Out of Failure - Space: Roll

space : roll

Out of Failure Space : Roll began as a reaction to disaster, not just natural, but also political and social. We started by focusing on the events following hurricane Katrina. The category 5 hurricane was one of the deadliest and most destructive in US history, affecting more than 15 million people. In it’s path were destroyed homes, government buildings, and entire communities. With nothing remaining, many were forced to relocate or move to FEMA trailers. As with most situations, there was gap of time in which families were left in limbo, living in an overcrowded Superdome while they waited for trailers or were able to move in with relatives. From this failure in organization and response time, we found an opportunity to create something that could be flat packed, driven to any site, and easily assembled by a few people. In creating an enclosure that rolls to create multiple interiors, we are able to maximize the habitats programmatic uses and capitalize on efficiency of space. With the recent coming of Superstorm Sandy and the destruction it’s left, we’ve come upon another situation in which Space : Roll becomes necessary. In New York City, Staten Island, and New Jersey where homes were flooded and destroyed, Space : Roll could easily be distributed and assembled to sit in Battery Park, on the Jersey Shore, or in abandoned lots, creating temporary housing for thousands of displaced families in need.

Areas hit badly in New Jersey have population that is 23% over age 65, twice the national average. Home values in the area are 2 to 3 times the national average, 60-70 percent owner occupied

20% of those affected already lived in poverty 54% of households in poverty did not have access to a vehicle

New York county has extremely diverse population ethnically People from all ethnicities and economic classes were affected by the storm. 18% homes owner occupied in New York County

shelter : conditions Small Families shelter designed to accommodate up to two adults and two children, built to accommodate those in poverty

Restrooms external restrooms are assumed to be provided via a communal space or disaster relief center in close proximity, higher level of sanitation needed in communal restrooms

Food and Water drinking water and food sustenance are assumed to be available externally, from a disaster relief center or a relief organization, shelter not designed to prepare food

shelter : intentions Shelter provide comfortable and private sleeping space shelter from the elements provide private space to dress and undress

Seating provide comfortable seating for relaxation, workspace for users, and space in which to share meals

Storage provide space for treasured family items brought with the users and provide space for clothing and blankets

shelter : inspirations The International Space Station The International Space Station’s capsules put all of the sur faces in each space to use. The lack of gravity in the space enables the programmatic elements of the space to wrap 360 degrees around the capsule. Space: Roll uses this idea in a new way in order to maximize the programmatic use of its space while dealing with gravitational limitations that the ISS does not have to cope with.

Japanese Capsule Hotel The Capsule Hotels deal with a small space that serves the very specific purpose of providing a place to sleep. All other programmatic elements are external, such as restrooms and food preparation. In the same way, not all programmatic elements necessary for survival are present in Space: Roll, but are assumed to be external in order to maximize efficiency of space and sanitation.

The minimalization of unique members and the utilization of narrow spans in compression allow for less material to be used in the fabrication of each unit. Less material lowers the cost of each shelter and makes them easier to ship. Excess interior negative spaces from the frame cut outs are able to be arrayed with furniture objects and additional bracing to furnish the relief shelters.
