President'sMessage Best wishes for a Happy New Year! Because of Pilots like you, the year 2013 was an amazing one! Together we fostered many accomplishments, and we can say with great pride, “I am a Pilot.” It is heartwarming to see how many of you have incorporated the new initiatives in areas of service: Anchor [Youth Development & Leadership], Brain Safety & Fitness, and Caring for Families in Times of Need. Your participation in the first annual International Care & Kindness Week provided awareness and services for caregivers and those who need uplifting, as more than 1.2 million people were exposed to our message. The Executive Committee is working diligently to develop a Strategic Plan to keep us focused on what is best for our organization not only today but in years to come. Several task forces and committee have been working to provide recommendations for governance, operational and investment practices, and election procedures, as well as to determine our scholarship and grant award winners. We are indebted to the tireless work of many Pilots who serve our organization in various ways. The addition of a Pilot Club and Anchor Club in South Africa is truly exciting as we expand our friendship and service globally. At last year’s international convention, the district and club leaders were encouraged to “buddy” with another leader to share ideas and support one another. Please continue this important communication throughout the year, and for those of you who have not established a “buddy,” it is not too late! We can never overlook the value of friendship and bonding within our organization. It is indeed one of the features that sets our service organization apart from others. As the New Year dawns, I hope that you will continue to treasure your international membership and celebrate Pilot’s accomplishments and the promise of its bright future. Make a solid commitment to “Do More. Care More. Be More.” Acknowledge an outstanding individual or Club by nominating them for one of the new awards available on our website. See the November/December issue of the "Pilot International News" (available in the Media section of the Pilot International Website) and this issue of The Pilot Log for more details on these awards. Share the value of being a Pilot with others, and be an Ambassador for our organization. Start a new Pilot Club or Anchor Club and expand the outreach of our mission. Make use of Pilot’s resources, and provide a new service in your community. Become a leader within our organization, and be a part of Pilot’s exciting future. Make a commitment to attend the 2014 Pilot International Annual Convention and Leadership Conference in Chicago July 2nd – 6th so that you gain knowledge and skills to be an even more amazing Pilot. Together we will be “Celebrating the Gift of Pilot.” Donate to Pilot International in a way that will contribute to our organization’s sustainability and that will make a difference in someone’s life. Participate in the “Give More. Win More…in the WINdy City” and other fundraising opportunities. Pilot International works very hard to provide our membership with informative and timely communications including the Pilot International News, The Anchor Newsletter and numerous electronic communications designed to keep you up to speed with all of the exciting things happening with Pilot like general announcements or partnership opportunities. But, according to the most recent data provided by Constant Contact, of the 8547 members listed in our email database, less than 1400 of you are actually opening your messages from Pilot International, and of those 1400, only about 400 are reading the messages and clicking on the links to additional information. This action is vital to receive items such as the Pilot International News which comes to you via a clickable link from Constant Contact. Don't let these good gifts go to waste! As a Pilot, it is your responsibility to remain engaged and informed, and Pilot International Headquarters strives to provide continual communication to you, our valued members. But, in order to "be in the know," you have to take that quick, easy step and open the message. Do you think you should be receiving our communications but you haven't seen one in your inbox? What makes a member “Outstanding?” That is for YOU to decide! Do you have a special member in your club who leads the kind of life you believe would inspire others? Does that person contribute to his or her society outside of the club in a way you feel is especially important? Do you have a member in your club with a unique career or someone who has made a name for themselves in a singular and positive way outside of their work with Pilot or Anchor? Then tell us! Service Club Leaders Conference Provides Excellent Information for Pilot International Indianapolis, Indiana • November 21-24, 2013

he Service Club Leaders Conference provides great opportunities for leaders to continually improve their leadership skills and the viability of our service organizations. Having personal conversations with leaders from other organizations is valuable beyond measure. One key thought in this year's conference was that to be successful, we must remain relevant. In order to achieve this, organizations must be more nimble and less rigid, and embrace ways to effectively attract, educate, and engage members of all generations. We have made some moves in this direction, but it is critical that we continue to devote our time and resources in this effort. - Pilot International President Judy Langley Hosted by Kiwanis International, the 54th Annual Service Club Leaders Conference was held in Indianapolis, Indiana, November 21-24, 2013, and attended by Pilot International President Judy Langley, PI President Elect Sherry Johnson, and former PI Executive Director Melanie Schild. Other organizations represented were Altrusa; American Mensa, Ltd.; Civitan International; Cosmopolitan International; Lions Clubs International; National Ambucs, Inc.; The National Exchange Club; Optimist International; Ruritan International; Sertoma; United States Junior Chamber; Women's Overseas Service League; Y's Men International; and Zonta International. Many presentations were provided with time for attendees to network and discuss current issues. Debra Zabloudil, President and CEO of The Learning Studio, presented on "Jagger, Madonna, Beyoncé, Bieber: Setting the Stage for Each Generation to Shine." It was shared that we are a more youthful culture, and our challenge is to remain relevant. As of 2010, there were 40 million traditionalists, 81 million Baby Boomers, 61 million Generation X, and 85 million Generation Y/Millennials. By 2025, 75% of the workforce will be Generation Y/Millennials. Do you want more Gen X's in your club? Keep in mind that they want a life/work balance, they work to live, and they like taking risks. They are technologically savvy and their core values are independence, pragmatism, fun, and balance. They will not want to serve many years to move up the ladder in an or6

ganization. They will be loyal if you are loyal to them. Millennials/Gen Y's are cautiously optimistic about the future, and they like a challenge. They are technologically driven and work most efficiently alone. Their core values are confidence, tolerance for diversity, morality, and civic duty. It was pointed out that service organizations must be less structured and more nimble to attract and keep younger members. It was suggested that we may want to inventory all current product and service opportunities for members/ customers and staff. We may need to offer different things for different age groups and have members mentor someone who wishes to move up to their position in the club, not just the top offices. What's important to members? The "Why!" Remember the reference to "why" at our convention in New Orleans and since then? As Simon Sinek stated in his book, Start With Why, we should focus on the "why" first, before the how and the what. Pilots, you may want to refer back to Dr. Kathy Sturgis on the PI website for a refresher on the importance of "why." Speaker Zabloudil closed by stating the importance of paying attention to changing demographics and societal trends. Ethan Zohn, 2012 winner of "Survivor," spoke on "Surviving Life and Giving Back." It was inspiring to hear how he saw the need to prevent the death of so many young boys in Africa due to HIV-Aids. Zohn used his winnings from "Survivor" to co-found Grassroots Soccer, a non-profit that uses soccer role models to teach young boys in Africa prevention of pilotinternational.org

HIV-Aids. As a cancer survivor as well, he said, "Never let a crisis go to waste. Use it as an opportunity to help others." He is now active in a movement to end cancer through races for the cause. He shared two tips: 1) "Be selfless in a selfish game. Sacrifice for the greater good." 2) "Be a member of the community." He is motivated by taking risks to make a difference for others. He believes in following your heart and initiating change in the world. What an amazing example he is for people of all ages! A presentation on "How to Use Digital & Social Media to Broaden Your Organization's Support" highlighted that online giving trends have increased, gift size has seasonality and fluctuates, and Millennials will contribute for a cause. It was shared that organizations do best when one staff member is dedicated to the daily task of promoting and tracking giving efforts of the organization. Karyn Nishimura Sneath, of NPOWER, had attendees complete a personal profile assessment to determine our dimensions of behavior. It was discussed how leaders who operate under the dimensions of dominance, influence, steadiness, and conscientiousness can work to gain strengths in other areas and work together as a team to better the organization. She quoted Tolstoy, PI President Judy Langley with Karen Zabloudil, "Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one President and CEO of The Learning Studio. thinks of changing himself." Good leaders know their strengths but always strive to be a balanced leader. Statistics were shared on the service organizations. Pilot International is the second highest in the small size organizations. Civilian and Zonta were the only organizations with an increase in membership over the last year. Pilot International recognizes the importance of having representation at this conference. Pilot International's President, President Elect, and Executive Director gain essential knowledge, examine current trends, and make professional connections to assure that we, as an organization, remain relevant in the non-profit world of volunteer service. PI President Elect Sherry Johnson stated, "The Service Club Leaders Conference allowed me to collaborate with numerous leaders from organizations all around the world. The most compelling thing I learned was seeing how organizations large and small electronically orientate thousands of new members annually online. Together, we can globally train more volunteers and members in making the world a better place to live."

Club and Individual Awards!

“…We shall radiate that which is unselfish, beautiful, and true.” Pilots and Anchors exemplify these words found in our Pilot Code of Ethics on a daily basis as we serve others in our global communities. It is the nature of Pilots to do good for others and not seek accolades for doing so. However, Pilot International, in an effort to inspire others and provide some of the best practices, has chosen to recognize some of our unsung heroes. We want you to be a part of making this happen by nominating individuals and clubs for the various awards we have put in place.

~ Club Awards ~ We are pleased to offer the following Club awards. Please note that there will be three recipients of each club award, based on club size: The nomination and award recognition for clubs will be based on club size as follows: • Silver 25 or fewer dues-paying members • Green 26-40 dues-paying members • Gold 41 or more dues-paying members Outstanding Club Growth Award This award will recognize clubs for outstanding membership growth. The club with the largest growth percentage in each of the membership categories shall be deemed the winner. For this club award only, no nomination is needed. PI Headquarters staff will determine the winners based on club size and membership totals. Outstanding Community Service Award This award will recognize clubs that have excelled in community service. Areas of consideration for this award will be the number of service projects, number of service hours by club members, amount of funds raised by the service projects, and overall community impact.

Outstanding Club Visibility Award This award will recognize clubs for outstanding visibility. Areas of consideration for this award might be Facebook page, club website, newspaper articles, television coverage, club newsletter, promotional materials for fundraisers, club promotional flyers/brochures and other avenues of visibility. Outstanding Pilot Club Award This award will recognize clubs that have excelled in all areas of operations including membership growth, retention of members, support of all three areas of focus, and visibility for the club in the community. Pilot Pick Me Ups Award This award will recognize clubs that have excelled in providing Pick Me Ups in their community. The nominated club will have worked with community partners to identify family caregivers, provide for (or funded) creative Pick Me Ups, based on the interests and needs of the family caregiver recipients, and raised awareness in the club and community regarding the needs of family caregivers. Outstanding Pilot Support of Anchor Club Award This award will recognize a club or member that has excelled in support of an Anchor club in all areas of youth leadership and development through service and financial support. Financial support includes fundraising to benefit the Anchor club’s operations or membership through scholarships, monetary donations and in-kind items.

~ Individual Awards ~ The awards for individuals are named after leaders who built the legacy of Pilot International and Anchor International. For each of these awards, one recipient will be recognized. We are pleased to offer the following individual awards. Lucy B. Allen Pilot Leadership Award This award, named after the first President of Pilot International, recognizes a Pilot who does an exemplary job of leading at the Club level. Elizabeth Leonard Pilot Club Builder Award This award, named after Ms. Leonard, who was instrumental In the establishment of Pilot International, beginning with the Pilot Club of Macon, Georgia, recognizes a Pilot who does an exemplary job of building clubs to enhance the presence of Pilot International. Pearl Sparks Pilot Service Award Named after the author of our Code of Ethics, this award recognizes a Pilot who does an exemplary job of living by the code while serving others. Ruby Newhall Anchor Service Award Named after the international president who initiated the Anchor Club Program, this award recognizes an Anchor who does an exemplary job of serving others.

The leadership of Pilot International spent a significant amount of time and research to establish the awards detailed on the previous page. We recognize that we have many clubs and/or members in our organization who have served with commitment and dedication in an effort to carry our message around the globe. We consider it our privilege to honor the outstanding efforts of so many with the presentation of these awards. Realizing that you may have some questions regarding the awards, we provide the following Q&A: 1.

Where do I find these awards and how do I submit the nomination? The Awards Nomination Forms can be found on the website at I’m A Pilot/Pilot International Awards (large button at the bottom right of the page, pictured previous page, bottom left). All forms include a description of the award, nomination information, required or suggested information, the postmark date and an address (email or mailing address) for mailing. 2. When is the deadline for submitting nominations? All deadline information is included on each individual Awards Nomination Forms. 3. Why would I want to submit a nomination for an individual or club for one or all of the awards? We hope that you will consider nominating an individual or a club so that we might applaud their successes, learn from them, and emulate their example. We believe the presentation of these awards will have a meaningful impact when we meet for our international conference in Chicago next July. You will also have the opportunity to learn much from these award winners during convention. We encourage you to review the Awards Nomination Forms on the Pilot International website and consider beginning the nomination process today. Anchor Welcomes Two New Clubs! Anchor Club of the Good Hope, Centurion (Pretoria), South Africa Sponsor: New Pilot Club of Pretoria, South Africa A Letter from Rick Jansen, President, Anchor Club of the Good Hope, Centurion, South Africa Dear Pilots and Anchors: Both Pilots and Anchors alike have awaited the Charter ceremony for what seemed to be much too long and the "de Goede Hoop Anchors" (Good Hope Anchors –the name of the Anchor Club hails back to one of the first 3 ships that were piloted to South Africa from the Netherlands by Jan Van Riebeeck in 1652) are officially chartered as of November 2013. We had even gotten our hands dirty with our first project - "Joy in a Box." We painted and decorated boxes filled with Christmas presents for underprivileged children, which was more of a struggle than you might think! My President Elect somehow managed to knock over a can full of paint on our front lawn! Luckily it was green so nobody was the wiser. Apart from that little incident (and various paint stained articles of clothing), our first event had been a shattering success!

THE ANCHOR

When we heard that Pilot Pat Garner was coming over, my parents started planning every detail of her stay only to find when she arrived that Pat was rather unpredictable. We anticipated that Pat was going to do what any other traveller does after an 18 hour flight - hit the sack - but we could not have been more wrong! Pat started pulling Pilot/Anchor banners, badges, bylaws, bookmarks, balloons and certificates out of her bags at about 6pm South Africa time and only stopped at 3 AM, when we all went to bed. Then we awoke to the sound of Pat making coffee! About an hour before the ceremony started we arrived at the venue where Pat made sure to fill our arms with our speeches and responsibilities for the night, and then she mentioned that I would have to Skype with the President of Pilot International! It was at that point when I became very grateful that Pat had the foresight to include a Project Lifesaver stress-star to her stock of imports...

Pictures from the Chartering Ceremony, Anchor Club of the Good Hope, Centurion, South Africa We spoke to Pilot International President Judy Langley and even had a few laughs with the Anchor Club of Roswell High School, GA courtesy of Cindy Weaver, Past PI President and member of Pilot Club of Atlanta, before we started with the Chartering, (Special thanks to Morgan, Matthew, Mary, Sam and the others who wrote in our little card!!) Pat had planned everything thoroughly, and so it went smoothly. After the patriotic reflection and inspirational messages, we chartered the Pilot Club - complete with pledges and certificates and thereafter the Anchor Club was similarly chartered by the new Pretoria Pilot Club President. After the officers and Presidents had signed the Charter document, we listened to our guest speaker and learned a great many things about the human brain. After the ceremony, we all felt a sense of belonging and purpose. It is great to finally be part of the Anchor family. Anchor Club News News from our Florida Anchors... The FL District Anchor Officers (right) attended the FL DIstrict Pilot Fall Council in November. Although they spent most of their time planning their 2014 FL Anchor District Convention, they still found time to enjoy with the FL Pilots. The Pilots and Anchors competed in a Lip Sync Contest with a '50s and '60s theme. The Anchors did "We Go Together" from Grease and won 2nd place!!

Bay County, FL Anchor Clubs The 2013-2014 officers for Anchor Clubs in Bay County, FL were recently installed. The installation took place at Girls, Inc., which the Pilot Club chartered in 1974. The National Anthem and “Welcome Anchors” was sung by by the Girls, Inc. Choir. Director of Girls, Inc., Tammy Dunaway, welcomed the Anchors and Bill Husfelt, Superintendent of Bay County Schools, and encouraged the Anchors to participate in community service throughout their lives. The Anchor sponsors were honored for their leadership in preparing Anchors for a life of community service. Following the ceremony Pilots, Anchors, parents, and friends enjoyed a hot dog dinner. Anchor Club of Hempfield High School Lancaster, PA Sponsor: Pilot Club of Lancaster, PA After learning about DoSomething.org while attending the Anchor Leadership Summit in New Orleans, Anchor Corrine Strubel (below left) organized a birthday card making party for children living in homeless shelters. The club designed, created, and delivered sixty-two birthday cards for a local homeless shelter.

Joining with Lancaster Pilot members, the club stuffed more than 3000 envelopes for Aaron's Acres Annual Fund Drive (below right). Aaron’s Acres provides camps, support, respite services, and more for children with Autism and their families.

Pilot International created and supports International Care & Kindness Week - the second week November - to encourage people to lift the spirits of strangers and friends through small acts of compassion. As an organization built upon Friendship & Service, Pilot International is committed to raising awareness of the power that friendship and simple kindness can wield in our world today.

(above) To celebrate the first International Care & Kindness Week, the Pilot Club of St. Lucie County participated in the community kickoff of "BE A SANTA TO A SENIOR" on Friday, Nov. 15th at Butterfield's Pharmacy and Medical Supply in Fort Pierce. This program collects, wraps and delivers gifts to needy seniors in St. Lucie County. It is very fitting that BE A SANTA kicks off during this week. The Pilot Club of St. Lucie County is proud to be a part of this wonderful program.

Although her husband is there during the evening hours, Mrs. Gail carries the primary responsibility. Lynn Wyatt and Katrina Lord donated their time to visit in the home with Mrs. Gail’s mother-in-law. Thank you Brandi Tipton for the gift certificate you obtained from The Fish Market for this couple. The club purchased a $50 Belk gift card for Mrs. Gail’s shopping pleasure. Thank you Mandy Bass for contacting the family and making all the arrangements for Mrs. Gail and her husband to have a wonderful evening together while her mother-in-law entertained Lynn and Katrina with her love of conversation.

WHAT IS SAFE KIDS DAY? Safe Kids Day is an annual fundraising, awareness, and event initiative to keep kids safe from preventable injuries, the #1 killer of kids in the United States. In April 2014, Safe Kids Worldwide and our partners will be working at the local and national levels to promote child injury prevention and motivate families in communities everywhere to join us in keeping kids safe. WHEN IS SAFE KIDS DAY? For 2014, the national Safe Kids Day is April 12. This day is important for focusing awareness and marketing efforts. However, please feel free to plan your events and awareness campaign for when works best for you, your community, and your local coalition. Anytime in the weeks surrounding April 12 will work well to coincide with the national campaign. Safe Kids Worldwide has prepared a full toolkit for Pilot Clubs to use in preparation for Safe Kids Day 2014 that can be found on the Pilot International Website. Joanna Horton is an Outstanding Pilot! Pilot Club of Winnsboro, TX Nomination and Article by Jenny Carter, Winnsboro, TX

Joanna Horton, Pilot Club of Winnsboro, and former Governor of the Texas District is an Outstanding Pilot! I first met Joanna when I attended Mountain High Camp for Adult Survivors of TBI. Joanna is the heart of the Texas District's Signature Project, the three annual Camps; Mountain High, Higher Ground and Circle of Friends. These camps provide a refuge and an outlet for happiness for Adult Survivors of Traumatic Brain Injury and are also a place of respite and reunion for family members of these Survivors. Joanna devotes much of her life to raising funding for and coordinating the activities required to put on these camps. In addition to her commitment to happiness for Survivors, she is also Partner and Owner of Whispering Pines Nursing Home here in Winnsboro. I had the privilege of spending time with her one day at her Nursing Home and watched Joanna as she walked through, checking on "her" residents, speaking to each one by name, bringing a smile to a face, or wiping a tear from an eye of these folks who are nearing the end of their lives. Joanna is also active in many civic organizations, like the planning and zoning committee. She is a member of Winnsboro's Chamber of Commerce, and is an active member of First United Methodist Church of Winnsboro. She is a loyal and compassionate friend and mentor to others. Pilot International and the Pilot Club of Winnsboro are lucky to call such an amazing woman - a devoted caregiver and true friend - our own. Congratulations, Joanna! YOU are an OUTSTANDING PILOT!

Alabama District PC of Cullman ▶ The Pilot Club of Cullman held its Annual Rummage Sale October 18 & 19. Sales amounted to over $5200. This amount will help the club's participation with their many projects such as the Project Lifesaver, Field of Miracles, BrainMindersTM, the Margaret Jean Jones Center, Pilot Light Home and the Alzheimer's Support Group.

Bahamas District Nassau Area Pilot Clubs ▶ Founders Day Celebration in Nassau was hosted by the Sunshine Pilot Club of Nassau at Breezes Superclubs on 15th October, 2013. The Central Pilot Club of Nassau and the Pilot Club of Nassau joined in for the festivity. The theme for the

What a special treat that was for the Anchors, and indeed for everyone. The Anchors participated in trivia games, sing-a-long, won prizes, and we all had lots fun.

The Pilot Club of Abaco Projects Coordinator Margo Dean and Anchor Coordinator Keora Archer gave back to the small community schools by offering school supplies to the children.

Sophie is retiring from the United States Embassy Services, after several decades of service and relocating to Cincinnati, Ohio at the end of the year. PC of Honolulu ▶ The Pilot Club of Honolulu has grown from 8 members last year to 20 this year. The process started after the President Elect attended convention. She had heard the comment, “You really don't understand the whole picture until you attend convention,” and she went prepared to attend as many workshops as she possibly could in order to learn more. For years, the club has held a fundraiser to pay all the expenses of the President Elect, and any leftover funds go to pay the registration fee of others attending. The first Pilot and Anchor Clubs in the nation of South Africa were chartered on November 7th in Pretoria, South Africa. Pat Garner, Pilot Club of Sweetwater, traveled to South Africa to witness the event, and Pilot International President Judy Langley took part in the historic festivities via Skype. The Chartering Ceremony was attended by 22 people including the guest Speaker and guests. Dr Hanlie Meyer, a Clinical Psychologist, was the guest speaker and she enlightened the guests, Pilots and Anchors as to the functioning of the brain and the cause of brain illnesses. Pat Garner read two letters by the Pilot International President Judy Langley, addressed to the new president of the Pretoria Pilot Club and the president of the new De Goede Hoop Anchor Club. Hennie Neumann, Secretary of the Pilot Club of Pretoria read the Pilot Code of Ethics. This was truly a memorable night for all present with a remark by one of the Anchor parents who said, "I never realized that this organization had such deep tradition and is this big." Welcome, new Pilot and Anchor friends in South Africa! We are all looking forward to serving alongside you!

Shannon Randolph of the SE Florida Pilot Club, a very talented artist who does beautiful face painting, transformed youngsters into fairy princesses and scary monsters. Tammy Wood created fun pumpkin and spider crafts and the kids bobbed for apples. Our own John Carroll High School Anchor Club performed a Halloween safety BrainMindersTM puppet show, written by Pilot Irene Wood. On Veterans Day, members went to the Abbie Jean Russell Care Facility with fresh baked muffins and helped serve food after attending their very stirring Veterans Day program. Club members also attended the annual Florida District Fall Council in Ocala Nov. 1-3, and participated in the featured service project for Give Kids the World Villas. Unfortunately, even after much practice, attendees fizzled in the Fall Council lip sync contest. Members also volunteered at Trinity Lutheran Church by helping with Families Meals, an organization that helps families in our community to have meals during the holidays, by assisting with their Thanksgiving

Port of Jacksonville Pilot Club was recently privileged to see the fruits of their efforts from this year’s Cemetery Tour fund raising. Starlight Project, an organization that renovates rooms for Autistic and/ or Down Syndrome Children, invited Port of Jacksonville members to the unveiling of Jake’s bedroom. The Big Reveal was held September 15 and made Jake one happy boy! PC of Naples ▶ Member of the Pilot Club of Naples gathered with new partner Sally Kreuscher, Safe Kids Child Advocacy Program Coordinator, for the 8th Annual PC of Naples 5K Run/Brain Power Walk and Kids Run. East Bay Band provided music throughout the afternoon and a fabulous meal was served, after which Pilots and students from the FSU Pilot Scholarship House joined in the Congo line, the limbo, and hula hoop contest. ▶ The

Names on luminaries “in honor of” or “in memory of” were read by Dr. Shane Collins and Tom Lewis of WPAP-92.5, and Savannah Stewart, president, Arnold High School Anchor Club, rang the Pilot bell after each name. On September 21, Melissa Lugo, Team Captain, was joined by members of the Riverview Pilot Club to walk in the 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer’s event held at Wickham Park in Melbourne, FL. Seven members of the South Brevard Pilot Club also joined the team to walk in the event. The Riverview “Do-ers” team surpassed its goal and raised over $2,300 capturing the second highest spot in team fundraising for this year’s event. Riverview Club members who met the fundraising challenge were: Judy Allender, Kelley Broome, Marcia Newell, Karen Pannell, Robin Porta, and Sherri VanBuskirk. Star team fundraiser and member, Judy Allender, walked in memory of family members who had the disease. She stated, “This was an important event to raise awareness for a disease that affects over 5 million Americans.” “We had

tremendous support from our members,” she continued. ▶ The Club also participated in the 23rd annual “Make a Difference Day” on Saturday, October 26. This event is the largest national community service event. Club members spent the morning weeding, planting and making landscape improvements to the Country Acres Home for Children in the Titusville Community. Overgrown flower beds were replaced with colorful Mums and golden mulch. Weeds were pulled and the ground was raked to make way for new grass. Harvest decorations of hay, cornstalks, and gourds were placed at the front entrance to the home. The inside foyer of the center was spruced up with pumpkin buckets filled with candy and fall decorations. Established in 1970, Country Acres Children’s Home, serves children who have suffered abuse, neglect and/or abandonment. Recently, Louie Herron Toyota in Milledgeville, Georgia, presented the club with a check in the amount of $500 for winning their “Love Bucket Friday” donation. been together for less than a year. His mother shared that Ethan likes speaking to groups about his dog, and chose to speak to the entire school about the dog being in his classroom. He gave a 20 minute program and Pilots encouraged to become puppy sponsors. Clay Center Pilot Club ▶ The Clay Center Pilot Club celebrated their 25th Anniversary on Monday evening, October 14, 2013. Sunflower, a non-profit agency, serves people with disabilities and delays in central Kansas. “Jean Cavanaugh is all about education and being helpful to others,“ Krom said. “Sunflower is gratified that she accepted our invitation. Jean defines the term ‘community support.’” Jean said she was stunned to receive the grand marshal honor but was happy to accept. “You don’t get many surprises at age 89,” she laughed, noting Sunflower Diversified is a great organization that benefits everyone. “Any time you help people with disabilities, you are not only helping individuals and families but everyone else too. CLUB NEWS SPECIAL EDITION Disorders at Wichita State University, has been awarded a $1,000 Marie Newton Sepia Memorial Scholarship from Pilot International. The scholarship is for graduate students who are preparing for a career helping children with brain-related disorders or brain-related disabilities. Prairie Pilot Club of Wichita sponsored Ms. Marble for the scholarship. Ms. Marble has worked in the area of early childhood education as a speechlanguage pathologist. Her research and clinical areas of interest include autism, early language and literacy intervention, and university teaching. PC of Great Bend, KS member Jean Cavanaugh

TV board and serves on the Senior Center and RSVP Advisory Councils. She is also a member of the Commission on Aging, Silver Cougar Club and Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose. In addition, she supports Great Bend Recreation programs, and funded the Jean Cavanaugh Wellness Center. Past affiliations include more than 30 years on the USD 428 school board; she also volunteered her time to the Golden Belt Community Concert, Clara Barton Hospital and FHSU Alumni Association. She is serving as the Chair of the Nacogdoches Heritage Festival for the twenty-ninth year. She is a member of First Christian Church and is a active deaconess. It’s hard to believe we placed 2013 in the history books and have already got 2014 underway. Now that the holidays are over, I am sure many Anchor Clubs are gearing up to get their projects and fundraisers started again. If you as a Pilot aren’t sure what their plans are, then you need to find out, and figure out how to be involved with them to kick start their new year of fun! One way you can get involved is with the upcoming District Anchor Conventions which are scheduled the end of February and into early March. Talk to your District Anchor Coordinator; see if they need any help before or during the convention, and if they do, then lend yourself to them, and lighten their load. Find out when your District Anchor Convention will be held, and make sure to submit your registration to join in on the fun this year. If you have never attended a District Anchor Convention, then this is your year to try something new and start a new tradition; I promise if you attend one, you won’t want to miss the next one! Another New Year’s Tradition you can make for yourself is to be more aware of the happenings in your Anchor Clubs and get involved. Anchors plan great projects loaded with fun, and I am sure they would love to see their sponsoring Pilots right there beside them spreading joy to those they are helping. Have you ever joined in on one of their fundraisers and helped to make it bigger and better for them? Well if not, there is something else you can add to your list this year! Anchors love giving to those in need and enjoy it even better with their Pilots beside them enjoying the times together.

Fundraising Ideas 1. Host an art show. Turning a space into a mini-museum of local talent is both fun and distinctive. Tip: It is best to have the art matted or framed beforehand. 2. Hold a Duck Race that is sure to entertain all. After each participant pays to receive a numbered rubber duck, the race down the stream begins! Whoever’s duck makes it to the ending point first is the lucky duck prize winner. 3. Host a Wine Tasting. Invite guests who will be happy to pay for the chance to taste a number of good wines, and then ask several local shops if they would be willing to donate a bottle or two for your cause. 4. Set up a concert, whether it be at a local venue or in your backyard. Whether you book local talent or family and friends, setting up a benefit concert, guitar night, or open mic night are great ways to let the good times (and donations) roll! 5. Organize a pancake breakfast for friends and families in your community. The guests, after paying a flat fee, are invited to enjoy a hearty breakfast of pancakes of every kind, complete with a smorgasbord of succulent toppings! Grocery stores will often donate product or a small gift certificate to shop at their store if you bring in a letter about your cause, so be sure to see if you can get the supplies for the breakfast donated.

As January winds down, I hope you will seek out your Anchor Club and/or your District Anchor Coordinator and find out what you can to do help your Anchors out this year!

6. A Rock-a-thon is a clever way to incorporate supporters of every age! Find a roomy porch or space, gather rocking chairs from your community, and have each participant pay to rock for a set period of time. This idea fosters companionship, conversation, and fun, and requires no physical stamina to complete!

7. Coordinate a Fashion Show. For an upscale vibe, some department stores are willing to provide the space, models and clothing for a show in exchange for advertising or a cut of merchandise sold.

10. Orchestrate a charity or benefit dinner. The most successful of these are usually held in upscale locations and include live entertainment or dancing as well as just dinner. Benefit dinners are ideal when seeking out potential large donors or corporate sponsors.

ruapilot2@msn.com As club members, we have to be continually on the lookout for prospective new members, even if your club is large, active and successful, our membership is constantly changing. New members bring fresh ideas and different perspectives, not to mention make our club’s ability to conduct effective service projects.

It isn’t always easy to attract new members, but it is always worth the extra effort. Some ideas that have proven successful in some of our most active clubs include - making the most of community service projects. Every time your club plans and executes a project, big or small, be prepared to promote Pilot to those in attendance. If your club makes a donation to a local organization, invite them to your club meeting to present the donation and ask them to stay for the meeting. Another idea is to look up old club membership rosters and circle the names of those who have left the club. Give those members a call. Their situations may have changed since they left, and they may be ready to return to your club. If for some reason they are unable to rejoin, ask them for the names of some people they think would make good members. Finally, make sure that each of your club members is educated as to the many new initiatives as well as the traditional focuses of Pilot. Your program director or Pilot Information Coordinator should plan and present at least one program a quarter about what’s new and what are the continuing focuses of Pilot International. The Pilot year is halfway over, and if your club has not begun working on chartering a new club or planning some great membership growth events, I encourage you to make this a priority. The beginning of the new year is a time that many people make resolutions. If you haven’t made a resolution yet, I have a suggestion…NETWORKING!

Networking will help you personally, professionally and in Pilot. If your club is looking for new members, community partnerships or new projects, networking is a great tool! A few weeks ago, the staff where I work sat around the conference table and shared what we do outside of work. We talked about the different kinds of volunteer work (ministry) we do outside of our jobs. As our conversation progressed, we realized that many people who do service don’t really talk about it. We don’t like to "toot our own horn." The truth is, if we don’t talk about it, we might be missing opportunities! I was chatting with a friend’s husband who works for a wonderful organization that serves people with brain injuries and illnesses, and he happened to mention that he’d really love to see a playground built on one of their campuses. If we don’t post about our projects on Facebook, or like other organizations’ Facebook pages to see what they are working on, we might be missing opportunities. A close friend that is very active with a national non-profit recently shared a link to a bike camp to teach children with disabilities to ride their bikes independently. She would love to host that camp locally. How does that sound for a fantastic and FUN Pilot project? Just imagine what you might be missing by not networking about your service work! If you are looking for project ideas, start with your own contacts! Networking to new contacts doesn’t have to be hard or expensive. There are many small business organizations that allow non-profits to attend meetings for free. If they host events, they will often allow non-profits to have booths at the events for free or reduced rates. You could even start your own networking group with other non-profits too! If you have Facebook, Twitter or a blog, make a commitment to devote at least one post per week to promoting Pilot. And don’t forget to follow other non-profit organizations’ social media so you know what they are doing too! We all want to do good things, let’s work together to get them done!

Anchor Clubs (Youth Development & Leadership) In 1952, Pilot began to recruit youth volunteers through the establishment of Anchor Clubs, a volunteer service organization for young people. Today, there are over 8000 Anchors worldwide with new clubs and members being added monthly. Through professionally developed curriculum and strategic partnerships with national organizations such as DoSomething.org and others, Pilot encourages and provides opportunities for Youth Development & Leadership around the globe.

Brain Safety & Fitness Since 1992, Pilot International has worked in the area of brain-related service. In 2013, Pilot narrowed its focus to Brain Safety & Fitness as the majority of our clubs were working in this area. Pilots participate in Pilot International’s BrainMindersTM family of brain-safety educational programs for elementary-aged children. Pilots are also proud partners of Safe Kids Worldwide and often participate in local safety fairs and bike rodeos to help educate children about injury prevention and brain-safe practices.

Caring for Families in Times of Need In 2013, Pilot International introduced the “Pick Me Ups” initiative for Family Caregivers that seeks to promote awareness of the unique needs of these special individuals. Through both fundraising and hands-on service work, local Pilot and Anchor Clubs provide a “little Pick Me Up” for deserving Caregivers in their communities. Working directly with local agencies to identify deserving Caregiver candidates, Pilot Clubs grant the specific “Pick Me Up” experience chosen by the recipient. Pilots support several camps for TBI survivors and their family members, and Pilot International was also instrumental in establishing the second week of November as International Care & Kindness Week. Pilots are proud supporters of Project Lifesaver and other organizations that seek to provide aid, and peace of mind to Family Caregivers of all kinds.
