THESIS
FLUSHING CORONA PARK THE AIM OF MY THESIS IS TO DEVELOP A VIBRANT AND GREEN LANDSCAPE IN FLUSHING CORONA PARK. THE NEW PROGRAMMATIC MATRIX FOR THE PARK COMBINES ACTIVITIES AND LANDSCAPE. NEW MULTY-USE FACILITIES WILL BE BUILT THROUGHOUT THE PARK, IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE A MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY. THE PROGRAM IS SUBDIVIDED INTO CULTURAL FACILITIES, PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES, NATURAL FACILITIES AND UTILITIES. THE MAIN FOCUS FOR THE FLUSHING CORONA PARK REVITALIZATION IS A CULTURAL ART CENTER WHICH WILL CREATE A SPACE WHERE PEOPLE COME TOGETHER TO SHARE THEIR IDEAS, TALK, SING, PAINT, DANCE AND ENHANCE THEIR SOCIAL AND CULTURAL LIFE. AT THE FINAL STAGE, THE MEADOW LAKE WILL BE ECOLOGICALLY RESTORED AND ITS NATURAL HABITATS WILL BE DRAMATICALLY EXPANDED USING VARIOUS NATURAL FILTRATION METHODS INCLUDING WETLAND POOLS, AGRICULTURAL FIELDS, VEGETABLE GARDENS, PASTURES, FRESH WATER HABITATS, RESERVOIRS, WATER FILTRATION SWALES AND SOIL BUFFERS IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE THE WATER POLLUTION. THE WATER INFILTRATION RATE OF THE EXISTING SOIL IS ALSO CRITICAL, NOT ONLY TO NATURAL FILTRATION PROCESSES BUT ALSO TO COUNTER FLOODING IN CERTAIN AREAS OF FLUSHING CORONA PARK.
QUEENS, NEW YORK CITY
FLUSHING CORONA PARK 50
CORONA PARK IS LOCATED IN THE DENSE, VIBRANT AND SOCIOECONOMICALLY AREA IN FLUSHING, QUEENS, NEW YORK. THIS 1255-ACRE PARK HAS HISTORICAL, RECREATIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SIGNIFICANCE. BEFORE THE PARK, THE AREA WAS KNOWN AS A "VALLEY OF ASHES" AS MENTIONED IN THE MOVIE, "THE GREAT GATSBY." THE PARK HAS BECOME QUEENS' LARGEST PARK, AND ONE OF NEW YORK CITY'S FLAGSHIP PARKS.

IN 1964, CORONA PARK WAS FAMOUS FOR NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR NEW YORK STATE PAVILION DESIGNED BY FAMED MODERNIST ARCHITECT PHILIP JOHNSON. THE FAIR IS BEST REMEMBERED AS A MID-20TH CENTURY AMERICAN CULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY EPICENTER. THE PROMISING SPACE AGE WAS WELL REPRESENTED IN THE PARK. MORE THAN 50 MILLION PEOPLE ATTENDED THE FAIR. IT REMAINS A BENCHMARK FOR BABY BOOMERS OF NEW YORK CITY, WHO VISITED THE OPTIMISTIC FAIR AS CHILDREN BEFORE THE HARD TIMES DURING THE VIETNAM WAR AND THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. IN MANY WAYS THE FAIR SYMBOLIZED A GRAND CONSUMER SHOW COVERING MANY PRODUCTS PRODUCED IN AMERICA AT THE TIME FOR TRANSPORTATION, LIVING, AND CONSUMER ELECTRONIC ESSENTIALS.

NOISE: ROAD NOISE IS CERTAINLY EASIER TO BUFFER USING TREE PLANTINGS, BERMS, FENCES, TRELLISES, WALLS, LIVING WALLS, ETC. BIODIVERSITY : CHOOSING PLANT SPECIES TO OPTIMIZE FOR BIODIVERSITY WOULD IMPROVE THE SITE. NUTRIENTS: WATER - TO GENERALLY IMPROVE WATER QUALITY AND REMOVE UNWANTED NUTRIENTS FROM STORM WATER. MOST OF THE SITE ADJACENT TO THE LAKES CONSISTS OF LAYER OF ASH FILL OF VARYING THICKNESS WITH A THIN COVERING OF TOPSOIL.

EVERY YEAR, TAIWAN RECEIVES AN AVERAGE RAINFALL OF MORE THAN THE ANNUAL PRECIPITATION OF THE UNITED STATES, INDIA, AND AUSTRALIA COMBINED. MORE THAN 50% OF THE RAINFALL IS LOST, PRIMARILY BECAUSE OF TAIWAN'S STEEP GEOGRAPHY, TROPICAL CLIMATE, AND WIDESPREAD URBANIZATION IN THE LOWER ELEVATION AREAS. AQUA CULTURES IS A LIVING FILTER FOR WATER AND AIR THAT CATALYZES A HEALTHY RANGE OF URBAN PROGRAMS. RECREATIONAL AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES OCCUR WITHIN, ATOP, AND BESIDE THE POOLS OF WATER, FLOATING LANTERNS FLICKERING IN THE NIGHT, KAYAKING AND CANOEING ON WARM SUMMER AFTERNOONS, CHILDREN LAUGHING AS THEY WATCH FOR FISH IN THE DENSE REEDS, AND SECLUDED MOMENTS OF QUIET REFLECTION NEXT TO THE GURGLING WATERS.

SHIFTING FIELDS
ACTIVE ACTIVE CITY CITY TRANSFORMATION TRANSFORMATION
ACTIVE CITY TRANSFORMATION (ACT) RECENTLY DESIGNED A PUBLIC SPACE USING FLOODING AS A PRODUCTIVE PHENOMENON, BOTH AS AN ACTIVE AND ATTRACTIVE ELEMENT. THE INTENT OF SHIFTING FIELDS IS TO CREATE A MORE EXPERIENCE-RICH SITE, WHICH UNDERLINES THE RELATIONSHIPS TO THE ADJACENT FUNCTIONS AND CHARACTERISTICS. THE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE FIELDS IS ORGANIZED IN VARIOUS LEVELS IN RELATION TO THE CANAL TO CONTROL THE FLUCTUATING WATER LEVEL. EACH FIELD CAN BE THOUGHT OF AS A SMALL POCKET THAT CAN GRADUALLY BE FILLED WITH WATER. THUS THE LANDSCAPE TRANSITIONS INTO A WATER PLAYGROUND WITH SWIMMING POOLS, REFLECTING POOLS, ETC.

VALPARAISO CULTURAL PARK
EMILIO MARIN
THE MORPHOLOGY OF VALPARAISO IS DECONTEXTUALIZED AS GEOMETRY THAT CREATES A SUCCESSION OF ARTICULATED BY EMPTY SPACES. THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THESE ARE FILTERED THROUGH SPACE NOT BUILT, THESE GAPS ARE GREEN COURTYARDS, SMALL OUTDOOR AREAS INDEPENDENT AND OPPOSED TO THE VAST PLAZA THAT SEPARATES HIM FROM PRISON. WHILE THE SQUARE IS A LARGE PUBLIC SPACE FOR MASSIVE EVENTS, PATIOS ALLOW INHERENT CULTURAL EVENTS PROMOTING THE BUILDING PROGRAM IN A MORE INTIMATE AND CONTAINED. SMALL GAPS ARE TRANSFORMED INTO OUTDOOR PROJECTION INTERNAL PROGRAM. THE GALLERY BUILDING OF THE FORMER PRISON IN TURN BECOMES A PLACE OF CULTURAL EXPANSION, A DUALITY WHICH AGAIN RE OPPOSITION MEAN THE OLD BUILDING. THE GALLERY OF THE FORMER PRISON, IS ALSO REACTIVATED WITHIN A STAGE FOR MORE INFORMAL EVENTS, AND FINALLY THE GRAND STAIRCASE ACCESS, BECOMES A FLIGHT OF STEPS TO THE SPONTANEOUS EVENTS OF ARTISTIC CREATION.
