Part 01 – The project Why are we here?
03
A little while ago, having completed work on the identity refresh project, we were asked by Leeds College of Art to think about how we might bring some life to the building walls. Pretty soon we identified that plastering the identity visuals on the wall wouldn’t be the best way to go so we started thinking of ideas as though the brief was almost a blank sheet of paper – we were starting again from scratch. It was liberating! With what we knew about LCA we defined some themes about the place and that led the thinking – it was the catalyst. Those themes were things like: Re-interpreting a mosaic What is a mosaic really? It’s a big image made of small disparate broken bits. So that thinking led the work in the canteen.

PART 02 THE BRIEF WHAT ARE YOU DESIGNING? Peter and Paul

Part 02 – The brief What are you designing? This is your building. You live here. So we want you to create something for the space that’s yours. This is your chance to become part of the fabric of the building and have a legacy even after you’ve left! Your brief is to design a piece of semi permanent artwork to live in two spaces in the Graphic Design department. Your piece can be anything so long as it lives on these walls. Anything goes: Illustration, typography, photography, installation, whatever but there are some important things to bear in mind: • This has to be something that you and your course mates want to look at every day – so it has to have some aesthetic value • It has to be practical – something we can feasibly produce for a moderate budget • It should communicate an idea. When we were tasked with the same brief we found it helpful to devise some themes against which to work. You can do that too if you think it will help you come up with ideas but it’s not imperative. The competition process: We will see all your submissions on Friday the 9th January and then select 3 or 4 people or groups to pursue their ideas to a second stage proposal. Once we’ve seen how that second stage has developed we’ll then select one person or group to make their ideas real on the walls! We’ll then be there to guide with the process of making the work and installing it.

Wall B — The blank wall outside the third year studio. Your design can expand on to the window space here too.

Part 03 – The Team Who has the final say? It’s best to imagine the ‘project community’ like you’re working at Peter and Paul to design a solution for Leeds College of Art. LCA’s management and marketing teams are our client, it’s our job to create something that we’re happy with creatively and that satisfies their need to present the college in the right way to future students and their parents.
YOU Your work will be judged and directed by

PART 04 DELIVERABLES WHAT DO WE WANT TO SEE? Peter and Paul

Leeds College of Art – Graphic Design Interior
Part 04 – Deliverables What do we want to see? On the 9th January we want to see an A3 printed 5 page first stage proposal about your idea. On those pages should be: Page 01 Your name and an outline of your idea in no more than 100 words. This is your opening statement and the introduction to everything we’re going to see on the next 4 pages. It should leave us wanting to see more! Pages 02 and 03 Any moodboard images that support your thinking and rough sketch work. This work can be done digitally or by hand. Page 04 Your artwork proposal in 2D, flat and sized proportionally to the size of the wall. This is our chance to scrutinise the design and see if it works as a flat piece of artwork. Page 05 Your design photoshopped onto images of the wall space. The photographs should be retaken by you and be hires – the ones in this brief are not high enough quality. This is where we can see how it will work in reality and it will give us a better idea of scale and size. You will have 10 minutes to talk through your proposal and we will ask questions for a further 2 – 3 minutes if required. We will aslo require these presentations as a PDF on memory stick or CD to take away.
Your creative submission stage 01 Deadline: Friday 9th January • 5 x A3 pages • 10 minute presentation • 2–3 minutes question and answer if required. • A PDF of your presentation on a memory stick or CD for leave behind
