Prelude to Summer VIRTUAL AUCTION
TO BENEFIT THE CAPE COD ARTS RELIEF FUND
Welcome Letter ONE YEAR AGO AT THIS TIME, THEATER STAGES WERE EMPTY. CONCERT HALLS WERE SILENT. AND MUSEUMS WERE CLOSED. Virtual became the buzzword for how we consumed art and connected with others. At the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC), we adapted to this new way of life. We held our first-ever virtual three-day concert, Home Is Where the Art Is, last spring. Our annual auction shifted to the virtual space. And our Pops by the Sea — even that went virtual. I’m grateful that technology continues to give us the ability to fulfill our mission, through events like this virtual auction, where Cape Cod art can be celebrated and experienced from both near and far. Last fall, during an interview with Provincetown-based musician and actor Anne Stott for our Creative Exchange podcast, I asked how she found stability during the pandemic. “I look back at my past successes. I relive what it took me to get to those places,” she responded. “Reflecting makes me feel grounded in my current decisions.” The past year wasn’t easy for the AFCC staff or our Board. But we quickly found our grounding by reflecting on our values and our mission to support, promote, and celebrate the arts and culture of Cape Cod. The road ahead is not an easy one, but this community event gives me a renewed sense of optimism. This is another step closer to recovery, and the best part is we’re doing it together. Thank you for your generosity and support over the past year and moving forward as we continue to strengthen our mission and ensure the region’s arts sector receives the support it needs and deserves in order to make a full recovery. With gratitude,
Julie Wake

THE BEST WINES START WITH A GREAT STORY. OR PERHAPS, THE BEST STORIES START WITH A GREAT WINE.
that was gritty and blue collar, and 20 minutes away was this other world,” he says. “That was my first real exposure to the arts.”
With this year’s Prelude to Summer Honorary Chair, Joseph Carr, it’s most likely a combination of both. The famed vintner and creator of Josh Cellars, the nation’s best-selling brand in its price category — over 4 million cases of the wine are sold on an annual basis — is an artist at heart.
The arts have remained integral to Carr’s life. As a student at SUNYGeneseo, he became a fine arts major with an interest in modern dance. He spent time working in dance and drama, including a stint at The Egg, a performing arts venue in Albany.
It’s why his rags-to-riches tale — he grew up in a working-class family in upstate New York — serves as an inspiration to so many. Like all creatives, Carr has taken immense risks in life and has failed. Repeatedly. “You are going to face adversity and failure in life,” Carr says. “It’s how you face it and what you do after you fail that will define you.”
JOSEPH CARR
Vintner/Founder Josh Cellars Sonoma
Four years after he stepped down as president of the international wine company Mildara Bass — he resigned the day after 9/11 — Carr was hawking the 2002 vintage of Joseph Carr cabernet sauvignon out of the back of his truck. That first year, he sold all of 1,200 cases. To some, it may have looked like failure. But Carr was embracing his passion. And isn’t that what all great artists do? It was at an early age that Carr developed an affinity for the arts. He credits his mother, who would take him and his twin sister to the theater and The Clark Museum in nearby Williamstown, Massachusetts. “I grew up in a place

Even as he forged a wildly successful career in the wine industry, Carr has held firm to the creative. In 2010, he founded Dylan’s Ghost Winery as a nod to Dylan Thomas; Carr can recite the Welsh poet’s renowned poem “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night” with an emotion that will stir your soul.
There’s a reason why Carr is a soughtafter speaker, sharing his inspirational tales of success (and failure, followed by more success) at Harvard Business School, the Culinary Institute of America, and the Nashville Food and Wine Festival, to name just a few. His story speaks to the artist in all of us. We want to celebrate not only what Joseph Carr has accomplished, but what he has done with what he has accomplished — strengthening our community by giving back to organizations like the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod. Any great winemaker knows that wine is best when shared with others. And Carr has done exactly that with the gifts he has been given. We are beyond grateful to be a recipient of those gifts, which is why we proudly raise a glass to Joseph Carr and his steadfast support of the arts.

Beyond that, Laster says, the AFCC has served to connect the festival with other cultural nonprofits throughout the region, which desperately need funding, especially after the events of the past year. “It really has been a guiding force in creating a community of like-minded people who run different organizations to coalesce around the notion of the importance of arts and culture,” Laster says. “The Arts Foundation really has been at the center of that for many years. They are a convener for many of us to raise the profile of arts and culture to make people understand that it is not just an extra or an add-on, but an essential part of making Cape Cod what it is.”
finishing up her second feature and Judy had shot a spaghetti western short “in Woods Hole that I forced all my friends to be in,” she laughs.
The pair needed a vehicle to showcase their work so they launched the festival in 1991 with an hour-long program. Thirty years later, that hour has morphed into an eight-day festival complete with over 200 films, panel discussions, workshops, and filmmakers-in-residence. “We always had a mission to bring the best in independent film to Cape Cod,” says Laster, the festival’s executive director. “We really wanted to provide that place for emerging filmmakers to be supported, especially as the world of independent film grew. Filmmakers have come to know Woods Hole as one of the places where they could come to learn and connect with other filmmakers and create bonds to help them in their careers.” Over the years, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod (AFCC) has provided funding to the festival so it could expand beyond the eight days it adds to the cultural vibrancy of Woods Hole. That has included financial support of the festival’s popular Dinner & Movie and Film Falmouth series, giving the public an opportunity to view independent fare in the fall, winter, and spring. “The Arts Foundation provided support to us in the form of grants that allowed that kind of expansion,” Laster says.
After a year of offering virtual programming, the festival will return this summer with a hybrid format — some films will be screened virtually while others will be in person. The real celebration of the festival’s 30th anniversary will be postponed until 2022. The pandemic didn’t make things easy, even for an organization like the festival, which has a storied history on the Cape. Having an organization like the AFCC, Laster says, was critical “to being an important voice of the effect of the pandemic on arts and culture, which has been devastating to us.” The pandemic, Laster says, has served as a reminder that “arts funding on the Cape is substantially behind where it could be and where it should be. If we want the quality of life on Cape Cod to incorporate arts and culture — we know it is a significant reason people live here — then support for grant-funding organizations like the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod is critical.” Visit: WoodsHoleFilmFestival.org

“THIS PANDEMIC HAS BEEN UNLIKE ANYTHING I’VE EVER EXPERIENCED IN MY CAREER,” SAYS PROVINCETOWN THEATER ARTISTIC DIRECTOR DAVID DRAKE. While the challenges posed to cultural leaders like Drake have been unprecedented, they have not been insurmountable, especially when the work his organization is doing is so critical to the community. “Audiences look to us to nurture their souls,” he says. “That is my job: to nourish the souls in our community with live theater.” Since last March, Drake has had to do that by improvising. There is no script for dealing with a pandemic. The past year, the theater shifted from in-person performances to virtual ones, including a 40-minute original play “Ghost Light” that was written and directed by Drake and which premiered two days before Halloween. There have been story slams, musical performances, and a holiday extravaganza, all performed online. While these virtual offerings have been necessary for the theater to maintain a connection to its patrons, Drake acknowledges they lack the intimacy and collective experience of a live performance. And that is where the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod played an invaluable role last fall when it awarded
16
the Provincetown Theater a $5,000 grant to help it bring back in-person shows this summer. “It is going to be enormously helpful,” Drake says. “This grant money will be used to create an outdoor space with the goal of giving the public live performances in a safe environment.” This spring, the Provincetown Theater received permission from the town to construct a fenced-in outdoor playhouse in its parking lot where it can stage three shows for up to 50 patrons per night. Its first play, Neptune, will premiere in the middle of June, representing a 16-month span from when the theater last welcomed patrons. “Theater is a gatherer. It brings everyone together,” Drake says. “It is an individual, but collective experience. It’s like when you go to see a movie or a show and you’re laughing at something and you look at the person next to you and they are laughing too. People miss that collective experience so much.” Theater is what Drake refers to as “community building and strengthening.” For over a year, it has been sorely missing in Provincetown. Soon it will return, with the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod serving as a critical link to making that happen. Visit: provincetowntheater.org

Carl Lopes 2021 POPS BY THE SEA COMMEMORATIVE ARTIST JOY – IT’S SOMETHING WE COULD ALL USE A LOT MORE OF THESE DAYS AFTER THE EVENTS OF THE PAST YEAR. That’s exactly what Carl Lopes’s art has given to so many during his 50-year career as a painter. And that is what he has brought as this year’s Pops by the Sea Commemorative Artist. “This is the perfect year for Carl’s art because it is joyful, bright, vibrant, and threaded with positive energy,” says AFCC Executive Director Julie Wake. In April at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, all of the characteristics that embody the best qualities of Lopes’s work were on full display when he unveiled his latest piece, “Harmony,” which will be auctioned at the AFCC’s June 17th gala, Prelude to Summer. After Lopes dedicated more than 120 hours of sweat, toil, passion, and creativity, he emerged from his Marstons Mills studio with a completed piece in his signature style — colorful, shiny, and bright. And then, when it was finished, he gave it a name. “Harmony” has multiple meanings. It refers to the Cape “which as a natural setting is very harmonious with beautiful vistas and the sky and water,” Lopes explains. “It is very soothing, in a very meditative way.”
The name also represents the meditative nature of art which Lopes says “can be very soothing and heartwarming. … One of the things I was trying to do with this is bring together the meditative spirit of music with the meditative spirit of the natural elements of Cape Cod.” Lopes, who spent 35 years as a visual arts instructor at Barnstable High School — the last 24 serving as the head of the school’s art and applied technology department — juggled his teaching career with his work as an artist, all while raising his two children, Jared and Andrea, with his wife Kathy. It was during this time that Lopes developed his abstract, geometric style which is heavily influenced by African design and tradition. The vibrant colors, patterns, and compositions are rooted in his ethnicity as a third-generation Cape VerdeanAmerican. “A large part of my art is making a statement regarding who I am,” he says. Woven through his work is the joy he experiences during the creative process. It’s a feeling he enthusiastically imparts to all who purchase his art. “I hope whoever purchases this gets a lot of joy from it over the years,” he says. “In many ways, I hope this piece resonates the importance of art and brings hope and brightness into someone’s life. I think the arts do that to many of us, which is why they are so important.” Visit: CarlLopes.com

LORI MEHTA Beach Gaze • Oil on cradled board, 12" x 16"
Oil on canvas, 20" x 20" x 1 ½"
Lori Mehta paintings capture moments seen out of the corner of one’s eye. By obscuring the identity of the subject, she looks to the viewer to create their own narrative, often recognizable to them in a simple gesture. Her style is best described as a mesh between contemporary realism and cubism. Lori exhibits in galleries across the United States and has been the recipient of over 40 awards both nationally and locally.
Through the rich medium of oils, Carrie’s exploration of light and color is an attempt to capture the unique sense of place, time, and emotion evoked by each landscape she paints. With palette knives and chip brushes, she builds a painting in layers, working color and composition to distill the essence of a place. From the mountains to the sea, the diverse environments of New England inspire the work that she does, both plein air and in the studio.

I’m ostensibly an abstract painter influenced as much by nature as I am by popular culture. Mixed media sculpture, hand-dyed cotton, silk, monofilament, violin strings, 27" x 16" x 16" I choose to work with fiber for its versatility. I work intuitively, letting color and texture guide the process. Layering many different materials and techniques creates depth and dimension in my final pieces. The majority of my work is abstract in nature, but I have a goal of creating a feeling of movement. As I continue my education and deepen my experience in the field of fiber art, I am intrigued by the sculptural potential of fiber. I look forward to exploring this potential and developing new techniques suited to the medium. Specifically, I have been working on a series of large scale fiber sculptures as a means to learn how to create a fiber structure that is strong enough to support itself but still retains the soft pliable qualities of fabric. MICHELE POIRIER MOZZONE Onward — Signed Fine Art Print
Lorraine is a painter who draws her inspiration from the natural surroundings where she lives on the outer Cape. She states, “I am captivated by the fleeting effects of the atmosphere upon nature, which reveal a fragile instant of equilibrium or tension between the land, sea,and sky. I am inspired by the ephemeral effects perceived in nature, a storm thundering across a marsh, the sea as it surges. My paintings strive to evoke an emotional response to natural phenomena.”
Simply put, I paint because it makes me happy. I paint because of those days when I am in a zone where time, worries, and the outside world melt away. I paint for those paintings that I step away from with excitement and joy; those paintings that seem to paint themselves. They are elusive but they keep me coming back for more. My art has been guided by exploration since my first watercolor class twenty-five years ago, setting me on a journey through various media, styles, and painting techniques. The world around me and a lifetime of perceptions play out in their own way and allow me the freedom to go wherever the paint takes me. The fun and challenge of every painting is solving the puzzle that emerges on the picture plane. I seek harmony and balance using form, shape, and color.

LOIS CASTELLANA Chatham Fog • Pastel on board, 27" x 39" (framed) I am a self-taught artist working in pastels. I draw my inspiration from the beautiful seascapes of Cape Cod. I continuously explore and photograph the ins and outs of Chatham and the surrounding areas. This tranquil picturesque place is my inspiration, along with the sounds of classical or jazz music, which is a constant in my studio. I am drawn to the calming effect of a boat's reflection in still water or the soothing rhythmic movements of the sea. Art allows me to express a semblance of peace which nature presents to us every day in the powerful stillness of a moment. DIANNA BRAGINTON-SMITH Sesuit • Oil on canvas, 20" x 24" I was blessed to grow up in a family of artists and crazy creatives who were lovers of nature, animals, and history here in the natural beauty of Cape Cod, and that has remained my constant inspiration. My mother painted with Romanos Rizk back in the early ‘50s, and both she and my sister Heather were amazing artists. Neither went to art school. I have drawn or painted what was in front of me since I was old enough to hold a pencil or brush. I attended the Boston Museum School, but to me the mark of an artist isn’t in what they tell you about themselves or where they went to school, it’s in their eye and their intuitive heart — that is what defines them, and that is born, it is not taught. CARL LOPES Harmony
Acrylics, beads, and holographic papers on birch panels (coated with high gloss poly resin) 33" W x 24" H x 3" D Joy — it’s something we could all use a lot more of these days after the events of the past year.

The name also represents the meditative nature of art, which Lopes says “can be very soothing and heartwarming. It was during this time that Lopes developed his abstract, geometric style, which is heavily influenced by African design and tradition. The vibrant colors, patterns, and compositions are rooted in his ethnicity as a third-generation Cape Verdean-American. I think the arts do that to many of us, which is why they are so important.” Visit: CarlLopes.com Gallery: Creative Hands Gallery Instagram: CarlLopesArt

CAPE COD ARTS RELIEF FUND
Supporting Local Arts AT T H I S C R I T I C A L T I M E
LAST SPRING, WHEN WE LAUNCHED THE CAPE COD ARTS RELIEF FUND IN RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC, OUR GOAL WAS SIMPLE — RAISE MONEY TO ADDRESS THE IMMEDIATE NEEDS OF OUR CREATIVE ECONOMY. Our initial focus was on the artists who had suddenly lost gigs, work, and income. With your support, we were able to provide nearly $30,000 in emergency financial assistance to over 75 individual artists across the Cape. But the need was far greater; we received more than 200 requests. In the fall, we shifted our attention to the cultural nonprofits that had been devastated by the events of the past year; many had reported hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue. Again, your support enabled us to provide $51,000 in grants to 16 cultural organizations in our region. And once again, the need was far greater, as we received a total of 52 applications seeking over $218,000 in funding.

You helped us fix the car, the one that kept dying. You also made us feel really supported during this lonely and very scary time.
Please support the Cape Cod Arts Relief Fund Now and in the future, the health of our community relies on the well-being of the arts.
When local artists felt alone, when they felt scared, and when they didn’t have money for groceries, you offered them comfort, you eased their fears, and you provided them the financial support they needed so they could put food on their table.
The pandemic has had a devastating impact on local artists and our cherished cultural organizations. Please help us raise muchneeded funds that help our creative community build a path to sustainability and recovery. Your gift supports the Cape Cod Arts Relief Fund and the work of the AFCC to build and strengthen art and culture in our region at this critical time.
