Paschalides, who recently finished a three day trip to Moscow, where he met top tourism agents and officials said, “By August 31st Russian visitors to Cyprus had reached 157.000, marking an increase of 50% compared to the same period last year”. By the end of the year the increase is expected to hit the 60% mark. He added that the establishment of three more Cyprus Consulates in the large cities Samara, Yekaterinburg and Krasnodar, combined with a coordinated policy of development of the Cypriot tourist product within the Russian periphery and the specialisation of the product to appeal to large groups of Russians such as religious and athletic

Russia is Cyprus’ second best client after Britain according to Cyprus Tourism Organisation’s General Manager, Lefkos Phylaktides. He also confirmed that Russian tourists spend an average of 900 Euro per head as opposed to 600 Euro per head spent by British tourists. ► Demetris Christofias at the International Meeting for Peace in Barcelona President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has stressed that the Greek Cypriot side proceeds to the UN – led Cyprus talks to achieve a mutually acceptable solution of the political problem in Cyprus and “give peace a real chance”. Addressing the International Meeting for Peace in Barcelona, organised by the Sant Egidio Community and the Archdiocese of Barcelona, President Christofias said that his ultimate goal is to give the next generations a reunified country for all its citizens. “We are well aware that this is a difficult task but we have to build a peaceful future and give the next generations a reunified country for all its children, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins”, he said.
President Christofias stressed that “in a Europe which unites, it is unacceptable that Cyprus and its people remain divided”. He also referred to the International Meeting for Peace, which took place two years ago in Cyprus referring to “a country which still remains divided after the Turkish invasion and the occupation of its northern part by Turkish troops”. The Cypriot President emphasised the problems faced by the modern civilisation, such as wars, the financial crisis, as well as racism and non–tolerance. TURN TO PAGE 7

FROM PAGE 5 Addressing the participants at the International Conference for Peace, he said that politics alone cannot handle each and every problem, adding that “part of the responsibility lies with you, the distinguished representatives of great world religions”. He said that the Cypriot Embassy at the Holy See monitors with great interest the inter-religious dialogue and cooperation for a more just world. The Cypriot President referred to the Cypriot government’s cooperation with the Sant Egidio Community in Africa, which includes medical treatment for AIDS patients, saying that this is “a token of solidarity which reminds us that we must not turn a blind eye to the painful consequences of this serious pandemic in the African continent”. Present at the International Meeting are 300 religious representatives of the world’s great spiritual traditions, including delegations from eleven different Orthodox Churches, whilst great representation also comes from the Anglican world and Protestant Churches, as well as various Christian communions. Judaism is represented by more than 20 personalities, while Islam is represented in Barcelona by more than 30 highlevel personalities. The Asian religions (Buddhism, Tenrikyo,
www.larnacanews.com
Rissho Kosei Kai, Jainism, Hinduism) are present with many high level delegations. There are also political representatives from around the world, Presidents, Ministers and diplomats from many countries in Europe and outside Europe. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 and UN-led peace talks are underway aiming at reaching a political solution to the problem and reunifying the country under one federal roof. ► Organic Ready Meals Available in Cyprus The Yum Company is a manufacturer of fresh, ready meals for children, which is the first of its kind in Cyprus. At last, freshly prepared organic ready meals for children have arrived in the shops. The Yum Company has introduced a new range of ready meals for children, a new concept in Cyprus where freshly-prepared, chilled food is hard to find. Cooking for children is timeconsuming and whilst we all want to feed them the very best, it's not always possible with today's fast-fuelled lifestyles. The
Yum Company has responded to this demand with the launch of a range of ready meals made using 100% organic ingredients. The company is LACON certified which means that it is subject to stringent organic standards. Manufactured in an eco-friendly kitchen facility, the meals are prepared by hand and ingredients are sourced wherever possible from organic producers in Cyprus, thus also benefiting the island's growing organic farming industry. FROM PAGE 7 The introduction of these new meals is a welcome addition to your children's diet. Because of the lack of available choices so far, it has not always been possible to give children "fast" food that is also healthy, particularly when one is short on time or in a hurry. ►Lidl Nears Grand Opening in Cyprus One of Larnaca’s biggest complaints is without a doubt the price of food and drink. By the end of the month however, Larnaca may well have an answer to their questions. Lidl, the German discount supermarket chain with roughly 9,000 stores in 25 countries, has finally set up shop in Cyprus. It took six years of market research to finally bring Lidl to the island. The food and beverage market in Cyprus certainly needs the new addition and the people of Larnaca and Cyprus are eagerly anticipating its arrival. The believed openings of the first stores across the island are being kept under wraps with the exact opening dates and stores to be opened unknown. The official statement from Lidl Cyprus says, “By the end of October a certain number of stores will be opening, covering the largest portion of the Republic of Cyprus.” So far the stores have created at least 450 new jobs and should
give people a choice for cheaper food and drink. In the 1930s Lidl was first opened as a simple grocery wholesaler in Germany and is now one of the largest grocery retailers in Europe. The first Lidl stores were opened in 1973 and by 1980 the name Lidl was known all over Germany. During the 1990s Lidl opened stores outside of Germany for the first time and it has continued to grow ever since, with stores now open in nearly every country in Europe. Lidl stores are unmatched in the discount sector. They established themselves in the UK market in 1994 and now have a
total of over 530 stores. Lidl’s 21,000m² distribution centre is located in Aradippou, Larnaca, chosen due to its central position in reference to all Lidl stores across the island. The warehouse has been built with the latest technology boasting automatic ordering systems and stock tracking. Lidl also adheres to strict safety procedures, to the point of installing antiseismic shelving throughout the warehouse. Cyprus is certainly looking forward to seeing what Lidl will have in store on opening day.

News Feature 5th Cyprus International Film Festival The fifth edition of the Cyprus International Film Festival is here. The biggest, most anticipated film festival not only in Cyprus, but in a wide area, with film submissions from 85 countries in 2010, is here again. It will move, charm, entertain and present the most auspicious film trends to die-hard cinemagoers and to first- timers getting to know significant pieces of the Seventh Art. The festival, which has connected its name to avant-garde cinema in no time at all, is expressed through the oeuvre of upcoming talented directors. It is here again to challenge us to fearlessly project our dreams on celluloid. ►The Festival’s Program Signed by Tony Srour, the Festival’s Art director and also successful entrepreneur and outstanding
personality in filmmaking and film producing, this year’s Official Selection is expected to spread enthusiasm to its many fans. There are anticipated premieres, as well as surprising films; films that are going to change the way we face the world. This year’s edition will also present to the Cypriot Audience all the latest film productions. Among them there is the outstanding Strella, directed by the talented Mr. Panos Koutras. Then there are the films in competition for this year's Golden www.larnacanews.com
Aphrodite. Deriving from different origins, describing entirely different worlds, these seven films competing for the Festival’s grand prize stand out as exemplary creative films. They promise to surprise us using their provoking, seditious themes and their great artistic value. The documentary dealing with nudity in Greek filmmaking “Naked Cinema” by Vassos Gerogas is among them. They are the films selected for the Panorama section. A special screening of the legendary film “Hasaboulia of Cyprus” by the acclaimed director and actor Kostas Dimitriou, is one of this year’s program highlights and a great honour for the Organisation. Also highlighted is the tribute to Modern Polish Cinema, as well as the new visions on ancient themes in the Antiquity section. Short films and animation have once again taken their own special "route" to the audience’s heart and Festival’s screens. There will also be an innovative and exciting workshop entitled "Actor in Front of the Camera" carried out by Thanassis Sarantos. A feast of cinema is going to be held for five days at Pantheon Art Cinema, beginning with internationally acclaimed director Phedon Papamichael’s latest film right after the Opening Ceremony. ►Lost in ... Arcadia … found in Cyprus. This not only describes the warm, celebrative feeling which is going to be emitted through the whole city, but also the much awaited premiere of the film Arcadia Lost, by the director and cinematographer Phedon Papamichael. The film will make a proper opening for the festival. Through his directing, the “architect” of the amazing frames shown on the films Knight and Day, Sideways, 3:10 to Yuma, W and The Pursuit of Happiness, we will be transferred to a congenial yet metaphysical experience between yesterday and today, having the unique Nick Nolte to guide us
through the splendid landscape of Arcadia, in the Peloponnese. ►The Awards One of Cyprus International Film Festival’s main objectives is to designate and strengthen innovative film expression, script wise and form wise. It aims to support young filmmakers who have directed no more than three films by giving them awards of the Golden Aphrodite, film reels, technical services and film making equipment awards. The film and director who win Golden Aphrodite Award are chosen by an International Jury. This year’s Jury Committee consists of Cypriot actor and director Kostas Dimitriou, Greek actress and director Alexandra Pavlidou, songwriter Kostas Kakogiannis, film producer George Stefanopoulos, and film critic Alexandros Romanos Lizardos. ►Closing Ceremony The most glamorous night of the festival will take place on October 18 at the Pallas Theatre in Nicosia. All members of the Jury Committee are going to be present to announce the winner of the Golden Aphrodite. A special screening of the short film which will be made during the workshop “Actor in Front of the Camera” will also take place. Film Club of University Cyprus is going to award the best short and animation films.

Fashion For Fun Little Black Dress
LARNACANEWSFEATURE
Most fashion gurus recommend that every woman has a ‘little black dress’ stashed away in her wardrobe and certainly the LBD has become the essential item to have ever since Coco Chanel was pictured wearing a simply designed one in 1926 in the American Vogue magazine that caused a sensation. Until then, the only time a woman had worn black was when she was in mourning, but Vogue suggested to its readers that the little black dress worn by Coco was like the Model T Ford: accessible to all social classes. Since then the LBD has proven itself timeless and seasonless and in the frugal years following the Second World War, the idea gained in popularity as women found that their LBD could be versatile, long lasting and very affordable. The key to success has always been to choose a style that suits your figure but is not too fashionable as this will date it too quickly. A cleverly bought LBD can be worn from daytime in the office to an evening out with smart colourful blazer and shoes (this season’s favourite shade, beige, will look good) swapped out for evening pumps, wrap and attractive jewellery. Many famous public figures have relied on their LBD, for example Audrey Hepburn, who endorsed Chanel’s look in Breakfast at Tiffany’s whilst Wallis Simpson (Duchess of Windsor) was often photographed in hers wearing a simple pearl necklace and she once remarked, ‘When a little black dress is right, there is nothing else to wear in its place’. With the festive season now just around the corner it is well worth investing in a LBD or if you already have one tucked away, now is the time to get it out and revamp it ready for all those parties. If you are going to invest in a new dress, it is best to look for an elegant plain black one although the shops do seem to be full of ones decorated with Dolly Parton www.larnacanews.com
style starburst of glitter recently. This season’s fashion is to marry leather with lace and some dresses combine these contrasting materials with lace panels to shirtwaister style, which are fun but will not ‘prove the test of time’. If you already have a beloved LBD stand in front of the mirror and take a good look at yourself. ■ Is the length correct? This style of dress is best just on the knee. If it is too long ask a local dressmaker to shorten it. ■ If you feel the style is too plain, would some buttons help? Buttons are big fashion news this winter. ■ What shoes will you choose? Silver and gold are still popular. Or why not opt for the latest colour bloc styles with a strong colour and contrasting black heels, and invest in a wrap of the same colour. This season’s ‘must have’ for day and evening wear is the ankle boot, so look out for some smart buckled black patent leather ones with an elegant heel. ■ Put your roomy handbag back in the wardrobe and splash out on a new compact evening bag – small, clutch and stylish! ■ If you are introducing colour why not add a leather belt too? ■ Treat yourself to some new jewellery; either a beautiful string of faux pearls with matching bracelet or some large fun bauble beads in copper, silver or your own chosen colour, but keep them plain, not patterned and stylish. Herbal Tea...The Perfect Remedy? by Chrissie Flint The health benefits of herbal teas have certainly gripped the imagination of health magazines in the UK and other European countries, but in Cyprus, soothing teas made from local herbs have long been used by villagers to treat a myriad of minor health problems. Even today, if you order a cup of tea in a village you are more likely to be given a herbal tea than a tea bag. One of the most popular local herbal teas is sage or ‘Spaja’. It is considered good for both the heart and mind. Sage can ease rheumatic pains and is an effective gargle for tackling sore throats and gum problems. More often than not, if you order Spaja you will be offered a spoonful of honey rather than sugar to sweeten it as honey has plenty of health benefits too. Another popular Cypriot herbal tea is Sideritis which contains iron. It is good for preventing anaemia and is recommended for women at period time. A regular cup of Sideritis is great for lifting the

spirits. Melissa (Lemon Balm) has a lemony taste and is great if you could do with a good night’s sleep and is particularly effective when mixed with Clary sage, whilst rosemary is soothing for someone with a cold or headache. Local villagers will also advocate a daily cup of Rosemary tea to help improve the memory. Another beneficial tea for the winter months can be made from Oregano as it eases colds and coughs and is also good for easing stomach-ache, but this tea should not be given to pregnant women. Chamomile is also frequently used in teas, and can work wonders with winter colds and coughs and induce a good night’s sleep, whilst Thyme can help banish the winter blues and migraines. As well as herbal teas that can be
found on local supermarket shelves and in pharmacies, there are several local companies producing fruit teas that really do capture the wonderful taste of Cyprus fruits to be enjoyed with a good book on a cooler afternoon or evening. Take your pick!

LARNACANEWSWELLBEING
The Next Big Thing In Natural Sweeteners by Dr. Mirjana Duvnjak-Vakos, MD Every day modern man breaks Natural Laws and paddles in the dangerous waters of synthetic foods, synthetic drugs, medications and polluted environments. In the last twenty years of the 20th Century and 10 years in the 21st, we are witnessing more and more chronic diseases (cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer, Dementia, and many others) and it’s getting worse with every day. More and more research finds connections between our modern unnatural lifestyle and chronic diseases. The most recent one was at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). They conducted a study revealing that cancer cells have a particular liking for refined fructose. In tests, pancreatic cancer cells quickly fed on refined fructose and used it to divide and proliferate rapidly within the body. In the journal, Cancer Research, the findings also reveal that not all sugars are the same, a widely held belief in mainstream medicine. Tumour cells love both glucose sugar and fructose sugar, but fructose directly causes
metabolisms are quite different” wrote the team in the study paper. The study solidifies the teaching of Functional Diagnostic Medicine that there is a major difference between high-fructose corn syrup, a highlyrefined sugar commonly used in processed foods and many drinks, and refined sugar cane.
Both can lead to health problems, but high fructose corn syrup is worse in terms of cancer growth. Today we have a choice of choosing healthier alternatives in sweeteners. One such sweetener is Stevia, a 100% natural sweetener extracted from Amazon Rainforest bushes. It is much sweeter than any natural sweetener, but has a metallic aftertaste and can’t melt or bake like normal sugar. Next in line is agave nectar, a relatively lowglicemic sugar made from the roots of the agave plant. However there is controversy about whether it is 100% natural or not, and some agave nectars are mixed with high corn fructose.
cancer cells to reproduce and spread in a way that glucose does not. “Importantly, fructose and glucose www.larnacanews.com
Now there is a new choice for a natural sweetener called Coconut Palm Sugar. It is nutrient-rich, 100% pure granulated coconut nectar that looks, tastes, dissolves and melts almost exactly like sugar, but has far superior health properties than its counterpart; it is completely natural and unrefined.
Coco crystals are produced from the nectar of the blossom of tropical coconut palm trees grown in Southeast Asia. Coconut palm sugar is naturally light brown in colour and has a low glicemic index of 35 and rich contents of natural vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. It is never refined or bleached like white sugar so all its natural ingredients remain inside. Palm sugar is not a calorie free sweetener. It has calories like any other carbohydrate, but due to its relatively low glicemic index (GI35) its calories are absorbed into the bloodstream at a significantly slower rate than regular refined sugar. Soon, you’ll be able to find this 100% organic, crystallised palm sugar in Cyprus too. Try something new, tasty and, most importantly, healthy. Discover Cyprus A Chance To Explore By Chrissie Flint Now that at last the daytime temperatures are lower, it is the perfect opportunity to get out and about in your spare time and explore. And what better way than with a copy of Village Route 3 ‘Red Earth and Windmills’ tucked in your pocket. The ethos of the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI), the organisation that publishes these books, is to provide those who enjoy ‘getting off the beaten track’ with comprehensive information about villages, monuments, the flora and the faun, and, importantly, where to see traditional handicrafts being made and where to enjoy a good meal. The CSTI consists of people working in the travel industry to meet the challenges of an increasing number of tourists and residents who want to really get to know Cyprus. The benefit of this is that more visitors to the villages will bring a renaissance to rural communities as trade is increased in restaurants and craft workshops, which will help to
protect both, for future generations to enjoy. Red Earth and Windmills focuses on the Free Famagusta District, the southern part of the district which has not been occupied since the 1974 Turkish invasion. The booklet explores the area that is nicknamed ‘kokkinochoria’, meaning ‘red villages’, because the soil in this area is a deep red colour and extremely fertile. The most famous product grown in this area is the Cyprus potato, which is still much sought after in UK supermarkets. To irrigate the soil, hundreds of windmills are used to drive the pumps and they give the countryside a very distinctive character. The circular route begins in Potamos Liopetriou (famous for its colourful fishing boats and excellent fish tavernas) and ends in Liopetri the village of the basket makers. The
route covers a distance of 41 kilometres and includes visits to Ayia Thekla, Dherynia and Cape Greco. The bonus is that you can follow it at your own pace, stopping at the points that interest you in particular, while following some of the optional side routes if you have time on your side. Each route is ideal by car or bike as there are clear travel directions and distance indicators. The books give valuable information about the history of the area, its churches and monuments and highlights traditions and products that are unique to the area, as well as village wineries and tavernas. Each village route has a soft back cover so it really is ideal to pop in your pocket as you head off for a great day’s exploration. Discover the Real Cyprus focuses on the village routes of: 1) Central & Western Limassol 2) Orini Larnaca 3) Red Earth & Windmills (the Famagusta District) 4) Troodos, the Green Heart of Cyprus 5) Pitsilia And the 6th route on the Akamas will be published shortly. Each guide is priced €3.00 and is available by mail order from Moufflon Books in Nicosia – 2206515 or e-mail bookshop@moufflon.com or from the CSTI based in Limassol at csticyprus@hotmail.com

Dear Tess by Tracey Stratton
LARNACANEWSAGONYCORNER
Dear Tess I have been living with my partner for 6 years. In all that time i have been the main provider. I pay the mortgage, pay the bills, buy the food and generally keep us both. My partner lost his job about 6 months ago. I appreciate things are difficult in the current climate, but he has made no effort to look for another (full time) job. He sometimes gets casual jobs painting and decorating (he is a builder). Any money he gets from these jobs however he spends on himself. He has two children from a previous relationship who he is taking away for a week end break from money he got from a casual job he did. I am not included in this trip. Am i being selfish in thinking i deserve some help financially, practically and emotionally from this man? LN Reader
Dear Reader In short…no, you are not being selfish. Relationships, or rather the most contented and happy ones, are where support works

on a two-way basis. There are times when one partner might need extra support such as in redundancy, illness or other difficult times. However you say you have been the main provider for the whole of your relationship. It sounds as if you might have played a part in making a 'rod for you own back'. If you have appeared willing to take on the main respobsibility for providing for you both he has truly taken advantage of you. I suggest you tell him how you are feeling and that you are now experiencing feelings of resentment. Ask him how he thinks he can begin to support you so that you are not carrying the weight of this relationship alone. I also suggest you might try couple counselling. If this man is not willing to address his selfish ways you might need to consider whether you can remain in a relationship that doesn't appear to meet your most basic needs. I wish you well. Regards,
Tess
Whether you take my advice or not, it is my opinion on what I would do in similar circumstances. Neither I, nor the Magazine will be held responsible for any repercussions from you taking my advice or not. The final decision has to be yours. Remember, every choice you make has consequences, which can be good or bad - so think very carefully before you act.

Blast From The Past The Love Bug by Sean Dunne
LARNACANEWSMOTORS
This month’s edition of Blast from the Past brings you an in-depth look at what is probably the most loveable movie car ever produced. I’m sure the title gave it away, that’s it folks, you guessed it…Herbie. Most of us remember watching Herbie in the Disney movies from the 1960s when we were kids, hoping that we’d grow up and find ourselves a car that had a mind of its own and could drive itself. OK, let’s be honest, with the technology they are developing today, we have already seen on Top Gear and other motoring shows that the computerised cars we can own will be able to do exactly that in the not-sodistant future, but none of them will have the personality and aura of this old Beetle. Not many movies have made you feel like every car of that model that you see in real life feels like the same one that you saw on TV. I remember when I was around 12 years old and my cousin bought one. I remember thinking that it possessed the same spirit as the number 53 did; that it must have come alive when no one was around, such was the aura surrounding it. This loveable car was modelled on a 1963 Model

117 Deluxe Sunroof Sedan Volkswagen Beetle. I’m sorry to say though that the Volkswagen model is where the similarity, between the production model and the Beetle used to play Herbie in the 60’s movies, ends. The production model in 1963 came with a 4 cylinder, 4-speed manual with only 40 bhp. Take a deep breath if you plan to read the next bit TURN TO PAGE 31

in one go…Herbie was modified to produce an air-cooled, four-cylinder, horizontally opposed FAT Performance 2,332cc race motor that has a 10.5-to-1 compression ratio and twin Weber carbs. The result is a 190-hp engine that runs on 125-octane unleaded racing fuel. Given the car's 1,834-pound weight, it isn't a complete
surprise that the little bug ran 132 mph at California Speedway. Stopping power comes from aluminium calipers with 11-inch front discs and 10-inch rear discs. There is also a quick-release Speedway Motors steering wheel, Deist window net and a full complement of racing gauges. Great to know that there was more to Herbie than just movie magic huh… Throughout most of the franchise, Herbie is distinguished by red, white and blue racing stripes from front to back bumper, a racing-style number "53" on the front trunk lid, doors, and engine lid, and a yellow-on-black '63 California license plate that says, "OFP 857". Including the re-make of Herbie in 2005 called Herbie: Fully Loaded starring Lindsay Lohan, Herbie has been in 6 movies spanning nearly 40 years, making it one of the most iconic cars in movie history and made the VW Beetle, or Love Bug as it’s fondly known, one of the highest selling production cars of all time. Not even my uncle Jimmy, known for his car badmouthing, has a bad word to say about this car, so that says a lot. Find a copy of one of the movies somewhere (Not the one with Lindsay Lohan;it's really bad) and pay homage to Number 53, The Love Bug Herbie…remembered as one of the world’s most loveable and memorable cars. www.larnacanews.com

Introduction To Larnaca Football Clubs SCORE AWAY League Results by George Kasparis HOME ANORTHOSIS We are five games into the new season and despite a few dubious refereeing decisions our Larnaca teams are fairing pretty well in the league. As you can see in the results from the league table below, Anorthosis are leading the way with AEK hot on their tail in third. Anorthosis Famagusta Ermis come in sixth and Alki eigth. If you take into consideration that both AEK and Alki were playing in division 2 last season and Ermis have only been in the first division for 2 years, then they really are storming ahead this season. Well done the Larnaca lads and keep up the good work. Being an avid supporter of the game I AEK have taken a firm interest this year and, Larnaca along with the rest of the Larnaca News team have been to watch various matches. I have to say it's a great way to spend an early saturday evening with the family. The atmosphere is positively buzzing, the drums, the colour, the usual taunting of the ref. We're hooked and have our seats firmly booked. Ermis Aradippou I would like to thank our readers for the Larnaca positive feedback we received about both the footballing articles last month and as a result a few of you have written in with your rundown of the AEK matches. I'm glad that the message is reaching you. Keep going to the matches and don't forget to write in. If you have any questions or just want to let me know about your match Alki experiences then send me an email at Larnaca letters@larnacanews.com.

Spotlight On Larnaca Football Ermis by Alex Andreou Through three difficult years after 1955 the people of Aradippou, who loved football and cared about the development of youngsters in the area, proceeded to establish the Cultural Sports Club, Ermis Aradippou. In 1958, full of hopes and dreams, Ermis was founded and began to play an important role in sports events both local, provincial and island wide. Apart from sporting activities, Ermis Aradippou has also presented a series of educational and cultural activities to the community. When Ermis tried to join the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) their original application was rejected, whilst local rival team Omonia Aradippou was accepted, because under the laws of the CFA a team could only join if it was part of a community larger than three thousand people. In 1970 the management took its own initiative to record and present the facts of the people of Aradippou and finally became a member of the CFA in the 1972-1973 season, playing in the 3rd Division (Division C). During 1974, Ermis participated in the mixed league and in 1975-1976 was promoted to Division B. Within a decade the club had developed into a rich footballing community and its academies helped mould a multitude of young players. The number of these players, who came from the heart of Ermis, showed the depth of infrastructure at the club, and the enormous amount of work carried out by the Board of the Association. Ermis’ participation in the CFA has been of mixed success, with achievements including promotion to the First Division three times. Most recently in 2008-09 Ermis were promoted from Division B and performed admirably in the First Division during the 2009-2010 season, managing to stay up for the first time in the history of the club. This recent success has been due to the financial strength, enthusiasm and commitment of the current president and tireless board members. Ermis’ future plans include the building of a new stadium and training complex for the club and their acadamies. The biggest successes of the club and its proudest achievements have come from its youths over the past 50 years, with significant results in the various leagues of VUR. Today, Ermis can count more than one hundred and fifty young players, showing the depth of structure of the association. Ermis will be playing their home games for the next three years at Salamina’s Stadium, known as the Stadium Rafael Group Ammochostos, which is situated adjacent to the African Safari roundabout. For those of you who played the first Mass Effect game, expect more from this action RPG game out on the PC, XBOX 360, and soon to be released on the PS3 as well. This year’s game releases haven’t had too many titles that you just can’t put down. Mass Effect 2 however, is definitely a game you can play all day, all night, and then all day again. It’s action packed and requires a relative amount of skill to win on any difficulty levels above the default. There are also awards available for achieving certain goals in the game so that you can compare and boast with your friends about who is better at the game. The game starts you off with a scene involving an attack on the main protagonist, Shepard, and his ship, the Normandy. The ship is shredded by the damage it takes and the fate of your character is temporarily unclear. Fortunately Shepard survives, in a loose sense of the word, and your quest begins. There are many diverse, rich characters that really bring the game to life and show the different traits of different races all over the universe. Their cooperation depends on you and your decisions in the game and www.larnacanews.com
especially in dialogue. You’ll reap the rewards from making them “loyal” members of your team. The action is intense with a great soundtrack intensifying the atmosphere at the correct moments and brilliant sound effects so you really feel like you’ve just snipered one of your enemies. The gunfights are fast paced and it pays to choose your weapons carefully for the right situation. You also get to choose from a selection of classes, some more suited to biotic powers (like magic) and some suited more to close combat, and others to long range and sneaking around. There are so many choices, you could play through more than once and have a completely different experience with the way you play the game each time.
The graphics are better than the first game and at some points in the game, such as in the city of Ilium, the vistas are stunningly beautiful and make you wish for the world to look that way today. Definitely one of the best RPGs of the year and currently available for less than €20 online!

History of The Month October by Alex Andreou
I suppose parents have been asking their children how school has been and what they’ve been doing in class, every day for a month now. And you’re all probably tired of hearing the usual response of ‘fine’ and ‘nothing’. I know I am. They can’t possibly do ‘nothing’ all day. The only time they answer properly is when they play football or some kid does something gross in the playground. For those of you as bored as I am of those oh so informative answers from our little ones, here is some interesting info about the history of October. Many of you will remember the Beatles’ fantastic years of music. Well on the 5th October 1962 they released their first single, “Love Me Do”, which reached
www.larnacanews.com
LARNACANEWSFEATURE
number seventeen in the UK charts, but was a number one hit in the US charts in 1964. A good achievement considering they changed drummer for this song alone, three times. On 6th June 1962 “Love Me Do” was first recorded with Pete Best on the drums. He was then replaced with Ringo Starr who performed during the 4th September recording. Only a week later, the under rehearsed Ringo Starr was replaced by session drummer Andy White for the third recording. It’s said that by the end of it, they were all sick of the song and weren’t sure whether it would be a success; not a surprise really… On 17th October 1931 infamous gangster Al Capone was finally convicted for…wait for it…income tax evasion. That’s correct; despite his underworld dealings and running everything from breweries and gambling houses to brothels and horse race tracks, he was finally convicted for a term of 10 years in federal prison and one year in county jail for income tax evasion. He served his sentence, but was transferred to
Alcatraz after he took control of his Atalanta prison, receiving special privileges such as a typewriter, rugs, a mirror, etc. Interestingly enough, the series of “The Untouchables” was released on 15th October 1959 covering everything about the prohibition era and the battle against organised crime in 1930s Chicago that included Al Capone. And with the start of the Premier League, you can be on the ball (forgive the pun) with this piece of football trivia. On October 1st 1977, football’s favourite son, Pele, retired with an astounding record of 1281 goals in 1363 games. His startling career began at Santos in Brazil, where at the age of 15 he came off the bench to score the sixth goal in a 7-1 win against Corinthians of Sante Andre; a legend was born.

FROM PAGE 17 empowers you to use the provisions of the Land Law Specific Performance Law Cap 232, where if a vendor fails or neglects to carry out all necessary processes to issue separate deeds to the property being sold and to transfer deeds to you, you can elect to go to court and get a court order forcing the vendor to abide by his contractual and legal obligations. Note however that if you do not file your contract you will not be entitled to become registered title deed holder of the property. If a fraud has been perpetrated upon you, say for example where facts relevant to a property were not revealed to you or were concealed and you parted with money relying on the silence or the representations of the vendor then you have a right of action for fraud in a civil case and you should file an official complaint with the police. In Mr & Mrs Hudson’s case you state that the bank is going to repossess the property no doubt due to a default of the vendor to settle his outstanding debt to the bank. If deeds were available for the property then one wonders why Mr & Mrs Hudson did not demand that those deeds be transferred to them? One visit to the land registry with a copy of their contract would have revealed to them that the property was mortgaged before their purchase and thus the bank had first right over it. I wish I could do something to rid Cyprus of corruption. The fact of the matter is this: To protect yourself as far as possible, don't enter into a deal or agreement with anyone who seems less than forthright. Get objective opinions on matters that concern you. Don't compromise your investment or retirement just because you have seen a 'dream home'; what may seem fine on the outside may be riddled with problems. Be alert and do not commit to any transaction without doing your research beforehand. Cyprus is not full of crooks as you may believe, but you must deal with independent reputable, professional and ethical persons. Do not lose your faith; not all of the apples are bad. LARNACANEWSLETTERS
Have Your Say by The Editor Dear Stelios, I was horrified to see an elderly couple, Ken and Mary Hudson, threatened with eviction recently because the person who sold them their flat had a mortgage on their land, which he had defaulted on. Therefore not only did this couple not get their Title Deeds showing ownership, but the bank decided to repossess the flat and auction it off, even though the couple had paid for the flat and the Title Deeds in full. This is disgraceful and so unjust, and with 30,000 other people in a similar position, I believe it may be just the tip of the iceberg. Stelios, you are a lawyer. What can be done now/quickly to avoid this tragedy befalling anyone else? WHY aren't these crooks who are defrauding people by taking their money for properties, and not giving them ownership, taken to court and made to pay up, give up their own house in compensation, or put in jail? Having read the blogs following on from this story, I was even more amazed to read that corruption is rife in Cyprus and no one seems to be able to do anything about it. Have you a solution please? Sincerely, Lesley Eve Larnaca Dear Lesley, Your question has been put to Stelios and you can find your answer on page 17. Regards, The Editor Dear Editor, I must say, I do love to read the Larnaca News although it seems to be getting more and more difficult obtaining a www.larnacanews.com
copy and I am now having to read it online which is not my preference. I have checked your distribution list online and wish to advise that this is now out of date or several of the outlets no longer have the publication, Kleima is a prime example as I have been asking them for the past year! Could you let me know which outlets definitely have copies which I can pick up please? Regards Chris Goff (Mr) Hi Chris, Thank you for your email. We are always pleased to hear that our readers look forward to picking up a copy of the Larnaca News. Unfortunately, the downside to being a popular magazine is that as soon as it hits our stands, it flies out. Be quick and look out for it from the Second Friday of each Month. We still deliver a substantial amount to Kleima. However, Kleima choose to distribute magazines to their customers in shopping bags, as opposed to leaving them for pick up which may explain why you are having trouble getting a copy. Our website which by the way is in the middle of a complete overhaul has now been updated, however, to be sure our main distributors are still Carrefour Larnaca & Kiti, Elomas stores, Metro, Hobos, Starbucks, Ikia Homes, Cyprus Life, Discount 10 and Athanasiou Supermarket Oroklini, Kybele Cafe Mackenzie, Computer Central, Cessac, UKCA Club Dhekelia and Omiros Kios Kiti to name but a few. You are also always welcome to pick up a copy from our office: M02, Oroklini Shopping Centre, Griva Digeni 4, Oroklini.
The good news is that the Larnaca News will soon be available to order on a subscription basis for all of you who would prefer to have the Larnaca News delivered to you personally each month. Simply fill out the form in this month's issue or look out for our online subscription form. Regards, The Editor Dear Editor I agree with Bill’s comments from previous issues regarding the Greek Alphabet number plates; why? As he said, motorbikes hardly ever have a number plate, and the driver hardly ever wears a crash helmet, and might wear a pad protecting only one elbow, so why try and get them to have a number plate regardless of it being in Greek or English. Also, how come now you can no longer display your tax disc & MOT disc in the windscreen of your vehicle and it’s ok? Again, this is simply Cyprus wanting to do something totally different to everyone else. It's beyond me sometimes it really is! Regads, Chris

Astronomy World Space Week by George Troullias
is unprecedented. The theme for World Space Week 2010 is "Mysteries of the Cosmos". Throughout history, humans have looked to the heavens and wondered about the universe and our place within it. Today, we are learning much about our universe, but with each answer come more questions. Not only do the questions deal with the nature of the galaxies and stars, but the nature of life itself. This year, World Space Week is a time to probe what we know, what it means, and what we have yet to learn about the mysteries of the cosmos. In Cyprus, the KITION PLANETARIUM & OBSERVATORY is the National coordinator. Join us during the week of October 4-10 2010 for this amazing celebration of learning. Come and have fun with us, be awed at the splendour of the universe and have your questions answered. For more information about our planned events, please feel free to contact us. World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. It was declared by The United Nations General Assembly in 1999 that World Space Week will be held each year from October 4-10. These dates commemorate two events: 1. October 4, 1957 – The launch of the first humanmade Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, thus opening the way for space exploration. 2. October 10, 1967 – The signing of the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies. World Space Week is the largest public space event on earth. It is celebrated in over 55 nations every year and is open for all to participate in the many events scheduled, for fun and education, in the celebration of space. This week is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of World Space Week Association and local coordinators in many countries. During World Space Week people from around the world are educated about the benefits they receive from space. Children are excited to learn about space and the future. World Space Week encourages greater use of space for sustainable economic development and demonstrates public support for space programs. It also promotes institutions around the world that are involved in space and fosters international cooperation in space outreach and education programmes. The unity of all the participating countries during World Space Week has a great impact on all humanity, and the global cooperation in space that is demonstrated

FASCINATING FACTS ►The can opener was invented 48 years after the can ►Traffic lights were invented before automobiles ►The British royal family changed their surname from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor in 1917.
JOKE Back in the old Wild West, two blonde cowpokes, John and James, walked into a saloon to have a drink. After a while a man walked in with an Indian's head under his arm and went straight to the bar. The barman looked at him and said, "I hate Indians too. Last week they ransacked my home, stole all my belongings and killed my dogs and horse. In fact anyone who brings me an Indian's head will receive $1000." The two cowpokes looked at each other and John said, "Come on, let's go get us an Indian's head." They headed away from town and finally saw an Indian. John threw a stone he had picked up off the ground. The stone hit the Indian in the forehead and he fell off his horse...into a 70 foot ravine. James ran after him and said, "Don't worry, I'll get our trophy." As he made his way down the ravine, John shouted at him. "James, take a look at this." "Not now," James replied. "But it's important," John continued, a note of worry in his voice. "Can't you see i'm trying to get us some money here," James shouted back. "But it's reaaallllly important. Just look!" Hysteria was plain in his voice. James turned to look at John and saw that on the edge of the ravine sat 5000 angry Indians on horses, arrows ready and waiting to fire. His jaw dropped and he just stared. "OH..........MY.........GOD..........We're going to be millionaires!!!"
