Why do we need more members? We all know attrition to be the gradual reduction of a workforce by employees retiring and resigning, rather than by a layoff. Attrition happens with customers, too. They age, or simply transition out of an organization’s target demographic. Pilot Clubs are impacted by attrition. Our members age, move, or transition on to other interests and obligations. It’s vital that each Pilot strives to replenish its Club membership. Where do we find new members? 1. Tell other people about PILOT. Do you look for opportunities to talk Pilot? Do you have a brochure if someone asks for one? Do you, at least, have a card with your contact information? When you truly believe in something, you want to tell others about it. 2. Visit mother-morning-out programs at nearby churches. These are programs that provide daycare to allow young mothers an opportunity to run errands or just have metime. Here you will find moms who may not work outside the home and may want an outlet for friendship and service. 3. Contact your local celebrities. If you see them on your local TV station or listen to them on your radio, these are

people who have a voice in the community. Send them a Pilot brochure with a hand-written invitation and FOLLOW UP! Have you thought to contact the local reporters who write for your newspaper? 4. What about the Senior Adult Community Center? This is a great place to locate new members. You might find that these individuals have a great energy. They’re looking for an opportunity to feel needed and to be a part of something. 5. Make sure that your meetings are informative AND entertaining. Do YOU look forward to attending? If not, reflect on what can be changed. Some of the most successful clubs stick to a one-hour meeting. And some have nontraditional meeting schedules. 6. Set personal goals. We all know the old adage... If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit nothing! So true! 7. Set Club goals, and make them public. They say that when you diet, your odds of success are far better if you put it out there. It’s called accountability. Make a poster and display it. State your goals on social media. With more people, we can DO MORE! If you have great ideas how to increase our numbers and our strength, please let us know so that we can share them! PILOTLOG SUMMER 2017 | 9

PRESIDENT’S LETTER Connie J. Moore, Pilot International President Serving as your President for Pilot International this year was a deep honor. The role offered the privilege of interacting with Pilot clubs and members across our country, the Bahamas as well as Japan. While each club is unique, they are also familiar. The familiarity is the essence of what Pilot is all about. It’s the genuine caring and giving spirit that Pilots extend to each other and their communities. Multiply that spirit across our geographic reach, and you’ve got the power of Pilot. Together we did, and will continue to do, amazing things. I’d like to share a few of the accomplishments we achieved together over the 2016-17 Pilot year. The beginning of 2016-17 marked nearly four years without an Executive Director for Pilot International. Our elected Executive Committee made it a priority to end this leadership void. We engaged a recruiter to develop a plan of action. Advertisements were launched in August of 2016, applications reviewed in September, interviews conducted in October, and an offer made in November. Before Christmas last year, we welcomed Nancy White as Executive Director at our Macon, Georgia headquarters. We believe with that stability in place, Pilot is poised to build for a promising future. An International Committee was formed this year to evaluate issues unique to Pilot’s international clubs. These include currency exchange rates, academic scholarships, and language barriers. We believe much Pilot growth potential resides overseas; and we want to be responsive to the unique needs of global clubs. Pilot International Director Merrily Burns donated to Headquarters an online translation software system for English to Japanese translation. We look forward to offering our Japan clubs the results of this in the Fall of 2017. An anonymous donor established an International Scholarship fund with a $30,000 gift. This will benefit students in Bahamas, Japan and South Africa. A donation of $10,000 was received to begin a new scholarship for Anchor students only. This new scholarship will be called the KC Anchor Scholarship. This scholarship will award $2,500 to two deserving Anchors every year. The 2017-18 Executive Committee is developing criteria for this scholarship. More to come in the new Pilot year! Another milestone this year was the enhancement of BrainMinders™ by a committee chaired by Past Pilot Inter-

national President Judy Langley. BrainMinders™ is a signature program of Pilot International introduced in 2001. The committee thoroughly reviewed and revamped the content and it is available for Pilots and Anchors to use in their communities. Its educational and entertaining curriculum covers a broad span of brain health and safety topics. For children, the topics include personal fitness, bus safety, playground safety, seat belt use, fire safety, gun safety, bullying and more. For youth, parents and teachers, brain health and safety resources are now available on our Pilot website at http://www.pilotinternational.org/member-resource-category/brainminders-resources/. For older adults, the topics cover brain exercises and safety tips. Through our Foundation, we continued to offer transformational funding to individuals and communities. Pilot International awarded over $175,000 this year to various communities throughout our world – and this does not include what individual clubs give in their respective communities. Twenty-five grants were awarded for a total of $52,270. Twenty-five scholarships were awarded for a total of $30,575. $4,289 was given out through Pick Me Up grants. Some $15,250 Safe Harbor grants were made to Pilot members in South Carolina, Japan, Louisiana, Florida and the Bahamas to assist them in rebuilding their lives after devastating floods and hurricanes. And special recognition goes to the Pilot Club of Charlotte, North Carolina. Through their “Love Lights” giving and with Pilot International, they donated $75,000 to the Bryan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Duke University. At the close of 2016-17, Pilots had 324 clubs and 7,099 members; and 200 Anchor clubs reflecting 7,531 members. My heart is full of gratitude for each of you, for being a Pilot, and living our motto of Doing, Caring and Being more with each encounter. Together, we are building a better world through friendship and service. Today’s world needs Pilot more than ever. With the resolve of each of us, we will expand our membership in the coming year to ensure our impact is even stronger. In Pilot Friendship

GOOD NEWS Pilot Club of Louisville:

Serving the community for 71 years The Pilot Club of Louisville received its charter on May 23, 1946 with the meeting being held in the banquet room of the Colonial Terrace. As the club grew through the years, they performed many service projects. Sight-aid was the first project. Many underprivileged children were fitted with glasses. The club provided treatment that restored sight to twin boys, Amos and Andy Billups. The club received national recognition for this project. Participating with clubs around the world, Louisville Pilots helped restore the stained-glass windows in a church in the French village of Vimontiers after the church was bombed by mistake by the U. S. Air Force. Early fundraisers included cookbook sales for $1, Tiny Tot contest, and collection of Duz, Ivory Flakes, and Camay box tops. For each box top the club received a penny. As an extra bonus Proctor and Gamble sent the Louisville Pilots a check for $100 and declared them the state winners. Seventy-one years later, the Pilot Club of Louisville now has an all-time high membership of 57 members.

A FAREWELL TO PRESIDENT CONNIE

As another Pilot year draws to a close, we say farewell to our 2016-2017 Pilot President Connie Moore. Her ability to lead and inspire cemented yet another successful year for our organization. Thank you President Connie for all you do!

24 | SUMMER 2017 PILOTLOG

A FAREWELL TO PRESIDENT CONNIE

“Serving with my friend, President Connie, has truly been an honor. We had the pleasure of serving together at the district level and throughout her time on the Executive Committee and many memories have been made. I could not have asked for a better Pilot mentor. Connie’s Pilot spirit, drive, service and knowledge shine through in all she does for our beloved organization. Congratulations on a job well done Connie!” – Holly Baker “I’ve had so much fun working with Connie this year! She’s so organized and has been a wonderful President to work with!” – Melinda Morgan

“Connie is one of the most organized and energetic people I know. She keeps us all on task while also keeping us enthusiastic and excited about the work to be done. If Connie tells you she is going to do a job, you should either get on board or get out of the way, because when Connie sets herself a task, you can count on it getting done, and done well. Connie is so small in stature, she often has to stand on a box to see over the lectern. But in those things that are the true measure of a person: intelligence, effort, and heart, Connie stands shoulder to shoulder with giants. As a leader, Connie does more, she cares more, and because of her leadership, she inspires us all to be more. She is the true embodiment of the Pilot Motto: Friendship and Service. It has been my pleasure to serve on the EC with her, my honor to serve as her secretary, and my true joy to become her friend.” – Deb Hays

Editor’s note: The angel in pink is a member of the Pilot Club of Macon, Georgia.

My angel wore pink BY MARK BALLARD As seen in the Macon Telegraph on July 13, 2017 Life can be really tough at times. All of us have experienced the little hills and valleys of life that pop up on a daily basis. We deal with them and just keep going. But, at times, life puts a raging storm in our paths without warning or mercy. In my lifetime, I have had my share of category 5 life storms. Two of these storms were a horrific wreck my mother had and my daddy’s suicide. These kinds of life-changing events leave wounds that don’t heal easily but, when they do, always leave a scar as a reminder. I’ve heard that what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, but sometimes I wonder. It is at these times that we have to dig deep for the courage to handle the situation given to us. Often there is no time to think. We must act quickly and bravely. To do that we can use the help of an angel — someone sent to us from out of the blue. Two weeks ago, I didn’t know I was going to need an angel, but I soon found out I would. The day started off beautifully and I decided to take a long, pleasant bike ride through downtown Macon. I texted one of my best friends, Stephanie Shadden, to see if she wanted to come with me. She did and joined me about four miles into my ride. We embarked on our selected route winding through the streets of downtown. We had not been together long before tragedy reared its ugly head. Stephanie suddenly fell off her bicycle and was badly injured. I threw my bike down and found myself in a crisis. We were all alone and I was shaking so badly I could barely dial 911. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a woman dressed in a bright pink outfit walking towards us. She grabbed my hand, we both took Stephanie’s hands and began to pray! For over 20 minutes in the blazing hot sun, she helped me attend to Stephanie on the pavement until the ambulance arrived. I know God sent her to me. Her name is Pat Vickers and I will never forget her as long as I live. “It’s going to be alright!” Pat tried to convince me between prayers. I was in shock and never let go of her hand. When you are in crisis mode, every second seems like an eternity. We thought the ambulance would never get there. I’m not

sure I could have made it through those twenty minutes without Pat’s comforting presence. As the ambulance sped away with Stephanie, my angel in bright pink offered me a hug. I warned her that I was extremely sweaty but she didn’t care. I cried like a baby as she held me. “I know who you are,” she whispered in my ear. “I never miss your columns or events. Without even knowing it, you have helped me many times.” Stephanie has a long road ahead of her to recovery but she is a strong person and continues to improve. A few days later, I got in touch with Pat. She’s my new best friend and I can’t wait to introduce her to Stephanie when she gets better. We all have the ability within us to be someone’s angel. When we come upon a situation where we can help, we need to do what Pat did. She could have just driven by but she didn’t. Instead, she put on her angel wings and helped us. Angels come in all shapes and sizes. They also come in all races, ethnicities and nationalities. When it comes to helping another human being, there are no barriers. Kindness is universal. I can still see Pat and her pink dress in my mind. When you think about it, what other color should an angel wear in Macon? PILOTLOG SUMMER 2017 | 27
