Message from the Editor

During the holidays many of us think of those in need and make contributions. We want children to have toys from Santa, warm clothes and comfortable places to live. We make a visit to an elderly neighbor with a special gift. Maybe we saw a nursing home that has residents with who have few or no relatives. Now that the holidays have past and we may put these needs away. There are so many areas that would benefit from our help. For instance I know a pre-school director that says she hunts for bargains in shoes throughout the year. Her children will often come to class in ill fitting ones either they have outgrown or been handed down from an older sibling. A contribution to this shoe closet can mean much to a young child. Older people often need personal care products. Their dry skin appreciates a bottle of lotion. The best way to find these needs is to ask questions. Find out what can make a difference. If the nursing home can’t afford fresh fruit, watch for those bargains and take enough to give them each a piece, or maybe take whipped topping and let the chef prepare fruit salad. If their normal snack is peanut butter, take cookies (be sure to include sugar free) that become a welcome treat. There are many ordinations throughout our Middle Tennessee area that champion local causes. Find the one that fits and add your support. We are so blessed to have an abundance. We don’t necessarily need government programs, though they are often necessary to feed our children and house disabled, indigent and elderly, we just need to remember to “love your neighbor as your self.” Brenda

CARING FOR YOUR DENTURES Handle dentures with great care. To avoid accidentally dropping them, stand over a folded towel or a full sink of water when handling them. Brush and rinse dentures daily, but not with toothpaste. Toothpaste is abrasive and creates microscopic scratches where food and plaque can build up. Like natural teeth, dentures must be brushed daily to remove food and plaque. Brushing also helps prevent the development of permanent stains on the dentures. Use a brush with soft bristles that is specifically designed for cleaning dentures. Avoid using a hardbristled brush as it can damage or wear down dentures. Gently brush all surfaces of the denture and be careful not to damage the plastic or bend attachments. In between brushings, rinse dentures after every meal. Clean with a denture cleaner. Hand soap or mild dishwashing liquid can be used for cleaning dentures. Household cleansers and many toothpastes may be too abrasive for dentures and should not be used. Also,

FULL SERVICE...from

Inspiration to Installation

avoid using bleach, as this may whiten the pink portion of the denture. Ultrasonic cleaners can be used to care for dentures. These cleaners are small bathtub-like devices that contain a cleaning solution. The denture is immersed in the tub and then sound waves create a wave motion that dislodges the undesirable deposits. Use of an ultrasonic cleaner, however, does not replace a thorough daily brushing. Products with the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance are recommended since they have been evaluated for safety and effectiveness. Take proper care of dentures when not wearing them. Dentures need to be kept moist when not being worn so they do not dry out or lose their shape. When not worn, dentures should be placed in a denture cleanser soaking solution or in water. However, if the denture has metal attachments, the attachments could tarnish if placed in a soaking solution. Your dentist can recommend the best methods for caring for your particular denture. Dentures should never be placed in hot water, which can cause them to warp.

Christmas Year Round Hampton Creek is proud to announce a first for the area, a year-round Christmas store. “This year we not only showcased Christmas items in our store, we filled a new entire special room with unique decor,” explained owner, Tamela Hampton. That special room will now offer Christmas decor all year. Christmas can be a real challenge to budgets. Presents to buy, holiday foods to select, trips to visit friends and relatives,it often creates a budget strain. Often the choices of those beautiful decor items we really would like to add become limited. Hampton Creek’s year-round selections can allow one to choose that special vignette, add those delightful throw pillows, or purchase an outstanding stunner throughout the year. Then when Christmas arrives, your home will be festive and inviting, and it will a budget item that has been eliminated. Come on in, It’s always Christmas at Hampton Creek!

Scenic Wildflowers, Springs & Waterfalls Short Springs Class I Scenic-Recreational State Natural Area

S

hort Springs is a 420-acre natural area located in Coffee County approximately three and a half miles northeast of Tullahoma. The natural area provides an excellent contrast between Highland Rim and Central Basin geology and vegetation. When descending along the Machine Falls trail, a visitor can observe exposed black Chattanooga shale at mid-slope, which is a formation that delineates the Central Basin from the Highland Rim. Thickets of mountain laurel grow on the upper slopes under a dry oak-hickory forest canopy that is characteristic of Highland Rim vegetation. The lower slopes and riparian areas along Bobo Creek support towering sycamore, buckeye, magnolia, beech, and tulip poplar trees with a rich shrub layer and herbaceous cover. Short Springs is one of the very best spring wildflower locations in the state. In the spring, moist slopes are covered in trout lilies, Virginia bluebells, jack-in-thepulpit, larkspur, and Dutchman’s breeches. Large flowered trillium (Trillium grandiflora), southern red trillium (Trillium sulcatum), and barren strawberry (Waldsteinia fragarioides) are uncommon plants for Middle Tennessee that occur here. The natural area also supports two state-listed endangered plant species, Nestronia (Nestronia umbellula) and broad-leaved bunchflower (Melanthium Our Landscaping latifolium). Root Beer Baked Beans • • • • • • • • • • • • •

4 slices bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 large white onion, finely diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon minced peeled ginger 2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 12-ounce bottles root beer (about 3 cups) 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 2 teaspoons molasses 1 tablespoon grainy mustard Hefty pinch of red pepper flakes 1/4 teaspoon garam masala 4 15-ounce cans cannellini beans, drained and rinsed Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Set a medium oven-safe pot over medium heat and add the bacon. Cook, stirring, until most of the fat is rendered and the bacon is crisp, about 8 minutes; remove to paper towels with a slotted spoon to drain. Add the onion, garlic and ginger to the drippings in the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden, about 5 minutes. Add the tomato paste and cook until the color deepens, about 1 more minute. Add the root beer, vinegar, molasses, mustard, red pepper flakes and garam masala to the pot. Stir, then bring to a boil. Add the beans and three-quarters of the bacon and gently stir so the beans don’t lose their shape. Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer until slightly thickened, about 15 minutes; season with salt and pepper. Transfer to the oven and bake, uncovered, until thick, about 30 minutes. Let cool slightly, then top with the remaining bacon.

We’ve Created The Perfect Lifestyle At Southern Manor Living Centers, we understand that as

people age, everyday tasks such as maintaining a home and mowing the yard, cooking and cleaning up after meals, getting in and out of a bath and even buttoning a shirt or putting on jewelry can become difficult. Living alone can begin to feel isolating, stressful and perhaps frightening. Often, though, living with a sibling or adult child may not be preferable or even possible. That’s why we’ve created our special residential communities designed to give older adults the assistance they need and the companionship they desire without sacrificing their privacy or independence. Our lovely, single-level apartments are complemented with comfortably furnished common areas — both inside and outdoors — where residents gather to dine, socialize with neighbors and visit with friends and family. Three delicious meals a day, weekly housekeeping services and an activities calendar packed with fun and festivities, plus 24-hour access to caring, professional staff, round out our residential package that is second to none in the Middle Tennessee communities where we’re located. What makes Southern Manor Living Centers especially appealing is our commitment to nurturing each resident’s individual “total wellness” — physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. This whole-person focus comes by design — by our professional staff’s orientation and training in wellness, through the comfortable residential setting and by the welcome given to family support. All contribute to an environment that encourages and empowers our residents to maximize their independence and live life to the fullest. The unique wellness and care program designed by Southern Manor Living Centers provides a tailored “Wellness Plan” for each resident. Initially, family input helps establish the resident’s daily living needs. One month after moving in, the Wellness Plan is adjusted to reflect any changes in needs. Then the plan is updated at least four times a year, or more often if changes are observed by any of the resident’s assistants and caregivers.

Why Buy NEW When USED Will Do?

When a company has the buying power of 347 outlets, it can offer substantially lower prices to its customers! LKQ in Manchester is one of those 675 outlets located in the U.S. and throughout the world. Although LKQ is a wholesale company, it has a retail location at 3055 Hillsboro Hwy. Fortunately, for local do-it-yourselfers and mechanics the parts they need for their vehicles and customers are readily available at ultimate savings. Danny Campbell, General Manager, explains, “Our company buys an array of parts for all model and make vehicles from insurance auctions.” They are then distributed wholesale. In Manchester we have a local retail outlet that gives us the opportunity to pass along low prices to the buying public.”

Rob and Lynn man the store. They assist customers with new and after market replacement parts for autos and trucks. The answer to the question, “Why buy new, when used will do?” is clear to those that choose quality recycled parts. When those repair bills seem out of sight, just pick up the phone and call 931-461-8044 or 931-461-8387 . You will be pleased with their quote and be ready to be back on the road again.

IT FITS!

“I had been in health care for many years, but one day I decided I was somehow in the wrong area of my profession,” stated Tammy Holt, Lifestyle Coordinator at Autumn Oaks in Manchester, Tennessee. She took a little time off and it wasn’t long until Director, Tina Taylor, called her and suggested she come in for an interview. She was asked to join the staff immediately. This has lead to a very rewarding experience for Tammy. “Every day is different,” she says with a smile. It may bring the challenge of helping a new resident become accumulated to their new living arrangement. It may be encouraging someone to come out of their room and socialize, participate in a game, or join a group sing. “I get to know our residents personal preferences and encourage

You Can Go Home Again The old adage that you can’t go home again is sometimes proven wrong. And that is certainly the case for Alisa Lynn Henshaw of Winchester. In 1978 Teddy and Carolyn Steele bought the building at 307 South College Street in Winchester and opened Teddy’s Lawnmower Sales and Service. They built their business on the commitment of being a respected leader in the community for lawnmower sales, service and hand held power equipment. They provided the best value and excellent service to every valued customer. Their experienced and dedicated employees strove to make every visit n enjoyable experience. A couple of years ago they decided it was time to retire. The difficult part of this was finding a buyer that would carry on their tradition of excellence in service and choosing quality inventory that would be dependable and give long time satisfaction. “Life takes interesting twists and turns, “ explained Alisa. “At a time in my life that brought challenging changes, I connected with Keith Henshaw again. We had know each other and been friends. We soon found that we not only shared friendship but a love on which we could build a future.“ Alisa, the daughter of Carolyn and Teddy, had grown up behind the counter at the business. ‘ “I realized that they had built a profitable, viable, needed business. My previous experience in business gave me the

confidence that I could learn the product knowledge necessary for success,” she declared. Though this was totally a new concept for Keith, when she approached Keith with the idea of purchasing Teddy’s from her parents, he was ready to make that leap. She has found it is an learning curve to memorize all the features of the models they carry. That is understandable as the list of quality brand names is extensive. Kohler, Briggs and Stratton, Toro, Echo, Hustler and Grasshopper all have dependable product lines. “ We have been able to retain several knowledgeable employees and hire some that are very skilled in both our showroom and repair department,” Keith and Alisa declare. “I do feel that in so many ways have truly come home again!” Alisa concludes

Spring’s Anti-Aging Foods Everyone grows older, but there is a way you can add years to your life: Make smarter food choices. Helping you to do just that is the arrival of spring, which will usher in a crop of healthy foods we’ve come to associate with warmer months. Indeed, the following five fruits and vegetables are the best anti-aging edibles the season has to offer. They will not only make you feel better, but they may help you look better, as well. BEETS Sworn beet haters take notice. This ruby gem boasts so many healthy benefits, it absolutely has to find a way into your shopping cart, whether or not you like its earthy flavor. A fiber-rich food, beets contain an animo acid called betaine that can help lower your blood pressure, reduce your risk of inflammation, and help prevent and reduce the accumulation of fat in the liver. Win-win-win. When it comes to aging, beets contain powerful antioxidants that help keep skin supple and youthful and carotenoids that can ward off the macular degeneration that occurs as you grow older. ASPARAGUS Asparagus not only boosts heart health, thanks to its vitamin K (which prevents blood clots), but this succulent vegetable also contains a special antioxidant called glutathione that’s believed to help slow down the aging process. What’s more, the veggie’s other key vitamins, B9 and B12, may help ward off cognitive decline. If that weren’t enough, asparagus is also rich in lycopene, which has been found to protect the prostate and help lower the risk of prostate cancer. CARROTS Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which actually gets its name from the classic vegetable. The body converts this beta-carotene into vitamin A, which in carrots is called retinol, an ingredient found in many anti-aging creams. Along with being good for your skin and hair, vitamin A helps support your immune system, preserves good vision and

may help fight cancer. STRAWBERRIES This delicious fruit (especially in spring and early summer) is an excellent source of vitamin C, which is thought to help lower cancer risk. In addition, the alpha hydroxy acid in strawberries helps get rid of dead skin cells, making skin look more youthful. Strawberries also are high in fiber and help balance blood sugar, and the polyphenols they contain support immunity and healthy cell renewal.

RADISHES Radishes don’t generally spring to mind when one thinks about healthy superfoods in the same way as kale might. But this root vegetable has a lot to brag about. Acting as a major detoxifier, it contains a long list of healthy nutrients — everything from folate to copper to potassium to magnesium. Studies have shown that radishes fight cancer while getting rid of all those nasty toxins in the liver. If that weren’t enough, they have vitamins A, C and K, which boost cell production and repair.
