Have You Ever Taken a Prescription Medication? Then you have benefited from the clinical trial process. Trials are the testing process that every prescription goes through to be approved by the FDA. Clinical trials are the human phase of testing, and the last test before a drug is marketed. The trials follow years of scientific and animal research. It typically takes 10-12 years for a drug to get to market. 7 out of 10 drugs are never approved for use Phase I: • First time humans takes • Young, healthy subjects takes the drug, usually in hospitals or universities facilities with 24 hour observation • Upon completion pharmaceutical company has to submit the results to the FDA for approval to move to Phase II • FDA will either pass or require more testing Phase II: • First time medication is given to subjects who have the condition the medication is intended to treat. • Pharmaceutical company and the FDA collecting data to determine effectiveness of the drug on the intended condition and data again submitted to FDA for approval to go to Phase III • Most drug fail Phase II simply because they aren’t as effective or any more effective than drugs currently on the market Phase III • Final trial before drug is approved (or not approved) to go to market • Typically larger and more inclusion of the intended patient population • Safety and efficacy date submitted again to FDA for final approval • Subjects are closely monitors in trials and may have lab work, ECG’s physical exams and a array of evaluations as well as education as indicated • A licensed medical doctor oversees every study • Study drug, is provided to subjects at no charge to them or their insurance. All studies pay subjects a stipend per visit for participation. Trinity Clinical Research LLC is a local site that offers people the opportunity to participate in clinical trials close to home, typical studies done in Tullahoma are Diabetes, COPD, Obesity, Migraines and other health issues prevalent in our area.

Like many areas of the body, your mouth is teeming with bacteria — most of them harmless. Normally the body's natural defenses and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, can keep these bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease. In addition, certain medications — such as decongestants, antihistamines, painkillers, diuretics and antidepressants — can reduce saliva flow. Saliva washes away food and neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth, helping to protect you from microbial invasion or overgrowth that might lead to disease. Studies also suggest that oral bacteria and the inflammation associated with periodontitis — a severe form of gum disease — might play a role in some diseases. In

addition, certain diseases, such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS, can lower the body's resistance to infection, making oral health problems more severe. To protect your oral health, practice good oral hygiene every day. For example: • Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. • Floss daily. • Eat a healthy diet and limit betweenmeal snacks. • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if bristles are frayed. • Schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings. • Avoid tobacco use. Also, contact your dentist as soon as an oral health problem arises. Taking care of your oral health is an investment in your overall health.

Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS) PCS is a complex medical condition and just one of the multiple causes of the chronic pelvic pain that can potentially lead to significant disability if not properly diagnosed and treated. A diagnosis of PCS is often missed because most physicians are unaware of the disease. If you pain worsens when you are sitting or standing and is relieved when you are laying down, or you experience pain with urination/ after sexual activity. You should consider being tested for PCS. Br Basaraba will test you for PCS to either confirm or rule it out. If pelvic veins are present, he will evaluate the ovarian vein to see if there is any reflux present. Reflux occurs when the ovarian vein disease, results in back flow (pooling) of blood. This pooling of blood within leads to varicose veins. There are three ways to diagnose PCS : • Ultrasound • Computerized Tomography Scan (CT Scan or MRI • Pelvic Venography Treatment options for PCS included medications, surgery, and minimally procedures. Medications have mixed results Surgery includes removal of uterus and ovaries with good result but leads to early menopause A nonsurgical, minimally invasive procedure known ovarian veins embolization can achieve similar results without significant side effects and without triggering early menopause. To embolize is to stop the flow of blood through a vein to a select region. This procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, with most patients going home after a few hours of observation and returning to normal activity in a few days Symptoms improve in over 80 percent of patients, resulting in significant improvement in quality of life.

KNOW YOUR HEALTH NUMBERS "Next time you visit your health care provider, be sure to ask for your critical health numbers to be screened and develop a plan, which may include diet, exercise and medication, to manage them," said Daniel W. Jones, M.D. and past president of the American Heart Association. HOW CRITICAL NUMBERS ARE MONITORED By drawing blood, your health care provider can conduct a blood lipid profile to check your blood cholesterol and glucose tests to check your blood sugar. Your blood pressure and weight are even easier to check with a blood pressure monitor and scales respectively. Between doctor visits, you can monitor and track your blood sugar, blood pressure, and body weight. Easy-to-use home glucose monitors, blood pressure monitors, and bathroom scales are readily available at retailers and pharmacies. By keeping track of your numbers on your own, you will be able to better manage your health.

ENT

Individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes are more likely to have high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, and, of course, high blood sugar. They are also likely to be overweight/obese. All of these factors increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and other serious health complications. If you have prediabetes or diabetes, it is crucial to carefully monitor blood cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight as a first step in controlling the disease and improving the quality of your health. Maybe you are not experiencing any symptoms. Why is monitoring these numbers still important? Keep in mind that there are no symptoms for people with prediabetes, and diabetes may be severe before there are any warning signs. Likewise, people have no way of knowing they have high cholesterol or high blood pressure without being tested.

RECOMMENDED RANGE

MORE INFORMATION

Blood sugar The amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood

Prediabetes HbA1c (glycosylated hemoglobin) less than 6% Diabetes HbA1c (glycosylated hemoglobin) less than 7%

Blood sugar is also measured by the amount of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in your blood. An HbA1c test gives you a picture of your average blood sugar control for the past 2 to 3 months and provides you with a better idea of how well your diabetes treatment plan is working.

Blood pressure The force of blood against the arteries when the heart beats and rests

Less than 130/80 mm Hg

Blood pressure is typically measured by an automatic cuff. Systolic pressure (top number) is the peak pressure in the arteries, and diastolic pressure (bottom number) is the lowest pressure.

Blood cholesterol A waxy substance produced by the liver

Get your cholesterol checked and talk to your doctor about your numbers and how they impact your overall risk.

Body weight

A body mass index (BMI) of 18.6-24.9 Waistline smaller than 35" for women and 40" for men

Because cholesterol is unable to dissolve in the blood, it has to be transported to and from the cells by carriers called lipoproteins. Low-density lipoprotein (or LDL) cholesterol, is known as "bad" cholesterol; high-density lipoprotein (or HDL) cholesterol, is known as "good" cholesterol. A person's ideal body weight varies by gender, age, height, and frame. Your body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference provide good indicators of whether you are at a healthy weight.

WHAT is a

NEUROLOGIST?

A neurologist is a physician who diagnoses and treats disorders of the nervous system which is comprised of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. These doctors do not perform surgery, but refer patients to neurological surgeons when they determine that surgical intervention is necessary. Some of the conditions that neurologists diagnose and treat are epilepsy, aneurysms, hydrocephalus, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke, spinal disc herniation, and spinal disease. In addition to using diagnostic tests like MRI, CT scans, EEG and EMG, neurologists also employ neurological testing to gauge muscle strength and movement, balance, reflexes, sensation, memory, speech, and other cognitive abilities.

BIRTH Before leaving the hospital or birthing center, your baby receives the first of 3 doses of the vaccine that protects against Hepatitis B. Hepatitis B virus can cause chronic swelling of the liver and possible lifelong complications. It’s important to protect infants and young children from hepatitis B because they are more likely than adults to develop incurable chronic (long term) infection that can result in liver damage and liver cancer. Starting at 1 TO 2 MONTHS of age: • Hepatitis B (2nd dose) • Diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough (pertussis) (DTaP) • Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) • Polio (IPV) • Pneumococcal (PCV) • Rotavirus (RV) 4 MONTHS • Diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough (pertussis) (DTaP) • Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) • Polio (IPV) • Pneumococcal (PCV) • Rotavirus (RV) • Hepatitis B (HepB) 6 MONTHS • Diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough (pertussis) (DTaP) • Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) • Polio (IPV) • Pneumococcal (PCV) • Rotavirus (RV) • Influenza (flu) 7-11 MONTHS There are usually no vaccinations scheduled between 7 and 11 months of age. However, if your baby has missed an earlier vaccination, now is a good time to "catch up." Babies 6 months and older should receive flu vaccination every flu season.

Every 19 minutes an older adult dies from a fall. Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for older Americans. One out of three persons over the age of 65 will fall this year. Twenty to thirty percent of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries such as lacerations, hip fractures, or head traumas, which can increase the risk of early death. 95% of hip fractures among older adults are caused by falls. These hip fractures often result in long term impairment and nursing home admissions. Many people develop a fear of falling. Even if they are not hurt when a fall occurs. This may cause them to limit activities, leading to reduced mobility and loss of physical fitness, and in turn increases their risk of falling. Physical Therapy can help reduce falls by improving equilibrium. Strengthen and balance exercises can increase confidence and physical fitness, and decrease fall risk. Older adults may also benefit from a review of their medications by their pharmacist or

doctor to identify those medications to identify those that can cause side effects or interactions such as dizziness or drowsiness. Yearly vision checks are also an integral part of ensuring functionality. Older person’s home needs to be made safe by reducing tripping hazards, adding grab bars inside and outside the tub or shower and next to the toilet , adding railings on both sides of stairways , and improving interior and exterior lighting, just doing these small things can greatly reduce chances of falling. FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Center therapist take a wholistic approach to consider whether issues with the spine, hip, knee, or feet contribute to imbalance, and they provide 2-on-1 care to help patients to achieve their highest independence possible. If a mobility devise is needed therapist will assist in matching you with the appropriate device and provide training for safety. FYZICAL will create a customized program specifically for each patient’s needs.

Ending The OPIOD Crisis At least 3 people die each day in Tennessee from an opioid-related drug overdose. Each year, more opioid prescriptions are written than there are people living in Tennessee, with more than 1 million prescriptions left over. TN Together is a multi-faceted plan, comprised of legislation, Governor Haslam’s 2018-19 budget and other executive actions attacking the state’s opioid epidemic. TN Together provides more than $30 million in state and federal funding to address opioid abuse. PREVENTION • Places reasonable limits on supply and dosage of prescription opioids. • Increases public awareness through outreach campaign and targeted education. • Promotes best practices in the medical community for pain management. TREATMENT • Ensures that all Tennesseans who need treatment have better access to

recovery services and resources. • Effectively targets areas for resources through data, improved access and sharing. • Expands treatment options and recovery programs, including those within the criminal justice system. • Creates incentives for offenders to complete intensive substance use treatment programs while incarcerated. LAW ENFORCEMENT • Increases funding to address unlawful sale and trafficking of opioids. • Provides every Tennessee state trooper with Narcan for emergency treatment of overdoses. • Updates the schedule of controlled substances to better track, monitor and penalize the use and unlawful distribution of opioids. OPTOMETRY ADDICTION

A LOOK into EYE EXAMS From eye irritation due to dryness, allergies, infections or injuries to needing glasses or contacts to achieve your best vision, seeing an eye doctor should be on your radar. Often people only remember to get their eyes checked if their vision is blurry or changing; however, eye exams are important for many reasons that may not be so obvious. With a dilated exam, optometrists may be able to detect problems that may not be symptomatic yet like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, as well as systemic health concerns such as diabetes, hypertension and certain types of cancer. Disease management and proper referral to specialists is key. Referrals for

BLUEBIRD RECOVERY 931.222.4075

refractive surgery or cataract removal start with a conversation with your optometrist during your eye exam. Annual eye exams are important beginning at a young age. Health and vision problems can easily go undetected in very small children, who cannot communicate well, in addition to older children who are not likely to complain about something they may think is normal. Early intervention is important for the development of good, equal vision in both eyes as well as the ability to use the eyes together comfortably and effectively. Make an appointment for yourself and your family to make sure you are reaching your full potential for excellent vision and eye health.
