Cyprus & Community News A’. This year’s excavations aimed Newsflash to remove the soil that filled the SHARE LOCAL NEWS Local and Community News Write to us at: Larnaca News, PO Box 42537, 6500 Larnaca, or EMAIL: editor@ larnacanews.com The Ministry of Communications and Works, Department of Antiquities has announced the completion of this year’s excavations at Tseri-Agkali in Nicosia district, under the direction of Archaeological Officer Efthymia Alphas who was assisted by technician/draughtsperson Mary Chamberlain and technician Elias Christophi. The excavation took place from the 27th July until the 23rd September 2010. In 1949, in the area of Agkali, approximately 2 km southeast of the modern village of Tseri and close to River Almyros, villagers of Tseri discovered an impressive underground structure with steps which was later recorded in the archives of the Department of Antiquities as an underground cistern of the Roman period. With the passing of the years, the structure filled up with soil and disappeared, until 2006 when the Department relocated it and listed it as a Monument of Schedule

structure so that its design, use and dating could be clarified. The investigations have so far revealed 40 steps of an underground staircase built out of limestone. The Ministry of Communications and Works, Department of Antiquities also announced that the French Archaeological Expedition at Pafos worked on Fabrika Hill from the 15th of April until the 10th of May, 2010. The excavation took place in two mains areas: the northern slope of the hill and behind the ancient theatre to the southeast. On the north side, the excavations continued on the east-west wall, built with stone pillars. This wall appears to be the back wall of a house, probably dating to the Hellenistic period. It was backfilled at the time of the Flavian emperors (beginning of the 2nd half of the 1st century AD). Other walls were uncovered east of this house. Excavation in this area will continue in November. A trial sondage that was opened against the main terrace wall (40 m. long), which was revealed in 2008, confirmed that this northsouth wall was built during the 1st century BC/ 1st century AD. The entire area seems to have then been filled.

Asked about the agenda of the New York meeting, Mr Downer said that “no doubt the Secretary-General will want to talk to the leaders, inter-alia, about the property question, but I am sure he will want to talk more broadly about the whole process”. The Consumer Price Index for October 2010 increased by 0,91 units or 0,80% to 115,05 units compared to 114,14 units in September 2010. News Feature by Gina Coleman What Comes Around Now Goes Around First the green ones appeared... then the blue ones; as a result, since the end of September, the residents of Larnaca, Aradippou and Livadia have finally been able to ‘do their bit’ to cut down on refuse going to landfill. They can actually send their newspapers, magazines, junk mail, cereal cartons, cardboard boxes, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, tin, cans and tetra-packs to recycling. And how that cuts back on the volume of garbage left over for the Municipalities and Community to clear.

PMD is collected from the blue bins (if you have one near you) or you can leave it bagged for collection from the pavement near your regular bins. PMD includes: plastic bottles and containers such as those from water, milk, squash, cleaning materials, shampoo, tins, Set up in association with the metal package, non-profit organisation Green Dot drinks cans and Cyprus, the recycling programme metal tubes; and on the island will cover about 85% tetra-pack containof the population in the RoC by the ers. end of the year. PMD and paper are collected on the same day – in Larnaca, starting at 8.00pm (yes, night collections) : • south of Griva Dighenia and Gregori Afxentiou Avenues up to the Police Station on Mondays • north of Griva Digheni and Gregori Afxentio and south of Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue on Tuesdays household refuse and bin it in an environmentallyfriendly way now. www.larnacanews.com

• north of Spyrou Kyprianou on Wednesdays. (by the way, Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue used to be known as

Timayia Avenue if that helps!) Aradippou collections are on Thursdays, starting at 7.30am and Livadia on Friday mornings, also starting at 7.30am Added to all that, Cyta now accepts mobile phones, batteries and chargers for recycling. The only blip on the horizon would seem to be reports in the Cyprus Mail from a very large complex in Larnaca that – according to its Management Committee – ‘the Municipality is so delighted with the private skip it uses for rubbish, that it has agreed to refund all the costs.’ Residents are permitted to put anything in the skip and it all goes to landfill. Surely not! Not with dumping at landfill now costing in excess of 65Euros a tonne and recycling available for items that normally constitute about 30-45% of domestic refuse. A skip the owners on the site didn’t even want in the first place. No, no, no Larnaca News is sure that Mr Mayor and his team wouldn’t stand for that. If it had been the case in the past, Larnaca News has confidence it will be stopped now. Larnaca News 11

LARNACANEWSFEATURE

Transform Your Life Through Better Hearing By Dr. George Panayiotou(with permission from BHI) In our modern, visually oriented society, it is generally perceived that hearing is a second-rate sense to vision. However, there is nothing second-rate about the implications of untreated hearing loss. Many people with hearing loss delay getting help because they are unaware of the fact that receiving early treatment for hearing loss can literally transform their lives. Untreated hearing loss can have many negative consequences that are not normally associated with hearing problems, for example being subject to subtle or even overt discrimination and being excluded from gatherings, conversations and meetings. Inability to communicate effectively can ultimately lead to sadness, depression, frustration, anxiety, social isolation, emotional turmoil and insecurity. The World Health Organization suggests that around 16% of all adult Europeans (more that 55 million people) suffer from hearing loss. Untreated hearing loss costs Europe 213 billion Euros per year in the form of lost earnings. Extensive research demonstrates that treatment with modern hearing aids brings measurable improvements in social, emotional, psychological, and physical well being, for both patients and their spouses and families, for example: •Greater job effectiveness and better earning power. (An estimated 65% of people with hearing loss are younger than retirement age.) •More participation in group activities e.g. church services www.larnacanews.com

and social events. •Improved interpersonal relationships, greater intimacy and a better sense of control in professional, social and family gatherings. Hearing is crucial to effective communication and to developing meaningful relationships as well as enjoying life, whether it is by participating fully in a conversation between friends, or enjoying aesthetic pleasures like music and television. Better hearing helps you perform more effectively, whether in business situations or engaging in hobbies or sports - all of life's activities that include a wealth of auditory cues and signals. Better hearing also gives you an enhanced sense of security, and is critical where safety is concerned; for instance when caring for young children or out in busy traffic. Hearing aid technology, like all computer-

related technology, has made this an exciting time with more choices than ever for consumers. When searching for the right hearing aid it is important to begin by locating a caring, professionally certified, and competent Audiologist. Remember to ask for professional qualifications and proven experience prior to any engagement. Also enquire about trial period options, commitment to after-sales service and support, warranty periods and payment options. Don’t put up with hearing loss any longer – contact me at my state-of-the-art Audiology Centre and start to enjoy a more fulfilling life for you and your family. This winter there are a variety of events being held to mark the 50th anniversary of independence of the Republic of Cyprus and a particularly special one will be the new Dancecyprus production The World of Cyprus. This new ballet is extra special for two reasons – firstly this is the first time that the national dance company has performed a full length ballet and secondly, The World of Cyprus has been choreographed by Carolina Constantinou, the Limassol born choreographer who has been inspired by the work of famous Cypriot painter Adamantios Diamantis. This will be the premiere of the ballet and there will be 26 dancers on stage including professional dancers from both Cyprus and other European countries, Dancecyprus Junior Associates - and the Cypriot painter, Loukis Agrotis. This exciting new ballet is a marvellous blend of neoclassical and contemporary choreography and the melodies are recognisable as they are from such popular Cypriot/Greek musicians as Hadjidakis and Theodorakis and poetry by George Seferis is interwoven into the ballet. The Adamantios Diamantis painting -The World of Cyprus inspired Carolina. The painting is a sizeable work as it is on 11 canvases measuring 17.50m x 1.75m, which took the artist several years to complete using material he had sketched on journeys across the island when he visited numerous villages. Following the Turkish invasion in July 1974 the artist took his painting to Greece for safety and today it hangs in the Teloglion Museum in the University of Thessalonica. Dance Cyprus performances of The World of Cyprus will take place on Sunday 12 December in the Municipal Theatre in Larnaca starting at 8.30pm Tickets €20.00. DITCH THE DISH Watch UK TV via internet

With a Channel Green TV set top box you can now receive over 65 channels, including all of your favourite UK shows. Simply register for your monthly service charge, plug the set top box into your broadband router, connect it up to your television and you’ll be able to sit back and enjoy all your favourite soaps and dramas and even catch up with events back home in Blighty. How do we do this? With IPTV, that’s Internet Protocol Television, or put more simply, telly through the net. Our specially designed, unique set top box requires nothing more than a consistent 2Mb download speed and an Ethernet cable to de

liver those programmes to you, wherever you are, whenever you want. Crucially this means there is no longer any need for a lengthy and disruptive installation process, and the „man with a van“, no need for miles of cables and no need for that huge, ugly satellite dish.

Included with the set top box is a remote control with which you can navigate through the EPG, Electronic Programme Guide or menu. You can choose from live (live streaming of British programmes), My PVR (My Personal Video Recorder - your recorded favourites), settings (where you can set Parental Controls or check up on your systems details) and, last but not least, on demand (e.g movie channels also at any given time you can access the last fourteen days of programmes) with all of this you will be hard pushed to ever miss any of your favourite shows again. The set top box itself

is light and portable, in effect meaning that you can use it to watch TV anywhere in your house, provided you can get that internet connection. And, if you can’t, then you have the option to use a set of Homeplugs, which slot into any power points in your home and carry the signal through the ringmain to your chosen screen via the set top box. Sound great? Well here’s your chance to win one. We’re going to be running a fortnightly competition over the next eight weeks where you can win a set top box, culminating in a special Christmas competition. All you have to do is answer a simple question and the prize could be yours! For more information on the system, to buy online or find your nearest agent visit

www.freeuk.tv

Check out,www.freeuk.tv to find the answer!

Details must be filled in clearly to enable us to contact the winner and ensure the delivery of the box. Readers must cut out the coupon and send completed to: Satellite Steve Ltd, Shop 20, Galaxias Street 3, Oroklini, 7041 Larnaca marking the envelope Channel Green TV. The first coupon drawn wins “set top box”. Winner will be announced in the next competition due in December. *Please note photocopies will not be accepted.

LARNACANEWSWELLBEING

Integrate Your Body, Brain And Mind by Dr. Mirjana Duvnjak-Vakos, MD In the 21st century the watchword of biology is “SYSTEMS”. Everything is very connected and interdependent in all living beings, including humans. We are being flooded with evidence of integration of functions in our bodies and brains. The functions of the trillions of cells in our body integrated in the tissues, organs, glands, systems and the body as a whole are influenced not only by our genetic make-up, but also by food we consume, the environment we live in, our mind, consciousness and interconnectedness with the universe. What does this have to do with our health? In the 20th century, medicine chopped the body up into specialities—neurology, cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, etc. All these doctor-specialists were very busy attending to their little parts of you, one at a time. But, who was minding the whole picture? Very few doctors had that skill. More and more new evidence demands a fresh approach. Rather than treating the body as a collection of separate body organs, the new approach - FUNCTIONAL

DIAGNOSTIC MEDICINE - looks at how our cells and systems flourish and how they get into trouble. Functional Medicine www.larnacanews.com

goes beyond symptoms and disease and looks for roots of the problems and finds solutions to them, helping the body to heal itself. In the 21st century it is also becoming clear that brain and body are linked together in such a way that if the body is in trouble, the brain is affected as well, and vice versa. The chemical imbalances underlying "psychiatric illness" can now be seen as linked to more systemic, chemical, metabolic problems and can be treated at the bodily level. With so much stress and so many chemicals (food, water, cleaning material) and other environmental challenges, it is no wonder that our body and brain functions are not what they should be. If you feel that your brain is 'broken', you are not alone. You have been touched by an epidemic. It deprives children of their future (ADD, autism); the elderly of their past (memory loss, Alzheimer's); and adults of their present (depression, anxiety, brain fog). Dr. Mark Hyman, FM practitioner, calls these problems 'broken brains'. These seemingly different disorders are all really the same problem imbalances in body systems. And yet, these chronic illnesses have been largely unaddressed by the medical community, leaving millions of people to suffer alone, trapped in their deteriorating minds. Whether you suffer from psychiatric disorders, like depression, or a neurological disorder like Alzheimer's, the simple fact is this - You brain is not working well. More and more people are under constant pressure; days feel empty and meaningless, you lose grip with reality, your memory gets

worse every day. It is disturbing that in 2006, antidepressant sales soared to over $1.9 billion. There are predictions that Alzheimer`s disease will affect 35-50% of people over eighty-five years of age. More than 8 million (1 in 10) children now take stimulant medication (Ritalin). Autism rates have increased from 3 in 10,000 children to 1 in 166 children over the last decade. Learning disabilities affect between 5 and 10 percent of school age children. Why is this so? Today psychiatrists and neurologists look in the wrong direction - 'chemical imbalances in our brains', treating them with the 'latest' drug or therapeutic approach, ignoring the rest of the body despite more and more research showing that mood, memory, attention and behaviour problems, and most other 'brain disorders' have their root in the rest of the body; in treatable imbalances in the body's key systems. Treating psychiatric and neurologic disorders with 'balancing brain chemistry' is not going to help if the body and brain are nutritionally, metabolically, and biochemically imbalanced. The body-mind is a single, dynamic, bi-directional system. What you do to your body you do Larnaca News 21

Mind, Body and Soul Makeover Imagine looking in the mirror and seeing a confident, radiant person smiling back at you, full of energy and happiness. Sounds good? Well, you can have all this and more, according to international trainers Dr Leila and Phil Edwards, of ‘The Makeover Experience’, featured in the global media. They are bringing their unique and inspirational ‘Makeover Your Life’ course to Cyprus for the first time on 20th-21st November at the Classic Hotel in Nicosia. As experts in Life and Career Coaching, they are highly qualified to help you change your life for the better, using a range of powerful techniques for personal and professional development. Some of these are based on systems of traditional healing and ancient wisdom, such as acupuncture, yoga and hypnosis; others involve the latest cutting-edge research into biofeedback, brainfunctioning and Neuro-Linguistic Programming™ (NLP). “Human beings aren’t born with an instruction manual”, says Dr Leila, who has an impressive track record as a coach, therapist, academic and author. She uses Clinical Hypnotherapy, NLP,

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Technologies for Creating™, to enable her clients to accelerate learning and achieve their goals. “Because we learned our responses from an early age, we tend to think that they are fixed and that we can’t change. People who are stuck in this ‘reactive-responsive’ attitude tend to see themselves as victims of circumstances, thinking 'this is just how I am'. In fact this is not the case. The human brain is extremely flexible and this means that we can change, regardless of age or situation, as long as we know how to harness the power of the mind". Dr Leila believes that a positive mental attitude is the key to achieving one’s goals in life and that people can learn how to create a new blueprint for health and well-being. Phil, an NLP Master and Trainer and instructor in various types of energy healing, including Tai Chi and Chinese Yoga, agrees. “People who think of themselves as ‘losers’ are likely to be perceived in the same way by others and will tend to be ‘unlucky’. People who have high self-esteem and are confident communicators are more likely to be trusted and respected. Our behaviour and body language reflect our inner ‘blueprint’ of ourselves, whether or not we are aware of this. Those who exude a sense of purpose and determination are more likely to be promoted at work and to achieve their goals, regardless of circumstances”. Mental attitude has a

huge effect on our quality of life and chances of success. The negative thoughts and emotions associated with stress also play a major role in all disease, both physical and psychological. But, according to the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), forward-looking approaches can lift people out of depression, fear and anxiety, “enabling people to build on the positive side of their personalities and situations”. Dr Leila and Phil specialise in kick-starting the process of positive change from the inside out, creating a cycle of success and well-being that will ‘Makeover Your Life!’ To register, contact: Dr Leila & Phil Edwards, on tel/fax: 17-592019 or mobile: 39667623 or e-mail: info@themakeoverexperience. com. Dear Tess by Tracey Stratton

LARNACANEWSAGONYCORNER

Dear Tess, My father is a bad tempered drunk. My mother has had a miserable life as my father doesn't work, nor does he contribute to family life. I find it difficult to cope with seeing my mother's emotional, physical and mental health deteriorating. My brother and sister offer no support and seem to 'turn a blind eye'. I think they are frightened of my father. My parents are well off and they are worried about my father turning against them and leaving them out of his will. I don't care whether I get any inheritance or not - what I want is for my mother to see how she is throwing her life away - she is only 55yrs old. When I urge my mother to leave she just says "he's my husband, I can't leave him". With hope, - LN Reader Dear Reader, It must be heartbreaking for you to see your mother treated in this way and see her so unhappy in her home. I realise it must be hard for you to hear her say she won't leave, but if she is saying

she wants to stay with your father you have to respect her choice. There are probably many reasons she can't and won't leave - some of which are likely to be financial, emotional, the value she places on her marriage vows and her values in general. She is very lucky to have you, and no doubt realises and appreciates the love and support you give her. Continue to give this love and support whilst recognising you have no control over the choices other people make no matter how hard they are for the rest of us to understand. You will be there in the future to give her all the support she needs if at some time in the future she decides to leave.

Tess

With best wishes,

Whether you take my advice or not, it is my opinion on what I would do in similar circumstances. Neither I, nor the Magazine will be held responsible for any repercussions from you taking my advice or not. The final decision has to be yours. Remember, every choice you make has consequences, which can be good or bad - so think very carefully before you act.

Steve Carr of Fraser Mackinlay UK Government is under pressure from Unions, Workers and Regulators to address the issue. The only solution is to cut future pension benefits and to close final salary schemes. If you are in a Personal Pension Plan how well is it being managed? When did your pension provider last provide you with a valuation? How strong are the assets of your pension provider? Transferring your UK Pension to a “Qualified Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme” known as QROPS is an option only available to you if you are already or soon to be non UK resident. QROPS provide tax free cash and tax free income if you are age over 55. You have more security and better investment choice, improved death benefits, you can consolidate several small schemes into one scheme and you will never be forced to purchase an annuity. However seek advice from Fraser Mackinlay fast as future transfer values are being reduced by “hard up” Pension Providers. At Fraser Mackinlay investment costs are kept low by offering a QROPS without the need to incur high bond charges. If you missed the recent Question Time Presentation then it’s not too late to put your question to the experts. Blast From The Past Back To The...Future? by Sean Dunne Everybody knows the situation about humankind’s reliability on oil and the research into future energy alternatives. There have been many kinds of replacements touted, such as bio-gas and hydrogen, but nothing is putting up as great an argument as electric powered automobiles. Big car manufacturers such as Nissan, Ford and General Motors have been producing both electric and hydrogen cars and it is interesting to see whether electric or hydrogen-powered cars will emerge as the most viable replacement for the petrol engine. Listed here are a few of the cars making waves across the globe as benchmarks on which to base the blueprint for the future of car engine production that are economical, practical and good to look at. Audi E-Tron The E-Tron is a very stylish looking two-seat sports car currently only in the concept stage which runs exclusively on battery power. Two electric motors mounted on the rear axle propel it from zero to 62 mph -- 100 km per hour -- in 5.9 seconds. That's not bad, considering some of the fastest, gas-guzzling cars in the world take about four seconds. To save weight, the e-tron is built on a rigid aluminium frame, with the body panels

made of fibre-reinforced plastics. Honda FCX Clarity Honda are probably the most well documented car manufacturer to be researching alternative fuels, so its no surprise that they have a lot of cars powered by various alternative fuels making waves in the media. One of the most popular has been the FCX Clarity. The Clarity is powered by Honda’s fuel cell - combining hydrogen with oxygen to produce electricity. The most distinctive feature (other than the fuel cell itself), is the TURN TO PAGE 31

LARNACANEWSMOTORS streamlined layout made possible by its compact and efficient power-train components. And make no mistake; the FCX Clarity FCEV is an electric car. The electricity then powers the electric motor, which in turn propels the vehicle. Water is the only byproduct the FCX Clarity FCEV leaves behind. This technology has enabled the Clarity to become over 397 pounds lighter, it has 120% better power-to-weight ratio, it’s 20% more fuel efficient and it is 45% more compact and 10% more energy-efficient. BMW Concept ActiveE The BMW Concept ActiveE is a battery-powered version of the BMW 1 Series coupe. Assuming BMW eventually offers it to the public, it's great news for eco-minded auto enthusiasts with a small family. The BMW 1 Series is the BMW brand's smallest four-seater, with room for two (small) passengers in the back seat. BMW's Mini brand has already introduced a small test fleet of electric cars in the United States. The BMW Concept ActiveE will serve as a similar testing role for the BMW brand. Chevrolet Volt Chevrolet added an innovative remote-control feature to the Chevy Volt at the Detroit show, even though the Volt isn't even on sale yet. The new feature is a smart-phone application that can be used to order the car to recharge itself, to monitor how fully it's charged or to start the heating or air-conditioning. Using the remote control, the driver can preschedule recharging during "off-peak" hours, when electricity is cheaper. A plug-in hybrid can be recharged with ordinary current, or from the onboard gasoline engine. It's a race between the Chevy Volt and

the Nissan Leaf to see which can be the first plug-in hybrid on the market. Today's hybrids, like the Toyota Prius, get recharged exclusively from the gasoline engine. Tesla Roadster 2.5

Tesla Motors are a name we will be hearing a lot more of in the not-so-distant future. Started in California, they already have a huge following and backing from a large number of celebrities in the US, due to American celebrities’ love for worldly causes, in this case alternative fuels, and due to Tesla producing very stylish and desirable looking cars. The most popular of these is their new Roadster 2.5. The Roadster 2.5 has an AC induction motor and single speed gear box that creates instant torque from 0 rpm. Up to 295 lbs-ft of torque and 288 horsepower are produced as the car smoothly accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. The Roadster offers supercar performance without supercar emissions. Engineered for efficiency, the zero-emissions Roadster can drive 245 miles per charge. It plugs into nearly any outlet, anywhere in the world. Lets be honest, with the technology available in a lot of these cars they do cost a small fortune, but remember; although the initial payout may be high you will never be paying for petrol or diesel ever again; a thought to ponder...

Keep up the support, and thank you all for emailing me your experiences. Isn't it funny how the weather has changed since the clocks went back? The mornings are Anorthosis definitely brigher and warmer this week but there is a chill in the evenings and I had to wear Famagusta a jacket to last week’s AEK-PAPHOS match, so don’t get caught out in a T-Shirt unless you’re really brave; looks like I’ll actually get to wear my supporters scarf after all. Glancing at the league table there’s a bit of a pattern emerging with Anorthosis and AEK, Alki and Ermis. Collecting most points this month was AEK with 7 and Anorthosis 6, AEK while Alki and Ermis collected 2 points each. Both big guns of Nicosia are ominously hovering Larnaca around the top of the league table. Apoel is looking the in form team at the moment and are hot favourites to take the title with the many corner shop bookies we have here in Larnaca. Something I’ve noticed myself and wanted to mention is, where have all the Professional Cypriot footballers gone? Seems like the Ermis Aradippou teams are copying the UK and employing mostly foreigners. I’ve had a look into the ruling Larnaca for players in Cyprus and each team is allowed 5 players outside of the European Union and 17 players inside the European Union; the rest can be made up of Cypriot players so in theory a team could have 22 foreign players if they choose. Another observation I made is where are all the away supporters? The games I have gone to, admittedly all home games, I could count the away supporters on one hand. Come Alki on people it’s not like you have to travel 100s of Larnaca miles to get to the stadiums.

Spotlight On Larnaca Football ALKI by Alex Andreou

LARNACANEWSFEATURE

The Association was founded on the 10th April, 1948, by a group of forward-looking people. The Constituent Assembly then made the decision to call the club 'ALKI', a name still used today. ALKI's presence in the Cypriot Football League spans over six decades. The Board has targets of continuing their established standing and also to take further steps to lead the Association into a brilliant and productive future for the coming decades. When originally established, the Association created a football team that became part of the K.E.P.O. However in 1954 ALKI joined the K.O.P leagues and constantly strove to succeed in championship after championship under the Federation. ALKI have participated in 42 Division 1 Leagues and 19 Division 2 Championships, as well as taken part in all of the associated Cyprus Cups. Aside from the club's sports activities, the Club boasts a rich ethnic-cultural support. Their willingness for ALKI to offer all they can on and off the pitch has been hindered by economic problems in the past, problmes that unfortunately all sports clubs in Cyprus have fought against. The operation of the ALKI Association is governed by the Statute, run by a 25-strong Council. The Council is elected annually by the General Assembly, which is the supreme rank of the Society, consisting of 200 active members. The Association does not operate as a nonprofit organisation. The highest purposes of the Association are to: - Continue to offer selfless support to the community through sport. - Make the Association work place healthy and socially integrated - Create all necessary conditions that will put the Club at the highest rungs of Cypriot society. ALKI's awards and achievemnts include: - Cyprus Cup Finalists: 1967, 1970, 1976, 1977, 1980 - Division 2 Titles: 1982, 2001 2010 - UEFA Cup participation: 1979 ALKI's current club captain is Kostas Kaiafas, son of Cyprus' famous Sotiris Kaiafas, winner of the 1975/76 European Golden Boot Award. His achievements include being Omonia's second longest serving player, falling short of becoming their longest serving player by a mere five games. ALKI have a solid foundation of Academy players, with competitive teams at U15, U17, U19 and U21 levels. ALKI's first team currently play their home matches at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium, with a capacity of up to 13,000. www.larnacanews.com

NEW RELEASES Gaming News by Alex Andreou

Call of Duty: Black Ops, known simply as Black Ops is the seventh main installment in the blockbuster first-person shooter franchise, Call of Duty. The newest installment Black Ops is set to break all kinds of media records and has already beaten all of its predecessors in pre-order sales. Developed by Treyarch, Black Ops takes you into one of the most dangerous periods of recent human history, equipped with exclusive weaponry and equipment, as well as millions of online players to challenge you in various modes. Even the frenzied action of the four player zombie-killing mode comes back into the game after its introduction in Call of Duty: World at War. Having trudging undead zoning in on you and your friends is certainly a bizarre yet humourous bit of action and worthy of some of your time. New modes include a multiplayer Combat Training mode where you can level up and unlock new www.larnacanews.com

equipment, simulating an online competitive multiplayer game, but with AI bots instead of human players. Theatre mode also allows you to relive your favourite moments from your favourite matches and show them off to all of your friends for a bit of fun rivalry. Something else that may tickle some people’s fancy is the capability to play Black Ops in stereoscopic 3D. Obviously at the moment this will apply to very few people, but with the right glasses, wires and 3D TV, Black Ops becomes a dizzyingly 3D world right in front of your eyes. The storyline is brilliant,

certainly a challenge to any of its predecessors and the gameplay as usual is top notch, with realistic sound effects, crazy displays of bullet fire and breathtaking action. Call of Duty: Black Ops is certainly worthy of the Call of Duty name.

History of The Month November by Alex Andreou

Nearly Christmas time already. The kids are writing their wish lists and asking for evey gadget, book, toy and game they come by. Whilst this may be true, we're not quite there yet, so let's see what November has given the world over the years... King Tutenkhamun is a name most people will have heard. It was in November 1922 that the boy king's tomb in the Valley of the Kings was discovered nearly fully intact by an archaeologist named Howard Carter and his sponsor, Lord Carnarvon. In what must have been a momentous occasion the chamber was found filled to the ceiling with golden items, parts of a chariot and two life sized statues of the boy pharoah himself guarding over the sealed

www.larnacanews.com

entrance. Once the items had been extricated with the utmost care, they were taken outside on stretchers to a growing number of tourists and reporters; the discovery had spread like wildifre and sparked interest from all over the world. These items however were only the beginning; Carter found the burial chamber past another sealed door. Inside, the chamber was nearly completely taken up by four shrines weighing half a ton each. Once these had been carefully disassembled, the sarcophagus underneath was discovered. Opening the quartzite sarcophagus revealed a beautifully gilded, wooden coffin in a distinctly human shape. It took a year and a half before the coffin was opened, as extracting the contents of the chambers had taken precedence. Lifting the lid of the coffin revealed another smaller coffin, and inside this was another smaller coffin, made entirely of gold. The royal mummy of Tutankhamun had been found; the first in 3,300 years to be found untoched since his burial. Moreover, not even a year after the discovery, Lord

Carnarvon died of an infected mosquito bite, filling newspapers with stories of the 'Curse of the Pharoah'. Forgive my indulgence, but i do so love stories of ancient civilisations.. One other historic event of November is of course celebrated on the 5th November. Yes, it's Guy Fawkes Night. This night commemorates the anniversary of the failed plot to blow up the House of Lords by provincial English Catholics, in order to assassinate the Protestand King James I of England and VI of Scotland. In response to the saving of the King, it was permitted for the lower classes to build bonfires and celebrate. The tradition has carried on to this very day, with the addition of some beautiful displays of fireworks.

LARNACANEWSSCIENCE&TECHNOLOGY

Astronomy Mystery Solved: Dirty NASA Space Shuttles? They're big and fast and fly in space, but NASA's space shuttles are far from being shiny white spaceships straight off the factory floor. Discovery is NASA's oldest flying space shuttle and the most-flown of the agency's three-orbiter fleet. It is poised to blast off from Florida on Nov. 1 to make one last delivery to the International Space Station before being retired in 2011 along with the rest of NASA's shuttle program. After 26 years of spaceflight (Discovery first launched in August 1984), the shuttle shows its age. Its white and black exterior is marred with black streaks. Many people have wondered why NASA's shuttles tend to look old and busted! (Photo: Space Shuttle Discovery's Worn Look, Credits:NASA/Ben Cooper) Discovery and other shuttles earn their weathering mainly from the searing heat of re-entry through Earth's atmosphere, when they are subjected to scorching hot temperatures of up to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit (1,649 degrees Celsius). The upcoming trip to the space station will be Discovery's 39th spaceflight and NASA's 133rd shuttle mission. NASA's first two shuttles, Columbia and Challenger, were older than Discovery, but both were lost in spaceflight tragedies. Not everything is replaced. While NASA engineers routinely inspect each shuttle for dings and damage after each flight, they only replace equipment that really needs it. That means insulation blankets, tiles and other gear – even if they look dirty or worn – stay on the ship if they can still do their job. The heat-resistant carbon composite panels along Discovery's wings and the black ceramic tiles on its underbelly are also subject to age. Older tiles on Discovery look streaked from the plasma environment of re-entry. They stand out in photos because new tiles still appear a pristine dark black. NASA has two final shuttle missions scheduled and is hoping for final funding approval from Congress for one extra flight, before retiring its three orbiters in 2011. The shuttles (Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour) are being retired to make way for a new space plan aimed at sending astronauts to an asteroid by 2025 and ultimately onto Mars.

deliver a storage room and the humanoid robot helper Robonaut 2 to the International Space Station during its 11-day spaceflight. Endeavour will launch on its final flight on Feb. 27, 2011, with the potential extra shuttle flight slated for no earlier than June 2011. NASA ultimately plans to send its space shuttles to museums for exhibit across the USA. Credits: SPACE.com By George Troullias Director KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY

to your brain. Heal your body and you heal your brain. At the same time, your thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes, traumas and life experiences directly influence your biology. What you think can influence how sick or well you are. The field of medicine integrating healing of body-mindsoul is known as MIND-BODY MEDICINE. It is an important contribution to the field of science and is researched by major institutions such as Harvard and Stanford. Sadly, most physicians do not apply this knowledge in their practice. They are too busy treating their patients' diseases, to be able to gain this valuable knowledge and actually heal their ills. Yet the body directly and powerfully influences the brain. Nutritional status, hormonal imbalances, food allergies and toxins, as well as digestive, immune and metabolic imbalances primarily influence mood, behaviour, attention, and attitude. The new method, called Functional Diagnostic Medicine has a completely new approach to all chronic diseases (body, brain and mind), one that allows us to see how everything is connected. With it we can truly treat and cure disease. Unlike conventional medicine, FM personalises treatment, based on a patient's unique needs. Understanding this allows us to develop unique methods to treat people, not diseases. This approach is based on “STAYING IN BALANCE” by: - optimising nutrition - Enhancing detoxification - balancing your hormones - boosting energy metabolism - cooling inflammation - fixing your digestion - calming your mind By treating these imbalances, we now have a way to reverse brain & body disorders. But one question remains: What creates these imbalances? Most likely answer: We are missing the essential raw materials for life and health; whole, real foods rich in phytonutrients and fibre, vitamins and minerals, oxygen, clean water and air, light, sleep, exercise, deep relaxation (meditation), love, connection and community, meaning and purpose. LARNACANEWSLETTERS

Have Your Say by The Editor Dear Editor, There seems to be great excitement with everyone shouting 'Hooray', Lidl is opening in Cyprus, by the time this letter appears in print they will probably have opened. Let us not get over-excited. Whilst I agree that something must be done to bring down the cost of food in Cyprus perhaps this is not the way to do it, let us look at the wider picture. My experience of Lidl in the UK is that if you choose carefully you may be able to buy some of your food items at this shop but I find it is not possible to buy all your food, as your would in a 'mainstream' supermarket. A lot of their lines are cheap and this is reflected in the quality. When reducing price, quality suffers, quality in food is nutritional value. No doubt Lidl have already put money into the Cypriot economy by building the supermarkets and will no doubt continue to do so by employing Cypriot labour. But will they buy locally produced food to sell in their supermarkets? If my experience in the UK is anything to go by the majority of food will be imported from Germany. For each Euro spent in the shop a proportion has to go towards the cost of selling the items, shipping them great distances into Cyprus, making a profit for Lidl share-holders, how much is left for the manufacturer? Once all the costs have been taken out there should be an amount left called 'profit'. If I spend my money in a Cypriotowned shop this profit will be placed into a local bank and will most probably be spent on the island. Will that be the case with Lidl? Probably not, within a short time of the www.larnacanews.com

money going into the till I would image it will be making it's way to Germany and will have left the island for good, not a situation that will benefit the Cypriot economy. Let us hope this is not the case in our head-long rush for cheaper food. - Tony Hardwicke Oroklini Hi Tony, I have actually heard many people offer a similar view to your outlook. From what I understand, there are also many more opinions out there, one of which is that the introduction of Lidl will result in a reduction of prices in the other supermarkets in Cyprus. There is already evidence of this happening with other supermarket chains trying to match Lidl's prices. A vast majority seem to want Lidl for the competitive pricing change that will follow it, rather than actually shopping there week in, week out. We shall soon see, I'm sure. - The Editor Dear Editor, Ladies are travelling from Oroklini to Paralimni to be part of a Thursday Lady's Morning Coffee group (The Eastern Cyprus Coffee Morning Group) in a local tavern; a bunch of ladies getting together with an occasional outting to various places of interest. This group is special though. They host various fund raising events to raise enough money for a Mobile Oxygen Concentrator enabling patients to move around while still receiving their supply of Oxygen and medication. These wonderful ladies have

managed to collect enough for not just one unit, but two, and will continue to raise money in this way. So ladies of Larnaca, how about doing something life changing, like these wonderful ladies have done. What have you got to lose? You make new friends, have a cuppa, and go for a day out now and again, and, more importantly, you get the chance to change somebody's life for the better. P.S As of writing this, two units have been presented to the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients and Friends. For Further info email: carwillis@gmail.com Regards, - Bryan Pearce (One Proud Husband) Hi Bryan, It is great to hear of charity successes and personal fulfillment. It's also great to hear that people make such an effort to enjoy themselves and, at the same time, help others. Maybe your letter will inspire others to take up the cudgel and do similar things themselves. Regards, - Editor
