1999 1500 Casey Fenton was looking for an inexpensive fight from Boston to Iceland
This incident ignited the idea and the same year the site was registered.
So she wrote 1500 email to local students looking accomodation and got over 50 invitation back from them giving her a space to sleep or live
2003
The site went public by Hoffer, Sebastein and Leonardo Silveira.
2005 2006
in 2004 they had 6000 members and in 2005 reached 45000 members
Joe and Brain are two guys in San Fransisco who cannot pay the rent. They decided to rent out three airmatresses and serve home breakfast.

They joined their ex roommate as a co-founder as he is a brilliant engineer to help build the site. and got 2 bookigs only after the development
To raise more money they gathers 40k from selling candidates cereals and they got their first funding from Paul Graham’s Y combinator in 2009, but still with this help they could onl make $200 a week for months
Then they realized that the pictures posted were just not good enough. so they flew to New York and took photos of each listing one by one
The site witnessed a crash resulting in loosing almost all its data and registery membership but that got the attention of media and investors and got help to rebuild the site in only 4 days!

The website turned private and had 3 Million users of 1 million active user

They made a simple blog and with it got 3 visitors paying $80 each, from there they thought it would be a great idea.
By 2011 they have riased $7.2M from many investors (one o of them was Ashton Kutcher) after getting the idea of renting out whole houses and raised a seed round from sequoia of $600k!
After only one week their weekly income doubledto $400 which helped them grow,but they were still rejected by Fred Wilson in New York
