FROM PAGE 5 Larnaca Golf Resort will be incorporated into their list of European destinations, placing Cyprus on the world golfing map. The picturesque resort also has a unique landscaping project under way, with plans for over 400,000 plants and trees, transforming the area into a lively, new landscape with an abundance of foliage that will enhance the natural setting of the area. This project will involve extensive infrastructure works, the upgrade of road networks and will include green areas, footpaths and widespread cycling tracks, together with substantial public parking. A desalination project is scheduled for development for irrigation purposes as well as serving the community. Featuring a wealth of recreational offerings the resort will also include a Clubhouse and Country Club, with the Clubhouse seated on a natural outcrop with fine views of the course, open to cooling sea breezes and secluded by surrounding hills. The resort’s centre will take the form of a traditional Mediterranean Village containing a lively mix of retail and leisure facilities to create a vibrant hub providing world class amenities for visitors and members alike.

Cyprus News Local ►The European Commission is urging Cyprus, Italy, Portugal and Spain to comply with EU air quality limit values for airborne particles known as PM10. So far they have failed to effectively tackle excess emissions of PM10. On the recommendation of Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik, the Commission has therefore decided to take Cyprus, Italy, Portugal and Spain to Court. Legislation sets limit values for exposure which were to be met by 2005, covering both an annual concentration value (40 μg/m3), and a daily concentration value (50 μg/m3) that must not be exceeded more than 35 times in any calendar year. Member States may apply for exemptions from the PM10 limit values until June 2011, but these exemptions are subject to a number of conditions. The information available to the Commission shows that the limit values for PM10 have not been respected in several zones in Cyprus, Italy, Portugal and Spain, and while they have applied for time extensions, the Commission considers that the conditions for granting them have not been met. Airborne particles (PM10) are mainly present in pollutant emissions from industry, traffic

and domestic heating. They can cause asthma, cardiovascular problems, lung cancer and premature death.

Larnaca Home Bargains Clearance Centre Bringing The Prices Down AJS Homebargains is a growing company based in Larnaca. We moved to the island approximately 4 years ago and were amazed how expensive some of the products on the island were. We therefore decided to import all kinds of bathroom and electrical goods from the UK to bring prices in Cyprus back down to earth. As you are probably aware, major companies in the UK cannot sell products on their premises if the boxes or packaging have been slightly damaged or have had very minor scratches/dents on the product, which are normally caused by shipping companies. We decided to start there and bring these products to Cyprus and save the public huge amounts of money, in most cases up to 50%. Due to customer feedback and orders, we diversified slightly and extended our range to include household and garden items too. Our luxurious, extensive range of orthopedic memory foam mattresses has been a huge success along with the beds; keeping the shelves replenished has certainly kept us on our toes. We also stock new branded products at very competitive prices. Our stock is replenished frequently so regular visits to the warehouse and website are advised to make sure you don’t miss out on a bargain. We knew that at the rate we were growing the next step would have to be retail outlets, but the overheads were something that concerned us as it would reflect in the items price. “Top Brands – Bottom Prices”, is what we stand for so we needed to give this a lot of thought. After a lot of consideration we came up with the idea of an online shop, enabling us to offer our customers the low prices we are renowned for, a bigger choice and the chance to shop with us 24hrs a day 7 days a week, at their convenience in the comfort of their own home. Our website www.homebargains.com.cy is at present under construction but will be open to its first customers very soon. Look out for future adverts in the Larnaca News, Angloinfo, Eastern Cyprus Forum, Cyprus like this and many more. From all of us at Homebargains, we would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our customers, old and new, a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year! LARNACANEWSWELLBEING

The Battle Against Brain Decay By Dr. Mirjana Duvnjak, MD, MT, FDN&M Practitioner Today experts are concerned by the sharp rise in the rates of deterioration in brain function in the majority of Western countries. For example, in America alone, Alzheimer`s deaths have increased 46% in recent years, and new statistics show that someone develops Alzheimer`s every 72 seconds. As most people live in their 80s and beyond, chances of suffering from significant cognitive decline are as high as 50%. Despite huge advances in modern medical sciences why are we losing the battle against brain decay? Our health care system is focused on treatment for most diseases, rather than prevention. Especially with the concepts of main-stream medicine, chronic diseases can't be treated successfully. Prevention is better than a cure - This old adage is so very true, especially when it comes to brain decay. By the time it has been diagnosed, it is often too late. Researches in NIH's National Institute of Aging found that current drugs can only treat symptoms of Alzheimer's, not cure it. So, why are still focusing on pharmaceutical drugs when alternative options have been clinically proven to be much more effective? According to the University of Virginia, Brain decay can be scientifically detected as early as age 37 - much earlier than the majority of us think. Early Warning Signs Some people think that being “forgetful” is just part of getting older. But it might be an early warning sign of cognitive decline. Do not leave these signs too long before addressing them. Some symptoms of probable early cognitive decline are: ►Slow recall ►Withdrawal from activities ►Fuzzy memory ►Difficulty completing tasks ►Losing things ►Problem recalling words www.larnacanews.com

►Poor judgment ►Confusion with time or place ►Low mental energy ►Changes in mood and personality. Once you have started to experience any of these symptoms, the time to take action is critical if you want to keep your mind sharp and your memories intact as you age. Some Measures to Keep your Brain Healthy for Longer Eating according to your specific Metabolic Type is necessary to optimise your energy production and balancing functions of your body, brain and mind. Sugar, processed, junk, and food from tins and boxes should be exchanged for fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes, fish and small amounts of meat from organically fed animals. Eating processed, 'dead' food can't give us live energy, necessary for optimal functioning of trillions of our body cells and their coherent communications with each other, which is key for good health. Also, specific nutrients (according to your metabolic needs) play a key role in prevention of brain

decay. ►1. CoQ10 is the Brains Fountain of Youth. According to a University of California San Diego study, adequate levels of CoQ10 can slow brain deterioration by 44%. ►2. The Omega-3 your brain needs most. One particular omega-3 called DHA (docosahexaeonic acid) is critical for brain functioning. The best product of omega-3 essential fatty acids is a product called MOXXOR. It contains the highest amount of pure DHA and DPHA (another omega-3 vital for brain function). ►3. Ingredients such as cur cumin, Alpha lipoic Acid, Acai Berries, MSM and others can help you to stay mentally sharp. Moderate exercise, socialising and mental games, dancing and laughter will add spice to your life. DITCH THE DISH Watch UK TV via internet

With a Channel Green TV set top box you can now receive over 65 channels, including all of your favourite UK shows. Simply register for your monthly service charge, plug the set top box into your broadband router, connect it up to your television and you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy all your favourite soaps and dramas and even catch up with events back home in Blighty. How do we do this? With IPTV, that’s Internet Protocol Television, or put more simply, telly through the net. Our specially designed, unique set top box requires nothing more than a consistent 2Mb download speed and an Ethernet cable to de

liver those programmes to you, wherever you are, whenever you want. Crucially this means there is no longer any need for a lengthy and disruptive installation process, and the „man with a van“, no need for miles of cables and no need for that huge, ugly satellite dish.

Included with the set top box is a remote control with which you can navigate through the EPG, Electronic Programme Guide or menu. You can choose from live (live streaming of British programmes), My PVR (My Personal Video Recorder - your recorded favourites), settings (where you can set Parental Controls or check up on your systems details) and, last but not least, on demand (e.g movie channels also at any given time you can access the last fourteen days of programmes) with all of this you will be hard pushed to ever miss any of your favourite shows again. The set top box itself

is light and portable, in effect meaning that you can use it to watch TV anywhere in your house, provided you can get that internet connection. And, if you can’t, then you have the option to use a set of Homeplugs, which slot into any power points in your home and carry the signal through the ringmain to your chosen screen via the set top box. Sound great? Well here’s your chance to win one. We’re going to be running a fortnightly competition over the next eight weeks where you can win a set top box, culminating in a special Christmas competition. All you have to do is answer a simple question and the prize could be yours! For more information on the system, to buy online or find your nearest agent visit

RECIPE SERVES: 6-8 PREP. TIME: Overnight COOKING TIME: 1 hr INGREDIENTS

3 cups (510g) sultanas. 1 1/2 cups (265g) chopped raisins. 1 cup (155g) currants. 1 cup (150g) chopped dried pitted dates. 1/2 cup (95g) prunes, finely chopped. 100g red glace cherries, finely chopped. 1/2 cup (125g) finely chopped glace figs. 1/4 cup (50g) mixed peel. 3/4 cup (185ml) whiskey. 1 tbs finely grated orange rind. 250g butter, at room temperature . 1 cup (200g) brown sugar 4 eggs . 2 cups (300g) plain flour 2 tsp mixed spice. 2 x 200g pkts prepared almond paste. 1/2 cup (125g) apricot jam 1kg bought colour of your choice fondant icing Ribbon, to decorate. Silver leaf, to decorate.

ROYAL ICING

1 eggwhite 1 1/2 cups (230g) pure icing sugar, plus extra to dust How 1. Combine the sultanas, raisins, currants, dates, prunes, cherries, figs, mixed peel, whiskey and orange rind in a large bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside, stirring occasionally, for 2 days to macerate. 2. Preheat oven to 150째C. Grease and line the base and sides of six (3/4 cup/185ml capacity) metal dariole moulds with baking paper. Use an electric mixer to beat the butter and sugar together until pale and creamy. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well www.larnacanews.com

Christmas Mini Cakes In Eight Easy Steps between each addition, until just combined. Add to the fruit mixture with the flour and mixed spice and use a wooden spoon to stir until well combined. 3. Spoon fruit mixture evenly among the prepared moulds. Tap the bases of the moulds on a bench to settle mixture to the base. Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour or until a skewer inserted in the centres comes out clean. Remove from oven and cover with foil. Turn cake over to sit on foil. Set aside overnight to cool completely. 4. To make the royal icing, combine the eggwhite and icing sugar in a small bowl to form a smooth paste. Cut six 10cm-diameter discs from a silver-covered cardboard cake board. Spread a small dot of icing on each cardboard disc. Top with a small piece of baking paper. Use a small, serrated knife to trim the base of each cake. Place the cake, cutside down, onto each lined board. Fill any holes in cake with pieces of almond paste. 5. Heat the jam in a small saucepan over low heat until jam melts. Strain through a fine sieve. Brush half the warm jam over the top and side of each cake. Roll out almond paste on a work surface dusted with icing sugar. Use a 7cm round pastry cutter to cut six discs and place on the top of each cake. Cut the remaining almond paste into 5cm-wide strips and

place around the side of each cake. Use hands, dusted in icing sugar, to smooth the surface. 6. Knead the fondant icing and divide into six equal portions. Roll an icing portion out to a 3-4mm thick disc. Brush the almond paste with a little of the remaining jam. 7. Drape the fondant over the cake and use hands, dusted in icing sugar, to smooth and shape the fondant around the sides of cake. Use a small, sharp knife to trim the edges. Repeat with remaining jam, fondant and cakes. 8. Decorate with ribbon, royal icing and silver leaf, or any christmas decoration you desire. You can also mix and match the fruits to your preference. Have a scrumptious Christmas Holiday.

“I’m dreaming of a white Christmas”, we all caroled in our squeaky pre-teen voices, standing in serried ranks, smallest in the front, tallest at the back; a microcosm of the United Nations balancing precariously on wobbly benches. Not one of us out of all the pupils at the local primary school, had the faintest notion of what a “white Christmas” looked like, felt like or even was, but we were all being educated in precisely the same fashion as small English children were, in all their primary schools all over Britain. In the airy estate house with its wide, fern-hung verandahs, the tree had been hauled in by the long suffering Bruce, the sugar estate factotum, sweating through his khaki shirt, and giggling as he always did, “But dis is one fine-fine tree, nuh, man! T’ink of what you gwine get, Miss Jilly!” And thinking we were, my brother and I, as we danced in hysterical glee about him. This was no fir tree, no Norwegian spruce, or blue pine; this was two or three branches of the casuarina tree, which had the appearance of fir, and whose tangy scent still imbues all my memories of tropical childhood Christmases. After the branches had been arranged and balanced to her final satisfaction, my mother would then produce (with strict injunctions on her part “not to touch”, and on our part, to frissons of anticipation and delight) the glass baubles which she had carefully stored from the previous year. Crowding together in the kitchen door, the house servants gathered and gaped with joy and wonder akin to ours, as each glistening, shiny bauble was lovingly lifted from its cotton wool cocoon. Later that night, when the adult party was winding to its close, and we two children crouched in the upstairs corridor, our heads poking through the banisters to glimpse the fun, my father,

as was his wont, launched into song. He led the guests in rousing chorus through most of the carols, finishing finally with his favorite, the old spiritual, “Poor ol’ Joe”. As he got to the line “I hear the angel voices calling”, my beloved nurse, swathed in an old garden jacket, her head covered, not as it normally was in gleaming white cap, but in an ancient brown one belonging to the gardener, leaning heavily on the broom, came tottering through the door. “Ise a-coming , Ise a-coming , tho’ mah is bendin’ low”, she sang in a glorious rich contralto, to cheers of delight from the other servants, clustered in the doorway, appreciative acclamation from the guests, and peals of high pitched glee from us, her two charges. I don’t think my love for her that night could have been more intense, as I hugged myself with pleasure and pride. And so that one Christmas ended, not in flurries of snow, or with the crisp crunch of icy footsteps across a frozen landscape, but in the early hours of a humid tropical dawn, with a soft murmur and susurration of tropical insects, and the tang of jasmine and sugar cane wafting faintly through the shutters. Somewhere, in some happy heaven, I imagine that beloved nurse still singing in her lovely voice and its faint whisper still thrills my listening heart. - By Jill Sherwood, Oroklini, Larnaca All entries will be featured on our website www.larnacanews.com

Celebrating 17 Years of Indian Cuisine Happy Birthday Masalas This month Masalas Indian Restaurant celebrates 17 years of business and would like to say a big thank you to all its regular customers and welcome any new customers. The owner Nick from Stratford Upon Avon, Warickshire has brought a wealth of experience to Larnaca and has been responsible for putting Indian Cuisine firmly on the Cyprus map. He trully believes that Masalas is way up there at the top and claims to be the best Indian Restaurant in Cyprus and one of the Finest in Europe. Come and dine at Masalas and tell us if he’s right.

The authenticity of the restaurant is due not only to the scent and flavours of the fine spices, cardoman and cumin, the array of colours and to the gentle ripples of the water fountain but to the tunes of Asia softly playing in the background, all of which add to the ambience of the whole experience. The decor was in keeping with the Indian theme and the clever use of coloured lighting made for a relaxing atmosphere. It is no wonder that even in these times of recession if you’re arriving at the weekend it’s best to book your favourite seat in or out. If you don’t know what to order no matter just leave it to Margaritta and her staff and in true cypriot style they will order a meze of dishes to tickle your pallette. Masalas is now pleased to be able to offer its customers old and new a 20% discount off the menu for December between Monday and Thursday when dining at the restaurant. Everyone at Masalas would like to take this opportunity to wish all its customers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. www.larnacanews.com

ince he opened his restaurant and cookery workshop in Limassol, Roddy Damalis has certainly earned a great reputation for both his tasty food and for making cooking fun! Certainly his workshops are always full, with both men and women of all ages, eager to learn some of the ‘tricks of the trade’ as they cook alongside Roddy before sitting down to share the meal they have cooked with a glass of wine or two – what a winning formula. Roddy has a weekly cookery programme on TV so the natural progression was for him to write a cookery book and Ta Piatakia Mou – My Little Plates has just been published. The ethos behind the cookery book is the preservation of Cyprus cuisine. Roddy loves all the traditional dishes that his grandmother used to make but realises how time consuming they can be, so they are not practical for today’s busy living. Roddy has carefully taken the recipes apart and recreated them. He adapts with modern methods and short cuts and occasionally carefully altering the taste subtley to broaden appeal. He hopes that by encouraging everyone to cook these dishes that the livelihoods of the people who make many of the traditional ingredients will be

LARNACANEWSREVIEWS This beautiful volume has been written by Jane Stylianou who works for the organisation BirdLife Cyprus. She has purposefully made the book easy to follow for all ages and she has packed in plenty of interesting information and attempted to answer many of the frequently asked questions. Birds of Cyprus literally does start at the beginning in its introduction, explaining the evolution of birds and how they fly before describing migration and how there are two groups of migratory birds visiting Cyprus - the passage migrants who pass through Cyprus on their migratory journey and those that will remain in Cyprus to breed.

safeguarded too. The cookery book takes its title from Roddy’s restaurant Ta Piatakia meaning Little Plates and this handsome volume contains 100 favourite recipes from the restaurant. Each recipe has been beautifully illustrated and the recipe has been clearly written with time saving tips and plenty of good advice so that each one is a success. If you are looking for a special Christmas gift, this could be the one or why not book your nearest and dearest on one of the new series of cookery workshops which begin in the New Year? Ta Piatakia Mou- My Little Plates by Roddy Damalis is available in hardback priced €37.50. The book can be bought online and places reserved for the cookery workshops via the website www.tapiatakia.com or by telephone 25582515. The cook book can also be ordered by mail order from Moufflon Books in Nicosia 22-665155 - By Chrissie Flint

The third chapter is an important one as it introduces the two endangered birds of Cyprus the Griffon Vulture and Raven and the subsequent chapters contain information about resident species as well as summer and winter visitors and the endemic species that can be seen. The photographs used for each species are beautiful and certainly help with recognition. Through all the pages there are interesting snippets of information to encourage readers to take an interest in the birds and importantly to recognise the importance of protecting them and the role of Birdlife Cyprus in this - both locally and on an international scale. Birds of Cyprus is a great read, and not just under the Christmas tree. * Birds of Cyprus by Jane Stylianou (BirdLife Cyprus) is published in softback by the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and is priced €20.00. The book is available by mail order from Moufflon Books in Nicosia Tel: 22665155 or e-mail bookshop@ moufflon.com ►There is also a great opportunity this Christmas to get your hands, or eyes in this case, on a piece of work by Larnaca's own up and coming local author, Sonia Kilvington. Her E-book, Main Line Murders, is available at www.ebookmall.com priced $4.99.

A Great Book for Christmas At this time of year, Cyprus is an interesting place to be because there are so many different species of migrating birds to be seen as the island is on one of the main ‘flyways’ between Europe and Africa. With Cape Greco on the doorstep, it is well worth planning a good long stroll to enjoy seeing some of the different species and for help in identifying them what better than a copy of the recently published Birds of Cyprus? www.larnacanews.com

Dear Tess, I have created a mess for myself and I don't know what to do for the best. One night on holiday I got extremely drunk when we were all out at a bar and my friend's husband took me back to the hotel room. We ended up having sex, which i think I instigated. I feel so terribly guilty and ashamed. My friend's husband constantly texts me or phones me begging me not to say anything. Despite what happened I consider myself to be an honest and decent person. The weight of this secret - keeping it from my partner - whom I love - is crushing me. I just don't know what to do. Please help me. -Anon Dear Reader, Whatever you decide to do needs to be weighed between what your conscience says to you, and the consequences of revealing what happened that night. You might feel better 'getting the guilt and shame out of your system' but what of the repurcussions for your partner and your friend? They are innocent in this. What will it do to them? What will the effect be upon your friend's relationship with her husband? Have you considered the impact upon your

relationship with your partner, and your relationship with your friend? Your friend and your partner are likely to be devastated by this. The implications for you all having trusting relationships with eachother for the forseeable future is highly questionable. You are likely to lose the friendship you have with your friend and her husband forever. Your friend's husband also has a say in what happens too - doesn't he? If you decide not to say anything you will have to come to terms with what happened, and at some point forgive yourself. It might help to talk to a counsellor to support you through this. Expert Advice Land Registry Queries I am often asked by clients who are owners of properties in apartment blocks or on complexes, Stelios where do we register our management committee? This question often perplexes me. My answer is invariably, who told you that you have to 'register' the management committee? Before my clients can answer I preempt them as I know what the answer will be and it is usually their developer's advice. And it is wrong. So, let me set the record straight for you. According to our land Law (Tenure, Registration, Valuation) Cap 224 Part II A, which concerns commonly owned properties there is NO obligation or in fact mechanism for registering a 'management committee' at the Land Registry or anywhere else for that matter. This section of the law is badly drafted, has holes in it and is, to say the least, ambiguous, but the legislature was clear when the law was drafted. Go to any land registry in Cyprus and ask to register your management committee, and the Director should point you in the direction of the exit as the Land Registry is not bound to hold any record, list or register of management committees as this is not what the law intended and if it did then this would be a logistical nightmare. Let us take some simple logical examples of why there is no requirement to register a management committee.

A Lawyers Happy Christmas Message by Mark Tilden Another year gone – I cannot believe it. I am sure that the days get faster and faster the older you get. For those of you that have read my articles over the last twelve months, thank you – I am glad that someone reads them! For those of you that have not – where have you been and what have you been doing ?! All I wish to do in the article this month is to stress once again that if you have assets here in Cyprus and you do not have a Cypriot Will to cover those assets then you are potentially leaving open a great deal of stress and worry and perhaps even unforeseen consequences for your next of kin if you do not make one. However, as this is the season of good will, I would like to say to all my readers the following, in the best traditions of lawyer humour :

www.larnacanews.com

Please accept without obligation, express or implied, these best wishes for an environmentally safe, socially responsible, low stress, non addictive, and gender neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday as practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice (but with respect for the religious or secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or for their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all) and further for a personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated onset of the generally accepted calendar year (including, but not limited to, the Christian calendar, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures). The preceding wishes are extended without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical

ability, religious faith or sexual preference. (!) I shall be available over the Xmas period to deal with any questions or queries you may have as regards Wills both under Cypriot and British jurisdictions. The cost of making a valid British or Cypriot Will is €195.00 for a single Will and €325.00 for a mirror (husband and wife type) Will. In both cases Stamp Duty needs to be paid of €17.09 per Will. If you require any further information or you wish me to visit you to discuss then please do not hesitate to call me on Tel: 96549826 or email: mark11cyprus@hotmail.com Finally, I would like to wish all readers a very Happy Christmas and a safe, happy and prosperous New Year. ▄

Motoring Madness Travel to the Future by Sean Dunne Porsche Cayenne scoops awards in Europe and USA. The world's largest international reader jury has awarded the new Porsche Cayenne the “Golden Steering Wheel 2010". Almost 250,000 readers from 23 different countries voted on participating vehicles in SpringerVerlag’s pan-European reader poll, with the Cayenne emerging triumphant in the SUV category. The latest version of the successful sporty off-road vehicle particularly impressed readers with its attractive design and high practicality, alongside maximum efficiency and the typical driving pleasure of a Porsche. For the “Golden Steering Wheel” awards 40 million readers of “AUTO BILD”, “BILD am Sonntag” and 26 other European car magazines were invited to vote for their favourites. Porsche had previously won the coveted award in 2000 with the 911 Turbo, in 2005 with the Carrera GT and in 2009 with the Panamera. This announcement virtually coincided with the coronation of the new Cayenne as “Sport/ Utility of the Year” by the renowned US trade publication “Motor Trend”, in the home country of the SUV. The editorial panel of experts assessed a total of 15 new models in this category according to the six objective criteria: design,

technology, fuel efficiency, safety, value stability and performance. On top of these accolades, the new Cayenne generation is proving a resounding market success worldwide. Particularly in the guise of the Cayenne S Hybrid model, Porsche serves up its most compelling combination of efficiency and performance for customers and trade journalists alike, demonstrating what “Porsche Intelligent Performance” is all about. Cayman R

The new top-of-the-range model for the midengine coupé. The Porsche alphabet reserves the letter R for very special sports cars: R for responsive and refined, but most especially for racy. The new Cayman R combines all these attributes without compromise. 55 kilograms (121 lb) lighter and with ten horsepower more than the Cayman S, the new mid-engine coupé from Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is designed for spectacular road behaviour. With its specially adapted sports chassis, it provides an even more precise driving experience than the Cayman S. The Cayman R made its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show on 17th November. The new mid-engine coupé is powered by a tuned-up 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine developing 330 hp (243 kW). In the standard configuration it transmits its power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox that propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.0 seconds. Or there is the option of the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) that reduces its acceleration time to 4.9 seconds. For even more impressive sprinting performance, the Cayman R can be supplied with one of the optional Sport Chrono packages, taking it to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds. The new mid-engine coupé is capable of a top speed of 282 km/h (175 mph) with manual gearbox, or 280 km/h (174 mph) with PDK. Its NEDC fuel consumption is 9.7 l/100 km (29.12 mpg imp.) with six-speed gearbox and 9.3 l/100 km (30.37 mpg imp.) with PDK. The main aim during the design of the Cayman R was to improve the two-seater even

further in its performance, driving dynamics and agility through consistent weight reduction. With a DIN unladen weight of just 1,295 kilograms (2855 lb) the Porsche engineers were able to reduce the power-to-weight ratio of the coupé www.larnacanews.com

with standard manual gearbox to 3.9 kilograms (8.6 lb) per horsepower, with the PDK version weighing 4.0 kilograms (8.8 lb) per horsepower. The largest savings were achieved through the use of lightweight components and doing without convenience equipment. As with the 911 GT3/GT3 RS and Boxster Spyder, an optional lithium-ion lightweight construction battery is also available. In addition, the top model in the mid-engine coupé is equipped with the lightest 19 inch wheels the entire Porsche range can offer. The complete rim set weighs less than 40 kilograms. The Cayman R's purpose and purist character can be seen at first glance. The extended silhouette of the bodywork, which has been lowered by 20 millimetres (0.79 in) compared to the Cayman S, combined with the distinctive fixed rear spoiler, the high-quality silver-painted wheels and numerous sporting highlights on both the interior and exterior, ensures an individual appearance. The black-framed headlights, black exterior mirrors and the "PORSCHE" lettering on the side, in contrasting black or silver depending on the body colour, take design cues from classic Porsche racing cars. Precisely this lettering was the trademark of the first Porsche with the "R" designation, the 911 R of 1967. It was created for racing sport use in a small series of 19 cars. The "R" was a prototype based on the standard coupé with a 210 horsepower Carrera 6 engine and, thanks to its many plastic components and extremely sparse equipment, weighed only 830 kilograms (1830 lb). The new Porsche Cayman R will go on sale from February 2011. The price in Germany will be €69,830 inclusive of 19 percent VAT and country-specific equipment items. Interestingly and unsurprisingly, prices in Cyprus start from €109,600. For most people this car is merely a dream…but what a dream it is. Larnaca News 35

14 APOP KINYRAS PEYIAS Introduction To Larnaca Football Clubs December League Results by George Kasparis I hope you are all enjoying the great game in Cyprus and another interesting month with only three games to report on. AEK seem to be going from strength to strength collecting maximum points from three games. On the other hand Anorthorsis are going from bad to worse (we hear they have a few problems internally). Ermis have made some ground and have climbed up the table, whilst Alki…well…I don't know what's going on there ; they have sacked their coach, so dare I say the new guy will get better results. The Larnaca News team went to the local derby between AEK and Anorthosis last week; by far the biggest crowd of the season with around 10,000 fans turning up. It was a very vocal and colourful game and there was a terrific atmosphere. Both teams were evenly matched until Anorthosis were reduced to 10 men having their goalkeeper sent off. The rest is history. The Cyprus Cup also kicked off last week with all three divisions taking part. All the Larnaca boys managed to qualify for the next round quite comfortably, apart from AEK who had a nail biter scoring the decisive goal in the last minute of extra time. I quite like the set up as all matches are played on a home and away basis and stretches out the season, making it much more exciting. Something I do have to mention and you have probably noticed, is that we don't have our last Larnaca team, Anorthosis, in our Spotlight section this month. Unfortunately they declined the opportunity to gain a little bit more support for their club. It’s bit of a shame because they are by far the most successful club in Cyprus over the last decade, almost reaching the final 16 in the group stages of the Champions League. Finally I would like to thank you all for taking part in the Spotlight on Larnaca Football. I hope you enjoyed it and are much more informed. As I have now completed our 4 clubs in Larnaca, in the next issue I will be giving you a roundup of the month’s action and of course, the league tables. I wish you all an enjoyable Christmas and happy New Year. Position

Larnaca News Feature Europeana Digital Library

A

nyone in the world can now access over 14 million digitised books, maps, photographs, paintings, film and music clips from cultural institutions across Europe through Europe's digital library Europeana. Launched in 2008 with two million objects, Europeana has already passed the initial target for 2010 of 10 million objects. Europeana is a multimedia library, museum and archive gateway with Web 2.0 features. It offers direct access to digitised books, audio and film material, photos, paintings, maps, manuscripts, newspapers and archival documents that are part of Europe’s cultural heritage. Visitors to www.europeana.eu can search and explore different collections in Europe’s cultural institutions in their own language, without having to visit multiple sites or countries. Europeana was launched by the European Commission and the EU's culture ministers in Brussels on 20 November 2008. Who is Europeana for? Europeana offers anyone interested in literature, history, art or cinema a direct route to access European cultural resources. It offers a simple way to find cultural material from across Europe in digitised format. Europeana is also expected to attract students and researchers with its vast virtual collection of material from all disciplines. That said, it is just as easy for school children to use it, for homework or for fun. How does Europeana work? Europeana is a multimedia internet portal with content from different sources. The digital

objects that users can find on Europeana are not stored on a central computer, but remain with the cultural institution where the objects are in reality, and are hosted on their network. Europeana collects contextual information about the items, including pictures where appropriate. Users can search this contextual information, and a simple click provides them with access to the full content – inviting them to read a book, play a video or listen to an audio recording that is stored on the servers of the respective content contributing institutions. Cultural institutions collaborating with Europeana organise their digitised content so as to make this search possible, while maintaining control over their content. How does a cultural digital object (book, video, etc.) end up in Europeana? First, the cultural object has to be digitised. Digitisation is the transformation into digital format of text and photos from paper, films from reels, music from vinyl or videos from tape, so it can be accessed from a computer. For text and photos this involves scanning. Then the cultural institution that has digitised the object has to make it available for search and retrieval through Europeana. To make it searchable from a single entry point, the institution has to add the right contextual information to the digital object, such as the name

of the author/creator, the place and date of creation, etc. The selection of content to be digitised and brought into Europeana is determined by EU countries and their cultural institutions in line with their cultural and/or information policies. How many digital objects are available through Europeana and where do they come from? Europeana gives direct access to over 14 million digitised items from museums, libraries, audiovisual and other archives across Europe. Over 1,500 cultural organisations from the 27 EU countries have provided material to Europeana. Are 14 million objects enough? 14 million objects is a very respectable number. It shows good progress compared to 2 million items in 2008 and is well above the Commission's initial target of 10 million works for 2010. To attract more users and to ensure that users come back to the site, the amount of objects searchable through Europeana should grow over the coming years. The speed of this growth TURN TO PAGE 42

LARNACANEWSNEWS FROM PAGE 41 depends largely on the pace of digitisation in EU member states. This can happen if more Member States make their digitised heritage available to redress the present imbalance between the contributions, and if content providers increase the diversity of the types of content, especially audio and video content. What kind of interesting cultural objects can I find on Europeana? Here is just a selection: ►Austria: handwritten travel notes by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1769); several back-volumes of 'Dillingers Reise- und FremdenZeitung' from the end of the 19th century; ►Belgium: the images of a series of art nouveau buildings in Brussels (also featuring in Europeana's art nouveau exhibition), the works of the 19th century poet Guido Gezelle; ►Bulgaria: a parchment manuscript dated 1221, among the most important witnesses to the history of Bulgarian language; a series of postcards from before WWI showing the city of Varna; ►Cyprus: 'E Asthenes Lyra' (1882), the first poetry collection of the national poet of Cyprus, Vasiles Michaelides; a large scale panoramic view of Nicosia; ►Czech Republic: the 'Chronicon Universale', a codex of the second half of the 12th century; footage of the 1968 Prague spring;

►Denmark: 1907 footage of festivities for the Danish Constitution Day in Haslev; 'Præsten i Vejlbye', an 1829 Danish crime story by Steen Steensen Blicher. ►Estonia: a 1926 History of Estonian Folk Costumes; a luxurious bookbinding in the Art Nouveau style made for the collection of poems (Tartu; 1904) of the Estonian poet Ado Reinvald; ►Finland: a range of 19th century newspapers, an 1849 copy of the 'Kalevala', the Finnish national epic'. ►France: the complete works of Marcel Proust, and his handwritten notes; ‘Le penseur’ sculpted by Auguste Rodin; ►Germany: the complete works of Goethe and Schiller; handwritten music scores by Ludwig von Beethoven; ►Greece: images of ancient warships from the Hellenic maritime museum exemplifying Greece's seafaring past; a 1588 copy in ancient Greek and in Latin of Aristotle's Technē rētorikēs; ►Ireland: ‘The Tower’ by W.B. Yeats, a series of pre-WWI photographs of the Glendalough monastry; ►Italy: a series of videos illustrating how Galileo Galilei did his experiments; ►Lithuania: a 100 year old recording of the song ‘Aspadainnosiu; Oj turiau, dariau’; ►Luxemburg: several back-

volumes of the magazine “A-Z Luxemburger illustrierte Wochenschrift” from the period just before WW II; documentary material on the signature of the Treaty of Rome in 1957 ►Malta: the front page of the first newspaper published in Malta in 1798; Netherlands: paintings by the 17th century Dutch painter Jan Steen; ►Poland: the ‘Holy Cross Sermons’ the oldest record in the Polish language in the collections of the Polish National Library; ►Portugal: a 1325 charter from King Alphonse IV to the city of Lisbon confirming its privileges; ►Romania: a collection of Dacian coins from the pre-Roman period; ►Slovakia: a series of images of Bratislava Castle; an amazing collection of ancient Arab, Turkish and Persian manuscripts from the university library in Bratislava; ►Spain: a wonderfully illuminated codex from 1047 with comments on the Apocalypse made by the monk Beatus, written for King Ferdinand I and Queen Sancha of Castile and León; ►Sweden: the 'Rök runestone' from around 800 AD, which can be seen as the start of Swedish literature; ►UK: the 1476 Caxton edition of the Canterbury Tales, the first substantial book to be printed in England; several editions of the 'Origin of species' by Charles Darwin. ▄

the a comet seen in It may have beeng of 5 BC rin sp concludes that Jesus was born in the autumn of 7 BC. American astronomical historian Michael Molnar has come up with even more spectacular astrological perspective. Molnar has checked out the astrological charts for the last decade BC, looking for strange configurations that would have excited the Magi. On 17 April 6 BC, Jupiter, the king of the planets, was rising just before the Sun. This significant event was known to ancient astrologers as "rising in the east" - just as we read in the Bible. And simultaneously, the moon moved right in front of Jupiter. Such occultations are very rare, and astrologically extremely important. So this date marked the birth chart of someone extremely important - not just a king, but the Messiah. In the chart, the sign of Aries was picked out by the Sun and Venus, the planet of love and hope. And to astrologers, Aries represented the kingdom of Judaea. According to Molnar, that's why the Magi were inspired to trek across the desert to the capital of Judaea, Jerusalem, to enquire after the birth of the Messiah. Once there, they heard prophecies of the Messiah's birth in Bethlehem. On this reckoning, Jesus was born in the spring of 6 BC. So - was the Nativity in the autumn of 7 BC, in the aftermath of a triple conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn; in the spring of 6 BC, presaged by an occultation of Jupiter by the Moon; or in the spring of 5 BC, heralded by a comet? Or was the whole event perhaps just an embellishment to the story of Jesus. The star is, in fact, mentioned in only one of the four Gospels. St Matthew must have been aware of an Old Testament prediction that the birth of the Messiah would be accompanied

Q: Which word becomes shorter even if you add 2 more letters to it?

Answer: Short

FASCINATING FACTS ► Mozart was only five years old when he wrote the music of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." ► A fly's tastebuds are in its feet. ► The blood of an octopus is blue. ► Originally tomatoes were grown only for decoration and not for eating as it was thought that they were poisonous.

JOKE ► True Story…A boy walks into school and says to his friend George, “You know I can’t believe this. There are so many people called George in our year.” “No there aren’t” “Yes there are.” “No there aren’t” “Yes there are.” “Fine then,” his friend finally replied. “Name me ten in our year.” The boy looked at his friend a little confused. “Ok then….George, George, George, George, George, George, George, George, George and…….George!” ► Shakey went to a psychiatrist. "Doc," he said, "I've got trouble. Every time I get into bed, I think there's somebody under it. I get under the bed, I think there's somebody on top of it. Top, under, top, under. "you gotta help me, I'm going crazy!" "Just put yourself in my hands for two years," said the shrink. "Come to me three times a week, and I'll cure your fears." "How much do you charge?" "A hundred dollars per visit." "I'll sleep on it," said Shakey. Six months later the doctor met Shakey on the street. "Why didn't you ever come to see me again?" asked the psychiatrist. "For a hundred buck's a visit? A bartender cured me for ten dollars." "Is that so! How?" "He told me to cut the legs off the bed!"

FUNNY QUOTES ► "If your parents never had children, chances are you won't either." -Dick Cavett ►"I was raised by just my mum. See, my father died when I was eight years old. At least, that's what he told us in the letter..." -Drew Carey ► Wherever I go, people are waving at me. Maybe if I do a good job, they'll use all their fingers. -Frank King, Winter Olympic Games organising committee chairman. www.larnacanews.com
