of what you were thinking. That will let people see how valuable an asset you are. Don't hide behind nifty gadgets or tools. You don't need the most expensive set of paints to produce a masterpiece. You don't need some expensive fountain pen and really smooth paper for a bestseller. In fact, J.K. Rowling wrote the first book of the Harry Potter Series on bits of tissue. So what if you've got an expensive SLR camera if you're a rubbish photographer? Who cares if you've got a blinging laptop if you can't use it properly? The artist actually reduces the number of tools he has as he gets better at his craft: he knows what works and what

doesn't. Nothing will work without passion. What wakes you up in the mornings? What keeps the flame burning? What is the one thing that you'll die if you don't do? Sometimes people with talent are overtaken by the people who want it more. Think the hare and the tortoise. Ellen Degeneres once said that if you're not doing something that you want to do, then you don't really want to do it. And that's true. Sometimes you just want something so bad you become virtually unstoppable. And that is passion. Passion will keep you going. Don't worry about inspiration. You can't force it; inspiration hits when you least expect it to; for those unpredictable yet inevitable moments you should prepare. An idea could strike you on the bus, yet alas, you poor unfortunate soul; you have no sheet of paper to scribble down a thought that could change the world. Avoid these disasters. Have a pen and paper within arm's reach at all times. I hope this article has helped you bring more innovation into your life. Keep in mind that you're doing these things for your own satisfaction and not anybody else's. But soon enough they will notice, and everything should snowball from there. LN April 2011 LN 37

Will UK Public Pension Cuts affect you? A major Government report authored by former Labour Minister Lord Hutton recommends that 'gold-plated' final salary pensions for doctors, police, armed forces and other state workers are scrapped by 2015. Some six million state employees will be forced to sacrifice more of their salary to pay for less generous 'career average' schemes. It also recommends employees work at least until 60 years of age, with the official retirement age linked to the state pension age in the future. Many state workers are currently able to retire as early as 55 and receive their full pension entitlement. The Government indicated last year it intends to act on Lord Hutton's report in full. It will now consider the report and make a final decision. TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber warned public sector workers will 'pay much more for substantially less'. Some state workers can currently retire as young as 55. With Lord Hutton proposing a link to the state pension age, they may soon have to work until 66 or 68 to secure full pension benefits. Even members of the Armed Forces, police and firemen, who can currently go on a full pension as early as 50, will be told they will have to wait until they are 60 before they qualify. The dramatic move is part of a broader shakeup of state employees' retirement funds, which have created a ÂŁ1 trillion black hole in the public finances. Public pensions could grow from costing 1% of GDP each year to 1.4% of GDP over the next 20 years if the Government doesn't act, the Pensions Policy Institute reckons.

Your Finances Is Your Pension Still Locked Up? by Steve Carr

Steve Carr Fraser Mackinlay, Pension Consultant 'The move away from a final salary structure, with an increase in employee contributions, was the only tenable option available to Lord Hutton as the government looks to control the longterm costs of providing public sector pensions.' If you are already receiving income from your UK Pension then these proposed changes are unlikely to affect you. However if you worked in the UK Public Sector as say a School Teacher, Police, Fire Brigade, Local Council Worker or Civil Servant and your pension is currently frozen, then you can apply for a transfer value. Now is a good time to consider applying for a transfer value from your UK Pension Provider as the transfer value offered now will not be affected by future pension cuts. If you are now an overseas resident or plan to reside overseas soon then you are entitled to transfer your pension to a Qualifing Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme known as a QROPS. a host of buried memories, suffusing him with a sense of comfort and well-being. I’m home, he thought. “You like your “ome?” she said, as if reading his mind. The sun felt warm on his body, and the scent of roses seemed heady in the room. “Yes, I do”, he answered, completely truthfully. “I’ll get in some paper and start the fire”. He went out into the tiny courtyard, with its green canopy of grape vines, and its southern border of small, ancient olive trees, opened the heavy barn door, and peered into the murky, musty depths of its dark entrails. Webs of ancient arachnid occupation festooned the vast old beams, and there was the soft scuttling of other, mammalian inhabitants retreating from his sudden presence. In the far corner was an ancient oak sideboard, heavily carved, now coated in a thick layer of dust and debris. He waited a moment for his eyes to become accustomed to the different light, before going in, and opening one of its bottom drawers, hoping he’d find old papers or rags, to start his fire. It was packed with old photograph albums, and he lifted out the top one, its blue cover falling in two at his touch, and took it back to the house. The cat sat on his sports bag, purring quietly, but the girl must have gone into the other room. He opened the album curiously, feeling the nape of his neck suddenly alive with tension. There she stood, framed as if by intent, in the doorway of this same cottage, the girl, gazing at him out of the faded ochre of the old photograph, her arms full of just-gathered roses - Adeline, his grandmother, her name and the date, 1935, written in faded black ink beneath the picture. In the corner, the cat sneezed twice.

Have Your Say by The Editor Hello, Just to let you know I enjoy so much reading your film and game article every month. Hi, Firstly I'd like to say that I've been reading the Larnaca News for two years now and it keeps getting better every month. But sometimes I can't find a copy at the Carrefour near me because people take them so quickly...sometimes by the time I get there I miss it...I remember reading that you have a website I can read it on, can you tell me how to do that in simple English, because I'm not very good on computers... Much appreciated, - Jenny, Larnaca Dear Jenny, I know, I wish that we could print 50,000 copies a month too so that every single person who wants one can find one. Porsche and Ferrari are German and Italian sides of the same coin, interpretations of the sports car idea. Both founded by a dominant patriarch, both honed in racing, both more than 50 years old, both with engineering and styling integrity. Whether on the track of Le Mains or on the streets, the two have always been put head-tohead and compared. Even the most naive motorist associates these two names with both performance and style. We’ve decided to compare the methodical Porsche 911 Carrera 4S and the passionate Ferrari F430 because both of them astonish with their performance while attempting to maintain a reasonable amount of practicality, but do not pretend to be anything other than sports cars. A modern sports car should feature these characteristics: it should be started easily, maneuvered around town, blasted on a couple of country roads, it looks and performs the part on a racetrack, but at the same time it is very safe. The easier way to separate the two cars is by measuring figures since both of them have mastered the modern sports car requirements and basically there’s no other way to choose between these two phenomenal cars. What initially impresses is Ferrari's lightning fast 4-second 0-100km/h acceleration and thrilling exhaust tone. As the occupants are pinned to the seats, the new generation 4.3-litre V8 pushes out 368 snarling kilowatts. Porsche’s acceleration also offers that kick in the pants a super car should deliver, although it is 0.8 seconds slower

at the 100 km/kmark. With such acceleration performance, it comes natural for both cars to excel in the braking department. The two cars offer optional ceramic discs for impressive stopping. Porsche’s engine gets the upper hand as it is more refined and on the economy rank leaps ahead Ferrari with a 11.8 liters per 100 km as opposed to 18.3 liters. Both cars deliver the power through impressive 6-speed gearboxes and offer top rate handling performance. Both F430 and Carrera 4S offer great interior comfort and even if the space is limited, the occupants don't feel claustrophobic and flustered. Although an impressive mix of suede, carbon fiber and aluminum abound in the Ferrari, the Italians stand no chance when it comes to the high finish level attained by the Germans. Speed and silence are key elements for any super car. The look and appearance is the biggest draw card. The Carrera 4S is a typical Porsche, despite the new proportions. It is a great looking car, like any other 911 but somehow the styling no longer creates the jaw dropping reaction that the Ferrari does. Indeed, traditionalists may say that Porsche pays homage to its roots, but the truth is that Ferrari F430 simply draws the attention. However, even if Ferrari F430 takes your breath away with its appearance, the super car title goes to the Porsche Carrera 4S with a more complete all round package. LN

Introduction To Larnaca Football Clubs March's League Results by George Kasparis

The regular football season is now over, with all teams having played each other home and away. As you can see from the League table Apoel have come out on top, with Omonia, Anorthosis and our own Aek of Larnaca following behind. HOME As I explained to you all in the last issue these 4 teams will now play in a play off; each of the teams will carry forward their points total into a “Mini Group”. ERMIS Apoel start with 62 points; Omonia 50 points; Anorthosis AEK 45 points; Aek 42 points. There are a total of 18 points to play for, so although ANORTHOSIS Apoel are unlikely to be caught, it's going to be game on AEK for the rest of them. These next 3 games are vital for the remaining teams as the top team will get automatic qualification to the ERMIS Champions League, second and third place go into the Europa League and the fourth team will qualify for the ACHNAS Europa League only if either the 2nd or 3rd place finishers ERMIS win the Cyprus Cup. The financial rewards for all these teams are massive too. Not only do they play 3 matches in APOP front of a full house, they could also qualify for Europe. The relegation zone is another mine field. As it stands the bottom 2 teams are already relegated. Therefore the next OLYMPIAKOS 4 teams (Achna, Ermis, Alki and Apop Paphos) will play in their own “Mini group” again with their points collected ERMIS from the regular season carried forward. The team that ALKI finishes in last place in the Mini group will go down. As you can see our own Alki and Ermis are unfortunately in that ALKI group so fingers crossed they manage to survive. I hope you've understood all of that, if not, call me on 96600772 and I'll be glad to explain further. Finally a word about the Cyprus Cup. We are now down to the last 4 (Semi-Finals): Omonia, Anorthosis, Apollon and Ethnikos Achnas. None of our Larnaca teams managed to get through. If Apollon win the cup then they will take the fourth place in the Europa League and eliminate the fourth team in the Mini group. This is why it’s important to AEK of Larnaca that they at least end up third or hope that Omonia or Anorthosis win the cup. I personally will be off to the match on Saturday where AEK take on the mighty Apoel.

Astronomy Global Astronomy Month 2011 April 2011 will again be a busy month for amateur and professional astronomers, educators and astronomy enthusiasts as Global Astronomy Month (GAM) returns for its second edition. The annual event, organised by Astronomers Without Borders, celebrates the Universe in the spirit of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 cornerstone project "100 Hours of Astronomy." The KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY, being the Cyprus National Coordinator for Astronomers Without Borders and also the National Coordinator for the Global Astronomy Month 2011 reserved dates in April 2011 for public outreach, hands-on activities, observing sessions and more while sharing the enthusiasm with others across the globe during Global Astronomy Month. Everyone is invited to join the programs of local and global events. This is the second edition of GAM, after its launch last year, when Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) coordinated seven global events dedicated to remote observing, fighting light pollution, world peace, observations of the sky and cultural manifestations, as well as encouraging the organisation of local events. The month’s program involves the lord of the rings on April 2/3, designated as Saturn Watch. With the planet at its closest to Earth, it is a perfect night to admire the unequaled beauty of the ringed planet. On April 9 the Global Star Party will unfold as darkness sweeps around the Earth. This is the night to set up your telescopes and share the wonders of the sky with others. From April 10 to 16 it's Lunar Week as our gaze turns toward Earth's natural satellite. Just as the Moon has captured our imagination for millennia, it never fails to fascinate with close-up views of its craters and more. Educational and cultural events dedicated to the Moon are also planned. On April 17 we switch from night to day, dedicating ourselves to our closest star on SunDay. The month closes on a high point with a peak - of meteors. On April 21/22 get comfortable in something warm and spend the night scanning the sky for meteors caused by debris left behind by Comet Thatcher. An incredible show awaits during Lyrids Watch. In addition, Remote Observing Programs are being scheduled and a Cosmic Concert. If you need another reason to join us during Global Astronomy Month, try these: ► Participate in an internationally recognised project by joining the KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY ► Visit our planetarium, observatory, astronomy club and science center; ► Let young people inspire, look up and wonder. "There's something for everyone" “Ride that wave of excitement in the discovery of our Universe" 50 LN April 2011

espite having reviewed every instalment of the Total War series, I assure you this review is completely unbiased. Well, maybe there’s some slight bias, but ultimately a great game is a great game, no matter who plays it, or what their favoured genre of video game is. And Total War: Shogun 2 is a brilliant game. With fully 3D battles on land and by sea, you can wage your war wherever and whenever you wish. If you’ve played a game from

You can train Ninja Assassins, Geisha, Monks and Setsuke (Police) to help in governing and maintaining stability in your provinces and happily, the Ninja cut scenes are back. Now when you select an assassination target or sabotage target, you can see exactly how your agent’s attempt pans out in an often humourous cinematic. Battles with ancient samurai warriors using bows, spears, swords, cavalry, rifles and even the new hero units are spectacular, especially with the much more advanced AI than in previous games. And if that wasn’t enough, Shogun 2 now has an online multiplayer mode in which you can customise your own general's avatar for battle and take part in some brilliantly fun online battles with and against friends, and even play an online multiplayer campaign. Book Review Half Broken Things Review by Sonia Kilvington

There are some books you forget the minute you have put them down and there are others which continue to haunt you long after you have finished reading; the exceptional novels contain characters who can stay with you for the rest of your life. Half Broken Things is one of those memorable books, with characters you will always remember and a plot you can never forget. Jean has led a very sheltered and ordinary life, spending the best years of her adulthood caring for a sick mother who never loved her. When her mother dies, Jean finds herself at a crossroads. With no money or career, she has reached a point which many of us can identify with. The acknowledgment 56 LN April 2011

that she has not fulfilled any of her promise and has been denied the life she craved, due to commitments which have in effect, stolen her life away. Always a survivor, Jean moves on and for many years she lives very quietly, taking care of other people’s property while they are away. She becomes a respectable house sister. She sticks to the rules and lives a ghost like existence, while caretaking other people’s lives. After years of immaculate behavior, Jean accidently breaks an ornament at Walden Manor where she is the resident property sitter. Being an honest and conscientious employee, she informs the agency, confident that her years of loyal service will be enough to cover her position. Just as her loyal service to her mother was never acknowledged, the company then decides to get rid of her. Stung by rejection, something snaps inside of Jean and for once she thinks; I will do what I want! It all begins innocently enough with just one good bottle of red wine from the cellar; sipped in front of the fire in a room she is not allowed to visit. As with all transgressions, one thing leads to another and after a short while Jean begins to feel that she is owed a great deal more than she has been offered in her life. Slowly she undergoes a metamorphosis, assuming the lady of the manor's wardrobe and habits; until she feels that she has become the rightful owner of Walden Manor. With a new lease of life, Jean searches for the one thing she has always desperately wanted – a family of her own. Advertising in a local newspaper for her long lost son, she comes into contact with Michael, a failed antiques dealer on the run from the police. Michael is as desperate for sanctuary as Jean is for a family and when he brings home Steph, a woman who has been abandoned while pregnant, Jean is utterly grateful for her new family who need her and look to her for guidance and direction. As always, the problem with living a lie, is the high price that must be paid for it. The new family must hide from all interference and shun any unwanted visitors who may discover their deception...When a local from the village suspects there is something

Question: I can bring back the dead. I can make you laugh, make you cry and make you young. I am born in an instant, yet I last a lifetime. What am I?

Answer: A Memory

FASCINATING FACTS ► Bulls are colour-blind and in fact cannot see red, therefore they would charge at any cape no matter what color. ► On 15 April 1912 the SS Titanic sunk on her maiden voyage and over 1,500 people died. Fourteen years earlier, a novel was published by Morgan Robertson which seemed to foretell the disaster. The book described a ship the same size as the Titanic which crashes into an iceberg on its maiden voyage on a misty April night. The name of Robertson's fictional ship was the Titan. ► Crushed up cockroaches help as a pain reliever when rubbed on minor scrapes and burns.

JOKES ► A man and his wife are driving down the road when a cop pulls them over. The cop says to the man, "Do you know that you were speeding?" The man replies, "No sir, I didn't know I was speeding." The man's wife then yells, "Yes you did, you knew you were speeding I've been telling you to slow down for miles." "Be quiet!" the man says to his wife, "Just sit back and be quiet." Then the cop says, "well, since I've got you pulled over did you know that the tag on your license plate is expired?". "No Sir" the man replies, "I did not know that." "Whatever!" his wife yells. "I've been telling you to go get it up to date for 2 whole months now!" "Be quiet!" the man yells to his wife again. "Sit back, be quiet and mind your own business!" Curious, the cop walks over to the woman's side of the car and asks her, "Does he always talk to you this way?" "No" she replies, "Only when he's been drinking...” ► Reasons why Women find it hard to find the Man of their Dreams: 1. The nice men are ugly. 2. The handsome men are not nice. 3. The handsome and nice men are gay. 4. The handsome, nice and heterosexual men are married. 5. The men who are not so handsome, but are nice men, have no money. 6. The men who are not so handsome, but are nice men with money think we are only after their money. 7. The handsome men without money are after our money. 8. The handsome men, who are not so nice and somewhat heterosexual, don't think we are beautiful enough. 9. The men who think we are beautiful, that are heterosexual, somewhat nice and have money, are cowards. 10. The men who are somewhat handsome, somewhat nice and have some money and thank God are heterosexual, are shy and never make the first move!!! 11. And the men who never make the first move, automatically lose interest in us when we take the initiative!

FUNNY QUOTES ► "These people haven't seen the last of my face. If I go down, I'm going down standing up." - Chuck Person, NBA Basketball player ► "That lowdown scoundrel deserves to be kicked to death by a jackass, and I'm just the one to do it". - Congressional candidate in Texas ► "Strangely, in slow motion replay, the ball seemed to hang in the air for even longer." - David Acfield www.larnacanews.com

Unlike other things that you may own, you can never take selling your home lightly. A house is a big commodity, one that is worth a lot of money. Before you even think about selling your home, you should put a lot of thought and consideration into it. Although you may want to sell your home - you should make sure that you do it the right way. The first thing you should do when you are thinking of selling your home is to hire yourself a qualified real estate agent who knows the area. An agent who knows your area will know the ideal price for your home, and help you sell it at the ideal price. If your home is priced right for the area, chances are it will sell. If it is priced too high, you might not get any offers or anyone interested in buying the home. Once you have a real estate agent, you and your agent will need to develop a strategy. You’ll need to decide on the price and how long you will leave it on the market before you think about a reduction. You’ll also need to discuss their commission as well, which will help to avoid any misunderstandings in the future. If you talk about these types of things when you first start out selling your home, you’ll find the entire process will go much smoother.

PROPERTY

Property Selling Your Home

you are able to sell your home. In this situation, you may want to rent out your home. When you rent out your home, you may also be able to strike a deal with renters that your home is available for showing. To make the house accessible to potential buyers, you may want to offer your renters a lower price. This way, they will be more inclined to make the house available for potential buyers. Keep in mind that selling your home will take you some time. You can also sell it yourself if you prefer, without a real estate agent. This can save you quite a bit of money as well, as you won’t have to pay a real estate agent. If you are planning to go this route, you should make sure that you know the value of your home and you know the area. You can put a “for sale by owner” sign in the yard, and list your home in local magazines or newspapers, and on the Internet as well. This way, you’ll get your home out to the market of potential buyers. Homes that are for sale by the owner are always great for buyers as they can deal with the owner directly. LN
