THE CONVERSATION

ALEX EARPS

Contents Page Page 1 - 10 : All types of Conversation

In this first part of the research document, I will be taking a look at all different types of conversation and how they can be used in different circumstances. And then once done I will ask my own question and show how I built up to develop my final peice.

What is Conversation ? Conversation can be anything you choose it to be, from forcing your own opinion across, to happily lying back and helping someone with there troubles. As a human race we rely on conversation to get us through are everyday life. For this project we’ve been told that we need to give are own opinion on conversation and for me I would like to go down a very political route. However I want to start by covering different basis’s for this, by researching artists, directors and music.

Perspectives Perspectives is a online website which talks about a matter of subjects, however there was one post that stood out to me, which was an article called, how the military and the goverment use social media to spread there version of truth. It really interested me because they are now using 21st Century language such as Twitter and Facebook. They post things such as memes to get in touch with the younger generation and promote the goverment as cool. This is a perfect example of 21st century conversation.

Political Films

Politcal Cartoons Politcal Cartoons are one of the oldest form of cummincation in the masses and they were commonly used through the war to raise moral and cast a shadow over how bad the war actually was. There were magazines such as PUNCH, which were very popular back in the war. Now days theyre arent as many or as popular but theyre are still loads if you can look for it. Cagle is a big one and they have a good variety.

The Cagle The Cagle is a 21st century website that promotes different artists and they’re own political cartoons. I find this site very intersting because in this day and age political cartoons are more important than ever. With whats going on these cartoons are more invaluable than ever to reach out to modern day soicety and the youth of today. The point im trying to make is that artists have a way of communicating with masses and the goverment without words. The website and magazine was set up by a man called daryl cagle.

Daryl Cagle Daryl Cagle is the owner of the the cagle post and is also a incredibly talented political cartoonist, He started working for the muppets and thats where he realised his talent for drawing. He looks at the current politcal crisis plaguing america. I wanted to use him as inspiration because of his link to this sort of communication.

Political Art

British Conversation Some people say that the british are known for the anti- social behaviour so for the first part of this project. I went down to town and I spoke to a few of the locals about how they feel. The question I asked was “ are the british public as anti social as everyone thinks we are? The responses I got were quite interesting, some were very pro anti social.

“ I don’t care, They can P** off.” “ I think we need to do more to change it” I’m fairly happy being Anti-Social”

American Conversation On the other side of the conversation I went to town to ask the question what do english people think off the american dialect. A lot of the answers I came back with I wont include because they may cause offence. But a lot of them were very open and I thank the residents of Huddersfield for them.

“Americans I feel are like are cousins” “Bit to Bigheaded for me” “ A lot nicer than the us lot”

Technology and Anti social Behaviour In this page I will be looking at the research I will need for my final peice on ani social behaviour through technology and how a advertisement campaign can prevent it. I will start it by adding a link to a powerpoint on technology influencing ani social behaviour in society by Katelyn MacEachern. The presentation goes on to say that even though we are more connected through technology it is drawing us further apart from the actual truth that is we rely to heavily on technology. And we have forgotten how to communciate with each other through verbal means.

Anti-Social For this project I have decided to look the idea of how conversation changes in different social situations, and how when certain aspects to the night are bought into play they can either be a sucess or completely crumble the conversation. Many different types of research have been conducted and its actualy becoming more offensive to have your phone out in public. Now more commenly tv is becoming a major fault in peoples lives.

Anti- Social Media Project The anti social Media Project is a installation where random people can come and scan in theyre own work through the keybaord. They are using the idea of how social media has made everyone a lot more isolated in there own thoughts so in order to promote creativity they have set up this Exhibit. The exhibit is being currated by Jack Ratcliffe.

New Antisocial New Anti- Social are a graphics company based in Brooklyn, They focus on spreading graphic design through social media, However they also take a wide variety of clients requests. There motto is Get out there and Get weird. Which I like. It defies every aspect of being anti social, They have worked for large companies such as Nike and Reebok

Research I went in to the town to speak to the local population about what the difference types of conversation are, and how in different scenarios they’re attitude changes such as nights out. The feedback that I got were mostly between the ages of 40-50 or 18 - 20 and theyre different answers actually connected with there own age groups and I wasnt suprised with how many 40-50 preffered not socialising above actually socilasing.

Idea 1 My first idea for this project was to develop a few political cartoons to show how the world has completely changed and how politcal cartoons would be a lot more serious now than they were. I was going to look at the idea of syria and whats happening there. I end up producing 3 cartoons on pen and paper just to see what they would look like.

Idea 2 My 2nd idea revolved around the idea of conversation in general and how society has evolved to either highten or lower theyre need for conversation depending on the situation. For me I wanted to look at different situations in which conversation is built. and how the old you get you dont feel the need to converse as much when life gets more comfortable.

In order to develop a good solid development I decided to make a lot of different illustrator files for most images I was planning to use for my final peice. These are the first tests for a few images that were made in Illustrator.
