Legal Climate for LGBTQ Employees (Room #5)

According to the Wall Street Journal, college savings is the next big benefit employers are offering to attract and retain employees and strengthen company culture. College Savings Mississippi offers two options for saving for higher education, one of which can be offered to employees through payroll deduction at a low rate affordable to all savers. It’s easy to set up and costs your company nothing. Find out how you can help today’s workforce save so that tomorrow’s workforce is what your company needs it to be.

In 2013, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Defense of Marriage Act which defined “marriage” and “spouse” to apply only to opposite-sex unions for federal benefit purposes. In 2015, the Supreme Court held that the fundamental right to marriage applied to same-sex marriages, overturning state law bans on same-sex marriage. The courts are now considering whether sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender stereotypes are protected categories under Title VII. In this session, we will define “LGBTQ” and explore federal and state laws on these emerging issues.

Speaker: Michelle Williams, Chief of Staff at the Office of State Treasurer Lynn Fitch

Speaker: Jennifer G. Hall, Shareholder at Baker Donelson

Speaker: Jimmy Giles, Coordinator at MHA Solutions, Inc.

But no matter where we work, we all do the same job. And that job is leading our organizations through uncertain times, using the greatest asset we have: our people. As HR leaders, it is our responsibility to build a 21st Century workforce, and for our people to thrive, we must build a 21st Century workplace—one that is built on the solid principles of innovation, competitiveness and fairness. We are fortunate that we don’t have to do this work alone. We are part of a global team of practice. That is the value of a profession. In our work, we face change, uncertainty and volatility; it is important that SHRM and its members stand together. We are shaping the policies and setting new standards for making the 21st century workplace work. We will break new paths, and we will do it together.
