Alice Franklin Project Report
Paper Brief Brief This was a self-initiated brief that I set so I could gain more skill with paper. Evaluation I was really happy with what I got from this brief, I definitely learnt a new skill that I would love to pursue in the future. I was initially going to try a different paper cut/folding technique weekly, but found this took too long with the commitments of other modules to keep going. I really like the final outcome as it is really intricate but there could be more precision if I had more practice. Overall, for a small brief, I am really happy with this and got a lot of compliments from it.
Colours May vary Brief For this brief we had to make a print based product that fit the theme ‘Out of Order’, to go in an exhibition in Colours May Vary. Evaluation Out of all of the work I have produced this year, this is my least favourite. I wasn’t particularly inspired by the theme and I originally wanted to direct it to my practice more which is making educational or informative work. I ended up going with my hate for inspirational quotes that people love so much and the ‘Keep Calm and Carry on’ being the focus. I feel like this is a poor design and I was stuck in a literal mind at the time, and I feel like it shows as its not creative at all. Overall, I think this is a poor design and didn’t show off illustration well at the exhibition
Penguin Random House Brief For this brief we were asked to design a new cover for the book ‘The Secret Diary Of Adrian Mole Aged 13 & ¾’ Evaluation I found this brief went pretty well, I am pleased with the final outcome although I would definitely make changes if I were to do this again. Firstly, I am really happy with the main illustration on the front cover, I think it has a good composition and I am happy with the digital skills on this bit of the cover as I am not as confident with it as most. Although, I think the rest of the cover lacks professionalism, and almost feels rushed. Now I look back, I don’t understand why Ive left a clear error on the cover and I think It could have more detail on parts of it and just more consideration for the composition of the cover as a whole and not the individual elements.
Papyrus Brief Brief Create an A3 line illustration for a colouring book that helps prevent suicide in young adults. Evaluation For this brief I decided that I wanted to include a level of informing within the illustration itself. So I spent time researching activities that can help with depression and suicidal thoughts. I am quite happy with this as it was actually chosen to go in the book, but I think there would be bits that I’d change if I did again. First of all, the brief stated we needed to uses 3pt line thickness, but I think the illustration would benefit from varied line thicknesses for the foreground and background. I also struggled with blank space as I was conscious that there needed to be things to colour in.
Extended Colouring Book Brief
Brief This is a self-initiated brief where I extended the colouring book illustration by doing 2 more A3 illustrations, all including different activities that help depression. Evaluation I am quite happy with this illustration, although I do think I would have liked to have changed the line thickness like I suggested with the papyrus brief, but the trees would have had to have been changed and this was really time consuming when I had other briefs and modules to work on.
FMP- Viking Game Brief For my FMP, I decided to make an educational board game for Primary school children based on Vikings and their invasion of England. Evaluation I am really pleased with the outcome for this brief. I spent a long time completing and re-working the individual components needed to make up the full product. I feel like I worked really well with the advice given to me and I think it improved my work considerably. I feel like each piece of the game has been finished to a professional standard and the concept hits all of the curriculum required in schools. Ive also tried to hit points within the hidden curriculum for instance children working together, promoting communication skills and team work. I have considered each component critically and I am very happy with the finished product.
For this project I have spent a lot of time improving my digital skills to get the best possible outcomes. I feel like each component looks good individually and together as a set. I am really pleased that I have been able to make a full game with the time considered. I do need to get more facts for the cards for the exhibition, so I will have to spend more time researching after the deadline. I had to re-think the packaging composition after completing a rectangle shaped design for the normal packaging, as the image was lost in the empty space surrounding it. I do think it looks a lot better but I fell like the packaging could be improved but I would need some critique. Overall, I am really happy with this Project and I have really enjoyed doing it although it has been very time consuming. I really love the 3D printed longboats as they just add that extra professional element to the project and make it fun and appealing to the target audience.
