Message from the Editor As summer fades into fall, we begin the holiday season. Holidays are special for all. However, I find I endeavor to approach every day with a holiday attitude. For today is the time we have right now. A few days after my husband was diagnosed with lung cancer, I heard the mantra, “Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery, Today is a gift from God, that is why it is called the Present.” Those words supported me throughout his illness and death as well as the loss of four other closest family members in a four year period. During those days I chose to smile often and stay positive. I still choose to live each day to its fullest! You will find many fun events listed in this edition of Focus that will make your days special. We are fortunate in Southern Middle Tennessee to have many businesses that project a positive attitude while providing the best in products and services. I have found the ones that are featured in Focus are professionals who strive for complete customer satisfaction. Your holiday season will be enhanced when you chose local for your services and gifts. Shopping locally means you are supporting your community in many ways. My wish for my readers is to not only have a happy holiday season, but to open ever “Present” and experience the joy it brings. Brenda

Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park The Old Stone Fort was built during the Middle Woodland Period, 1,500-2,000 years ago. Native Americans used this area continuously for about 500 years, eventually leaving it abandoned. By the time European settlers arrived, it was unclear of what the area had been used for which resulted in it being misnamed as a fort. In 1966, the state of Tennessee purchased 400 acres of the Chumley estate as the core of what is now Old Stone Fort State Archaeological Park.

The park is home to an abundance of activities for guests to enjoy. The main hiking trail follows the wall of Old Stone Fort which was used by the Native Americans as a ceremonial gathering place. The trail threads through dramatic scenery where you can see the original entrance of the fort which was designed to face the exact spot on the horizon where the sun rises during the summer solstice. Visitors can learn about the Old Stone Fort on this hike with twelve interpretive panels as well as enjoying the areas graceful waterfalls. The Old Stone Fort attracts history enthusiasts from all over. The park’s museum consists of displays of prehistoric Native American replicas as well as dioramas and photos. The exhibits provide information on the theories regarding the enclosure’s builders, archaeological excavations at the site and the culture of its builders. There is also a small theater for viewing an orientation film and other videos as well as group presentations. The museum also houses the welcome center, park office and gift shop. The History of the

Diamond Engagement Ring as an

A man presents his prospective bride with an engagement ring upon acceptance of his marriage proposal. Anthropologists believe this tradition originated from a Roman custom in which wives wore rings attached to small keys, indicating their husbands’ ownership. In 1477, Archduke Maximillian of Austria commissioned the very first diamond engagement ring on record for his betrothed, Mary of Burgundy. This sparked a trend for diamond rings among European aristocracy and nobility. The sentimental Victorians popularized ornate engagement ring designs that mixed diamonds with other gemstones, precious metals and enamels. Often these rings were crafted in the shapes of flowers and were dubbed “posey rings.” Diamond rings crafted during the Edwardian era continued the tradition of pairing diamonds with other jewels, commonly mounted in filigree settings. The opening of the DeBeers mines in Africa made diamonds more accessible. In the 1930s, when demand for diamond rings declined in the U.S. during hard economic times, the De Beers Company began an aggressive marketing campaign using photographs of glamorous movie stars swathed in diamonds. Within three years, the sales of diamonds had increased by 50 percent. In 1947, De Beers launched its now classic slogan, “A Diamond is Forever.” This campaign spurred even more sales. The implied durability of a diamond conveyed the meaning in the American psyche that marriage is forever. A diamond’s purity and sparkle have now become symbols of the depth of a man’s commitment to the woman he loves in practically all corners of the world. Diamonds still signify the celebration of a union and cherished memory, though more cuts make more styles an easy option for diamond lovers. 12 | Showcase Your Business in FOCUS - Call 931.409.9567 | july - december 2016

Lincoln and Donalson Care Centers Win National Bronze Award! On June 1, 538 long-term care facilities in 48 states were recognized with a 2016 Bronze Commitment to Quality Award by the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), including 20 Tennessee facilities – 17 nursing homes and three assisted living facilities. The award is the first of three distinctions possible through the AHCA/ NCAL National Quality Award Program. Lincoln and Donalson Care Centers in Fayetteville placed #6 among 17 Tennessee nursing homes achieving the Bronze Award. “I am so proud of our teams at Lincoln and Donalson Care Centers,” stated Cheryl Pendergrass, Nursing Home Administrator of Lincoln and Donalson Care Centers. “Every employee is committed to providing the best care possible for our patients and residents and make sure that they have a comfortable environment during their stay. I would like to congratulate all of the employees at the care centers for such an elite national achievement.” Implemented by AHCA/NCAL in 1996, the National Quality Award Program is centered on the core values and criteria of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, which is the foundation of the metric-based AHCA/NCAL Quality Initiative. The program assists providers of long-term care services in achieving their performance goals.

A Family Tradition of Quality Product and Outstanding Service

A

steady parade of people from many walks of life passed this writer as she sat rocking and waiting on the front porch-like setting at Yearwood Implement in Fayetteville, Tennessee. A farmer, an electrician, a homeowner were among those in search of parts or new equipment. Soon her wait was rewarded with the smiling face of P. D. Shelton, manager, as he said, “Come on in. Sorry for the wait but equipment doesn’t break down on a schedule.” The history of the family in business began in 1956 with Yearwood Motor Company. Then in 1991, they purchased Yearwood Implement. In 2005, they sold it but continue the tradition of quality products and great service as managers and operators. The product line reflects their standard of outstanding quality. Hustler, Bad Boy, Kubota, Husqvarna, Echo, New Holland, Outlaw and Bush Hog are trusted lines offered at Yearwood. Parts and service and repairs provide the assurance that equipment delivers optimum performance. Yearwood’s stock usually includes

the needed item, but special orders provide quick access to rare ones. “We are very youth orientated,” P.D. explains. They strongly support local FFA and 4-H Clubs. “We identify with the needs of farmers and cattlemen as we personally share their businesses,” P. D. declared. They are members of the Cattlemen’s Association. P. D. contributes their success to treating everyone as we want to be treated. “We are fair in dealing with customers and our goal is to always provide the best service,” he concluded. When it’s time to purchase home or farm equipment, put Yearwood Equipment Company at 1615 Wilson Parkway in Fayetteville, Tennessee at the top of the list.

A Modern Pharmacy

With A Tradition Of The Past In 1958, Loel Bennett opened a small pharmacy off the Square in Winchester, Tennessee. A fire necessitated a move and Bennett’s Pharmacy moved to the current location at 1201 Dinah Shore Boulevard. Now in third generation ownership, it is truly a family tradition of service. Following in her The Bloody Marty was created father’s footsteps, Mr. Bennett’s daughter, Betty by two young soda jerks at Don, graduated from the Bennett’s Pharmacy in University of Georgia College of Pharmacy. As a forward thinker, she was always one step ahead. She was the first pharmacy in Winchester to computerize their system. She loved to dabble in politics and ran for Mayor Of Decherd, where she served 3 1/2 terms, before she became ill. Continuing the tradition her daughter, Lisa Wallace, attended the University of Kentucky and came home to partner with her mother in 1992. Lisa’s experience included working for a pharmacy that served 21 nursing homes and a psychiatric hospital. She did consulting and worked with students from the University of Kentucky on geriatric rotations. The mother and daughter team decided to buy the building next door that had housed the Scenic Restaurant. “We knocked a hole in the wall and grew our business!” Lisa explained. “With our expansion we were able to offer new lines of merchandise in addition to health related items,” she stated. Vera Bradley, Girlie Girl t-shirts, Simply Southern gifts, Willow Tree and Leanin Tree cards and many other gift selections are available. With the expansion and modernization, one thing has remained the same, the old-fashioned soda fountain. One can climb aboard a classic soda fountain stool and order tuna fish, pimento cheese and chicken salad sandwiches. The chicken salad plate has become a popular choice. Add a milkshake, real ice cream, or a banana split and one has the delight of old-fashioned goodness. And of course it all would not be complete without the famous Bloody Marty. It can be made with Splenda for those watching their sugar intake. If Your Dream Doesn’t Scare You....

F

It is Not Big Enough

rom the trunk of her car to three retail locations, Stephanie Ogle is living proof of her mantra , “If your dream doesn’t scare you, it is not big enough.” “I’ve always had a love of fashion,” she declares. Her diverse background in the field includes modeling and jewelry sales at home parties and events. Her first retail store opened in Fayetteville, Tennessee in November of 2010 just in time for the Host of Christmas Past event. She began with fashion jewelry and soon added a line of boutique clothing that included misses to plus sizes. The success of the first location fueled her desire to grow. She had kept careful records when doing events in the Southern Middle Tennessee area and Winchester was a prime market. However, when she first considered downtown, she had a friend that was already there. Her support for fellow women in business is clear in her statement, “You don’t do that to another woman in business!” However as the inventory of the friend evolved in a new direction, Stephanie felt comfortable she was not infringing and opened on the Square in 2012.

In 2014 she realized the need for more space in the Fayetteville location and moved to 100 Main Ave. N. “We moved in a snowstorm and did in all in one day,” she laughingly explained. 2016 brings the opening of the third location of Pretty Discoveries. The Square in Lynchburg invites not only locals but thousands of visitors that tour Jack Daniels Distillery and explore the quaint southern town. Stephanie’s busy life style includes her husband, Chris Ogle and his two daughters and a son. Pretty Discoveries offers an array of fashion jewelry, purses and accessories. Boutique clothing in sizes S-3X provides the unique look sought by fashion forward area women. A fun shopping day can be spent in any of the three towns Pretty Discoveries calls home.

Chili Campfire Bake Not your typical meal, but I’ll tell you what – kids LOVE it! It is very quick and easy to make! You can also make this over the fire with a rack that sits on the fire and skillet. Either way you make it, it is fun and delicious! 1 (16 oz) box elbow macaroni pasta 1 (15 ounce) can chili 1 (7 ounce) bag corn chips ½ cup cheddar cheese, shredded Salt to taste

Pour the whole box of pasta into a large skillet (approximately 12 inches in diameter). Pour 3 cups of cold water into skillet. Make sure the water covers the pasta. Turn the burner to high, then set your timer for 10 minutes (optional: add a bit of salt to taste). Cook on high, stirring occasionally, until almost all of the liquid has evaporated. Add chili and bring to a simmer. Remove from heat and top with corn chips and Cheddar cheese. Serve immediately.

STRHS is here

long after your hospital stay

When a patient suffers from an accident, injury, or illness they are often treated at a hospital that provides short term acute care. Acute care is a branch of healthcare where a patient receives active but short term treatment for a severe injury or episode of illness, an urgent medical condition, or during recovery from surgery. The immediate objective is to stabilize the patient and begin the recovery process. For many of these patients, however, a quick recovery is unrealistic. Many patients require a longer period of time to recover from their injury or illnesses, or need intensive rehabilitation. They need continued care – Post Acute Care. Post-acute care refers to a range of medical services which support the individual’s continued recovery or management of a chronic illness. Because of their specialized care, postacute facilities lower healthcare costs by reducing lengths of stay within a hospital, transitioning patients home more quickly, and reducing unnecessary readmissions. Southern Tennessee Regional Health System offers several options for post-acute care including an Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF), a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF), and a Geriatric Psychiatric Facility. Each of these post-acute care settings offer unique, individualized care to their patients. The Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility at STRHS treats patients with functional difficulties which may be the result of stroke, orthopedic conditions (hip fractures, spine, or bilateral knee replacements), amputations, neurological disorders, major multiple traumas, spinal cord injury and brain injury. The 10 bed unit consists of an interdisciplinary team made up of a medical director, rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, a nutritionist, and a social worker. The Skilled Nursing Facility at STRHS provides less intensive, but necessary care to its patients most commonly following a period of hospitalization (within 30 days of

discharge). While SNF patients generally do not need the level of highly intensive care given in Long Term Acute Care Hospitals or IRFs, they still require ongoing skilled nursing and rehabilitative care under the supervision of a physician. STRHS offers Skilled Nursing at both its Winchester and Sewanee Campuses. Senior Advantage at STRHS is the region’s trusted program for all of your geriatric, psychiatric needs. The unit is complimented with a dedicated team of doctors, nurses, social workers, therapists and other disciplines that work to provide you or your loved one individualized care. The unit has been in operation for over 18 years and serves the middle TN region. Whether it is depression, confusion, or memory loss, we are here to offer the needed care. A referral to the program is an easy process and on most days can be handled the same day.
