I am a recent graduate of the Universidad Europea de Madrid with a license in architecture from Spain. I lived in Cairo, Egypt until I was 22 when I moved to Spain to pursue my degree. I have had work experience in both Cairo and Madrid in prestigious architecture offices. Over the years of living in an urban context, I developed an interest in the dynamics of society and the complex relationship it has with the context it inhabits. Using architecture as a tool to gear the urban platform to challenge social conditions and overcome social barriers fascinates me. I believe the best way to tackle these complex issues is to collaborate and be apart of an interdisciplinary team. I hope to find a professional opportunity to work within an urban context dealing with citizen interaction through social participation and democratic dialogue between urban stakeholders.

Cairo, Egypt
UMMAH means a haven, a place of safety, a place offering favourable conditions that benefits all. This project aims to provide that to Cairienes and Egyptians in order to reintegrate marginalized communities into society and counter the urban segregation that exists in Cairo. Preceding research included the issue of social marginalization, condition and lack of public spaces in Cairo and finally the urban segregation caused by highways, walls, fences etc. What UMMAH introduces is a system of floating platforms of public space which can travel along the nile connecting to the banks of the river or creating islands where people can gather. Many Egyptians belong to one or more of the these marginalzed groups. As a marginalized individual, one suffers from the ability to unite with the people of their country and finds many obstacles when trying to serve the country. Specifically in times of political instability and corruption, where the people have to work together. These characteristic differences have to be overlooked, accepted and respected. Citizens need to feel belonging unconditionally in order to perform to the best of their ability.

Firstly, a new platform of iinitiatives that was born in the Egyptian Revolution iof Jan 25, 2011. These organizations all aim to improve the urban and social platform of Cairo and Egypt through art, advocacy, public space, media and more. These groups would drive the public spaces and create workshops and installtions through the spaces UMMAH provides. Secondly was identifying the Nile as an opportunity for social gathering. Partly because of its role in history, a place of communication and social cooperation in the times of flooding. And partly because of how closed off it has been from the Egyptian public. Due to this it has not yet been privatized like the rest of the city, and it can potentially welcome everyone. Sectioning through the city, from the street level to the nile shows us an isolation of the water, allowing for better air quality as well as a space of incubation which could protect the initative. UMMAH chages the section of Cairo by giving the first hand experience of our river to the people, the public. To see full project visit: http://extrazoom.com/gallery/ UMMAH.html

This project is highly inspired by the community and the space of Tahrir Square and its performance during the revolution. In 18 days there was a flowing system of security, healthcare, recycling and more. The volunteers that made that possible are the same volunteers who will monitor and supervise UMMAH. The aim is to create a neutral space for all, built by all and defined by all while avoiding privatization, evacuation and division. A tool for Egyptians to build bridges and connect with one another and to build their UMMAH. To see full project visit: http://extrazoom.com/gallery/UMMAH.html

Taking back these concepts to cairo we find that neither do we have a local culture for sharing our homes, nor do tourists visiting Egypt have various accomodation options. They are often restricted to tourist buses and packaged trips to very touristic areas, often finding it hard to connect with locals. This project attempts to provide a mutal exchange between locals and tourists. Encouraging locals to move out of their homes to gain independence as well as providing tourists with genuine local exeriences and friends. During the revolution of January 25th, 2011, many people came to Tahrir Square to voice their troubles, Examples I remember were women, bus drivers, christians and disabled people, but there are many many more. They raised awareness about their cause and their struggles and found support in the square. When Tahrir was evacuated many people lost contact and therefore lost support. With an empty plot overlooking Tahrir Square, what better program to introduce than a center which registers the initiatives that were born in Tahrir, give them a structure and a place to grow and communicate. as citizens, workers, believers in a certain faith or as anyone who does not fall in the mainstream public. The initiative center is a place where individuals and groups can go to register their cause, and people can go and learn about them and be invited to join them and participate. It would be the revolutions headquarters where people can follow up on progress. To see full project visit: http://issuu.com/aliasabry/docs/final_test

The circulation was designed to make a dynamic walk through the building, at times walking through a very narrow corridor while getting glimpses of very open space and at other times being completely lost in an open space with little hints of circulation. Between floors, the circulation is manipulated to control the pace of the user, at times only exhibiting one space at a time where the user can slowly observe the space and its qualities whereas at other times overwhelming you with various activities and your eye moves more quickly. Walking through the building one sees changing elevations, similar to the skyline of a city. The materiality of the each space depended on whether it was a place “to see” or “be seen”.

The biodigestor will receive organic (from cafeteria), green (from gardening) and paper (from printing stations) waste. The biodigestor will need multiple facilities, those include: a pre-treatment facility, a facility for the biodigestion to occur, a facility to handle the gases produced (CO2 and methane) and finally a facility to store compost which will be used as soil fertilizer. This report is focused on the facility of storing the fertilizer. It will investigate the spatial requirements as well as the optimum condition for fertilizer to be stored in. Aluche will become the intial LABORATORY where the Vista Alegre community can EXECUTE, PUbLICIZE and ASSESS their initiatiaves and ideas with the international public. It is where ideas move from THEORY to PRACTICE. From there, successful ideas can be pass on to CHANGE THE WORLD.
WHAT - GLOBAL SCALE
Vista Alegre will become the BRAIN where a diverse community share their cultures and knowledge with the intention to INVENT, CREATE and PROPOSE new IDEAS and SOLUTIONS which relate to the current reality. It will act as a LOCAL WORLD within Madrid, a REGIONAL NUCLEUS within pain and an INTERNATIONAL INTELLECTUAL HEADQUARTERS within the world.
WHAT
Vista Alegre is a walled community with many insitiutional buildings while Aluche is more exposed.
WHO
The idea of the project is to find an opportunity in the diversity of the people as well as in its isolation from the rest of madrid. The proposal is to create a social and cultural program that poromotes exposure and transparency in different cultures, using the diversity to be a sample of the world and its diversity.
WHO - INTERESTS
Carabanchel and Aluche are districts in the south western suburbs of Madrid, Spain. Their condition is that they are cut off from the city with weak transportation links. They also have a high immigrant population with diverse cultures living in parallel to one another which weakens the social fabric that exists there.

IF TORRELODONES IS TO EXPAND ITS TOURISM INDUSTRY THE BIGGEST ATTRACTION IT HAS IS ITS PROTECTED AREAS WHICH ARE THE GUADARRAMA AND LA CUENCA ALTA DEL MANZANARES PARK. NOT ONLY DO THESE PARKS NEED TO BE MARKETED BUT THEY ALSO HAVE TO BE INVESTED IN REGARDING FACILITIES OR BASIC INFRASTRUCTURE WHICH WILL ALLOW TOURISTS TO SPEND MORE TIME IN THEM AS WELL AS ATTRACT A WIDER VARIETY OF TOURISTS MAKING IT A COMFORTABLE HIKE OR VISIT TO THE PARKS. BY PROVIDING ECO-POINTS TORRELODONES IS GIVING THE USERS A CONNECTION TO CIVILIZATION WHILE DEEP INSIDE THE PARK.
THESE ECO-POINTS NEED TO BE A CONDENSED VERSION OF CIVILIZATION WHICH MEANS FIRSTLY THEY SHOULD PROVIDE INFORMATION, ABOUT THE PARK AS WELL AS GETTING BACK TO THE CITY. SECONDLY THEY SHOULD SET AN EXAMPLE TO THE PARK USERS BY BEING ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE AND ECO-FRIENDLY. THIS IMPLIES THATTHE ELECTRICITY THEY USE WILL BE SOLAR GENERATED ELECTRICITY. THEY SHOULD BE SMALL KIOSKS OR CABINS THAT DO NOT DOMINATE THE PARK. THEY SHOULD ALSO PROVIDE BASIC MEDICAL HELP AND TOOLS AS WELL AS BASIC SURVIVAL NEEDS SUCH AS FOOD AND DRINK. DEPENDING ON THE RUNNERS THEY COULD ALSO PROVIDE LIMITED ACCOMODATION. THEY SHOULD SELL THE ELEMENTS THAT ARE CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL IN HIKING AND CAMPING INSIDE THE PARK.

RELATION TO OTHER FACILITIES: IN ORDER TO MAKE THESE MAPS AS ACCURATE AS POSSIBLE THE COOPERATION OF MANY DIFFERENT MINISTRIES IS NEEDED. -MOST IMPORTANTLY THE TRANSPORTATION SERVICE SHOULD ENSURE THAT HOTSPOTS ARE WELL CONNECTED AND THAT CONNECTION SHOULD BE EASILY UNDERSTOOD.
RELATION TO OTHER FACILITIES: -CO-ORDINATION WITH MEDICAL FACILITIES IS NEEDED IN THE CASE OF EMERGENCIES. -THEY NEED TO KNOW HOW THE FASTEST WAY TO GET TO THE TOWN IS THEREFORE THERE SHOULD BE INFRASTRUCTURE TO MAKE WAY FOR EMERGENCIES.

«When public spaces are successful, they will increase opportunities to participate in communal activity. In the parks, plazas, markets, waterfronts, and natural areas of our cities, people from different cultural groups can come together in a supportive context of mutual enjoyment. As these experiences are repeated, public spaces become vessels to carry positive communal meanings». (Carr, Francis, Rivlin and Stone, 1993, p. 344)

THIS PLACE HAS POTENTIAL AS A PLEASENT RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY SINCE IT HAS A LAKE IN THE MIDDLE (EMBALSE LOS PEÑASCALES) WHICH CAN BE TRANSFORMED INTO A PARK FOR COUPLES TO RELAX AND THOSE WITH CHILDREN TO HAVE AN OUTDOOR PLAYGROUND. This project consisted of an urban analsis of Torrelodones, a municipality in the northwest of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, Spain. It is situated 29 kilometers northwest from the city of Madrid. Because of its location between the Sierra de Guadarrama and the metropolitan area of the capital, it is linked to two districts in Madrid: the agricultural area of Guadarrama and the metropolitan area of Madrid.

“Public spaces are not a frivolity. They are just as important as hospitals and schools. They create a sense of belonging. This creates a different type of society – a society where people of all income levels meet in public space is a more integrated, socially healthier one.” – Enrique Penalosa

People of the Seas & the Deserts
Responding to French artist JR’s call to action to bring stories to the public and the media, this project responds to the centralization of the revolution and of Egypt in general. While the Cairienes, as well as urban citizens, fight and protest for their rights and freedom, it was a reminder that in this revolution we should also represent the lost rights of Egyptians who can’t afford to be in Tahrir Square.
CAIRO, EGYPT, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8TH, 2012
This is Aam Hassan, a fisherman and a bedouin, from the south of Egypt, living between a small town and the Wadi El Gemal desert. He represents an ancient Bedouin community that has traditionally inhabited the desert regions. They mostly live off the grid and avoid the government. They have their own economy of trade and provide their own security.
Bedouins are not allowed to form political parties or register their lands. His photo was posted on a private balcony wall visible to many high buildings in the high end zamalek district which hosts a large portion of Cairo’s international community as well as a central hub for Cairo’s youth and active community. Cairo, Egypt, 12:00pm

The Mother of a Martyr CAIRO, EGYPT, THURSDAY, JANUARY 10TH, 2013
Cairo, Egypt 01:30 a.m.
The first away match for El Ahly after Kareeka’s death was on 1 February 2012 against Masry of Portsaid team. Under the auspices of the police, 72 football fans from al-Ahly's biggest fan club 'Ultras Ahlawy' were slaughtered in the stadium by football fans from Port Said city, and what is believed to have been paid thugs. This was later known as the Port Said Massacre.
“Politically involved but not politically driven”
-Ahmad Sabry, who witnessed the death of his childhood friend.
Alia Sabry
A picture of Kareeka’s mother’s face pasted on the fence of the Ahly Sports Club Fence on his 1 year death anniversary
Inspired by French artist JR’s “Inside-Out Project” which aims to bring the media and the publi’s attention to forgotten stories of minorities or people who’s troubles are neglected. ALIA SABRY - INDIVIDUAL - 2012
After the stepping down of the Mubarak regime, Ultras Ahly, the official fan club of the Ahly Football Club, members played an active role in the demonstrations against the SCAF (Supreme Council of the Armed Forces). The most infamous were the Muhammad Mahmoud demonstrations in addition to the Egyptian Cabinet demonstrations. On the latter, Muhammad Mustafa Kareeka, a member of Ultras Ahlawy, fell as a martyr, which outraged the Ultras, leading them to chant against SCAF on the following Ahly match against Masr El Makassa.
The Ultras Ahly club was and is a huge threat to the SCAF as they are one of two big groups who capitalise on their physical and organisational capabilities and are able to mobilize their members instantly in any circumstance. The first being the Muslim brotherhood, and secondly are the Ultras Ahlawy. They are the only two groups which unite to protect each other and therefore pose a threat to the army as well as the police.
"It was a nightmare. I had to cover myself in my friend's blood to escape the thugs who were chasing me,"
Today, the 72 martyrs are remembered and pasted on the Ahly Sports club fences, however Kareeka is not. On the day of Kareeka’s one year death anniversary, with the help of the Ahly fans, we aproached Kareeka’s mother and pasted her photo on the Ahly’s front wall during the night when security was low. The aim was to revive a forgotten story and remember a forgotten soul. In loving memory of all the martyrs
