A LOOK into EYE EXAMS

From eye irritation due to dryness, allergies, infections or injuries to needing glasses or contacts to achieve your best vision, seeing an eye doctor should be on your radar.

Often people only remember to get their eyes checked if their vision is blurry or changing; however, eye exams are important for many reasons that may not be so obvious.

With a dilated exam, optometrists may be able to detect problems that may not be symptomatic yet like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, as well as systemic health concerns such as diabetes, hypertension and certain types of cancer. Disease management and proper referral to specialists is key.

Referrals for refractive surgery or cataract removal start with a conversation with your optometrist during your eye exam.

Annual eye exams are important beginning at a young age. Health and vision problems can easily go undetected in very small children, who cannot communicate well, in addition to older children who are not likely to complain about something they may think is normal.

Early intervention is important for the development of good, equal vision in both eyes as well as the ability to use the eyes together comfortably and effectively.

HOW CRITICAL NUMBERS ARE MONITORED By drawing blood, your health care provider can conduct a blood lipid profile to check your blood cholesterol and glucose tests to check your blood sugar. Your blood pressure and weight are even easier to check with a blood pressure monitor and scales respectively.

Between doctor visits, you can monitor and track your blood sugar, blood pressure, and body weight.

Easy-to-use home glucose monitors, blood pressure monitors, and bathroom scales are readily available at retailers and pharmacies. By keeping track of your numbers on your own, you will be able to better manage your health.

A neurologist is a physician who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system which is comprised of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These doctors do not perform surgery, but refer patients to neurological surgeons when they determine that surgical intervention is necessary.

BIRTH Before leaving the hospital or birthing center, your baby receives the first of 3 doses of the vaccine that protects against Hepatitis B.
