Larnaca's Landmarks Athena by Sonia Kilvigton, Larnaca Writer's Group On the roundabout, before the airport road in Larnaca, there is a beautiful statue surrounded by fountains. She is Athena, goddess of wisdom. Athens in Greece was named in her honor after her gift to the city of the olive tree. She is known as the protector of cities. Athena had many titles, attributed to her during the time of the Greek myths, including “The Goddess of War.” She was a brilliant, but fair strategist and famously tried to prevent the Trojan War. Such was her power, that she descended from Olympus and walked between the two warring factions and made then swear oaths to keep the peace. Unfortunately a soldier named Pandoras disobeyed her and shot an arrow which started the war. You may remember the story of the Trojan Horse, which was one of her ideas. The stunning goddess was the

daughter of the god Zeus. Fearing his wife was about to give birth to a son who would supplant him, Zeus swallowed his pregnant wife Metis. This unnecessary act was to become a source of great pain to Zeus, who became incapacitated with violent headaches. He asked the other gods for help, and they released him from the pain by splitting his skull open. Out came the fully formed goddess Athena, in full battle dress! Zeus was delighted, but regretted his behaviour towards his late wife. Athena’s reputation grew throughout Greece and she remains a symbol of civilisation, knowledge and wisdom to this day. As we pass her statue, let’s

remember her intellect and creativity, and allow her to inspire us as she protects our town.

The Ministry of Communications and Works, Department of Antiquities, announces that the New York University Geronisos Island Excavations, under the direction of Professor Joan Breton Connelly, has completed five weeks of work on Geronisos island, just off the coast of Agios Georgios tis Pegeias, Paphos District. The team of 19 excavators began work on the 16th of May, opening trenches in three distinct areas: the Hellenistic food preparation/ dining complex at the central south of the island, the circular structure at the north, provisionally identified as a Hellenistic dance floor and three Early Byzantine square houses at the very centre of Geronisos. Material recovered from these trenches contributes greatly to our understanding of the three most robust phases of activity on the island: the Early Chalcolithic (3800 B.C.), the Hellenistic (1st century B.C.) and the Byzantine (6th century and 13th centuries A.D.) A well-preserved Chalcolithic ground stone chisel contributes to an already impressive corpus of stone tools recovered from the island. This material, together with previously excavated pottery, a figurine and pendants, suggests that the Chalcolithic settlement on Geronisos was a significant one. For the Hellenistic period, great progress was made toward the understanding of architectural structures that once stood on Geronisos. A large cornice block with dentilled moulding was unearthed. It attests to the great size and grandeur of the buildings of the first century B.C. The proximity of this block to a fragment of a lion’s head waterspout found last season gives some idea of the scope and decoration of an impressive building that probably fell during the earthquake of 15 B.C. Sizable robbing trenches were uncovered along the southern edge of the island, attesting to the removal of large ashlar blocks from gypsum setting beds. This points to the extensive robbing of Geronisos for blocks of stone, probably during the Early Byzantine period. Most likely, widespread stealing of ashlar blocks www.larnacanews.com

SET MEAL Home-Made Soup Of The Day Cod with Fries & Salad

The Sweet Taste of Cyprus by Chrissie Flint There will be many suitcases on flights home from Larnaca containing boxes of Loukoumia (Cyprus Delights). They are delicious sweets, dusted with icing sugar and traditionally flavoured with rosewater or bergamot although today there is a dazzling selection of 20 or more including ones containing almonds and walnuts. The good news is that all are very reasonably priced. Loukoumia has been made in several Cypriot villages for many years and the first workshop opened in Yeroskipou in the Paphos District in 1895. Since then, a number of little workshops have opened in different areas, each making Loukoumia in the same traditional way using sugar, water and starch as the basic ingredients. However of course, the different manufacturers each claim that they use ‘secret’ recipes handed down from their grandparents! To make Loukoumia is timeconsuming and begins with filling a large copper hartchi {cauldron} with water, and this is then placed over a gas burner - although traditionally it was the open fire. Once the water boils the sugar is added and the solution is boiled for an hour and is continuously stirred by an electric paddle

(again in days gone by each family member took their turn on ‘paddle duty’). Starch is added and the mixture brought back to the boil and then simmered for another five hours until it is perfectly smooth and shiny (although it has been said that some producers have been known to sneakily speed up the process by using gelatine which alters the flavour). The mixture is cooled slightly before one of the many different flavours is added. The traditional rose flavour made using local rosewater made in the mountain village of Agros is still the most popular flavour. After the flavouring has been added, the mixture is stirred before it is poured into large wooden trays to set. After about six hours, the mixture is ready for cutting with a large knife. The squares are then given a liberal dusting of icing sugar before being packed into small gift boxes lined with greaseproof paper. If you do visit one of the producers, there is the chance to try the different varieties (pace yourself, there are many), but if you cannot decide which to buy there are now boxes of assorted flavours available

and certainly it is a great idea to pop a few boxes in your suitcase to treat family and friends to a real taste of Cyprus when you get home.

LARNACANEWSWELLBEING

Pregnancy And Osteopathy by Vicky Woollett

Sunny Side Of Vitamin D

During pregnancy, enormous physical, chemical and emotional changes take place over a relatively short period of time. As your baby develops, there will be an increase in volume and weight held in front, making a number of distinct changes in the postural carriage of the body. The centre of gravity moves forward. To counteract this, the long Erector spinae muscles (back muscles) begin working harder to hold the shoulders back and lift the tummy. As a result, a dull backache may be felt from ischaemic muscles (lack of blood in the muscles). The shape of the spine will also change with a deeper curve in the lower back (called lordosis) and the upper back can also curve backwards (called kyphosis). This in turn can cause discomfort in the neck. Along with postural changes and a distinctive waddle, after giving birth the abdomen disappears over night and the breasts may double in size and treble in weight. The upper body is thrown forward and the resistance now in the back muscles is even greater. Of course, as a mother, you will not be concerned with personal problems as your whole life centres on fulfilling the 24 hour demands of the new addition to the family. The next few weeks are spent cradling your baby in the crook of your arm whilst nursing and feeding. This brings unused muscles into play. Small muscles (that hold the arm in a bent position to keep the baby secure) internally rotated will protract (bring forward the shoulders) placing them at an awkward angle. In addition to causing upper back pain, pain in the front of the shoulder, arm and elbow, the shoulder position is now restricted from a full range of motion. The causes of back pain include:►The release of a hormone called relaxin, which causes an increase in the mobility of joints. This hormone assists during delivery to relax the joints to assist in the birth, but has an effect from conception. ►The weight gain during pregnancy has an effect on the

It may be hard to believe, but there is a widespread vitamin D deficiency in our modern world. According to emerging research, vitamin D deficiency is also a root cause of many serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes, autoimmune disorders, depression, impaired cognitive function, heart diseases and others. A new study published in the March 2010 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, found that 59% of the population in America is vitamin D deficient. Lead author of the study, Dr. Richard Kremer at the Mc Gill University Health Centre, documents a clear link between Vitamin D and a whole spectrum of diseases and even stored body fat. Sunlight, the largest natural source of vitamin D, actually promotes body fat loss. More recent research from the University of Copenhagen reveals that vitamin D also activates the immune system to fight off infections. So, for flu or a common cold during winter months, there is a much better way of prevention than vaccine and drugs (which often have undesirable sideeffects), and that is taking vitamin D supplements. Another benefit of vitamin D is improving insulin sensitivity, helping in the prevention of Diabetes, researchers from Massey University have found. In their trial of six months, all participants suffered from insulin (blood sugar regulating hormone) resistance. They also had a low blood level of vitamin D (50 nanomoles per litre). At the end of the six months trial, taking 4000 IU of vitamin D once a day, women in the vitamin group exhibited significantly more insulin sensitivity, than women who had received a placebo. The largest effect was seen in women whose vitamin D levels had reached 80119 nmol/L. According to the vitamin D Council, blood levels should be at least 125 nmol/L for optimal health. spine. Due to the centre of gravity moving forwards as the abdomen enlarges, there is a tendency to increase the lumbar spine curve, an adaptation made to accommodate this change. This in turn puts additional stress on the back muscles and ligaments. ►Fatigue during pregnancy can often lead to poor posture which can also increase lower back pain. So how can Osteopathy help? The safety of mother and baby is the osteopath’s first concern. After a thorough assessment, osteopathic treatment may help to relieve the aches and pains caused by growth in size of the baby and the accommodation of the mother to this. Osteopathic treatment can ease some of the symptoms associated with pregnancy including:►Aches and pains (back pain, neck and shoulder pain, muscular tension) ►Groin, lower abdominal pain or pubic symphysis pain ►Nausea and vomiting ►Heartburn ►Sciatica ►Wrist pain ►Help to prepare the body for the changes during and after delivery After birth it is advised that both mother and child return to see an osteopath for a check up and, if necessary, treatment. Osteopathy after a pregnancy can:►Ensure your body returns back to shape quickly ►Help you regain your strength and flexibility ►Check and correct any remaining strains in the back and pelvis Treatment may be supplemented by exercises and other forms of self help which the osteopath may prescribe. Useful tips:►Standing – Good posture can reduce back pain. Standing up straight and feeling that the baby is tucked into the pelvis decreases the strain on the lower back and improves the spinal posture. You should also avoid transferring weight onto one leg for long periods of time. ►Sitting – Make sure that your back is well supported, a small cushion or rolled up towel in

the lower back may assist in maintaining the lumbar curve and avoid putting stress on the back muscles and ligaments. ►Sleeping – Sleeping positions change during pregnancy due to the change in body shape. Some women find it comfortable to lie on their side with a pillow under the bump and a second under the top knee. Lying flat on the back should be avoided. ►Getting out of bed should be done by rolling onto one side, then pushing up through the arms into a sitting position. The reverse to this when lying down, avoids abdominal strain. ►Look after your back during pregnancy. Take particular care when lifting and carrying – especially lifting or carrying other children. Do not carry a small child on one hip for any length of time. ►Buy a pram with handles at a comfortable height for you. A picture showing the changes in the spine during pregnancy.

to play an important role in bone and teeth health, and now more and more research shows it to play a vital role against cancer, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. Central obesity (belly-fat) along with high blood pressure and high levels of fasting blood glucose, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol is a condition known as Metabolic Syndrome, which is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease and diabetes that may be linked to vitamin D deficiency as well (according to 2009 meta-analysis, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism). All this information should not be a cause for alarm, but a starting point in changing your lifestyle and nutrition. The remedy for this problem is in front of you. You can get it for free. No prescription, no visit to a doctor is required. Get out under the sun during the correct hours and initiate your own healing. Exposure to sunlight (despite many health practitioners and sunscreen manufacturer’s warnings) is still considered the healthiest way to get vitamin D, as the body can synthesise all it needs in only 1-2 hours of basking in the sun. People with dark skin need more daily exposure to obtain sufficient vitamin D. However be sensible; exposure to the sun should be in the early hours of the morning and later hours in the afternoon. Do not use sunscreen products because they block the production of vitamin D in the skin, causing further vitamin D deficiencies across the

population of consumers who use such products. To avoid burning, use organic cocoa butter, vitamin B complex and drink plenty of water. Take care of your own health and be happy! Blast From the Past Martini....Shaken...Not Stirred.. by Sean Dunne This month on ‘Blast from the Past’ we have a look at a truly special car that was the automobile of choice for the coolest spy in the world…. Bond, James Bond. The car in question is the 1964 Aston Martin DB5. Featured primarily in Goldfinger, it is regarded as the most famous Bond car of all time. It came with all the usual Q refinements that have been copied from film to film including bulletproof panels, oil slick, smoke screen, machine guns, rotating licence plates (valid in all countries), telescoping tire slashers, radar receiver in rear view mirror, bumper basher, and most famously, the passenger ejector seat. While being the most recognised Bond car, it's actually been featured in only five films; Goldfinger, Thunderball and Golden Eye, with small appearances in Tomorrow Never Dies and Casino Royale. It was meant to be in The World Is Not Enough, but shots of the DB5 were edited out. It's been said that the Aston Martin DB5 will appear in the 2011 film Bond 23. The DB5 featured a 282-hp, 4.0-litre six-cylinder engine with a four-speed manual transmission. It had an aluminium chassis and was rear-wheel

drive. It has a top speed of 135 mph and can do 0-60 mph in 8.6 seconds and a ¼ mile in 16.2 seconds. The only known remaining DB5 of the two driven by Sean Connery that appeared in Goldfinger and Thunderball will be auctioned off by RM Auctions in London on October 27th, 2010. The ejector seat has been replaced with a regular TURN TO PAGE 27

road rage! This particular car is being sold by U.S. broadcaster Jerry Lee for a crime prevention charity. He bought it for $12,000 in 1969 and it has been in his house since then and rarely seen the outside world. The car is expected to fetch $5,000,000. According to the Bond Museum and Motor News Florida, the other car (the one actually in Goldfinger) was stolen from an aircraft hangar in Boca Raton, Florida in 1997 and never recovered. The mystery surrounding the theft of the vehicle and the fact that the alarm in the hangar was not tripped has led to speculation that the motive behind the theft was insurance fraud since the market value at that time was estimated to be upwards of four million dollars. Aston Martin also made two other tricked out DB5s for a promotional tour since the popularity of the vehicle shot up after the movie. One resides at the Smoky Mountain Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The other is privately owned. Due to the strong relationship between James Bond and his love of Aston Martins there will be many more modern models in future Bond movies but none will have the aura and be as synonymous with James Bond as the Aston Martin DB5.

across the Northern sky. The best way to observe the Perseid Meteor Shower is away from any light pollution and having the moon out of the vision field. Although the Perseid meteor shower is mostly visible to the naked eye, in the case of inconvenient weather conditions such as mist or clouds some amateur (backyard) astronomers may prefer to use binoculars or a camera with a telescopic lens. However, the experts’ advice is to forget the telescope and simply admire the marvelous night sky. A digital camera on infinity focus mode is enough to capture the remarkable event. This year, the Perseid Meteor Shower peak will initiate at approximately 21:30 on the 12th of August and continue until the morning of the 13th of August. East Cyprus Walking Group Troodos Trip by Bob Jenkins, Larnaca Writer's Group This group was formed earlier in the year by members of the Cyprus Eastern Owners and Buyers Forum, for the purpose of organised walks. Anyone is welcome to come along, members and friends, holiday makers, tourists etc. There is no charge or membership fee. For more details, contact den13512@aol.com or try the new web site at www. ecwalking.com/news.htm On Sunday 26th June, we had our most ambitious walk so far. Up until this date our walks have been coastal, or inland around Protaras, Cape Greko, Ayia Napa, Avgorou and even along the coast at Xylophagou. On the Sunday we had a group of roughly forty people going and travelled way up into the Troodos Mountains by coach. We were dropped off at the head of the trail, not far from the Square, near the top of Mt. Olympus. On this trail we were supposed to spend three hours, but became nearer four as we struggled with the terrain, particularly following a stream, which we crossed seven times. We were in the Kannoures district and the streams we crossed eventually ran into the Karyotis River flowing northwards to Morphou Bay. We had two very good lady guides on our journey up the mountain. They, of course, knew the area and told us that there was no other access to the area we were going through. As there was no road access, once we were on our way, there was no turning back. The group was well mixed, men and women of various ages, all chattering away happily as we travelled down the mountainside. Some people, unfortunately, were wearing the wrong footwear, but nevertheless we all enjoyed the adventure. As we walked along the trail, getting lower and lower, the mountainside rose above us. We advanced precariously on rocks and stones with helping hands getting us over the tumbling rock filled stream. At one point, white spots on the rock strewn hillside were pointed out by the guide, who told us that they were Asbestos forming naturally on the rocks. The path crossed sloping hillsides, with many small stones and grit. There were a few slips and falls, all minor, with no one hurting themselves seriously. The route trailed the twists and turns of the valley and we eventually stopped for a break; a rest for the weary. Photos were taken and water was consumed. Starting off again, most people were beginning to feel the strain in their leg muscles as we descended even further, crossing the stream once again. I think there might have been one or two who got their feet wet, but no complaints, as we were all enjoying the wonderful scenery. At the lowest point, we came across some daring climbers with ropes, climbing up the sheer rock face. Leaving them behind we started to climb up to a point where an old mine, long abandoned, stood. Here we came upon an old, worn road that was easier to walk on than the www.larnacanews.com

rough trail we had been on. I was worn out, as were a few others. I felt I could not walk another step, but I was on auto pilot by now. Someone said the end was just around the next bend, but unfortunately there were several more bends, all overlooking a huge drop to the river on our right. Eventually we managed to descend to road level at Kakopetria where our coach waited. Eventually everybody climbed jadedly into the coach and we were whisked us off to an open picnic area where we all took out our cool boxes and hungrily enjoyed our food. The loos unfortunately were quite a way away and tired walkers could be seen staggering up the path, some faces grimacing with pain. The day was enjoyed by all, and even those with aching legs agreed that they had a great day. It was the end of our group walking until September, and I expect we will be back again somewhere in Troodos next year, where we will hopefully see some more new faces.

Ancient Circles by Chrissie Flint

High on a hillside overlooking the highway, halfway between Larnaca and Limassol, stands the ancient village of Chirokitia (also spelt Khirokitia and Choirokoitia) - one of the most important sites in Cyprus. The site was first excavated in 1936 by the Department of Antiquities after its then director Porphyrios Dikaios noticed some stone foundations on the hillside whilst he was travelling along the road. The work that followed was the first major excavation by the team and to everyone’s delight revealed an ancient community and gave an insight into how they lived. Excavations have continued and today the site is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The location for the village was carefully chosen on a hillside between two peaks for defensive reasons and it is close to the Maroni river for water supplies. Today the site offers visitors a panoramic view of the locality. There is a strong stone defensive wall and circular houses made from stone and mud. Some were quite spacious, measuring up to six metres. Called tholoi, these 60 or more houses were first built between 7000-6000 BC close together huddled on the hillside, with stone stairs and paths and large central courtyards.

Archaeologists believe that each house was in fact used like a large room for a particular purpose. Several of the roundhouses have

been reconstructed to give visitors an idea of what they were like. The excavations have revealed that the inhabitants cultivated wheat and barley and that they milled these grains. They also picked olives, figs and pistachios

that grew locally. They reared animals and made tools and bowls from bones and stone and traded with neighbouring countries. A curious discovery by archaeologists is that these ancient people buried their dead underneath their homes, carefully placing them in the fetal position and surrounded by their possessions. Likewise, if one of the houses crumbled and deteriorated it was simply flattened and another built on top of the rubble. Interestingly, a total of 26 graves on eight superimposed sites have been found and archaeologists believe that as many as 2,000 people could have lived in the village, which is huge by ancient standards. Throughout the site there are information boards with text in Greek, English and French and it is lovely to take a wander and try and imagine life in ancient times‌ ►The site is open daily 09.00-5.00 p.m. For your comfort, wear comfortable clothes and footwear when visiting Chirokitia.

Whether you want to sell or let, buy or rent, reluctant as you may be it is probably worthwhile seeking advice from a property consultant. Larnaca is chock-a-block with estate agents and property consultants and it’s difficult to know where to start with so many options available. Ultimately you need to find a company offering detailed local market knowledge, understanding of Cypriot Law, a user friendly website and a strong local reputation. We at Cyprus Life offer all this and more. In 2007 our small, independent agency was established in Oroklini Village by three partners with varied and solid experience in property sales, relocation, and management services both in the UK and in Cyprus. “The key to steady growth and success is an individual approach to landlords, tenants, buyers and sellers. It is essential to offer an organised, professional approach when dealing with one of the most stressful and emotional products: property,” said Rachel Clayton, Relocation Director. “Everyone has different views, priorities and opinions when it comes to homes and money, and it’s down to us to try and hold the balance”. “Air-conditioning units and water pumps don’t just break down on a 9 to 5 basis; they wait until the middle of the hottest night of the year. Therefore Cyprus Life’s lettings and property management team doesn’t just work nine to five either,” said Director George Georgiou. “Running a professional property management business for professional landlords and professional tenants is a 24-hour a day responsibility, 365 days a year. Once a property is let, it’s only the beginning of the story and the landlord’s obligations must be executed in the most efficient way possible. Cyprus Life are very keen to take on new instructions. Constanta believes there are many excellent opportunities available for landlords considering investing in Larnaca, he stresses how important it is for landlords to seek expert advice from an independent specialist in order to make the most from their investment. "An experienced letting agent such as ourselves, who know the local market inside and out, can help landlords make the best decision when choosing a property to let," he said. “Now is the best time to purchase buy to let properties.” "We are experiencing a surge in corporate enquiries for exclusive houses and apartments this year, as young Europeans and

Americans continue to move into the area,” says Rachel. Larnaca is a huge pull for these overseas professionals. It’s unique in providing access to the sea, the highway networks and of course the new International Airport. FASCINATING FACTS Did you know that the food colourants cochineal and carmine, found in many foodstuffs, beverages and cosmetics, actually come from ground beetles? That’s right. Ewwww! Due to the fact that synthetic dyes are often dangerous to humans if taken internally or absorbed through the skin, the colourant from crushing the carcasses of a Central and South American insect has been used for centuries, dating at least all the way back to the Aztecs. Although ingesting this bug is perfectly safe, it is the thought of eating a bug that will get to most people. Have a look at the ingredients of your red coloured food products next time you’re shopping and see for yourself.
