Glass Paddle Art Auction App for an Art Gallery Google UX Design Specialty Certificate Project UX Researcher | UX Designer

01 Project Prompt Sharpen.design This was a randomly generated project made for the Google UX Design Specialty Certificate. 02 User Research Online Foundational Research General online research was done to see what currently exists in the world of art auction apps & websites, their pain points, and their user base. Google Forms Survey Gathering Insight: 20 LinkedIn & Facebook community survey responses on users’ experiences with auctions, buying artwork, and points of interest / concern with app based purchasing. Zoom User Interviews 3 In-depth user interviews to gain an understanding of how best to build an art auction app to serve real users needs. Miro Board Theme Identification The insights from the Google Survey and interviews were collected and analyzed using affinity mapping in Miro Board. Common themes to address in the design stage were identified.

Users are used to cleaner mobile app interfaces, and had issues completing tasks on text & image heavy pages.

Many users prefer to Sign Up by linking to existing social media accounts (e.g. Google / Gmail & Facebook accounts).

Most users wanted to browse the art before committing to completing an extensive sign up or user profile process.

EXTRUDE SITE

REQUIRED RELIEF

ADDITIONAL RELIEF

INTERNAL SCOOPS

The site is extruded to provide maximum density within the Northgate Transit Overlay Area.

The adjacent LR3 residential zone requires a 10' minimum setback. If the minimum setback were used, all exceptional trees would require removal.

Adding an additional 17' setback at the north saves mature trees from removal. A 15' setback at the south accommodates a pathway connector and landscaping. The retail frontage pulls back for relief from vehicular street.

Massing is removed from the south to create two courtyards with solar exposure and open space that connects with pathway along south property.

More housing is required, as the city faces an extreme housing shortage.

This allows access to light & air from internal apartment units.

MASSING RELIEF

PUBLIC OPEN SPACE

COMMERCIAL CHARACTER

PROPOSED MASSING

Massing is further reduced by simple vertical carve-outs placed primarily along the outward facing long facades.

Public open space is thoughtfully placed at the Northeast corner. The space is primarily covered to provide weather protection to the public.

The ground level is setback 8'10' from the Roosevelt property line to provide commercial live/ work spaces with landscape buffers. Lots of glazing will be utilized to encourage interaction and engagement along the street.

The design is centered on placement of open spaces to provide connection at the ground level and visual relief at the massing above. provide the safest environment for the the project and the community

This provides variety and visual relief along the street.

16

The project consists of 492 residential apartment units together with ancillary uses and 12,000 square feet of commercial/retail space. The residential units are contained in (2) podium style buildings and (21) three story urban ‘quad’ style walk-up buildings. This creates mixed density on a former public golf course. The podium buildings have four levels of wood frame residential construction over 2 concrete podium levels. Approximately 6,000 SF of commercial/retail space and structured parking is contained in the lower 2 levels. A central plaza facing between Meeker Street and the podium buildings leads to a planted promenade through the site, passing urban walk up buildings en route to the Green River and bicycle trail. The urban style walk-up buildings are located closer to the river, their small scale minimizing impact on the existing natural character of the site along the river’s edge and pedestrian-bicycle pathway. The overall site plan also contains surface parking stalls and garage/carports.

At A Glance Mixed-Use Multifamily Residential • 91 Apartment Units • 3,100 Sq. Ft. Retail • Amenity Plaza • Partial Green Roof • Structured Parking • Surface Parking • Leasing Offices • Fitness Center • Amenity Game Room & Lounge • LEED Gold Sustainability Rating

20

The Village at Westgate is a mixed-use development that features 91 residential units, 3,100 square feet of retail, and a public/private outdoor amenity space located at the intersection of Edmonds Way and 100th Ave. It is the first new Mixed Use development in the newly created Westgate District, reflecting the City’s desire to create a walkable center in the area. The contemporary modern project features a sleek palette of black steel and wood grain accents, intentionally detailed concrete, and natural colors to gracefully wrap along a steep wooded protected slope. Additionally, it elegantly incorporates a variety of outdoor landscaping and seating, forming an outdoor public park area and an intimate green roof patio space. The project provides interior amenities including lounge areas, game rooms, and on-site fitness. The amenity spaces are clean and modern; balancing textured and light neutral materials with dark accents. The interiors display cork and plywood accent wall panels, white tile, marble, and neutral grained plank flooring. Rope, laser cut wood, indoor plants, and blackened steel provide contrasting accents.

Layered Concepts

Connections To The Past This project is located near the Fort Ancient Archaeological Park in Southern Ohio. This area is home to Hopewell Native American ceremonial mounds and artifacts. The intended program of the project is to create an archaeological center, a museum, and a lodge to connect visitors to the area’s rich history.

Weaving Into The Present This Archaeological Center responds to the surrounding conditions of the site. The form is generated by pulling from the historical and physical context of the surroundings. It responds to the archaeological history of the area, the dynamic circulation of the site, and dichotomy of natural and man made structures and paths.

These ancient structures were in part reconstructed by evidence left behind, such as post hole spacing or arrangement, as they naturally decomposed years ago.

Dynamic Circulation

Woven Form

Constructing The Future By examining the archaeological remains and study of ancient structure, the structure will be created to allow for the future study of the center’s history and structure. The encouragement of natural decay of structure and projection of what remains after will play an important role in constructing the architecture. This will allow both material studies and experiments in archaeological reconstruction for future visitors.

Natural Decay

Reflecting and connecting to natural and man made paths along the site. It is situated to align parallel to existing site circulation and the river.

Adopting woven building practices of the Hopewell Native Americans and adapting it to create a contemporary structural system.

Integration of the natural world into the build environment and the encouragement of growth and decay of systems over time

A clear connection is made to external waterways, natural trails, roadways, train tracks, and bike paths while developing a central circulation based spine for the interior architecture. The building itself appears to have movement, in the patterning and repetition of small frame pieces, to the offset large stone and rammed earth structural walls.

Weaving the form through a frame based tectonic aesthetic and structural system and connecting the structure into the landscape.

The building of long lasting and temporary structures, and the merging of earth and plant life into the building, encouraging natural growth and decay over time.

The new building uses many natural materials including rammed earth, heavy timber, and stone in a modern context to create the structure.

Specific portions of the new building will be encouraged to be taken over by nature, whether through decay or the hosting of plant life. This means parts of the structure will be built up at different periods, ans some places, where unrestored, will leave similar marks as the original native structures.
