New @ BZERC STICKY NOTE STORY MAP Story maps are organizers that draw attention to the elements of a story: characters, setting, problem, climax, resolution and more. Instead of writing on the graphic organizer, have students use small sticky notes to complete each section. In this way, readers can add as many stickies as needed for characters or events. (Also, if they make a mistake, they can just discard and replace that sticky - a particular bonus for struggling readers who don't like to be "wrong.") To download the organizer, click here. To enlarge the completed Story Map from Caught in the Blizzard, click on the image at the right.

HAVE YOU TEXTED YOUR STUDENTS LATELY? Some interesting new research indicates that a simple text message to students or their parents can be the "nudge" they need to stay on track with learning. It's possible to send regular group messages with reminders about upcoming tests, assignment due dates, or reading at home. But it might be even more effective to send personalized messages to individual students who need that nudge the most. There are a number of apps which enable teachers to send text messages without using their personal telephone numbers. Blogger Lisa Nelson shares some of them in "Seven Ways to Connect with Your Parents Via Texting." Featured apps include: LocaModa, Remind*, Classpager, Twitter, PollEverywhere, Cel.ly, and Mobile Commons *Note from Alice: I’ve checked this one out and it seems very straight forward and easy to use. I would recommend it.
