05 Private House, Buckinghamshire
by AP2022
As an architectural designer in LWA I had the honour to be part of the design team of this private residential project in Buckinghamshire. The site is located on a slope offering outstanding views. The architectural composition consists of two distinctive levels of different nature and character: a heavy, stone volume on the ground floor and a lighter timber volume sitting on top of it. Level 00 is pushed into the slopy hill, forming the ‘base’ of the composition. Built entirely by local flint creates a grounded, earthy feeling that surrounds the common spaces of the property. Level 01 is an elegant lighter structure, where the three bedrooms of the house are located. It is cladded with charred timber, and offers unprevented views towards the fields while sitting on top of the ground floor stone volume.

The design process included a lot of detailed design of the interior spaces, such as wardrobes, shelving and kitchen joinery, which was often presented to the client with a mixture of photorealistic and stylized imagery that I was responsible for. Good examples are the kitchen joinery and the stair wall which not only supports the elegant light-weight stair but also operates as a border between the living room and the entrance hall, and creates space for a hidden TV unit and open shelving.
Regarding the exterior of the house, due to the numerous different interfaces between different materials such as flint, charred timber, bronze trims, and window frames, we created a series of detailed sections throughout the building to describe all the different conditions.
During this process, I had the opportunity to study thoroughly a vast variety of construction details while obtaining a deep knowledge of how surfaces of different materiality can cooperate in the most exquisite way.
